Dan Gillmor, co-founder of Arizona State's News Co/Lab, is an expert on civil literacy and the role of journalism in our changing world. He joins the show to discuss the many changes to journalistic norms in the past few years and how to navigate a path forward. How should journalists cover politicians who intentionally and, sometimes dangerously, lie without consequence? What do former guardians of truth and once-trusted establishments still do their job when they're dismissed summarily by significant portions of the populace? And why was it so hard for journalists to just say, "Trump lied," instead of, as Dan says, using every other word in the thesaurus? This week we again spend some time talking with long-time technology journalist and journalism professor, Dan Gillmor. Last week Dan gave us some insight into the state of technology journalism, while this week Dan gives us some advice on how to begin covering technology and what journalists should look out for. How To Cover Money is a weekly podcast from the Reynolds National Center For Business Journalism at Arizona State University. Reynolds Director Micheline Maynard and co-host Mark Remillard of KTAR News in Phoenix offer tips on ways to find the money in any story, even if you aren't a business journalist.
This week we spend some time talking with long-time technology journalist and journalism professor, Dan Gillmor. We're splitting our conversation with Dan into two episodes with this week looking at the state of technology journalism, and then next week we'll dive into tips and advice on covering the industry.
It is a foregone conclusion in media circles that journalism as we know it is, or soon will be, kaput. As the huge machine that is 20th Century journalism is dismantled, long before the vultures get a chance to pick at the bones of the last remaining printing press, a class of media creators, critics, and consumers are getting a chance to look over the damage and see what is worth preserving, what is worth building upon, and what is worth throwing away. Dan Gillmor, director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is one of those multi-hyphenate creator/critic/consumers. In a recent submission for the Media Re:Public series, Dan suggested a vision for a participatory media, including five principles that could guide journalism in the 21st Century.
