Joel Bardall and Todd Von Joel talk about their approach to decorating our own home and how far they go in achieving a professional finish when it's their own free time, money and the family will mess it up anyway. Andy Hamilton from AR Decor joins the chat and talks about his experiences.
Andy Hamilton, Jon Holmes and Colin Shindler ask the question “Has the match day experience improved over the years they have been going to watch football?” You would think the answer would be that of course it has. We all have a seat, the food, whatever the price, couldn't be worse than it was in the 1960s and ‘70s, we are never caught in those frightening swayings on the terraces and the clubs appear to want to turn football into some weird version of show business. But… why don't we see those marching bands on the pitch any more and what happened to Arthur Cager, the man in a white coat on a stand conducting the crowd in Abide With Me and She's A Lassie From Lancashire before the start of the Cup Final. Is this new awkward marriage between show biz and football something the crowds really welcome? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Colin Shindler asks Jon Holmes and Andy Hamilton to relive their football related nightmares. They are forced under forensic questioning to remember what they had hoped they had buried forever in the deepest recesses of their memories. In other words, those defeats which evoke the very darkest of thoughts. They don't have to be 9-0 thrashings to do that. They can be games when you're 1-0 up and coasting and then two stupid, stupid, stupid goals in stoppage time turn victory into defeat. There can be narrow defeats in important games or games decided by the insanity and incipient blindness of the match officials. Either way you leave the ground wondering why you bothered getting out of bed and coming in the first place. The Football Ruined My Life audience knows exactly what that feels like. Following on from the last episode (the special on FIFA and their Peace Prize that was awarded to Donald Trump), this week Jon Holmes, Andy Hamilton and Colin Shindler ask themselves the question: “Is the game more or less exciting than it was when we first started watching football in the late 1950s/early 1960s?” It certainly seems to be more exciting to judge by the hysterical radio and television commentators and the ludicrous goal celebrations we have to suffer. Back in the day a goalscorer might have his hand shaken, his hair ruffled and on occasion his bottom fondled, albeit very briefly. Of course, what appears hysterical to fans of mature years might not appear so to someone fifty years younger. The game has grown, Premier League grounds are full, players are faster and more skilful. Surely that means that the game is more exciting. Listen and find out… Learn more about your ad choices. The panel discuss the players they most feared because they were really good players and always played well against their own team... or players who were basically hatchet men who set out cold-bloodedly to injure their best player. When we talked about goalkeepers Pat Jennings came into the former category and you have to say nobody could dislike Pat who always seemed such a pleasant self-effacing bloke – unless you were trying to score past him. Don Revie's Leeds United on the other hand were both feared and disliked. Various teams of course have made us wonder whether there is any point in turning up to watch the inevitable defeat – Liverpool in the 80s, Manchester United from 1994 for the next two decades, perhaps Guardiola's Manchester City from a few years ago. Do memories of Ron Harris, Peter Storey, Norman Hunter etc. evoke the warm glow of nostalgia? Andy Hamilton, Jon Holmes and Colin Shindler fight it out. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Andy Hamilton, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes resume their role as selectors as they choose the best team of the 1960s from the English Football League as it then was. That's not one individual club or national side but a team composed of the outstanding players of that decade in some sort of logical formation that would bring out the best of them both as individuals and as team players. Players like Tom Finney and Stanley Matthews are ineligible as their greatest days were in the 1940s and 1950s even if their careers continued into the 1960s. Some of the selections will undoubtedly coincide with yours but some of them might surprise you so press play and start luxuriating in a nostalgic wallow through the days of our youths. In this episode Colin Shindler, Andy Hamilton and Jon Holmes examine Alan Hansen's notorious observation that you don't win anything with kids. It's rather a shame that his reputation as one of the leading pundits has been slightly tarnished by the fact that he said those words on Match of the Day on the day Manchester United had been well beaten by Aston Villa at the start of the 1995-96 season. United went on to win the double that year and we all know what that group of young Manchester United players went on to achieve. Karen Brady when in charge of Birmingham City aroused the ire of all football supporters but claiming there was no point in growing vegetables if you could buy them so readily in the supermarket. We older supporters yearn nostalgically for the days when we could follow the progress of local players through the youth and Reserve teams and into the first eleven. Those were the days when the emergence of 17 and 18 year-olds who cost the traditional £10 signing on fee gave more pleasure to supporters than does the current purchase of endless overseas players for huge sums of money. Or does it? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Guy Jenkin is a multi Emmy and Bafta winning writer. Along with Andy Hamilton, he co-wrote the sitcoms 'Drop the Dead Donkey' and 'Outnumbered'. He also worked on the films 'What We Did On Our Holiday', and 'The Sleeping Dictionary'.His new novel is called 'Murder Most Foul', a witty and fast-paced Tudor detective novel that plays with fact and fiction. In the middle of a deadly plague outbreak in 1593, William Shakespeare is implicated in the murder of his friend and rival, Christopher Marlowe. Teaming up with Marlowe's sister and his former flame Ann, they embark on a quest to clear his name, uncovering a web of treachery and corruption that inspires Shakespeare's future masterpieces. You can hear how much he enjoyed the research, so much so that he had to drag himself away to finally write the story. He reveals why it's normally the smallest, hardest to find details, that bring the story to life. We discuss why it's taken him so long to write a novel, after a long career in screenwriting, and how he learned to actually do it.We talk about 'Outnumbered', and why it was much more scripted than many believed, and what it taught him about writing novels. You can support the show at -patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutineGet a copy of the book - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Andy Hamilton returns to join Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes as they discuss the contentious subject of football pundits. By pundits, they mean those know-it-alls who are either very wise after the event, are outstanding at stating the bleeding obvious or are as clueless as the rest of us when it comes to predicting the future. Yet somehow, they have become increasingly important in the broadcasting of football on radio and particularly television. Indeed the BBC Director General, guided by the new BBC Head of Sport, recently told us that audiences would prefer to listen to the pundits rather than watch the highlights of the match. Contentious? We should say so. In the days of Kenneth Wolstenholme and David Coleman, John Motson and Barry Davies there were very few pundits besides Jimmy Hill and we related largely to those commentators unless there was a World Cup panel. Why have the pundits become so important in recent years? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In this edition of the podcast, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes are joined by Andy Hamilton to talk in a very headmasterly tone about Onfield Behaviour which quite frankly is bringing the good name of the Football Ruined My Life school into disgrace. In a Champions League quarter final this season two Real Madrid boys in the Lower Sixth, Rudiger and Mbappe, were shown on television after a fortunate win over their rival boys school Atletico Madrid making obscene gestures. Rudiger was appearing to make a throat-slitting motion, apparently towards the Atletico crowd, while Mbappe was shown seemingly making a crotch-grabbing gesture. Both boys then had to report to Mr Infantino's study after Assembly where it would appear nothing at all happened to them. Government regulations unfortunately no longer permit Sir Stanley Rous to give both those boys a severe caning which would have happened in the more enlightened 1960s. Has onfield behaviour deteriorated so badly in recent years or does football simply reflect an increasing disregard for authority which can be seen in so many facets of society in the 21st century? Emerging from the same mid-90s Chicago scene that saw bands like Veruca Salt, Loud Lucy, Menthol, Triple Fast Action, and Local H get signed to major labels, Fig Dish delivered alternative guitar rock that paid homage to the legends of Mt. Rockmore - Zander, Mascis, Mould, and Westerberg - under the Polygram Records (and subsidiaries) banner. Their discovery is the stuff of legend: the band sent demo cassettes to various major labels with a handwritten note from “Steve,” claiming to have found a band worth checking out, banking on the idea that everyone knows a Steve and the label would think it was a genuine tip. Despite their immediately catchy songs that could easily fit into any alternative rock radio playlist, the band (Blake Smith - vocals/guitar, Rick Ness - vocals/guitar, Mike Willison - bass, Andy Hamilton - drums) struggled to grasp the elusive brass ring. Their single “Seeds” was released with a video but saw limited play on MTV's 120 Minutes. Touring across the country, they opened for acts like Juliana Hatfield, Veruca Salt, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Owsley, and Walt Mink. However, their 1995 album, That's What Love Songs Often Do, produced by Lou Giordano, failed to make a significant impact. Their 1997 follow-up, When Shove Goes Back to Push, recorded under challenging circumstances, also ended up in used CD bins despite featuring some of the catchiest rock tunes of the year. In a last-ditch effort, the band filmed a video for “When Shirts Get Tight” featuring adult film stars in humorous, over-the-top scenarios. The video, too risqué for MTV, became more myth than reality. By 1998, Fig Dish's tenure with Polygram ended unceremoniously. They recorded new songs at Andy Gerber's Million Yen studio in Chicago, hoping for a second chance that never materialized. Smith and Willison went on to form Caviar (known for “Tangerine Speedo”), while Ness and Bill Swartz (who played drums on Shove) formed Ness. Recently, Forge Again Records from Chicago reached out to the band to release their two albums on vinyl for the first time. While the band agreed, navigating the bureaucratic red tape with record labels has been time-consuming. In the meantime, Forge Again asked if Fig Dish had any unreleased material, leading to the release of their 1998 demos as Feels Like the Very Second Time on vinyl. In this interview, Smith and Ness reveal there was no dramatic story behind the band's breakup; the members remain friends and stay in touch. While they won't be quitting their day jobs to relive their (less than) glory days, there's a strong possibility that Fig Dish will release new material in the near future. Did MTV make Duran Duran, or did Duran Duran make MTV? Perhaps a little of both. What is beyond doubt is that Rio, the band's second studio album, would propel Duran Duran into a worldwide new wave and dance phenomenon, and would be a major offensive of the Second British Invasion in the United States.Duran Duran had found success in the UK with their self-titled debut album in 1981, and expectations were high for the group. Rio would find the band leaning heavily on upbeat tracks, a couple of synth-heavy ballads, and more experimentation with musical sounds and instruments than their first album. Many tracks also had accompanying videos, leaning into the MTV market. The photogenic appeal of the band also bolstered the popularity of their videos.Critics were neutral to negative on the album when released, but the commercial appeal was stunning. Duran Duran would dominate American charts from the back half of 1982 throughout 1983, and the band would become an icon of 1980's music. The album was released in May of 1982, but was recorded in January through March of 1982, resulting in our placement of the album in this month. Brian joins us in Wayne's absence, while Rob brings us this iconic New Wave album for today's podcastRioThe title track was the third single released from the album. Bassist John Taylor came up with the title, reflecting optimism and an exotic feel for the album. Sounds at the start of the song were created by throwing small metal rods onto the strings of a grand piano. Andy Hamilton is the saxophone soloist on this track.New ReligionThis deeper cut leads off side two of the album, and is a dialogue between the ego and the alter-ego, featuring conflicting voices in the chorus. The song is a bit darker than others on the album. "I'm talking for free, I can't stop myself - It's a new religion. I've something to see, I can't help myself - It's a new religion."Last Chance on the StairwayAnother deeper cut, the lyrics to this song talk about taking chances and testing limits. "And please don't say leave till later, I've had my last chance on the stairway."Save a PrayerThis ballad was Duran Duran's biggest hit in the UK at the time, though not originally released as a single in the US. The lyrics depict two strangers falling into a one-night stand, living in the moment and letting the consequences wait for a later time. The synthesizers create a beautiful but haunting sonic landscape. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “The Thing”Not to be confused with the Fantastic Four character, this John Carpenter film depicts a research team in Antarctica encountering a hostile extraterrestrial who can assimilate then imitate humans. STAFF PICKS:Leather and Lace by Don Henley and Stevie Nicks Brian brings us a duet from alumni of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks wrote this song about a relationship between two very different individuals, based on her own experiences in relationships with both Don Henley and fellow Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham.Love is Like a Rock by Donnie IrisBruce features the second single from Iris's second album, "King Cool." It has an infectious riff. It went to number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song originated as an instrumental jam, with lyrics added afterwards.Physical by Olivia Newton-John While Lynch takes some grief for bringing such a pop song into this rock broadcast, the single was a monster hit in the 80's. While the video would portray scenes of exercise in the gym, the lyrics were considered much more sexual and controversial at the time.Addicted by Le Roux Rob closes out the staff picks with a rocking hit lost in time. Le Roux is a band from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Roux is a cajun thickening base for gumbo. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:I Advance Masked by Andy Summers & Robert FrippPolice guitarist Andy Summers and long time King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp had this instrumental rock track out on which we end the podcast. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant and I want to let you know, this is the scoreboard show of record. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS. Top dual of the night, No. 25 Stevens Institute knocked of No. 11 Coast Guard 18-15 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The dual had a couple of matches between ranked individuals. Coast Guard took the 133-pound match as sixth-ranked Chase Randall beat 10th-ranked Luke Hoerle 9-3. At 157, Stevens' Ryan Smith, ranked as high as fourth, topped No. 14 Noah Caskey 9-6 in a matchup between returning All-Americans. Trailing 11-6 halfway through, the Ducks won four in a row from 165-197 to ice the dual. Elsewhere in Division III, Coe bested Buena Vista 45-9 to open up action in the American Rivers Conference. Will Esmoil, L.J. Richardson and Mathieu Arsenault picked up falls for the Kohawks (with a K) and head coach John Oostendorp - he beat Rulon Gardner back in the day by the way. McDaniel beat Division II Frostburg State 30-14. No. 12 Ashland edged No. 21 Mercyhurst 20-19 on criteria. Ashland took the victory on the third criteria, most match points 77-76. This is again one of those things that makes me wonder why the heck we don't just do match points. Wade Schalles has been touting a version of it for years. Andy Hamilton and Kyle Klingman went through and came up with a system. If we're changing points in individual matches for whatever reason, why don't we just change dual meet scoring to match the output of the athletes? Kutztown pulled away from Shippensburg, winning three of the last four weights to come away with a 33-18 win in a battle of PSAC squads. The Golden Bears improved to 2-0 on the season. Emmanuel beat Emory & Henry 45-3 and San Francisco State won a Bay Area battle, topping NAIA Menlo 43-9. In the NAIA, second-ranked Life University used a squad mostly of reserves and smashed Brewton-Parker 45-9. 10th-ranked Myles Starke did get the go for Life at 184 pounds. He picked up a technical fall over Charles Henkel. All seven victories were bonus victories for the Friends University Falcons as the flew past Bethany (Kan.) 39-18. Reigning KCAC Men's Wrestler of the Week Gunnar Henderson pinned Nathaniel Zabala in 2:33, while Thomas Vasquez, Jamie Mitchell and Gustavo Renteria also got their hand raised after they had the win by pin. It was also the first dual win for new men's head wrestling coach Tyler Mies. On the women's side, Grand View beat Baker 32-8. Emmanuel beat Emory & Henry 44-2. My thoughts are with my man Chris Mecate, a past two-time All-American at that place in Norfolk and current assistant coach at Mt. San Antonio College in SoCal. Mecate's dad passed away in the past few days and I wanted to drop a line with my condolences to a guy I haven't seen in a while. December 6 was a tough one here, it would have been my late father's birthday. Mt. Here's the good stuff for Thursday, October 19.-The University of Iowa's women's wrestling team is making history as the first Division I Power Five school to introduce a women's wrestling program. Led by Head Coach Clarissa Chun, the team is set to kick off its inaugural season on November 4 against East Stroudsburg University. The team is not only breaking new ground but also aims to set the standard for future women's wrestling programs across the nation. There's three stories in the newsletter today, with coverage from The Daily Iowan, The Gazette and WIN Magazine. -In podcasts, Andy Hamilton and Kyle Klingman talk with new Stanford head wrestling coach Chris Ayres on the most recent episode of On The Mat. Ayres spent 17 years as the head coach at Princeton University in New Jersey, taking the team from the bottom of Division I to putting Pat Glory on the top of the podium this past March. Glory was Princeton's first N.C.A.A. champion since 1951. You can listen to the show here at Mat Talk Online.-The Rhode Island Interscholastic League is set to offer girls wrestling weight classes for the first time in its history, starting with the this winter sports season. This groundbreaking move includes the integration of female wrestling into the existing Dual Meet Schedule and In-State Tournaments, as well as the addition of 12 exclusive weight classes for females at the R.I.I.L. State and New England Championships. The decision comes amid a surge in girls' participation in wrestling nationwide, with the number of female wrestlers in the RIIL alone jumping from 8 in 2014 to 68 last season. The state becomes the 44th in the country to sponsor girls wrestling at the high school level.-The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has announced the approval of freestyle wrestling for the Girls Wrestling State Championships, making New York the first state to offer a scholastic freestyle state wrestling championship. The freestyle rules will be fully implemented in fall of 2024.. Kyra Barry, USA Wrestling Women's Leader and chair of the New York Girls Wrestling Working Group, praised the decision, highlighting that it was a result of collective efforts and will benefit future generations of female wrestlers. More on that story is at FloWrestling.-Dr. Tom "Doc" Allen, former Dean of the Oklahoma State Medical School and longtime physician for the Cowboy wrestling team, has passed away. Allen, who began his involvement with wrestling in 1975, served as the team physician for Oklahoma State's wrestling team from 1995 to 2020, during which time the team won four NCAA titles and 25 individual NCAA championships. Honored with the Lifetime Service Award by the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012, Allen was remembered by head coach John Smith as more than just a team doctor, but as a great friend who made a significant impact on the program.
