This week, Matt and I welcome Nichole Vatcher—cohost of the brilliant podcast Nevermind the Music—for a deep dive into Gary Jules' haunting 2001 cover of “Mad World.” Originally a minor hit for a young Tears for Fears, the song took on a whole new life thanks to its stripped-down piano arrangement and its eerie, unforgettable appearance in Donnie Darko. We talk about its emotional weight, how it became a surprise Christmas #1 in the UK, and whether more credit should go to Gary Jules or his collaborator Michael Andrews. We also take a look at the rest of Jules' career and try to determine whether this quietly powerful ballad is thunder… or just rumble in the distance. When illness looms large, where can we find strength and hope? As a sci-fi and horror writer, Michael Andrews faced these questions during his illness. A stirring account of Michael's recovery is featured in our latest episode, where he credits his reborn faith for his recovery. As he recalls his childhood lessons on generosity from his grandparents and the enduring impact of his late father and mentor, he illustrates the importance of mentorship and community in overcoming challenges in life. In exploring the spiritual realm, Michael describes his transformation from a Catholic upbringing to a born-again Christian. He warns listeners about the risks and spiritual implications of engaging in such engagements, confronting the allure of the occult and the troubling evolution of entertainment towards darker themes. His book will explore these spiritual encounters in greater depth, serving as a beacon for those navigating their own paths of faith.Ultimately, the episode ends with a powerful story about perseverance, legacy, and the power of divine healing. Despite his near-death experience in the hospital, Michael shares how his unyielding belief in God kept him alive. This story is a tale of survival and testament to the power of faith and the human spirit. Those intrigued by Michael's journey and writings, such as "Learning to Fly, Surviving COVID-19" and "A Walk Among Shadows," can explore his rich tapestry of stories and reflections online. Join us as we draw from Michael's experience, reminding us all of hope's unshakeable presence and God's healing power in our lives. In 2001, writer/director Richard Kelly's genre-busting rookie feature DONNIE DARKO crashed and burned at the box office. But it almost immediately rose from the ashes to become one of the first cult hits of the 21st century...and it took the music of '80s band Tears for Fears along for the ride.Host Rico Gagliano tells this twisty tale with the help of Kelly, star Jena Malone (THE HUNGER GAMES), and the film's composer Michael Andrews—whose stripped-down cover of Tears's "Mad World" became maybe the most unlikely smash hit in UK history. To celebrate our new season of the podcast, we're partnering with the American Cinematheque to present a double feature of DONNIE DARKO and THE EVIL DEAD on Sunday April 9th at Santa Monica's Aero Theatre. Rico Gagliano and Richard Kelly will attend for an in-person discussion. For more details, check out the American Cinematheque's website here. The third season of the MUBI Podcast, titled “Needle on the Record,” dives into the unifying power of movie music and tells the stories behind some of cinema's most renowned “needle drops”—moments where filmmakers deployed pre-existing music instead of an original score. When it comes to healthy communication and conflict resolution, we believe there is one vital ingredient - EMPATHY! This is a skill that every leader needs to develop and yet, it's one of the hardest to integrate into our everyday lives. If you are looking for some practical ways to grow your empathy IQ, this episode is for you. Michael Andrews shares his wisdom and insight about the power of empathy and the impact it has on those we lead. Michael has taught and preached in a number of churches across the country over the past 30 years. He retired as an engineer from the telecommunications industry, after directing several research and development projects. In addition to his degrees in electrical engineering, Michael has a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from Duke University Divinity School. Dr. Michael Andrews is an electrical engineer turned minister and teacher! He's also the author of The Influential Christian: Learning to Lead from the Heart. This episode feels like the perfect place to pick up just after Easter but is also a timeless message for anyone who is trying to press into what it means to live a life on purpose for Christ. What does it really mean to be an “influencer?” This is literally a job description these days. And as Mike points out this can take the form of marketing but is also something that is happening on a heart level constantly as we live as human beings. We are constantly being influenced by something or someone, and in turn, we are always influencing others. What is leading that? Are we being manipulative or do we genuinely want to point others to Christ and experience deep, eternal life change? Mike shares with us how empathy is the key to connecting with people and calling them into a deeper relationship with Christ, and how it must be at the root of the influence we hold in all the various parts of our life. You can have all the best tools and resources at your disposable, but if you don't care for your heart and work through how you connect with others, it won't create a lasting impart. This carries into the workplace, how we parent, and so much more. Empathy is a cultivated characteristic because we are by nature we are more self-centered. So as we embrace the call to be disciples, to be Jesus' witnesses from where we live until the ends of the earth, we must press into how we engage others. We have to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and strength before we can love our neighbor. Mike is going to guide us through some intentional examination here, suggest practical application steps to for growth, and so much more all in this episode and I cannot wait for you to hear it.
