Faith McDonnell's talk at the Basilica of Saint Mary's 2020 Saints Peter and Paul Conference. The topic of the conference was "Christian Persecution Is Real." Jessica Davis is interviewed about her experience of taking a “gap year” after graduating from SUNY New Paltz. She is living with other young persons who are working to help others in a program called “Grace Year.” Grace Year allows recent college graduates to spend a year of intentional living from a base in Grace Episcopal Church in Millbrook, NY, focusing on spirituality, religion, and justice It is a year-long opportunity to live in a small community of young adults as they prepare for lifelong journeys of sustained leadership for the common good. During the year, the fellows live together along with the program leader, Abby Nathanson, in the Grace Church vicarage while they volunteer to work with local nonprofits. These include a preschool; youth programs for teens; EPIC (Engaging People in Change), a bilingual leadership program for high-school students; programs for immigrants; local farms; Hudson River Housing; and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Ms. Davis is helping senior citizens by working with the Church Alliance senior residence and Millbrook at Home, which helps senior citizens who are aging in place. When her Grace Year has passed, Ms. Davis plans to attend graduate school with the intention of becoming a guidance counselor. While we often focus on the Fortune 500 companies that dominate the world economy, another group of employers plays a fundamental role in the daily lives of millions of Americans: the churches, religious institutions and affiliated organizations that employ hundreds of thousands of clergy, lay workers, and their family members. This is a population with very typical health and retirement needs but also very unique practices and perspectives. Ably representing these perspectives in the advocacy world and in the American Benefits Council is the Church Alliance, a coalition of the chief executive officers of 38 church benefit programs. At the Institute of Religion and Democracy since 1993, Faith McDonnell is the Director of Religious Liberty Programs and of the Church Alliance for a New Sudan. She has drafted legislation on religious persecution for the Episcopal Church and for the United States Congress. In June 2007, her book, Girl Soldier: A Story of Hope for Northern Uganda’s Children, was published by Chosen Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group. She is a Contributing Editor to Providence: A Journal of Christianity and American Foreign Policy and writes for such publications as Breitbart, The Stream, FrontPageMag, PJMedia, and with Chelsen Vicari has a blog site, Faith&Chelsen: Tackling Tough Topics in Church & Culture, on the Patheos Evangelical Channel. Faith is a member of Church of the Apostles, Anglican, and serves on the church’s international missions committee. She serves as a board member for several human rights organizations.

Larry Hansen, an attorney in the Chicago office of Locke Lord LLP, joins Andy and Sarah to talk about Gaylor v. Mnuchin, a case before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago, regarding the constitutionality of the so-called clergy housing allowance, an Internal Revenue Code provision that allows certain religious leaders to exempt church-approved housing allowances from their taxable income. Hansen co-authored an amicus ‎brief on behalf of the Church Alliance, and talks about the case, the amicus brief, and why this case is significant for church workers.
