What a classic. From the 35 piece Parisian Orchestra to Ian McCullough's musings akin to Jim Morrison's finest moments, Ocean Rain ranks up there with some of the finest to ever come out of Liverpool. That's right, we said it. It also serves as a bridge from post punk British 1st wave into more interesting bands of the late '80s such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and Aussies The Church and Peter Murphy. Some of our sound clips include gems from Donnie Darko, Caddyshack, Seinfeld (yo yo ma), Reservoir Dogs, and many more. Enjoy!!Support the show
Scream, yell, make some damn noise! This podcast isn't about just Tears for Tears, It's about Primal Scream Therapy, dream rock, Donnie Darko, pop culture in the 80's through the 2000's, and about Tim doing planks right before the show. Listen while shaving, maybe after shaving! Listen now, or later, but be in the present! Hell! Take a plane around the globe and try to break the sound barrier in a rare scientific experiment if you want to! Maybe you will pass the private jets of the big wigs.Kick your feet up, or take a walk, just listen and forget some of your problems! Or relate your problems back to the content we created! Doesn't matter. It's all good baby cakes! While you are taking your Julie Roberts Pretty Woman style bubble bath just remember, the choice is yours between FEAR and LOVE!Support the show
Southland Tales came out in 2006 and was the ambitious second outing of Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly. The film had an absolutely insane cast of actors and plot that many found too confusing to follows. Following a disastrous screening at the Cannes Film Festival it got a pretty significant overhaul for it's.........which was also disastrous. This often cited as one of the biggest cinematic misfires in recent history. So what about this movie goes so wrong, and what was Kelly TRYING to do? That's what we're here to figure out
We're joined by the Gore Whore Lexie Redding to talk about our love for Jakey G. From indie films to blockbusters, he's been in some incredible movies. Recently we spoke about how movies such as White Noise, Nope, Independence Day, and even Donnie Darko seemed to predict future events in an eerie fashion. Others may think of The Simpsons or Family Guy. Some call this predictive programming but not all ‘programming' needs to be ‘predictive' in a conspiratorial sense. (POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT) The new M. Night Shyamalan movie, Knock at the Cabin, tells the story of a couple and their young daughter confronted by two men and two women while vacationing in the woods. The four home invaders try to convince the family that they need to sacrifice one of themselves in order to prevent the apocalypse. Each of the invaders wears a shirt signifying their relationship to one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse: red (war), black (famine), pale yellow (death), white (conquest). In the film the characters represent in parallel to the latter: penitence, nurturing, healing, and guidance. After each request for a sacrifice is denied one of the ‘horses' is killed resulting in a “part of humanity” being judged. Each of their deaths unleashes a new disaster on humanity. Red unleashes earthquakes and tsunamis, black unleashes plague, pale-yellow leads to planes falling from the sky, and white results in lighting strikes causing massive fires. The movie was released on February 3, 2023. On the night of its release a train carry toxic chemicals derailed in Ohio leading to one of the worst environmental disasters in history, which as of now is still ongoing, with countless people already feeling the consequences and many to become ill as a result. The next day a FedEx cargo plane almost landed on a commercial Southwest flight. A week later an American Airlines flight ran into a bus on the taxiway. A few days later a report came out about a United Airlines flight that fell 1,400ft out of the sky after take off from Hawaii. Long after the movie was shot, but before release, two other planes almost collided at JFK and before that the NOTAM system went down grounding flights nationwide. In the middle of all this, three days after the movie release, a massive 7.8 earthquake rocked Turkey and opened up an enormous chasm in the earth. A global fire has yet to be unleashed. Is humanity being judged or is this all business as usual?
The gates and walls of reality seem to be collapsing and our reality seems to be merging with other realities. A 2022 Netflix film called White Noise, about a train carrying toxic chemicals derailing in a small Ohio town, was brought to life when on February 3, 2023, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in the same town, East Palestine, Ohio, which was used for filming the movie crash. Some may remember the United Airlines engine that fell onto a neighborhood in Colorado back in February 20, 2021, almost twenty years to the date of the release of Donnie Darko on January 19, 2001. The movie Independence Day, released July 3, 1996, also seemed to predict the appearance of a city-sized UFO, which manifested in Phoenix as the infamous ‘Phoenix Lights' on March 13, 1997. Now with UFOs being shot down in Deadhorse, Alaska, Yukon, Canada, and over Lake Huron, and another detected in Montana, we are learning that at least one of them had “strings hanging off” of it like Jordan Peele's monster-UFO in the movie Nope which was released on July 22, 2022. The Lake Huron UFO was taken down on February 11, 2023. Such a craft reminds us of the 1956 White Sands story of AF sergeant Jonathan P. Lovette who was seen by Major William Cunningham being picked up by some kind of serpentine arm dangling from a silver disc. This all has to mean something. It also reminds us of Kenneth Arnold, who on June 24, 1947, witnessed several aircraft near Mount Rainier that he later described as flying “like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water." Kenneth Arnold was soon asked to investigate the June 21, 1947, Maury Island Incident in Washington State. Both cases took place weeks before the July 7-8, 1947, Roswell incident, of which it was famously reported that the Army Air Force “Captures Flying Saucer.” Before Arnold most UFO reports were of ghost rockets, foo fighters, and cigar-shaped craft by both the military and civilians. Just weeks after his sighting, however, a flying saucer supposedly crashed in Roswell as part of a series of additional crashes. That debris was, of course, called a weather balloon to take our attention away from questioning otherworld origins, and now 75 years later after a spy balloon was shot down of the coast of South Carolina there is renewed interest in the sky, which has resulted in numerous UFOs being detected and shot down. Some also noticed these UFOs are sort of like tic tacs. But we are not calling them UAPs and instead reverting back to UFO. Why? And is our perception of such things also manifesting them? Some are cylindrical and silver, interfere with electronics, and evade radar. Others are octagonal and maybe even evade missiles. Are they probes or drones, test by our enemies or by aliens, or just stunts to make the White House look good, and to obtain more money to investigate UAPs. Perhaps this is just the next collective hysterical reaction to respond to something harmless or misunderstood.

Happy New Year! We are taking a little break during the month of January, but don't worry! We'll be back in February with our newest episode - and a Sonia pick - Donnie Darko. Since we are starting February off with a Sonia pick, we thought it would be fun to revisit some of her past picks this month. We're starting with her first pick of the series, Face/Off. This is Sonia's favorite movie. This is not Gina's favorite movie. We had a lot to say. Enjoy!

“28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds. That is when the world will end.” In October 2001, a six-foot demonic rabbit named Frank materialised in front of a teenage Jake Gyllenhaal to issue that grave warning, setting in motion the plot of one of one of the great Halloween movies of all time. Donnie Darko was a time-twisting sci-fi curio about an emotionally troubled teen who after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident involving a falling jet plane engine, begins to experience strange visions. The result was an emotional, unknowable gem still inviting scrutiny and analysis today. The film initially struggled to find an audience in the aftermath of 9/11, then gradually became a legit cult obsession. 21 years later, fans across the world continue to attempt to unravel its mysteries. But the thing about Donnie Darko is the more you attempt to unravel it, the more it ends up unravelling you – that's the level of emotion and existential that writer-director Richard Kelly was operating at when he wrote the film, aged just 24.In the conversation you're about to hear, we break down in detail the mysteries and meanings of all the most intriguing motifs and moments in Donnie Darko. Discover the origins of the unsettling rabbit Frank, who shares an unlikely connection with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hear how Y2K concerns and election time anxiety influenced the film's atmosphere. And find out why the true evil in Donnie Darko is the puritanical streak that ran rampant in suburban America in the film's 1980s setting and still sadly exists today. You should probably also listen out for some intriguing details at the end about a bigger, even more ambitious sequel that Richard has been in contact with Jake Gyllenhaal about developing. Donnie's story may not be over yet…Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. *Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express week 3 and we're getting High Concept. There aren't many better (betterier?) ways to celebrate spooky season than curling up with your boo for a scary slasher flick. We've produced plenty of movies here at DT!HQ but none of them have been slashers. Opportunity knocked and we answered with web-based, stick figure-centric, flash game-inspired pitches to decide which flash game would make the best kitschy slasher movie! Todd comes in strong but it doesn't take long for him to pizza himself into a bad time. Matt has a bone to pick with 2001's Donnie Darko. Kyle sets a new record for longest walk on shortest pier which, on this show, is honestly the most impressive thing. We made a lot of new friends this weekend at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo! If you're one of those new friends, welcome! Also, the show notes keep going, keep scrolling. Step 2: Take a screenshot of your review, post it to social media, and tag us @debatethiscast Step 3: We'll read your review in a spooky voice during the October ad breaks! If we get 20 new reviews this month, we'll make Todd play Doki Doki Literature Club live on Twitch! Instead of the male main characters in TGG, here we have female witches who throw lavish parties on a magical island off the coast of England. A purple light calls those who need help to the house where bargains are made and magical liquor is consumed. We started The Green Pill Podcast in September 2020 to create a space to talk about change. Now we're going through a major change ourselves: in about one month, I head to trial to face criminal charges that could transform the rest of my life. And it's for that reason we're transforming the podcast, too. There's the obvious reason: I may not be here much longer to serve as host. Priya, Ronnie, Dean, and Chloe will step up in various ways to ensure the show continues. But there's a more fundamental reason, too. To truly create change, we need you to be a part of this. So while we're changing the name to Everybody *Wayne Hsiung* Tonight!, the two characters that are most important in the new titles are the two asterisks. You see, in code, the asterisk stands for a wildcard. And while the show will go on, following me via letters from prison if necessary, what will really sustain it is if *you* get involved. I can think of no better people to discuss this idea than the team who joined me for this first episode of the rebranded podcast. Ronnie Rose is co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere – and the first animal rights activist I met when I moved to the Bay Area in 2012. He helped us establish not just the intellectual foundation, but the values, which supercharged the grassroots animal rights movement in California and beyond. Priya Sawheny is co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere. She's been one of my most important partners in crime (figuratively, of course) over the last 10 years, and is helping launch a new org, The Sanctuary Initiative. Dean Wyrzykowski is the former President of the Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy and grassroots director in my 2020 campaign for Mayor of Berkeley. He's leading the operations for The Sanctuary Initiative. Finally, Chloe Leffakis, who joined us by Zoom, has been my social media lead (and sometime avatar) for the last 5 or so years. She's joining us as a founding staff member of The Sanctuary Initiative – and will continue to play a crucial mostly-behind-the-scenes role in everything we do. We talk in this podcast about what we've learned from the past 10 years, and our plans for the future. But, most importantly, we talk about how to get you more involved. No matter what happens next month, as long as we find ways to stay connected, and stay kind, we'll make progress. Thanks for joining the journey so far – and believe me when I say, the best is yet to come. The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky (novel)Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation by Sunaura Taylor (book)Axolotl by Julio Cortázar (short story)Mad World by Gary Jules (song)Donnie Darko by Richard Kelley (film)Music by Dayzee Deva (cover of "Everybody Have Fun Tonight”)
Podcaster, writer and activist Bridget Todd (There Are No Girls On The Internet, Stuff Mom Never Told You, UltraViolet) joins the show to talk about how dangerous Tony is, growing up in Midlothian (the town that Donnie Darko is based on), the decision to leave her PhD program, her love of teaching, her path to podcasting, growing up in the shadow of her brother, her highly successful parents' expectations for her, "you slip is showing," the importance of AOL chat rooms when she was 12, Noah Baumbach movies and more.
