Born and raised in Tangier, Yassir is one of the most exciting and versatile selectors in Morocco's underground electronic scene. His sets mesh together sonic textures from jazz with pulsating house grooves, always featuring a fine selection of eclectic tunes from the likes of Cobblestone Jazz and Rhadoo. He has been dominating dancefloors at major clubs and festivals in Romania, UK and Morocco, and sharing the decks with global techno icons the likes of Traumer, Ricardo Villalobos, and Sonja Moonear, just to name a few. Yassir takes over our Select today with a trance-inducing mix of breakbeat, progressive house and techno, featuring tunes from some of his favourite record labels and producers like Kosh, Jeku, Olsvangèr, Rudolf C, and Sansibar.
Joining me this month for episode 49 is Canadian producer and live performer Mathew Jonson. Initially from the west coast of Canada and now based in Berlin, Mathew's upbringing in electronic music started in the nineties with the jazz-meets-techno live band Cobblestone Jazz. Collaboration and improvisation continue to play key parts in Mathew's music career, extending to inform his creative process, his solo work, and his techniques as a live performer. With this in mind, he created the Freedom Engine Academy, a music school offering intensive courses around electronic music production, music theory, and creativity taught by a roster of talented musicians and Mathew himself. In this episode, we're discussing collaborative learning, and how the group experience can make music better. ++ Music: "Magic Through Music" - Mathew Jonson (2020) "Chance" - Cobblestone Jazz (2010) "Rays from the Cosmos" - Units & Measurements (2016) "Lunar Lander" - Cobblestone Jazz (2011) "Typerope" - Mathew Jonson (2020)
We probably don't need to tell you who Deadbeat is. (He even did a previous RA Podcast for us, all the way back in 2007.) But if you need a refresher, he's one of the most important and revered artists in dub techno. The Canadian artist came up in the Montreal scene alongside other trailblazers like Akufen and other Canadians (think Cobblestone Jazz, Mathew Jonson, Wagon Repair, etc). His early records for ~scape are some of the most classic and influential minimal there ever was, but dub is always at the heart of his work, and runs in the veins of BLKRTZ, the prolific label he runs himself. Sa Pa, on the other hand, sits somewhere in the ambient zone. Originally from Adelaide, he's found a powerful creative sparring partner in Deadbeat. The two released their first album together, The Mountain, earlier this year. It's the 50th release on BLKRTZ and maybe one of the most monumental records in either artist's catalogue, a triple-LP that harks back to the hypnotic, plink-plonk days of yore with the strong cross-genre underpinning that marks Deadbeat's work these days, and plenty of lovely atmospheric wiggles. The duo's lengthy RA Podcast, taken from two different recordings at their Absurd Dub Lustre party in Berlin, mirrors the LP's sound, weaving through tracks new and old. It's full of warm, dubby vibrations and smooth transitions. Read more: http://ra.co/podcast/836 @sapaofficial

Jessica Diaz was born in Cordoba, Argentina It was at 12 years old when she truly discovered electronic music. 3 years later Jessica started studying Djing and also experimenting electronic music production. She started to play in some of the best clubs at her hometown, Cordoba. She got to know the House and Techno scene as well as cultivate her own taste and style in DJing performance, knowing what the club atmosphere means connecting people through music. It was in 2006 when she decided to go forward and decided to start her studies as a Sound Technician. Also she started working in audiovisual productions, radio, live concerts an at the same moment making music. Driven by a relentless passion for electronic music from across the musical spectrum, Mathieu Josso a.k.a M.Mat, has, of recent, become an inimitable stronghold for the Indian house and techno scene. Leading the underground Mumbai based collective Bhavishyavani Future Soundz, he has over the years headed events across the country with artists such as Laurent Garnier, Mathew Jonson, Chloe, dOP, DJ Koze, Dixon and Cobblestone Jazz - continuously touring some of the most exciting acts ever to have played India to venues across Mumbai - and that's why we like him. His time as one of the country's movers and shakers actually traces back to the early '00s, but it's his recent role as one of head honcho's and resident DJ's of the BFS collective that has catapulted him to another level. Brandishing him as a musical entity all by himself. Originally from France - and now spending most of his time in Mumbai, Josso is a regular fixture behind the decks - and if we were to be honest - has been meaning to get us this mix for a very very long time. Running for just over an hour, it kick starts with Uffe's lovely roller 'When The Sun Rose' - gently pushing into tracks such as 'Magico Disco' from Margot polishing off with likes of Die Vogel's 'Mesmerize', truly showcasing his ability not only as a DJ but as a selector of varied dynamic ranges within a very consistent and playful tempo. He'll be playing Magnetic Fields Festival alongside long time collaborator Charlee in an festival exclusive B2B format - and we're pretty sure it's going to be a landmark performance, representing everything there is to know about house, disco, techno and electro - both old and new. Well, maybe not. But you get the idea. "This mix was recorded in one go without touch up as a condensed version of a mix I would do in a longer club night exploring sound around disco, house, techno, electro, old, new, well known and obscure tracks. Probably best heard at an after party." - M.Mat For a tracklist and further info, head over here: http://www.thewildcity.com/EN/music.xhtml/article/4760-wild-city-066-mmat
