April 2025 Dante's Old SouthBuffalo Nichols: Texas based, Milwaukee raised, Buffalo Nichols is known as an acoustic blues guitarist and singer but that isn't the whole story. Two albums into his career, Nichols has proven himself to be an innovative songwriter with lyrics address both personal and political themes with biting insight. His influences range from his time playing in Baptist churches to his many years playing guitar in West African music bands. His experimental and hip-hop influences are displayed as well on his 2023 album, The Fatalist'. Nichols' self-titled  debut, released in October 2021, ascended him to the national stage, earning praise and support from NPR Music (‘Tiny Desk (Home) Concert;' All Songs Considered ‘Best of October') to Rolling Stone ('The Fight to Reclaim the Blues' feature; ‘Song You Need To Know'), Bandcamp Daily (‘October Shortlist') to Guitar World, Texas Monthly to Uncut (UK), among many others. www.buffalo-nichols.com/www.instagram.com/buffalonicholsmusic/Odessa Blaine: General oddment and possible cryptid, Odessa haunts the mountains and coffee shops of North Georgia. Buffalo Nichols believes in the power of acoustic country blues. He also believes it's not a fossil, trapped in amber, but a living, breathing musical genre. Which is why he blends elements of the tradition—slide guitar, resonator, open tunings, themes of loss, redemption, and struggle—with loops, samples, drum machines, myriad effects, and modern-day narratives. His new album, The Fatalist, is the culmination of his art to date. Listening to its echoes of Skip James, John Hurt, Pink Floyd, and Dr. Dre is an even stranger experience when you know Nichols started his career in the thundering, downstroke-chiseled trenches of the Midwest metal scene. When you watch this Rig Rundown, Nichols will explain, and play, it all—it's a fascinating story. And the gear! Get ready for a feast, full of the trad and the rad.Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrand D'Addario XS Strings: https://ddar.io/xs-rr

"The times when I'm writing the most are when I'm reading a lot," Carl "Buffalo" Nichols says on today's podcast. And wow is this true: you cannot be a writer of any stripe unless you read. Nichols likes to read voices that he cannot relate to. He mentions writers like Flannery O' Connor and H.L. Mencken, as well as books like A Clockwork Orange and A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He didn't even like them all, but he still felt that hearing those voices makes him a better writer. So on this episode we talk about how reading makes him a better songwriter, why being tired and cranky makes him a good editor, and why he likes to stop writing when he knows he still has something left in the tank.Nichols' latest album The Fatalist is out now on Fat Possum Records.

Milwaukee singer-songwriter Buffalo Nichols returns to Basic Folk today to talk about his new album, ‘The Fatalist,' out September 15 from Fat Possum Records. We picked up where Nichols' debut album left off, traveling the world hot on the heels of the blues. Following a profound tradition can be just as frustrating as it is romantic. In his years on the road promoting his self-titled debut album, Carl aka Buffalo has witnessed how the blues can be a home base for listeners' nostalgic, back-in-the-good-old days, artistically stagnant, patriarchal tendencies. He wants none of it. ‘The Fatalist' is an offering to the gods of change, of self-awareness, of integrity. One of the major achievements of this collection of eight songs is the seemingly effortless sonic collage that comes second nature to hip hop but is less discussed in roots and americana. From a Charley Patton sample to “Ali Farka” Touré-influenced fingerpicking to tasty 808s to contemporary songwriting that wrestles with what it means to be a good man in 2023, ‘The Fatalist' tells a story about the present, while keeping the past close and eschewing sentimentality. This sense of being in conversation with storytellers of the past is a pillar of what I would call the Black Art Tradition, and it is part of what makes Buffalo Nichols one of the most exciting artists in blues music right now.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Donate to #FreeBlackMamas: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/freeblackmamasDonate to Abortion Care Tennessee: https://www.abortioncaretn.org/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Republicans are fatalistic snowflakes. They are; we can be honest about that. They scold Democrats, and say they are too sensitive and politically correct. But the smallest thing, a tiny change, and they lose their marbles. Take, for instance, gas stoves. Just the mere mention of the idea of updating regulations and replacing those appliances and the entire GOP fell to the floor in fits of rageful indignation. This is the  party that holds the majority in the house; and that is what we will be discussing this time around.  Coffee And A Car Ride info: Twitter: @CoffeeAndACarR1 email: carcoffee8@gmail.com Apple podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coffee-and-a-car-ride/id1532064488 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6k3X7X4E4mx41R37ftFCwL?si=PQDWYkogRD6I8Ss3KS_ZNg To leave a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lou-ford1/message Sources: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RBAApWivBxA&pp=ygUeZmFtaWx5IGd1eSB0aGVyZSdzIHRoZSBjbGlja2Vy https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TME0xubdHQc&pp=ygUZQnJhdmVoZXNydCBmcmVlZG9tIHNwZWVjaA%3D%3D https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MEb_epsuLqA&t=25s&pp=ygUMc25sIDM5IGNlbnRz https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FJRQo5aawho&pp=ygUQY29va2luZyB3aXRoIGdhcw%3D%3D https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p6-jvkqX9hg&pp=ygU2TmV3IFlvcmsgcmVwdXVibGljYW4gcHJlc3MgY29uZmVyZW5jZSBhYm91dCBnYXMgc3RvdmVz https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GVrKoxCSnGA&pp=ygUfRWxpc2UgU3RlZmFuaWsgZ2FzIFN0b3ZlcyBNU05CQw%3D%3D https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C0EEQSPfvu4&pp=ygUfRWxpc2UgU3RlZmFuaWsgZ2FzIFN0b3ZlcyBNU05CQw%3D%3D

This is a bumper episode to celebrate Manchester Punk Festival 2022 in pseudo-review format. Sarah got together with Kaz & Big Hands to talk about all the highs and lows of MPF 2022. All three work behind the scenes at Manchester Punk Fest, so they've got a slightly different take on the event. They squeezed in a lot of bands alongside a lot of work, and they had a bloody wonderful time. Kaz is in Follow Your Dreams, who played two sets on Saturday, and Chris 'Big Hands' Hinsley is in Knife Club, and previously Revenge of The Psychotronic Man. They're an important part of the TNS family and the MPF team - two wonderful people who work pretty tirelessly for the world of DIY punk rock. They reminisced about all the bands we fell in love with, including the likes of Nosebleed, Snatch Game, Random Hand, Electric Press, Fatalist, Going Off, Forever Unclean, NEXO, Sewer Cats, Smoking Gives You Big Tits, Corrupt Vision, PMX and literally heaps more. We also discussed towels. It's a tad late because Sarah caught a horrendous MPF flu and has only been physically capable of movement or thought in the last week or so. Hopefully, everyone else fared better! Check out our full write-up of MPF2022: shout-louder.com/mpf2022

Matt Vasgersian joins Buster to talk about the Dodgers being a little too cute sticking Mookie Betts at second base, if we’ll see any ugliness between the Dodgers and Astros this weekend, if Zack Greinke is a Hall of Famer, why he’d take Juan Soto over Ronald Acuña Jr. and Fernando Tatis Jr., micing up players, and an interesting baseball memorabilia anniversary (8:25). Next, Todd Radom stops by to talk about Comerica Park and to administer the weekly quiz (30:24). Later, the Houston Chronicle’s Chandler Rome calls in from the West Coast to hit on Dusty Baker navigating this strange season, the Astros’ lineup struggling to hit for power and Justin Verlander’s return (39:12).

Wait, we’re going meta again. How is it that we always get trapped in the books we read? The Gospel of Repentance Ministries

What do I mean when I ask this question? Is God subject to circumstance, chance, or fate? Do things happen for no reason at all? Some would believe that due to all the bad things that happen in our world that God does not exist or he is not powerful or caring enough to stop it. Recorded back on March 28th, 2017.
