The 17th installment of our Sci-Fi Shuffle has us discussing the 2023 animated film "Nimona". We try to imagine what this movie would have been like if it had stayed in the cowardly hands of Disney. Why doesn't anyone fully utilize their flying cars, and how does eveyone know what a whale is? Also, some less pedantic discussion about LGBTQ themes and representation. The original run of A Ghost Story for Christmas aired on the BBC from 1971 to 1978, bringing classic ghost stories to television and keeping alive the tradition of sharing supernatural tales during the Christmas season. In our journey through the series, we've covered A Warning to the Curious and The Signalman in Episode 21, Whistle and I'll Come to You and Stigma in Episode 32, and The Stalls of Barchester alongside The Treasure of Abbot Thomas in Episodes 41a and 41b. Just five days ago, on Christmas Eve, we delved into The Ash Tree. If you missed it, you can find it in our podcast feed. And tonight, as we stand on the brink of the space year 2025, we're excited to bring you Lost Hearts. Written by Robin Chapman, produced by Rosemary Hill, and directed by the series' creator Lawrence Gordon Clark, Lost Hearts is based on the 1895 ghost story of the same name by M.R. James. It first aired on BBC1 on December 25, 1973, marking the first installment in the series to be broadcast on Christmas Day itself—and one of only three to ever air on that date. Robin Chapman also wrote 30 episodes of Tales of the Unexpected. (Seek out episode 29, where good old Bernard Cribbins makes an appearance.) The film features Joseph O'Conor as Mr. Abney. O'Conor lent his voice to the narrator in (the best Muppet movie) The Dark Crystal, played Mr. Brownlow in Oliver! (cue James mentioning the exclamation point here), and portrayed the Coroner in The Gorgon—but more on that soon. Simon Gipps-Kent plays Stephen, the young protagonist. Tragically, Gipps-Kent passed away at just 28 years old. However, in his brief career, he appeared in several notable films and TV shows of interest to our listener. He played Paul in The Tomorrow People, had a brief role in Quadrophenia, portrayed Seth in the Doctor Who serial The Horns of Nimon, and starred in something called A Traveller in Time from 1978. which was filmed at Babington House, a farmhouse owned by the parents of Blue Peter presenter Simon Groom. In 2018, Severn Film Productions released a new adaptation of Lost Hearts, directed by Max Van De Banks. This version updated the story to the 1940s (and later 1953). After the death of Stephen's parents, the young boy is evacuated to the countryside during World War II. Unusually, this production was filmed in two parts: the main elements were shot in 2005, while the beginning and ending scenes were filmed in 2016. Louis Newton, who played Stephen in 2005, returned to portray him as a young man recounting the events to his bride-to-be ten years later. While The Horns of Nimon was officially the end of Season 17, efforts have been made over the years to complete the unfinished story that was meant to be the season finale – Shada. And we are discussing the “definitive” version of that story that released on the 2021 Blu Ray release, mixing live action with animation in an episodic format. Given that the production team had hoped that this story would make everyone forget The Horns of Nimon, we ask – is this story as great as its legendary reputation would have it?   Join us as we discuss the edits that had to be made to make it work (including new music, FX, and a couple of short scenes), Skagra's bonkers plan and his amazingly camp stylings, how this story could had been a four-parter, the pettiness of artificial intelligence, and (of course) Tom being Tom. Meanwhile, Reilly imagines how this could look in live action with plenty of alien villains in the prison on Shada!   If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). But will the Watchers find it to be as absolutely terrible as fandom would have it?   Join us as we discuss the weakness of the kids (are they actually WEAKLING SCUM!?), the OTT portrayal of Soldeed, whether or not the Nimon were effective, where all the women are, and whether the Production Team were simply taking the piss with this story. The declining Skonnan Empire is under control of a mysterious horned being called the Nimon. It resides inside a labyrinthine Power Complex on the planet Skonnos, and communicates only with the Skonnan leader, Soldeed, who reveres the Nimon as a god. The Nimon demands a regular tribute of young people, who are flown in from the nearby planet Aneth, as well as a supply of hymetusite crystals. A transport ship bearing the sacrifices from Aneth breaks down and becomes stranded in interplanetary space, close to a black hole. Outside the ship, the TARDIS materialises. The Fourth Doctor attempts to save the TARDIS from being drawn into the black hole by attaching it to the Skonnan ship with a force field. He and Romana then board the ship, leaving K9 behind. Once aboard they find a cargo of hymetusite crystals and a hold full of young prisoners from Aneth, led by Seth. The Doctor and Romana are captured at gunpoint by the co-pilot, who forces them to fix the ship using a hymetusite crystal. The Doctor returns to the TARDIS to get supplies, and becomes stranded when the ship's engines start. Steering the TARDIS away from the black hole, he travels to Skonnos. On Skonnos, the Nimon is enraged by the delayed sacrifice and threatens to withhold the promised armaments that will help rebuild the Skonnan Empire. The ship arrives, bearing the sacrifices and Romana, who are forced to carry the hymetusite crystals into the Power Complex. Within the labyrinth, the walls seem to shift and change, forcing them towards the Nimon. They discover desiccated husks of bodies, previous Anethans who have been drained of life. They meet the Nimon, who has the power to fire deadly laser beams out of his horns. Meanwhile, the TARDIS has materialised on Skonnos. The Doctor enters the labyrinth and distracts the Nimon, enabling Romana, Seth and Teka to escape. In the centre of the Power Complex, the Nimon operates a transit system, opening a tunnel through a pair of black holes. Large globes carrying two more Nimon appear. It is revealed that the Nimon are a parasitic race who travel via artificial black holes between planets, draining their resources, before moving on to conquer new worlds. They refer to this as "the Great Journey of Life". They are now abandoning the distant Planet Crinoth to take over Skonnos. Soldeed questions his faith when confronted with multiple Nimons. Romana accidentally travels through the tunnel to Crinoth, which she finds overrun with Nimons. She is assisted by an old man named Sezom, who gives her a mineral called jacenite which can be used to destroy Nimons. Sezom admits that he was the one who helped the Nimons take over, falling for their promises (much like Soldeed). He realized too late that the small tributes were only the start of destruction of the whole population. Romana is brought back to Skonnos. Amid a struggle, Seth has taken Soldeed's weapon, a ceremonial staff, and fitting it with the jacenite, he stuns the Nimons. K9, who has been held captive in Soldeed's laboratory, shoots the remaining Nimon. Soldeed is also shot by Seth, but sets off a self-destruct system to destroy the Power Complex. Guided by K9, the Doctor and his party escape from the labyrinth. The Skonnans evacuate their city as the Nimon Power Complex explodes. Seth and Teka take a spacecraft to return to Aneth, while the Nimon-infested Crinoth disintegrates.

The government recently announced proposed changes to the Marine and Coastal Area Act, which, among other changes, would require iwi to prove continuous and uninterrupted occupation of a coastal area since 1840 to make a claim. The proposed changes were reviewed by the Waitangi Tribunal, and the resulting report was released yesterday. In their weekly catchup, Wire host Castor asked Katie Nimon about the government's reaction to criticisms in the report. They also asked about the government's policies on Māori wards. Last year the National Party campaigned on putting Māori wards to referendums, with the goal of ‘restoring democracy'. Since asking councils to vote on the issue, all but two of Aotearoa's local councils have voted to retain their wards. Local government minister Simeon Brown has expressed some discontent at this response, implying that the government may push for binding referendums.  Wire host Castor spoke to National's Katie Nimon about these issues in their weekly catchup, starting with the Marine and Coastal Area Act.

The repeal of section 7aa of the Oranga Tamariki Act was announced earlier this year, and the government is reviewing submissions on the bill this week. In response, more than 200 members of Ngāpuhi gathered at parliament on Monday 5th August to protest the change, which they claim will continue the historical mistreatment of tamariki Māori in state care as outlined in the recent abuse in state care report.  The repeal of section 7aa also joins a raft of other legislation under this government, which has been criticised for its targeting of policies or institutions designed to uplift Māori voices or address Māori issues.  In our weekly catchup with the National Party's Katie Nimon, Wire host Castor asked about the removal of section 7aa and how the government is responding to criticisms. They also asked about the government's broader approach to Māori issues, and how they plan to address systemic inequalities through policy.

The Waitangi Tribunal recently found the government's plans to reinstate a rule requiring all Māori wards to go to a local referendum, is not in line with the government's obligations under Te Tiriti. Introduced in 2001, the required referendum was cited by many as a significant barrier to Māori representation in local government. Before 2021, there were three councils with Māori wards or constituencies. After the requirement was removed in 2021, 34 territories and 7 regional councils have Māori wards or constituencies, increasing Māori representation and strengthening the overall decision making process. This Māori wards legislation follows a slew of similar legislation surrounding Māori representation and the role of Te Tiriti in politics, with the current government continuing to remove protections and ignore advice or summons from the Tribunal. In our weekly catchup with the National Party's Katie Nimon, Wire host Castor asked about the Māori ward legislation and the government's relationship with the Waitangi Tribunal.

On May 9th the New Zealand Nurses organisation held a national day of action 2024, with rallies across the country calling for increased public health funding. While the government has introduced measures to increase the number of nurses in Aotearoa, staffing shortages are still frequent in wards across the country.  Additionally, there are worries that the recently scrapped Te Aka Whai Ora could impact the already struggling sector, taking focus away from those who need health support most and potentially increasing the workload for frontline health workers.  In our weekly catchup with the National party, Wire host Castor spoke to Katie Nimon about the government's approach to public health policy and how the disestablishment of Te Aka Whai Ora could affect the health sector.

Napier MP Stuart Nash is resigning this election. He was stripped of ministerial portfolios and kicked out of Cabinet after recent scandals, the latest that he revealed information about Cabinet decisions to two donors. Resigning at the election means he hasn't forced an electorate by-election. National's Napier candidate, Katie Nimon says no one would want one. "A lot of our electorate can't actually get to a poll even if there was one, we've got a lot of roads still closed. And the electorate goes all the way out to just out to south of Gisborne, so it would make for a pretty hard by-election." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Listen as Jimmy and Larry Kreider explain the importance of consistently preaching the gospel, how not to "cripple" your old and new churches, healthy partnerships, and why you should be willing to learn from others. Quotable Quotes: "Everything that is healthy grows, but not everything that grows is healthy." "We are called to advance the Kingdom, not part the Kingdom." "It's about the goal, not about the role." Highlights: We are married to the mission and to the message, but not to the method. Jimmy’s four main focuses when planting a church: Build a culture of prayer. Consistently preach the gospel. Intentionally make disciples. Create environments of care and connection. Listen as he and Larry Kreider delve into his inspiring testimony, including his desire to be born again and the leadership skills he has found to be most effective. Jimmy Nimon is the founder and lead pastor of Lifeway Church in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Previously, he led Gateway House of Prayer, a 24/7 worship and prayer center, which he founded in 2005. He and his wife, Lydia, both share a passion for reaching the lost, training leaders, and planting churches. Highlights: God can use everyone. It starts with a great God, not great people. Seek God with your whole heart rather than your conditions. Leadership starts with learning how to serve. Your calling is to help other people fulfill their calling. By aiding in another leader's vision, you can find your own calling.
