Beacon store merges brothers' interests Jonathan Garcia's plan for retirement was to pursue coffee roasting and open a cafe. His older brother Joseph wanted to open a gaming store where people could hang out, play roleplaying games (RPGs) like Dungeons & Dragons or card games like Magic: The Gathering, and make some friends. One day in 2019, as the brothers sat in a business class together at Dutchess Community College, they had a revelation: Why not combine the two ideas? Another revelation quickly followed. "Why wait until we're old?" said Jonathan. Last month, they opened Mana Potion Tabletop in Beacon. Alongside Warhammer figures and Pokémon decks, customers will find bags of freshly roasted beans and blended teas from the brothers' fantasy-themed Mana Potion Coffee line. The decaf, for example, is called Slumbering Dragon; the jasmine green tea is known as The Teamancer. Joseph is a former film teacher drawn to role-playing games because they remind him of making movies, with a mix of storytelling and improv, he says. Jonathan, who is working on his master's degree in business at SUNY New Paltz, has been warned by professors that most businesses fail in their first year because they can't attract enough customers. If his professors had been to the store's opening, they might have given him an A. "That door never stopped swinging," Jonathan says. The foot traffic hasn't slowed much. Even on a late Wednesday afternoon, customers filled a table while playing a battle royale variation of Magic: The Gathering called Commander. Hardcore gamers regularly bump elbows with newbies. Some customers say they haven't played since they were children but want a refresher. The coffee roaster in Connecticut who taught the brothers the trade was inspired to help them because he played Dungeons & Dragons as a kid. "We're meeting people who you wouldn't think would be into these games," says Jonathan. "They're an accountant, or they work for Verizon, but they're also into Warhammer." That's not surprising: RPGs have become a huge industry. Last year, the hosts of a D&D podcast, Dimension 20, sold out Madison Square Garden. Add in the shortage of places in Beacon for teenagers to gather, and it's no wonder Mana Potion has been busy. "Not everyone can go to the bar or out for a $30 hamburger every night," says Jonathan. "You can come here, grab a table and start playing." There have been a few miscalculations. The store stocks Settlers of Catan sets, but the game is so popular that it seems like everyone already owns it. Although gaming events throughout the week - including D&D for children on Saturdays and Warhammer tournaments - draw customers, Catan events have been a bust. "People didn't want to sit down with a bunch of random people and play a five-hour board game," says Jonathan. Because the store has been so busy, Jonathan hasn't had enough time to play many games himself. That part of the business has fallen to Joseph, who said he usually runs a different game every night. When Joseph started a Cyberpunk Red campaign, two players accidentally chose the same name for their characters. They decided their characters were identical twins, and they've since created a comic book together about them. "They took what I made for the game and created something new with it," Joseph says. While Warhammer miniatures and Magic cards are bestsellers, the brothers' extensive knowledge of gaming has led them to stock deep cuts as well. Shadowdark, for example, is an indie variation of classic D&D released in 2024 that's become a cult hit. The game's rulebook is displayed prominently. "People see that and say, 'Oh, you guys get it,' " says Joseph. "They can see right away that we understand this hobby." Mana Potion Tabletop, at 192 Main St. in Beacon, is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, see manapotioncoffee.com.

Today on the show, I get to chat with Marielena Ferrer and Viktorsha Uliyanova, a multidisciplinary artist and educator working with alternative photography, installation, video, and fiber art. Her work explores impermanence, the notions of home, and cultural identity narrated through the prism of memory. Her practice is informed by her upbringing in the Soviet Union, political repression, and the immigrant experience. In her research, Uliyanova explores neglected and overlooked histories, often using archives as a catalyst for her work. She received her BA in English Literature, Language, and Criticism from Hunter College and an MFA in Photography and Related Media at State University of New York at New Paltz. Her work has been exhibited at Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Baxter St., MOMA PS1, Participant Inc, Collarworks, among others. She is the recipient of New York State Council on the Arts Grant, Arts Mid-Hudson Culture Grant, Traverso Photography Award, Women's Studio Workshop SAI Grant, Sojourner Truth Diversity Fellowship, and Research for Creative Projects Grant. Recently, she completed a residency at Vermont Studio Center. She lives in the Hudson Valley and teaches photography at SUNY New Paltz.Viktorsha's upcoming solo exhibit “Quieter than Water, Lower than Grass” is a multimedia installation that examines the fragility of memory and its impact on history, immigrant narratives ,and cultural identity. This work explores themes of migration, belonging, and domesticity. The opening is November 8 at Roundabouts Now Gallery in Kingston, with a panel discussion on November 16 featuring Marielena, Viktorsha, and two additional women artists whose work addresses these same themes.Today, we talk about the meaning of the show title, and how this Russian idiom permeated culture and played a role in repression and control. Viktorsha shares about the layers of her creative process and how this show came to be. We discuss some of the pieces, their meaning, the process in creating them, and the meaning behind that process. One of the main pieces in the exhibition is an installation of suspended large scale cyanotypes of "Brezhnevka"s, prefabricated  panel buildings that were built in the Soviet Union from 1964-1980. They were built fast and cheap and can still be found and seen throughout former Soviet states. Our conversation weaves through themes of assimilation, (uniform)ity, culture, healing, memory, domestication, femininity, the multidimensionality of softness, and belonging.Viktorsha's Project Statement: “Quieter Than Water, Lower than Grass'” is a multimedia project that explores the intersection between history, memory, and photographic evidence. The work employs analogue photographic processes , fabric, and video to explore remembrance, storytelling, and ancestral healing. Drawing from family albums, oral histories, and archival images, I construct narrativesthat have been hidden by the Soviet regime and are often invisible within the dominant historical discourse. The project takes its name from an old Soviet proverb which instills a behavior of keeping a low profile, avoiding any attention from the self, and acting in a way that does notgenerate conflict. The phrase has been used as a deliberate linguistic tool to disseminate imperialist ideologies, generate fear, and maintain repressive socio-political tactics throughout the USSR. This project outlines the importance of critically engaging with mainstream narrativesin order to unlearn them and see their limitations and biases.Quilts are powerful conveyors of the human experience. They are valuable historical documents and memory transmitters that honor storytelling and intergenerational knowledge. Using bed sheets , I hand-sew patchwork of imagery into quilt forms preserving not only my personal memories but also those obscured within the larger cultural and geo-political discourse.Each fabric piece will source from historical documents, family albums, and collected objects to explore, visualize, and underscore the complexity of post-Soviet trauma and immigrant experience. Blue is a color of peace, a color found in our dreams, our hopes, and our memories. It is the color of the sky, water, and our planet, Earth. The cyanotype process uses the natural elements of sun and water to register a photograph. While it is stable, the final result is prone to changing over time. Using this photographic technique allows me to address all of the themes that show up in my work such as identity, history, and memory, all of which are fragmented, mutating, and ever-changing.The project combines a collection of materials and techniques that reference matrilineage, ancestry, and transgenerational trauma. Through layering of fabrics and utilizing the deep blue hues of the cyanotype process, the work visualizes histories that have been hidden, obscured, and lost. The project examines the selective nature of memory, challenging historical biases and emphasizing the importance of community knowledge and healing. Keith Hack is entering his third season as the Men's Basketball Head Coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham. The Devils improved their win total by 6 in Hack's second year.Prior to FDU-Florham, Hack spent the four seasons as the Head Coach at Medaille College. During his time there, he coached the team to a 2022 AMCC Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. The team transitioned to the Empire 8 Conference the next season and he was able to help the team make the Empire 8 Conference Tournament in the team's first year in the conference. Before his time at Medaille College, he spent six years as the Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach at Ursinus College. Hack joined the Ursinus coaching staff after serving three years as an assistant coach at SUNY New Paltz. Keith started his coaching career in 2010 with Niagara County Community College.During his playing career, he was a four-year starter at Medaille College where he is ranked fourth all-time in career rebounds (544), fourth all-time in games started (93) and sixth all-time in points scored (1211). Hack was the 2010 AMCC Player of the Year, NABC First Team All-Region, three-time All-Conference selection and two-time team captain. 3x HBCU Coach of the Year, Robert Jones joins this week's episode of ​⁠. After another year leading Norfolk State to a MEAC title and NCAA tournament appearance, Coach Jones still has high expectations going into his 13th season as head coach of the Spartans.Jones is from Queens, New York and played his college basketball at SUNY New Paltz (D3). He was dominant during his career and was awarded all-american his senior season. He began his coaching career at multiple levels including high school and division 3 institutions before getting an assistant coaching job at Norfolk State. Coach Jones became the head coach at Norfolk State in 2013 and since then has only had one below .500 season. He's been awarded MEAC Coach of the Year 3x in his career along with many other coaching awards. Chris and Cristina sit down with anthropologist and clinical speech-language pathologist Seth Dornisch, whose work bridges evolutionary theory, biocultural analysis, and clinical practice. On the night of May 2, 2024, police forcibly removed an encampment of students, faculty and community members protesting the war in Gaza at SUNY New Paltz. It was the largest encampment clearing on a state university campus, and 130 people were arrested. Four student journalists reported on the events of that night for the school's newspaper, The Oracle. On this episode of they join the Times Union's Phillip Pantuso to look back on that night, and how what happened has affected their lives, their career aspirations, and their campus. She has studied with the late Kevin Rotardier, the late David Howard, Milton Myers, Ann Reinking, the late Tony Stevens, Dorit Koppel, and Savion Glover.Performance credits include Radio City Music Hall, Helen Hayes Theatre, Hercules on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre, the role of Arabian in The Nutcracker as a guest artist as well as dancing as a Rockette in Cremaster 3, an independent film at the Guggenheim Museum,  directed by Matthew Barney.  She has also premiered numerous dance works at the Two River Theater, Silk City Arts Festival and SUNY New Paltz.As a choreographer, Andrea has created over fifty repertory works for students and professional companies ranging in style from classical to Modern to Musical Theatre, including full length versions of ballets to full scale musicals.  Some of her favorite shows and performances include A Funny Thing...Forum, Chicago, and Guys and Dolls. Other regional productions include Grease,  Annie, Bye Bye Birdie, Godspell and Footloose.Andrea guest teaches ballet, Horton modern, theatre dance, audition technique, injury prevention and Pilates.  She has designed injury prevention programs that fuse dance, science and anatomy so that students have a better understanding of how their bodies work.  Teaching credits include Broadway Dance Center, Marymount Manhattan College, SUNY New Paltz, and Montclair State University. ILYASAH AL SHABAZZ – Third daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz, is an educator, social activist, motivational speaker, and author of award winning publications: (1) Growing Up X (Random House) a coming of age memoir; (2) Malcolm Little (Simon & Schuster), a children's illustration book and (3) X, A Novel (Candlewick Press) a young adult historical fiction. Ilyasah promotes higher education for at-risk youth, interfaith dialogue to build bridges between cultures for young leaders of the world, and she participates on international humanitarian delegations. Ilyasah produced training programs to encourage higher education sanctioned by City University of New York's Office of Academic Affairs. She served for twelve years on the Executive Youth Board for the City of Mount Vernon, including appointments as Director of Public Relations, Director of Public Affairs & Special Events, and later promoted to Director of Cultural Affairs. She is a member of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee at West Virginia University. She is a mentor for Nile Rogers' We Are Family Foundation. She mentors at various group homes, lock-up facilities, high schools and college campuses through production of The WAKE-UP Tour™ X-Tra Credit Forums—her exclusive youth empowerment program. Ilyasah has retraced her father's footsteps to the Holy City of Mecca, explored religious and historical sites in both Egypt and Jordan as the guest of HRH Princess Alia Hussein, participated in interfaith dialogue study programs under Rabbi Nancy Kreimer and Dr. Aziza Al Hibri, and served as member of the American Interfaith Leadership delegation that participated with the Malaria No More Foundation in Mali, West Africa. Ilyasah also served as a member of the United States delegation that accompanied President Bill Clinton to South Africa to commemorate election of President Nelson Mandela and the economic business development initiative. Ilyasah serves as Trustee for the Harlem Symphonic Orchestra, The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, and The Malcolm X Foundation. She is a member of the Arts Committee for the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center and a project advisor for the PBS award-winning Prince Among Slaves documentary. She holds a Master of Science in Education & Human Resource Development from Fordham University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from SUNY/New Paltz.
