In the quiet town of Rumford, Maine, where folks are used to the crisp, white snow of winter, residents woke up to a startling sight: their town blanketed in an unusual brown snow. The unusual phenomenon was caused by a malfunction at a century-old paper mill; In the wake of Storm Bert's fury in November, the village of Pant in the city of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales is dealing with a colossal sinkhole that suddenly yawned open on Dec. 1. The enormous chasm, now a staggering 40 feet deep and 33 feet wide, has forced the evacuation of approximately 30 homes, displacing residents during the holidays. Learn more about your ad choices. Jonathan Thomas looks at the history and work of the Salvation Army in Wales as it celebrates 150 years since its first mission to Cardiff, followed later by missions to Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and many other towns around Wales. Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Roberts is the Army's current leader in Wales, and he gives his account of some of the movement's early days, as well as outlining its work today. Captain Canon Kathryn Stowers is the Army's Ecumenical Officer for Wales, and she talks about the organisation's radical views on the empowerment of women - it was women who led the Army's early missions to Merthyr, for example. Professor Paul O'Leary of the University of Aberystwyth has studied street processions in Wales, and explains why evangelising on the streets was such a provocative initiative that challenged Victorian notions of respectability. Historically the Salvation Army's uniform has been a huge part of its identity, but as Jennifer Le Zotte explains, there is more to this than meets the eye: in reusing secondhand clothing there was something challenging about this uniform. Even more intriguing is the special uniform for the so-called 'Slum Sisters' who tended to the needs of the very poor. She describes this as 'cross-class drag'! For many of us the Salvation Army is synonymous with brass bands, and Jonathan visits the band of Canton Cardiff Corps to speak to their bandmaster, and to make his own practical contribution!

His stated goal for the band was "to bring back show biz". In the band's first interview, Sullivan said of their sound: “Call it Latin American jazz with funk and African leanings – plus a few others because all of us have adventurous musical tastes.” Sullivan co-wrote most of the band's original material; he also painted the distinctive cubist art that adorned most of the band's releases.

Ian Watkins, the former frontman of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was once celebrated for his musical talent and success. However, his life and career took a disturbing turn with criminal charges that shocked fans and the world. In this episode of Lesser Known People, we delve into the complex story of Ian Watkins, mixing our usual humor with the seriousness this subject demands. Ian Watkins was born in 1977 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. He co-founded Lostprophets in 1997, and the band quickly gained a dedicated following. Their debut album, Thefakesoundofprogress, showcased Watkins' vocal prowess and lyrical talent, propelling the band into the limelight. As the band's success grew, Watkins' personal life began to unravel. He struggled with substance abuse, and his behavior became increasingly erratic. Despite the challenges, Lostprophets continued to release successful albums and tour internationally. In December 2012, the music world was shaken by the arrest of Ian Watkins on multiple charges, including child sex offenses. The news sent shockwaves through the band's fanbase and the broader music community, leading to the immediate disbandment of Lostprophets. The story of Ian Watkins serves as a grim reminder of the darker side of fame and the importance of justice for victims. We hope our episode sheds light on this complex issue while providing insight into how such events can deeply affect both fans and the industry.

In this episode, Ishreen Bradley interviews Flo Williams, a Welsh international rugby player, about breaking the wheel of power and privilege in sport. Flo shares her journey from playing rugby as a young girl to representing Wales at a national level. She discusses the challenges faced by female athletes, including the lack of support and recognition compared to their male counterparts. Flo also highlights the societal perceptions and stereotypes that women in sport have to overcome. The episode explores the importance of advocating for equality in sport and the need for change to create a level playing field. KEY TAKEAWAYS Flo Williams, a Welsh international rugby player, has broken stereotypes and challenges in the sport, proving that women can excel in rugby and relish its physical challenge. Privilege and power imbalances exist in the sport of rugby, with the male game often receiving more resources, support, and recognition compared to the female game. Female athletes in rugby often have to overcome numerous barriers and hurdles, both on and off the field, in order to succeed and be celebrated for their achievements. The societal perception of women in sport, particularly in physically demanding sports like rugby, still needs to change, as women continue to face prejudice and stereotypes. BEST MOMENTS"It's still they're seen as women first, it's that the elephant in the room becomes more relevant, that actually, we're seen as sort of guests in the house of sport, rather than just great athletes." "The people who make it to the top of their game in rugby and football are not necessarily the best rugby players or footballers, it's the people who can jump the most hurdles and overcome the most barriers and have the most resilience." "Even when you are trying to battle these things, I even feel like, God, this is hard work. There's always something that's frustrating. Why can't we just be celebrating?" "You're still battling against all of these prejudice and ideas that women shouldn't do sport and they definitely shouldn't be doing a really masculine and physical sport like rugby." Over the last seven years, his UFO investigation work has produced some fascinating and hard hitting evidence that has resulted in solid UFO cases such as the Pentyrch Incident, Denbigh Lights, Caldicot Triangle, Llantrisant Red Orb, and Mystical Lights of Merthyr Tydfil. His objective is to discover the true truth about the world in which humanity lives, because he has discovered that the officialdom on which many of these things are presented to the world is riddled with errors and corruption. Gari is a political activist who works to expose the UK government, businesses, and mainstream media as corrupt. When he's not doing that, Gari has spent the last ten years pursuing his interests in photography, art, and reading. With numerous sightings and paranormal/supernatural experiences throughout my life, I can't help but believe that something has led me to this strange and largely unknown reality in which I now find myself. A family of four in the early hours of the morning at approximately 3 am saw from the upstairs window of their home during a windy, rainy, stormy night, a mystical oval outline that had bright lights coming from its exterior.Video recordings were made of this object and the local police in the area were also called to try to ascertain what the object might be. Shortly after a local UFO researcher did an initial investigation and discovered some initial evidence that he was convinced that there was no rational explanation for this sighting.Six years later, the author (Gari Jones) came across the case and in April 2018 conducted an in-depth investigation and put together a video report concluding that indeed this was a genuine UFO sighting with great corroborating evidence. This book details the full investigation carried out by all concerned. Hannah Phillips first experiences in running had an element of a comedy sketch about them. She was first prompted to run after seeing a "fat girl" wearing the same top she had on - a girl who turned out to be her reflection. Spurred on, she set out to run round her home town of Merthyr Tydfil, only to be stopped by the police for wearing a balaclava she had donned to hide her identity. Since then, running - in slightly more conventional ways - has changed Hannah's life. After falling in love with the sport, she decided to run a marathon - a move which prompted her to write a book about her experiences. That book, 'No Run Intended,' became an unexpected bestseller and propelled her to a job with Welsh Athletics, encouraging other people to take up running. Along the way running also helped Hannah deal with the heartache of miscarriage, restoring her faith in her body's capabilities...   ---------------------------------- Subscribe to our Substack newsletter at https://runningtales.substack.com If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward

He was born and raised in Merthyr Tydfil which is a small borough that lies to the north of Cardiff in Wales. Ian was a content and happy child who loved the outdoors and his family. He was intelligent and sociable and made friends easily. As Ian reached his middle school years he developed a passion for music. No matter the instrument Ian would figure out how to play it. His bright and inquisitive mind meant he enjoyed the thrill of learning something new and it didn't take long for his family to realise he had a real talent for entertainment through his musical passions. When Ian started attending Hawthorn High School and became more independent with his music tastes he was drawn to rock and metal music and began to listen to artists like Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Megadeth. It was during this time that Ian met Mike Lewis who would become a lifelong friend. The two had a mutual passion for both listening to and playing metal music. In 1991 the pair decided to form their own rock band which they called Aftermath. The genre of music they played together was known as thrash metal and the pair would spend every spare moment in Ian's back garden writing or playing their own music. Whilst his parents didn't understand the genre they encouraged his musical talents and supported his passions. In 2009 he decided to branch out on his own in a side venture. He started a project he called "L'Amour La Morgue". "L'Amour La Morgue" was much more about music production than musical performance. The 17 tracks he released under this moniker were comprised of remixes of popular songs from a broad range of genres such as Beyonce, the Killers, Tears for Fears, Bring me the Horizon and Young Guns. In 2010 the Lostprophets released yet another album, this time titled The Betrayed. Given their huge success, they were now attracting requests for collaborations from some of music's biggest names. Yet again the album was hugely successful and the band set off on another worldwide tour. Just two years later, in 2012 they released their fifth album called Weapons. It was whilst they were touring to promote The Betrayed album that the image Ian had been presenting to the world began to fracture...NSPCCIf you're worried about a child, even if you're unsure, contact our professional counsellors for help, advice and supportCall – 0808 800 5000 Email help@nspcc.org.ukSAMARITANSIf you need someone to talk to, Samaritans won't judge you or tell you what to do – They listen! This is taken from the back cover of the recently published book about Paul Crump entitled 'One Armed and Dangerous':'This is the totally true, though almost incredible, story of a very proud Welshman.  A son of Merthyr Tydfil, once the industrial capital of the world but always a hotbed of Welsh sporting excellence.  They don't do it by halves in this toen you know, and Crumpy is no exception in that.  A quite remarkable man.  That man is Paul Crump.'Born without a forearm after the difficulties of a twin pregnancy Paul grew up with little or no sense that he was any less of a person than anyone else.  A keen sportsman he wanted, first, to play professional football.  On trial at Wolverhampton Wanderers he turned out for the Pennydarren XI Cricket Club.  Paul tells us how his performances got him referred to Glamorgan for trials and into the press for his exploits. In a hectic few years Paul was contracted to play for the Grounds staff at the Home of Cricket, Lords.  As well as talking about his experiences here and the people he met including England players Ian Botham and Goeffrey Boycott, Paul tell sus about his boyhood friends who have turned into lifeling ones.Paul's story is not without regret as he failed to get the professional career in cricket he wanted and by his own admission done some things that were not great.  In telling his story, you become aware of his prodigious talent and his strong will to succeed.

Joining presenter Huw Stephens to play live in the studio is Welsh musician Carwyn Ellis, who has been collaborating with Brazilian musicians and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Huw also looks closely at The Rules of Art?, an exhibition at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, which sets out the classical hierarchy of art, then challenges this by juxtaposing works spanning 500 years, from a Botticelli Virgin and Child, to a recent photograph by Helen Muspratt of a mother and child in Merthyr Tydfil. Rosemary Baker talks about her powerful film, Lesbian, that focuses on that word. It has been shortlisted for The Iris Prize for short films made by LGBT+ artists, awarded every year in Cardiff. This book and the book of Ruth are the only OT books named after women. Like Song of Solomon, Obadiah, and Nahum, the NT does not quote or allude to Esther. “Hadassah” (2:7), meaning “myrtle,” was the Hebrew name of Esther, which came either from the Persian word “star” or possibly from the name of the Babylonian love goddess, Ishtar. As the orphaned daughter of her father Abihail, Esther grew up in Persia with her older cousin, Mordecai, who raised her as if she were his own daughter (2:7, 15). Esther occurred during the Persian period of world history, ca. 539 B.C. (Dan. 5:30, 31) to ca. 331 B.C. (Dan. 8:1–27). Ahasuerus ruled from ca. 486 to 465 B.C.; Esther covers the 483–473 B.C. portion of his reign. The name Ahasuerus represents the Heb. transliteration of the Persian name “Khshayarsha,” while “Xerxes” represents his Greek name. The events of Esther occurred during the wider time span between the first return of the Jews after the 70 year captivity in Babylon (Dan. 9:1–19) under Zerubbabel ca. 538 B.C. (Ezra 1–6) and the second return led by Ezra ca. 458 B.C. (Ezra 7–10). Nehemiah’s journey (the third return) from Susa to Jerusalem (Neh. 1–2) occurred later (ca. 445 B.C.). Esther and Exodus both chronicle how vigorously foreign powers tried to eliminate the Jewish race and how God sovereignly preserved His people in accordance with His covenant promise to Abraham ca. 2100–2075 B.C. (Gen. 12:1–3; 17:1–8). As a result of God’s prevailing, Esther 9, 10 records the beginning of Purim—a new annual festival in the 12th month (Feb.- Mar.) to celebrate the nation’s survival. Purim became one of two festivals given outside of the Mosaic legislation to still be celebrated in Israel (Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, is the other, cf. John 10:22). About your Teacher - Geoff Thomas Rev. Geoffrey Thomas has been the minister of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales, since 1965. Born in 1938 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, he became a Christian as a teenager in his home church, the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hengoed, in 1954. After grammar school, he read Biblical Studies, Greek and Philosophy at Cardiff University (BA, 1959). He found fellowship in the Inter-varsity Fellowship group, and was influenced by the ministry of Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and reading books such as J. I. Packer’s Fundamentalism and the Word of God, Whitefield’s Journals, Lloyd-Jones’ Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, and J. C. Ryle’s Holiness. At this time he also began to take The Banner of Truth magazine, which he has since served as Associate Editor. He preached for the first time in 1959 and ‘thenceforward Sunday after Sunday’. In 1961 he travelled to the United States to study for three years at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, under men such as Edward J. Young, Ned Stonehouse, John Murray, Cornelius Van Til, Meredith Kline, Norman Shepherd, Jay Adams and Edmund Clowney. Returning to Wales after graduation (M.Div, 1964), he married Iola, ‘the girl back home’. Assured during the last months of his course at seminary of the call to preach, he began his first and only pastorate at Alfred Place the following year. Geoff has systematically preached the Bible to his congregation ever since, and has published the compete text of almost a thousand sermons on the church’s website. He has served as the chairman of the Grace Churches of England and Wales, and of the Association of Evangelical Churches of Wales, and is currently Editor of the Trust’s website articles. On 4 August 1900, the Saturday before a Bank Holiday, a miner from Maerdy, at the head of the Rhondda Fach, decided to take his five-year-old son with him to visit the child's grandparents who still farmed near Brecon. Father and son William and Tommy Jones arrived in the town by train at about six o'clock in the evening. From there they had to walk four miles to reach Cwm Llwch, the little farmhouse deep in the valley to the north of the Beacons owner by Williams parents.Brooke Morris missing: Two years and one day from the missing soldiers the Rivers in the Brecons are being searched in the hunt for 22-year-old rugby player who went missing this weekend 12th October 2019. On June 2nd, 1831, workers in the Welsh town of Merthyr Tydfil marched on the Castle Inn, where local bosses and magistrates were meeting with the High Sheriff of Glamorgan. Workers demanded a reduction in the price of bread and an increase in wages. When their demands were rejected, they attacked the inn, rioted, and took over the town, marching under a red flag. It took the 93rd (Highland) Regiment over a week to restore the status quo. The rebellion later came to be known as the Merthyr Rising.

Probably best known as the War Lord or Mehendri Solon, Madoc also appeared in the second Dalek movie, Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 AD in 1966. Sadly Madoc, born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales passed away at the weekend following a short illness, aged 77. Born in 1934 he had a career stretching over 50 years and was one of the most compelling British character actors of his generation. There is barely a famous TV show from the 1960s and 1970s that he didn't appear in.
