The Department of Education has launched civil rights investigations into five states that have laws banning mask mandates. The states are Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah. In Florida, which is not on the list, the education commissioner has announced the state will withhold funding from Broward County and Alachua County Public Schools because their school mask mandates do not have a non-medical opt-out. At a school board meeting in Lee County on masks last night, some in the crowd accused the school board of being “Marxist communist tyrants” who “support child sex trafficking.”

Pfizer/BioNTech are using preliminary Phase 1 data to start the process of asking the FDA to evaluate a third booster dose. That Phase 1 data found that people given a 3rd shot 8-9 months after their primary doses had a boosted immune response, and higher neutralizing antibody levels against the Delta variant compared to people who received the original 2 doses. The FDA and CDC are still not recommending booster doses for all. It's not clear when or if the agencies might recommend booster doses. The companies are suggesting that giving a booster dose from six to 12 months after the initial vaccination will help maintain a high level of protection.

The FDA is planning to authorize a third shot for the immune-compromised as soon as today. If the FDA green-lights the additional shots it's up to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the Centers for Disease Control's expert advisory panel, to make its own recommendation on who should get the shot and what factors they might want to consider. Those recommendations are typically adopted by the CDC as nationwide public health guidance. The ACIP is scheduled to meet on Friday, though it is not currently scheduled to vote. Dr. Anthony Fauci said this morning that the third shot would specifically be for those who have compromised immune systems and battling advanced illnesses initially, but that eventually the general population might need that third booster shot, but said that the research is being done to study the long-term vaccine efficacy in people.
