Tread Perilously celebrates its 500th podcast by going back to the beginning -- the first ever Doctor Who story: "An Unearthly Child." When Shoreditch area schoolteachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton have a conversation about an unusual student, Susan Foreman, their questions lead them to a junkyard at the end of Totter's Lane. Inside, they find no trace of Susan, but instead discover an out-of-place police box. Soon, they encounter a difficult old man who not only turns out to be Susan's grandfather, but an alien known only as The Doctor. And when he sets his time machine to 100,000 B.C., it begins a huge adventure for the foursome. Justin reacts to just how different The Doctor is in his first appearance. Erik recalls some previous episodes of the podcast. Susan finally gets a discussion all her own. Barbara and Ian also take focus, forcing Justin to reconsider one of his previously established archetypes. Erik tries to give producer Verity Lambert some of her due. The issues with episodes 2-4 are explored. The initial William Hartnell depiction of The Doctor leads to some myth-making about the show. Justin has a hard time holding onto Jacqueline Hill's name and the pair imagine other Doctor/companion teams dealing with the cavemen and their quest for fire.

The planet Quinnis in the Fourth Universe appears, at first glance, to be an agreeable, exotic refuge for the two travellers. But the world is experiencing a terrible drought, and the Doctor becomes its unwilling rainmaker. Meanwhile, Susan makes an ally in a young girl called Meedla. But friends are not always what they appear, and the long-awaited rain isn't necessarily good news… Write to us at prydonian.post@gmail.com Bluesky: huestone44.bsky.social www.thehuntresspodcast.com www.patreon.com/wrightonnetwork

We pay our respects to William Russell, the actor who played Ian Chesterton, Doctor Who's original leading man. With Russell, Ian proved to be a solid and dependable man of action and reason. Along with Jacqueline Hill, who played Barbara Wright, the two provided the moral centre for the early show, which relied on their decency, normality, and dependability to guide the viewers in the early mid-1960s along this amazing adventure in space and time. The programme will likely never see another character like Ian again. The opening music is from "The Chase" soundtrack composed by Dudley Simpson and the closing music is from "The Aztecs" composed by Richard Rodney Bennett and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2021. We recorded this episode on 15 July 2024.

WARREN CUMMINGS on NEW NEW DOCTOR WHO and the acting life of WILLIAM RUSSELL ENOCH With the sad passing of WILLIAM RUSSELL at the grand old age of ninety-nine years in early June, WARREN CUMMINGS wanted to join me on VISION ON SOUND to talk, amongst other things, the incredible life of this much-loved actor from his particularly personal point of view, as well as, inevitably, because that is the nature of this show, discussing a few other topics that happened to cross our minds along the way. As well as featuring in several well-known post-war British films, WILLIAM RUSSELL (who was also known professionally as RUSSELL ENOCH), played SIR LANCELOT in the ITC series of the 1950s, and, of course, schoolteacher IAN CHESTERTON, one of DOCTOR WHO's fellow adventurers right back at the very start of the show in 1963, and he had a long and distinguished acting career, featuring in many of exactly the kinds of TV shows that we love to talk about on this show, ending his career with an unexpected cameo in THE POWER OF THE DOCTOR in 2022, and could be said to have had the kind of career that covered almost the entire era of television itself, which makes talking about his life a perfect subject for us to be tackling. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on July 7th 2024. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Join Michele and James as they recount their memories of William in Doctor Who before handing over to Brent and Drew who interviewed him in person at a US convention in 2018. Rest in Peace William, and thank you for the unforgettable memories. Neither you or your contribution to Doctor Who will be forgotten. We are Most Grateful.

Meanwhile, David wonders what the movie would have been like if Bill Hartnell and the other original members of time team reprised their roles and how he would have reworked the script for the big screen. Opening music is the theme to Dr. Who and the Daleks, composed by Malcolm Lockyer. Closing music is the 1961 45" single, "A Lonesome Cup of Coffee", sung by Roy Castle and featuring Wally Stott and his Orchestra. We recorded this episode on 3 July 2022.

Doctor Who: the World Enough and Time podcast

Andy and Alex explore what has been called the most missing of Hartnells, The Savages, and find plenty to talk about. Why does Steven perpetually gaslight Dodo and why do Who fans not talk about it? What exactly are the Elders actually extracting from their victims and what is left behind? And, most importantly of all, who would have been a far better candidate to lead the troubled people of this planet? Andy was lucky enough to watch Josh Snares brilliant telesnap restored Episode 1 and the Loose Cannon animations while Alex experiences the fever dream that is a cartoon version of episode 4 in which everyone looks like Ian Chesterton, Dodo has been, er, enhanced, and Steven appears to have taken up ballet. Elsewhere, the Time-Space Visualiser has had an upgrade courtesy of Spotify and can only now play extracts from classic Doctor Who episodes, while this month's quiz answers all begin with the letter Z. Thanks to the wonderfully named Nanina we also have several guest appearances from 90s pop starlet Whigfield. Nanina also inspires us to discuss when Kerry Bishop got killed at a duck shoot in Neighbours and from there we also get to Joe Mangel's time on Dancing On Ice. This month's cover image was lovingly restored and colourised by Clayton Hickman and is reproduced here with his permission. Thanks for listening lovely people. Next Time: The Leisure Hive

Ian & Barbara are our first companions, our original audience surrogates, and such a large part of Doctor Who that it would have been difficult to see the production continuing without them. Their loss ushers in a new era and signals the end of Part I of Hartnell's time as the Doctor. The Doctor, and the show, is never quite the same. In a very real way, these two companions are never "replaced" in function--rather the Doctor absorbs their roles. Let's take a moment to celebrate these two companions who perhaps taught the Doctor more than any of the others--compassion and courage that comes from empathy towards others and the moral wherewithal to feel obligated to help.  The Doctor as we know him would not be the Doctor without his first two human friends.____NEXT TIME:For Classic Who: The Time Meddler (Episodes: "The Watcher," "The Meddling Monk," "A Battle of Wits," "Checkmate")--Monday, January 31stSpecial thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. Here we are again the latest episode from the triplets of Nerdity, that’s right folks those wacky goofballs have done it again. First up we have Buck bringing us news about new robots using the art of Kirigami. The art of cutting paper, in this case it is cutting and folding paper. This method has been applied to robotics with some awesome results. Now while it is only early days, we ask you to remember the Origami claw we featured a while back. With this in mind you will understand why Buck is excited, and Professor joins in with the excitement. This is just the start of the show and it is already looking fantastic.Next we look at the dismal lack of taste exhibited by the foolish bunch of weirdos in Hollywood behind the Golden Globes. That’s right we said it, actually Buck did if any snipers are being sent for reprisals. But seriously, just get those idiots to go look at some of the amazing work in animation out there. It doesn’t have to be all CGI, honestly Hollywood was built on proper special effects. These days they struggle to do anything outside a computer lab. While we are not meaning to insult CGI and the wonders it can produce, why can’t we have some proper animation and anime getting awards. When can we see some real special effects like we used to get back in the day. Not meaning to sound as grumpy as Buck or as old as a Boomer but seriously the talent involved in special effects was astounding.Last we look at a remake of Sonic 06 that is actually looking good. That is until corporate lawyers realised they could make money by getting it shut down. Take a moment and open the link, doesn’t that look so much better then what was dumped on the market like so much garbage? The amount of work involved must be mind-blowing, but there may be hope for the future. Want to know what that might be, well you will need to listen in to find out. You thought I was slipping and going to tell you everything, but believe me, there is so much more for you.We finish with the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. As always we hope you take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.Self-folding robots using kirigami- https://techxplore.com/news/2019-12-robots-self-folding-kirigami-materials.html- https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2019/12/11/1906435116/tab-figures-dataAnime Movies snubbed from Golden Globes - https://www.cbr.com/golden-globes-shuts-out-anime-films-promare-weathering-with-you-i-lost-my-body/Sonic 06 Remade by a Fan - https://www.engadget.com/2019/12/11/sonic-p-06-unity-pc-fan-remake/Games currently playingBuck– Pirates Slay - https://www.crazygames.com/game/pirates-slayRating: 4.5/5DJ– Frenzy Retribution - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1108560/FrenzyRetribution/Rating: 4/5Professor- Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition - https://store.steampowered.com/app/813780/Age_of_Empires_II_Definitive_Edition/Rating: 4.733/5Other topics discussedKirigami Definiton (variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper, rather than solely folding the paper as is the case with origami, but typically does not use glue.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirigami- https://www.origami-resource-center.com/kirigami-for-kids.htmlT-1000 (A fictional character in the Terminator franchise. @Tindogpodcast reviews   This title was released in August 2019. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until October 31st 2019, and on general sale after this date. River Song has many ways to amuse herself away from her husband. And with access to the Doctor’s diary, she knows exactly when he might be around, and when best to slip in unnoticed and liberate valuable trinkets… But first of all, she must ensure he makes it out of Totters Lane alive! 6.1 An Unearthly Woman by Matt Fitton Coal Hill School has a new member of staff: an educated woman, who seems to specialise in every subject. Meanwhile, teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright have concerns over the behaviour of one of their pupils. Susan Foreman is intrigued by Dr Song, but something else is stalking her in the darkness and fog of London, 1963… 6.2 The Web of Time by John Dorney The capital has been evacuated. Monsters stalk the Underground. For River, it’s the perfect opportunity to steal a priceless artwork, so long as she can avoid looters, soldiers and an alien invasion. With the gallant Captain Knight at her side, River faces the Great Intelligence and its Yeti army. But her biggest challenge may be keeping time itself on track… 6.3 Peepshow by Guy Adams Miniscope parts fetch quite a price on the open market – luckily, River knows where she can find one that’s about to be decommissioned. Unfortunately, this particular miniscope is chock-full of aliens, as well as unsuspecting Earthlings. River must face a carnival of monsters before she can claim her prize – across miniature habitats, Ogrons, Sontarans and Drashigs await! 6.4 The Talents of Greel by Paul Morris River visits Victorian London on the trail of anachronistic technology. But when young women are stolen from the streets, she takes a stand. River’s investigation leads to theatre impresario Henry Gordon Jago, and his latest star act: Li H’Sen Chang and the unnerving Mr Sin. But if River’s going undercover at the Palace Theatre, she needs to have a song…

Synopsis The crew is still missing when the ship lands on a planet the Doctor eventually recognises as Dido, a world he has visited before. The trio soon encounter two survivors of a space crash, Vicki and Bennett, who are awaiting a rescue ship, due to arrive in three days time. Vicki and Bennett live in fear of Koquillion, a bipedal inhabitant of Dido which is stalking the area. Koquillion encounters the time travellers and attacks, pushing Barbara over a cliff and temporarily trapping Ian and the Doctor. Vicki finds Barbara injured and rescues her from Koquillion, and they share reminiscences. Vicki's father was amongst those who died when the survivors of the crash, save Bennett and Vicki, were lured to their deaths by the natives of Dido. She is evidently very lonely, having befriended an indigenous for company. However, when Ian and the Doctor reach the ship tempers are fraught because Barbara mistook the Sand Beast for a threat and killed it. The Doctor enters Bennett's room, and finds things are not as they seem. The supposedly crippled Bennett is missing, and a tape recorder hides his absence. He finds a trap door in the floor of the cabin and follows it to a temple carved from rock where he unmasks Koquillion as Bennett. Bennett reveals he killed a crewmember on board the ship and was arrested, but the ship crashed before the crime could be radioed to Earth. It was he who killed the crash survivors and the natives of Dido to cover his crime. He has been using the Koquillion alias so that Vicki would back up his story. Just as Bennett is about to kill the Doctor, two surviving native Didonians arrive and force Bennett to his death over a ledge. With no living family and nothing left for her on Dido, Vicki is welcomed aboard the TARDIS.
