For a hundred years, Sunlight has been a beacon of hope shining across a troubled galaxy, an artificial paradise on a frozen world offering safe haven for the super-rich, and employment for even the poorest of labourers. At least, that's what the adverts say. Unfortunately for Governor Robert Hodan, one of his engineers has just discovered a pair of strange-looking pods lodged in a satellite. So Sunlight, that glittering verdant oasis, will never be the same again. Because, as the Doctor knows only too well, on planets where the Krynoid gets established, the vegetation eats the animals... Episode 1.1 Sunlight by Jonathan Morris Episode 1.2 Sunset by Jonathan S Powell Episode 1.3 Darkness by Chris Chapman Please note: the collector's edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,000 copies Recorded on: 25 and 29 July and 2 August 2024 Recorded at: The Soundhouse Producer Jonathan S Powell said: "Planet Krynoid is Doctor Who's answer to The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, a heart-stopping vision of society's collapse under the weight of one of television's most terrifying creations: the Krynoid. "The Krynoids themselves are terrifying because they do that great sci-fi thing of inverting the ordinary and making you petrified of pot plants. More than that though, they're a sentient infection utterly antithetical to our existence, for which we are woefully unprepared, which makes them the perfect monster to explore today, half a century on from their debut. "I adore The Seeds of Doom - not just for its B-movie brilliance, but for the creeping feeling it evokes that this time, for the first time, the Doctor really might lose. That's what we've tried to convey in this set, that the gloves are off and nobody is safe." Reece Shearsmith said: "I know a lot of actors on Big Finish's roster - David Warner was a great friend, and he used to love doing them and would tell me about them: 'Why haven't you done one?' So I was thrilled to be asked to be in this. It's a really huge drama, it feels a proper disaster movie of the 1970s, like The Poseidon Adventure - things just get worse and worse. "It's a thrill to be part of Doctor Who, it's an institution and it feels like you've made it as an actor if you're asked to be in this world. Hodan is a particular sort of character that Doctor Who is peppered with a lot of – cowards who have a noble intention but trample on people along the way. I've done one before actually, in Mark Gatiss's TV episode Sleep No More. It's a nice thing to play, because it's a very conflicted part." Paul McGann added: "Doctor Who's quite horrible, isn't it, really? When you think about it, it throws up some proper disgusting horrors. Plants that eat people! "The best monsters work on a really visceral, almost childlike level. The Krynoids are like that. Who wants to be eaten by anything, never mind a huge plant?"

It's another episode of Mark Gatiss here on Doctor Who: The Writers' Room. This month, Erik and Kyle look at the two stories Gatiss wrote for Series 7B. First up, "Cold War," the story that reintroduced the Ice Warriors aboard a Russian submarine in 1983. Second, "The Crimson Horror," a penny dreadful riff with the Paternoster Gang and a delicious Diana Rigg performance. Are these maybe Gatiss' best scripts?
Hayley Campbell and Scott Bryan join Naga Munchetty to review the new Netflix show from Lena Dunham, Too Much. Also, acclaimed BBC comedy Such Brave Girls returns for a second series, and we hear the trio's thoughts on new Mark Gatiss crime drama Bookish, on the streaming service U&Drama.

He joins Simon and Mark to talk ‘Bookish'—his new crime comedy passion project that sees him play a bookseller-turned-detective in postwar London. Plenty of whimsy, history, detective-fiction geekery and big love for weird archaic vocabulary in this chat, so don't miss it—he's always a delight. Our Mark reviews the series, as well as the week's big cinema releases. First up, ‘Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness'--a whirlwind imagining of three days in the life of bohemian artist Modigliani, directed by Johnny Depp and (briefly) featuring Al Pacino. And, of course, we'll get the lowdown on the super-size blockbuster of this week: is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's ‘Superman'! We'll also address this week's ‘Salt Path' news, with Mark and Simon reacting to the controversy surrounding the author of the original memoir, Raynor Winn. Since recording, Winn has published her response to the allegations which can be found here: https://www.raynorwinn.co.uk/ Timecodes (for Vanguardistas listening ad-free): Salt Path discussion: 02:36 Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness Review: 11:54 BO10: 18:04 Mark Gatiss Interview: 27:37 Bookish Review: 42:19 Superman Review: 49:59 You can contact the show by emailing correspondence@kermodeandmayo.com or you can find us on social media, @KermodeandMayo Please take our survey and help shape the future of our show: https://www.kermodeandmayo.com/survey EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ https://nordvpn.com/take Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! Like it or not, it's impossible to talk about the Steven Moffat years without discussing the single most ubiquitous other writer of the era, Moffat's longtime collaborator and co-creator of Sherlock, Mark Gatiss. In the first of many episodes about Gatiss' Who output, Kyle and Erik discuss "Victory of the Daleks" and "Night Terrors," one of which might even be better than you think.
Mark Gatiss: actor, writer, producer, director and creator - this is someone who makes Gyles Brandreth look like an under-achiever! From The League of Gentlemen, to Doctor Who, Sherlock and the Christmas Ghost Stories, Mark has been behind some of the most distinctive and original television of recent times. He's also an actor - recently winning awards for his portrayal of Sir John Gielgud in Jack Thorne's The Motive and The Cue. And it goes without saying that he's a fascinating person, with a fascinating story to tell. In this episode, which was recorded live at The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, Mark talks to Gyles about his working class childhood, growing up opposite the local psychiatric hospital. He talks about his hatred of PE lessons, his early obsession with TV and how he became interested in horror. He talks about coming out to his parents and how he met the rest of the League of Gentlemen at drama school. With thanks to the team at The Orange Tree Theatre and to Mark Gatiss for this brilliant interview. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Hosted on Acast. The latest leg of our flight through entirety comes to a gentle landing this week, but before we all head off to collect our luggage, all seven of us take the opportunity to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat in one last retrospective. Notes and links Thank you to those of you who sent us questions: Kate Orman, Doctor What and General Witchfinders. In our discussion of Sleep No More, Brendan reaches for the name of Bethany Black's love interest in the episode, but goes slightly astray. The name he's after is Chopra, played by the astoundingly beautiful Neet Mohan. In Episode 2 of Flight Through Entirety, Richard famously compares Hartnell's performance style to Marlene Dietrich's. This week, he bookends that beautifully with a comparison of Peter Capaldi's style to Maggie Smith's, particularly her Oscar-winning performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Richard alludes to this story from 2015, in which a team consisting of Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss came third in a Doctor Who pub trivia competition at a Doctor Who convention in Sydney. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.com, Brendan is at @retrobrendo.bsky.social, Todd is at @toddbeilby.bsky.social, James is at @ohjamessellwood.bsky.social and Simon is at @simonmoore.bsky.social. Richard is on X at @RichardLStone. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Bluesky, as well as on Mastodon, X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll abandon you for a few years, leaving you with only a couple of Flight Through Entirety-style Doctor Who podcasts to keep you entertained in the meantime. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. Now that Flight Through Entirety is taking a break, you should all go and subscribe to 500 Year Diary, our latest new Doctor Who podcast, in which we go back through the history of the show and examine new themes and ideas. Its first season came out early in 2024, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season, The Second Coming, early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire recently released our hot take on Ncuti Gatwa's second Christmas Special (and Steven Moffat's ninth), Joy to the World. And we'll be back again in 2025 to talk about Season 2. Last week, The Three-Handed Game released their first Christmas Special, discussing the 1966 Avengers episode Too Many Christmas Trees, in which Steed's weird Christmas nightmares start to become reality. The boys will be back in 2025 for the third episode in their triptych The Pop Explosion. Maximum Power is back at last with its long-awaited coverage of the 1981 season of Blakes 7. Last weekend we released our discussion on the season's controversial second episode — Power. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we watched a notoriously silly early episode of Deep Space Nine, the widely reviled but never forgotten Move Along Home. Thank you very much for listening: we'll see you again in a few years. And on all of our other podcasts, of course.
