This episode is a little different from my usual career content. It is a raw, unfiltered reflection on my experience healing from diet culture. I talk about my running journey and how I went from using running as a way to lose weight, to using running as a way to celebrate myself and my body. I mention two people who have been absolutely pivotal in this journey, Food and Holistic Health Coach Naihomy Jerez, and Certified Personal Trainer Samantha Lee. I also talk about the systems of oppression that impact food systems, how we nourish ourselves, and the disordered behaviors that are marketed as “healthy.” CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains references to disordered eating behaviors. Welcome to Blonde Intelligence, I am your host Ms. Roni and I always seek to give you exquisite cranial repertoire. Hungry families. Shuttered paychecks. Loud opinions. Quiet facts. We take on the empathy gap around public benefits and ask a harder question: what does fairness look like when the pantry is empty and the rent is due? We start by reframing “welfare” to include the benefits many of us already use—tax breaks, SBA loans, VA support, FHA mortgages—so the conversation stops being “us versus them” and becomes “how do we keep households stable?”From there, we unpack SNAP reality on the ground: time limits, work and training rules, recertifications, and the frustrating tradeoffs people make just to qualify. Yes, fraud exists, but policy and administration already chase it; it shouldn't erase the majority who play by the rules. We spotlight the human side of shutdowns and economic shocks—air traffic pros gigging to cover tuition, small business owners taking risky loans, parents staring at a pantry shelf. Freedom from want isn't a luxury; it's a baseline that lets kids learn and adults work.We also turn to the workplace, where empathy shows up as safety, fair schedules, and leadership that values people over output theater. And we make a case for practical resilience: skills and trade credentials that pay, protect, and keep communities running. Education is broader than college; it's any path that delivers real work and dignity. If you're tired of hot takes and want a clearer lens on benefits, voting choices, and everyday ethics, this conversation invites you to test every policy against a simple filter: how would this land on me? Subscribe, share with a friend who cares about solutions, and leave a review with one change you'd make to build a more empathetic city. Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On the episode IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes guest and Purple Patch Athlete Marina Gelman. In 2000, at the age of 40, Marina Gelman lost her college-aged daughter in a tragic car accident. At the time, Gelman was a new fitness enthusiast and avid runner. Overcome by grief after the accident, however, she holed herself up for almost two years and focused only on work to numb the pain. Unfortunately, during this time, she abandoned her fitness goals, started smoking again after a long hiatus, and put on weight; reaching over 200 pounds. Ironically, it was another tragedy a short time later, the death of her Father from a heart attack, that inspired her to start training again. As it turns out, training non-stop turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, she lost weight and found relief from her stress and heartache, but she was also overtraining…severely. Marina eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of chronic fatigue. Even the simple act of walking up a flight of stairs became unbearable. In 2012, after hearing about Matt Dixon and Purple Patch from her running club, she reached out. At the time, she was 240 pounds, her heaviest. She explained to Matt that she had only two small goals: Recover from her chronic fatigue Run three miles again. That's it. Matt set her sights higher. Not only did he give her hope, but he also gave her a long-term structured plan and a wonderful community of support. Today, Marina Gelman is a Half-Ironman finisher, with her hopes set on finishing a full Ironman in the near future. She has also lost 105 pounds and trains daily, fully recovered from chronic fatigue. This is a story of hope and promise. Adopting an athletic mindset, regardless of where you find yourself, just may be the one spark to save your life. “Losing a child is something unimaginable to go through,” says Marina. “Sport, in a way, and running saved me from sadness for the rest of my life.” If you have any questions about the Purple Patch program, feel free to reach out at info@purplepatchfitness.com Purple Patch and Episode Resources Check out our world-class coaching and training options: Book a complementary needs assessment coaching call: https://calendly.com/coaches-purplepatch/offseason-assessment-call Tri Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/squad 1:1 Coaching: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/11-coached Run Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness/com/run-squad Strength Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/strength-1 Live & On-Demand Bike Sessions: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/bike Explore our training options in detail: https://bit.ly/3XBo1Pi Live in San Francisco? Send us a textWhat happens when the generation meant to build the future feels like they don't have one?In this raw and deeply personal solo episode, host Lira Ndifon steps out from behind the interview mic to share her own harrowing battle with depression—a journey that stripped her of her identity but ultimately led her to her purpose. But her story is just the beginning. Lira confronts a crisis hiding in plain sight: the staggering rates of mental health struggles among children and teens. Armed with alarming statistics, she reveals that 73 to 74 million children in the US are grappling with mental health issues, yet a devastating 79% receive no support. This isn't just about numbers; it's about the silent suffering behind closed doors, the stigma that keeps young people—especially young men—from speaking up, and the societal pressures contributing to suicide becoming the second leading cause of death for ages 10-34. Lira challenges the silence, arguing that open conversation is not the risk—it's the antidote. She connects the dots between untreated mental health, community violence, and the specific hurdles faced in African and African American communities. This is a must-listen for parents, educators, and anyone who cares about the next generation. You will discover:Lira's Untold Story: How losing her identity led her to the depths of depression and the self-reflection practices that brought her back. The Shocking Statistics: A clear breakdown of the youth mental health crisis and why it demands our immediate attention.Beyond the Stigma: Understanding the unique challenges and cultural barriers preventing young people, especially boys, from seeking help.Your Mental Wellness Toolkit: Four simple, powerful tools—journaling, meditation, exercise, and community—that Lira personally used to heal and that you can implement today. This episode is a powerful blend of vulnerability and data, a heartfelt plea for awareness, and a practical guide to finding hope in the darkness.
