Der 9. August 1997 ist ein Tag wie jeder andere. Die 20 jährige Cindy Koch aus Oberhausen hat den Tag mit ihrer Familie verbracht und sich für den Abend mit einer Freundin zum Feiern verabredet. Da ihre Mutter auf Cindys Sohn aufpasst, verabreden sich die beiden Frauen für den kommenden Nachmittag, doch die ansonsten zuverlässige Cindy erscheint nicht. Als Ihre Mutter nach dem Rechten sehen möchte, macht sie eine grausame Entdeckung…
Der "Karnevals-Mord" von 1988 hatte die Stadt zutiefst erschüttert. Petra Nohl hatte bis 4 Uhr in der Altstadt gefeiert, bevor sie sich auf den Weg zu einem Nachtclub machen wollte. Doch sie sollte nie ankommen. Nur wenige hundert Meter entfernt wurde sie Opfer eines brutalen Übergriffs. Der unbekannte Täter schlug auf sie ein und erwürgte sie schließlich hinter einem Bierstand. Trotz intensiver Untersuchungen konnten damals keine verwertbaren DNA-Spuren gesichert werden, und auch die gestohlenen Gegenstände tauchten nie wieder auf.
