Min 5: AHORA ME VES 3 (3 estrellas) La saga de los ilusionistas vuelve con Now You See Me: Now You Don't (2025), la tercera entrega de la franquicia que inauguró Now You See Me.

From a doomed Arnold Schwarzenegger/Ridley Scott collaboration to Will Smith's blockbuster hit, the journey of I Am Legend to the screen is as dramatic as the apocalypse it depicts. Three wildly different film adaptations, a legendary unmade version; this story of humanity's end keeps haunting Hollywood. This is not the first adaptation of Richard Matheson's book I Am Legend. Vincent Price battled zombie-vampires in 1964's stark black-and-white thriller The Last Man on Earth. Charlton Heston faced off against intelligent albino mutants called "the Family" in 1971's, The Omega Man. Each adaptation changed the creatures, the cause of the apocalypse, and crucially, gave audiences hope where the book offered none. With only 16 weeks of prep time, the Will Smith/Francis Lawrence version, this time named I Am Legend, spent years in development hell, and quickly went from a 40-page outline to a greenlit blockbuster, and to say it was chaotic is an understatement. Whole New York City blocks were closed off for filming, and one scene on the Brooklyn Bridge cost $5 million for just six nights of filming. One week into filming, director Francis Lawrence panicked and switched from practical makeup effects to CGI, extending post-production and inflating the budget. The team was still seeing finished visual effects shots just one month before the film's release, leading to last-minute reshoots to adjust the controversial ending.I Am Legend offers a unique blend of action and deep emotional storytelling, highlighting human isolation and the struggle for survival, with one of the bestest canine companions in film. Will Smith's performance as Dr. Robert Neville is both captivating and heartbreaking, showcasing his character's descent into loneliness, and the eerie depiction of an empty New York City resonates deeply in today's world, reflecting on themes of loss and solitude in a pandemic context. This film is based on the 1979 Stephen King novel of the same name, is directed by Francis Lawrence and stars Cooper Huffman, David Jonsson, Judy Greer & Mark Hamill. In this film, in a reimagined world set in the 1970s, a group of young men agree to participate in an annual contest in a walking marathon, however, should they fail to keep up or slow down, they will be killed until one remains and will granted a large money prize as well as one “granted wish”. This film was run through the grueling process of starting and stopping among studios and filmmakers, dating all the way back in 1988. It wasn't until late 2023 that the film got off the ground and began production. The film hit theaters on September 12, 2025.

The second half or 2025 seems to be heating up after a relatively lackluster start. This week, we cover the long awaited film adaptation of THE LONG WALK, the hard-hitting novella that Stephen King published as one of the infamous Richard Bachman stories. The production of this film has been on the table since 1988 with George Romero among others tapped to direct. The team of Francis Lawrence and JT Mollner received the final honors. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Interlude: “Cellar Holes from a Lifetime Ago” - Crone Outro: “Hybrid Moments”– Misfts
Enigmatic author Richard Bachman drew comparisons to another famous author from the jump, but it would be years before the truth about him was finally exposed. In episode 361, join Luke Elliott & James Bailey as they strap on their best shoes and take a long walk into the past as they explore the noteworthy history behind this novel, consider toxic masculinity's role in controlling young boys, unpack some surprisingly scandalous moments, and take some time to explain the novel's surprising ending. It took decades in development hell for an adaptation of Stephen King's THE LONG WALK to trudge its way into theaters, and now that it has, we're of split opinions on how Francis Lawrence's film goes about distinguishing itself from its source material, particularly in its graphic depiction of violence. There's also the matter of the film's very different ending, which we dig into once we move into Connections to compare how THE LONG WALK's endurance contest compares to the one in Sydney Pollack's THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?, in terms of how voluntary they actually are, what spectators get out of watching participants suffer, and what passes for victory in a contest where no one really wins. Then, in Your Next Picture Show, we devote a little time to revisiting a film franchise that came up repeatedly in our discussions of both these films: THE HUNGER GAMES. Please share your thoughts about THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?, THE LONG WALK, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Josh is joined by recurring guest Daniel Lima to discuss the newest film from Hunger Games direct Francis Lawrence, "The Long Walk." Mike and Kenny review and spot faith in the second film this year based on a novel by Stephen King, The Long Walk. Stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamil, Judy Greer and was directed by Francis Lawrence. The Long Walk was the first novel Stephen King wrote although it was not published for many years. Some of the film and faith themes we discuss from The Long Walk are echoed in later novels and series such as The Hunger Games, Squid Games. Faith Spotted: Persons of faith are called to be content with what one has Psalm 46. Greed in acquiring material, or social wealth and reptuation is contrary to the teachings of both testaments of the Bible. Set in the midst of a post apocolyptic America, the story presents 50 or 100 persons (depending on the film or novel) that are willing to put themselves in the gravest danger for a 1% or 2% chance to win a large payout. The countryside and towns are presented as bleak and the people as joyless with litte to no hope in life. Faith allows persons to find meaning, joy and purpose in life and Philippians 4 calls Christians to rejoice in the Lord, always as, regardless of one's situation, the presence of the Lord is always with one and the promises of the Gospel of new life bring joy into one's life, regardless of the challeges or even suffering one is facing. All life has value because all people are children of God. Killing goes agains the commandments of both testaments. Not only are such contests that pit living persons against another not acceptable, participating in, or watching / condoning, them are incompatible with the teachings and life example of Christ. Those in leadership are charged with the responsibilty of the welfare of citizens and others in their cities, states, and nations. They are called to act as shepherds in offering care and protection to all people. The film depicts the games as a way those in control distract and control the population in much the same way as the gladiatorial games during the Roman rule. Such a strategy is not faithful leadership.

You may think the American economy stinks now but it's still not bad enough to warrant the twisted walk that's portrayed in the movie “The Long Walk.” This movie takes place in a alternative history that resembles the 1950s. There was a great war and most people are in poverty. However there is an annual event called The Long Walk that's meant to inspire every state in America to work harder to make the country prosper again. A man from each state is chosen to participate in The Long Walk from a pool of men from each state who signed up. If you are the last man remaining at the end, you're rich and you are granted one wish for whatever you want. The rules? Very simple. If you stop walking long enough, you get shot dead. So lace up your Nikes and try not to have too much fun! The Long Walk is run by a character called The Major who is portrayed to be a malevolent, heartless blowhard so it makes sense he's played by Mark Hamill. Is it worth checking this movie out at the theater? Check out this episode to find out. “The Long Walk” also stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Roman Griffin Davis and Judy Greer. The Long Walk may be one of Stephen King's finest novels, but how well does it translate to film?Earth's Mightiest Critics look at the dystopian game show thriller, in which 50 teenagers walk for as long as they can while flanked by armed guards who execute anyone who stops. The filmmakers (which include Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence), take bizarre and often unforgivable liberties with the source material, blending elements of Death Race 2000 with tired armchair political messaging--all in the service of (allegedly) adapting a novel that demonstrated far greater economy and subtlety. But will that matter to casual moviegoers who never read the book? And should we demand more from studios who count on such ignorance?Join us for a spoilerific stroll that also includes your questions, comments, and SuperChats!Support Kicking the Seat on Patreon, subscribe to us on YouTube, and follow us at:XLetterboxdInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Long Walk (2025) trailer.Support all of Earth's Mightiest Critics at their various outlets:Keep up with Jeff York's criticism and caricatures at The Establishing Shot and Pipeline Artists.Get seated with The Blonde in Front!Follow David Fowlie's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Get educated with Don Shanahan at Every Movie Has a Lesson…...And Film Obsessive...and the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast.Keep up with Annie Banks at The Mary Sue....and We Got This Covered.Make Nice with Mike Crowley of You'll Probably Agree. And save your celluloid soul with Dave Canfield's Substack, "Creature Feature Preacher".

It's walk or die this week on Talking Scared, as we're joined by the screenwriter of The Long Walk. JT wrote and directed 2024's cult-hit Strange Darling, and now he's brought his pen to bear, in finally bringing Stephen King's beloved early novel to the screen. Along with director, Francis Lawrence, JT has created one of the best King adaptations EVER(!!) and he joins me to talk about exactly how they got this shuffling monster over the finish line. JT tells us all about his journey from actor to writer and director and his feelings about creative control. We discuss the obvious structural hurdles that kept this film from being made for so many years. We acknowledge it's strain of very dark humour, but also how seriously the movie contends with the threat of the gun in American life. It's a good conversation about an awesome movie.
