The Daleks are back! As restorations of the two 1960s Dr Who films are rereleased in British cinemas, Matthew Sweet lifts the lid on the most memorable monsters of post-war British science fiction. Expert guests will have 2000 rels - that's 45 earth minutes - to explore Dalek culture, politics and philosophy, and to explore how Terry Nation's creations carry the weight of the second world war, the cold war and contemporary arguments about race and difference. Matthew is joined by Roberta Tovey, who played the Doctor's granddaughter Susan in the 1960s film adaptation of the Dalek stories; Nicholas Briggs, who uses a voice modulator to give us the voice of the Daleks; political journalist Stephen Bush; and by Jonn Elledge, whose blog A Misadventure In Space And Time charts his project of watching every available episode of Doctor Who in order, from 1963 to today. Plus, the writer, actor, director and producer Mark Gatiss. Doctor Who And The Daleks and Daleks: Invasion Earth are being given a 4K restoration and screenings in UK cinemas across the summer. Naturally, the entire team find themselves repeatedly comparing the film to the original TV serial.   For those who want to watch along with us, this film is available on physical media through either Amazon US or Amazon UK. It’s also available for streaming on Britbox US, but sadly not on Britbox UK.   Other media mentioned in this episode: The Quatermass Collection (Amazon US | Amazon UK) Raiders of the Lost Ark (Amazon US | Amazon UK) Batman: The Complete Television Series (Amazon US | Amazon UK) Batman: The Movie (Amazon US | Amazon UK)   Finally, you can also follow us and interact with us on various forms of social media - Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. DALEKS INVASION EARTH 2150 A.D. is the second and, sadly, last of the feature films made with Doctor Who as the central character. Or, at least, the ostensible central character. As you might have noticed, The Doctor isn't even mentioned in the title of this science fiction tale. In fact, that is one of the odder things about this movie - there is very little Doctor Who! Why? Well, there are several reasons but with the great Peter Cushing in the role it's a crying shame that his screen time is so limited. Not so with the titular Daleks as they glide around enslaving humanity and digging deadly mineshafts with a plan to do something to the planet's core that I'm still trying to completely understand. Regardless, they are ruthless murdering metal monsters and they must be stopped even if their spaceship is the coolest thing ever! Stephen D. Sullivan joins me again to take a look at this classic little British export. We examine how closely it hews to the original television version of the story as well as compare how it stands next to the first of these cinematic Who tales. There is some disagreement about which of the two films is better so we dig into the differing tastes that elevate one over the other. We talk about the illnesses and accidents that marred the production, the strange product placement visible in the dystopian future and the sequences we feel the movie would be better without. We even get to talk a little about the fine character actors that started their Doctor Who association with this film. I've done my best to excise the worst digressions but, for the curious, there is a lengthy off-topic conversation appended to the end of the show in which we discuss Batman. We are geeky, after all! The show can be reached at thebloodypit@gmail.com for any comments or criticisms. Thank you for downloading and listening.

More than some of us realized! Certainly more than some of us cared about. As you may have noticed, we're sans Deb this week. With no one (but the hapless Erika) to reign in the troops, see just how far things go off the rails. (Actually, we remain pretty much on track until near the very end.) The Daleks' package holiday to London, Earth doesn't quite live up to the brochure; the idyllic campsite where they can park their mobile home turns out to be a rubble-strewn, dilapidated factory complex in the city centre covered in Sugar Puffs (other breakfast cereals are available) and the “world's largest open air swimming pool” is a filthy, corpse infested river! The vibrant, thriving, multi-cultural London nightlife is actually a bitter tramp and an underage girl who hospitalise several of the off-earth tourists in a multiple hit and run during a shopping trip. The warm, friendly locals they were promised are a bunch of homeless squatters who jump out from doors and alleyways to throw smoke bombs at them and even break into their camper van at one point to kidnap their dinner guests. Despite this they find a nice place in the country (well it's Bedfordshire but you can pretend) and start to build a holiday villa. Unfortunately, they're conned by a load of cowboy builders who don't seem to know what they're doing and then four environmentalist campaigners turn up and incite a rather violent protest riot, setting fire to the daleks' camper van and blowing up their new holiday home. A strong letter of protest to the travel agent is in order I think. Poor Daleks. Maybe they'll have better luck next year, when they go to Kembel…

Sadly Madoc, born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales passed away at the weekend following a short illness, aged 77.
