There are many rich images used to depict the nature of the Church in the New Testament. The Body of Christ, the Salt of the Earth, etc... One scholar notes as many as 96 of them! Part of the picture this gives us is that the church is so glorious, and the wonderful truths about it are so myriad, that it requires many different images to draw out all of its beauty. Sort of like the way in which the luster of a diamond is drawn out when examined from different angles and in different lighting. In Ephesians 2:19-22, the Apostle Paul gives 3 different images of what the Church is.The Church is the Citizenry of the Kingdom of HeavenThe Church is the Family of GodThe Church is the Temple of GodIn contrast to the low opinions that many people in the world today have of the Church of Jesus Christ, these images draw out remarkable truths about the Church. One of these glorious truths is that the Church is essentially a manifestation of heaven on earth! Now that's a remarkable thought! Members of the true Church (all genuine Christians) are people who are citizens and ambassadors of the Kingdom of Heaven. Not only so, but all true local churches are also like embassies or outposts of the Kingdom of Heaven. They are the place where the values, the power, and the authority of the Kingdom of Heaven show up on the earth.Furthermore, to say that the Church is the temple of God, is to say that it is in the Church where God is most uniquely present. It is in the Church where God dwells and where his presence is to be sought!Listen to this episode to hear more about the implications of these great truths. This episode was originally a sermon given by Jackson Hankey at River City Church on Thursday, Aug. 14th, 2025.

In our Season 4 premiere, we sit down with Dr. Jay Sexton, Director of the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democrazy at Mizzou. As we explore the theme of "Civics and Citizenry" throughout this year, Dr. Sexton will guide us through defining some of the ideas and terms we'll encounter this year and set the stage to help us better understand the role of civics in our daily lives, how they connect to the humanities, and why this conversation is necessary now more than ever.
Regardless of what side of the aisle you sit on politically, I think we can all agree it's important to be as educated in civics as we can be. Fortunately there is a non-profit called the Michigan Center for Civic Education working tirelessly to create an informed citizenry here in Michigan. Joining Chris to share some details of their work is the Director of Outreach at the State Bar of Michigan and Board Member of the MCCE, Darin Day!
Imagine a world where communities thrive because individuals are guided by virtue—where kindness, empathy, and integrity shape the culture. This idea, rooted in the philosophy of virtuous citizenry, reminds us that being a good citizen goes beyond following laws; it's about living with purpose and contributing to a collective good. Creating such cultures begins with each of us: fostering respect, cultivating honesty, and showing up for one another. It's in our daily acts of care that we build the foundation for vibrant, connected communities. Together, we can reimagine what it means to lead with virtue—crafting a legacy that inspires others to do the same. What small act of virtue will you bring to your community today?

What are our expectations for rules of engagement in building a healthy democracy? What shared commitments can we make in our civic aspirations? At the heart of answers to these questions is the issue of pluralism, which was one of the founding creeds of the United States for helping to live peaceably and with civility despite deeply engrained differences. John Inazu, professor of law and religion at Washington University, and author of the book, Confident Pluralism: Surviving and Thriving through Deep Difference, is back on the podcast to discuss pluralism and ways to foster persuasion rather than coercion for a pluralistic society.Show notes and a full transcript are available.

Tom welcomes back Steve Hanke Professor of Applied Economics - Johns Hopkins University. In this discussion, Professor Steve Hanke emphasizes the potential benefits of dollarization for Argentina's economy. He references the country's history of economic instability, multiple currency and banking crises, and high inflation rates. Hanke suggests that dollarization, similar to the strategies implemented in Ecuador and El Salvador, could lead to a significant reduction in inflation and increase access to long-term credit. He also highlights the success of dollarization in countries like Panama and Hong Kong. Hanke argues that dollarization would align Argentina more closely with the United States, making its currency more secure and convertible. He points out that the stability brought by dollarization would create greater opportunities for the demand of Argentinian goods, particularly in the agricultural sector. He also states that dollarization simplifies borrowing and stabilizes foreign exchange, which benefits the circulation of the US dollar. However, Hanke acknowledges that a reserve would be needed for small change and suggests that it should be backed at a one-to-one rate with US dollars. He dismisses the idea of using gold or Bitcoin as unnecessary especially with a population already highly reliant on U.S. Dollar Notes. Hanke also addresses the political challenges of dollarization, mentioning that the concept may face opposition from the political class who would lose the ability to borrow money from a central bank. Additionally, he highlights the disproportionate impact of the inflation tax on lower-income individuals, underscoring the importance of maintaining a strong budget. Overall, Hanke asserts that dollarization can bring stability, reduce inflation, and create economic opportunities for Argentina. He believes that adopting the US dollar would help mitigate the country's past economic challenges and align it more closely with economically successful nations. Steve Hankey suggested dollarization as a viable solution which would likely cause inflation to plummet and long-term credit to become accessible. A dollarized system would create a 'confidence shock' and benefit those on lower incomes by reducing the impact of the inflation tax.
