Voltairine de Cleyre (1866-1912) was an American anarchist, writer, poet, and lecturer. Her radical and compelling works critiqued the deeply confining world of women during her time and would go on to drive the foundational ideas behind the second-wave of feminism.  For Further Reading: Pearl of Anarchy Voltairine de Cleyre: American Radical Overlooked No More: Voltairine de Cleyre, America's ‘Greatest Woman Anarchist' Anarchism and American Traditions This month, we're pulling back the curtain to reveal women overlooked in their own lifetimes or in our historical accounts of the eras in which they lived. We're talking about the activists, thinkers, leaders, artists, and innovators history has forgotten. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more.  Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. For the 31st episode of the Non Serviam Podcast, we spoke with William Gillis about an anarchy worth having. It's hardly controversial to point out that some proposals made by anarchists for post-state coordination suffer from similar issues proposed by non-anarchist opponents of the status quo. In this episode, we explore how said schemes tend to cause unfreedom through the suppression of complexity, or through the total bureaucratization of human life. As a solution, Will promotes distributed, fluid networks of trade in a world beyond the trappings of patchwork or endless meetings. What's a meaningful way to distinguish between centralization and decentralization? What are some examples of distributed efforts expanding freedom? To what extent would New Municipalist or Ostromite common resource management strategies be utilized within anarchy? We explore all these questions and more with piercing critiques, in this exciting conversation with William Gillis. William Gillis is a second generation anarchist, lapsed physicist, and transhumanist, who is interested in exploring the roots of things and expanding degrees of freedom. Introduced to the ideas of anarchy at age five and organizing by age thirteen, Will has gone on to become a prolific writer and political theorist who has undoubtedly made a mark in anarchist history. William is the former Lead Coordinator at C4SS who identifies most with Voltairine de Cleyre's "steal bread for the hungry'' style of market anarchism. Will's writings can be found at C4SS Dot Org and Human Iterations Dot Net. Will participated in a video interview with Non Serviam back in 2016 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leW18Q8SnMk) and has appeared as a headlining speaker at one of our in-person events in 2018 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbDtjv_S55w). ----- Will suggested listeners donate to the project's linked below (instead on Will's Patreon): https://bangladeshasf.com/ https://onsiteinfoshopphilippines.wordpress.com/ https://www.patreon.com/etnikobandidoinfoshop/posts https://twitter.com/rechelon/status/1393046705688436736?s=21 ----- Will's Website: http://humaniterations.net/ Will's Twitter: https://twitter.com/rechelon Relevant Articles & Links: http://humaniterations.net/2015/04/17/anarchy-is-a-scale-independent-proposition/ https://c4ss.org/content/52295 https://c4ss.org/content/53476 https://c4ss.org/content/51379 ----- Non Serviam Media Twitter: https://twitter.com/nonserviammedia Support Non Serviam Media: https://www.patreon.com/nonserviammedia View Non Serviam's Full Catalogue: https://www.nonserviammedia.com/ --- Listen to the Non Serviam Podcast on your favorite podcast platform! iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Soundcloud, and more. In this essay, Lauren Golder looks at gendered interpretations of free love and sex radicalism through the life of American anarchist-feminist Voltairine de Cleyre (1866-1912). During the Gilded Age, anarchist men often interpreted free love as a path to personal fulfillment and sexual liberation, while anarchist women saw it as a way to achieve reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. De Cleyre believed that anarchist free love was women's best hope for freedom from patriarchal oppression, a position which was reinforced by her experience of unwanted pregnancy and encounters with misogyny both within and outside of the anarchist movement. Lauren Golder teaches History and Gender Studies at Santa Monica College and Victor Valley College in California. Her research explores the intersections of American anarchism, gender, and intimate life, and she is working on a book tentatively titled Intimate Experiments: Free Love, Domesticity, and Feminism in the American Anarchist Movement, 1880-1920. By Ruth Kinna and Clifford Harper. Read by Barbara Graham and Jim Donaghey. Voltairine de Cleyre was an essayist, educator, poet and advocate of anarchy without adjectives. Voltairine's anarchism bore the hallmarks of free-thinking and abolitionism: the distrust of government and authority, sensitivity to injustice, anti-clericalism and confidence in power of individual reason. Carried into her anarchism, these ideas ran through her critique of government as tyranny, her calls to revolt and her view that social transformation depended on constantly challenging accepted standards of justice, or what she called collective consciousness. Freethought, she wrote, was "the right to believe as the evidence, coming in contact with the mind, forces it to believe. This implies the admission of any and all evidence bearing upon any subject which might come up for discussion." DeLamotte commments that "among the many subjects that came up routinely in late-nineteenth-century freethinking circles were marriage, sexuality, birth control, women's rights, race relations, labor relations … and the relation of the individual to the state."Little wonder, then, that, as Paul Avrich puts it, "between the anarchist and free thought movements there was a close and longstanding affinity. Both shared a common anti-authoritarian viewpoint and a common tradition of secularist radicalism stretching back to Thomas Paine," who was, of course, well thought of by "atheists and anarchists alike. Nearly all anarchists were freethinkers, and many … first came to anarchism through the free thought movement, in which they constituted a militant left wing within the local clubs as well as the regional and national federations."
