While the child sleeps, Daenerys bathes and is visited by Quaithe who tells her to trust nobody: The kraken and the dark flame, the lion and the griffin, the mummer's dragon, the sun's son, and the performed seneschal.In the morning, Hizdahr zo Loraq again argues for the fighting pits to be reopened, bringing freed slaves who made their name and living there as witnesses. Daenerys is more swayed than previously. After a discussion with Ser Barristan, she visits Rhaegel and Viserion who are chained up for Drogon's crimes. Jorah the explorer and Gendry comeback and join Davos and Jon Snow on a mission beyond the Wall along with Tormund, The Hound, and the Brotherhood Without Banners. to retrieve a white walker. Daenerys has taken Meereen, but Astapor and Yunkai are backsliding. She forgives Barristan Selmy for his failures to protect her family, but banishes Jorah Mormont from her sight. She'll stay in Meereen and rule. Mackelly and Simon settle in to watch some dragons grow.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys Meereen from the great pyramid. She's bothered by flies who've gathered to feast on the many dead, including the 163 she crucified as payment for what they did to the slave children.She meets an envoy from Astapor. The council she appointed have all lost their heads, literally, and a former (and apparently current) butcher Cleon, has made himself King. He offers his hand in marriage. Dany is distinctly disinterested. The second petitioner is a Qartheen trader. He has goods he wants to trade for slaves. He's surely barking up the wrong tree. Only Daario Naharis confirms that many freed slaves are down at the docks offering to reenter slavery. Dany begrudgingly allows it and imposes a tax on the trade to swell her own coffers.Next she sees Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont. The former gives it to her straight. Her father was mad, Viserys had the hallmarks too. Robert Baratheon was a great knight, and could have been a good king. She appreciates the candor and reinstates him to her service. Mormont tries a similar tack. He spied for Varys for a pardon, as recently as Qarth. But this is too much for Dany. Daenerys buys the Unsullied army that she needs but pays a huge cost. Not only the three ships and all their contents, but also her dragon Drogon. However, she has a nasty surprise in store for the slavers. Simon and Mackelly consider the economic crimes that pave Daenerys' path to the Iron Throne.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen is willing to pay any price to get her Unsullied slave army. Ultimately, she and the masters of Astapor agree upon the sum: the three ships she sailed into Slaver's Bay on, all of their contents, and… Drogon. Arstan Whitebeard pleads with Dany not to agree to that last bit, but she has him removed from her presence. In return, Dany gets all 8,600 fully-trained Unsullied, along with the partially trained, the recently-cut boys, and the translator slave named Missandei. That night, on board her ship Balerion, she has a vision of Quaithe repeating the riddle she told Dany in Qarth. The next morning she rides to the meeting place among her meager force, including all three dragons. She hands the chain attached to Drogon's neck to Kraznys mo Nakloz and receives the ceremonial whip indicating she now has control over the Unsullied. While Kraznys and the other masters struggle controlling Drogon, Dany rides past the Unsullied shouting to them in High Valyrian that she now owns them and they'll do as she says.She turns back to Drogon and shouts "Dracarys." The dragon bathes Krasnys in flame. The other two dragons are released and all three begin pouring fire down on the Astapori elite in attendance. She commands the Unsullied to kill anyone wearing a tokar, free all slaves, but leave any children unharmed. We've arrived. Not quite to the finale, but only one more week of Talkin' Thrones before we wrap up the legacy of Game of Thrones and officially determine whether the problems of this final season were enough to torch the legacy. The Long Night wrapped up the army of the dead, and then the Last of the Starks set up a seasons worth of conflict that then had to be resolved in 2 episodes. And we arrive at arguably the most problematic, hated and confusingly executed episodes in the show's history, the penultimate episode of the entire show, "The Bells." And when I say confusingly executed, I mean I don't think there's ever been an episode of a television show that was so well executed, so clear with its story and had some of the best onscreen destruction and carnage scenes of the entire show, almost to the point where it elicits a traumatizing reaction, but feels so out of place in the story of Thrones, such a betrayal of so many of the characters we've spent all this time with. We have characters flipping on each other, making last minute decisions, some of which feel earned, some of which makes absolutely no sense. With both her dragon and Missandei dead, Daenerys has every intention of burning King's Landing to the ground and Cersei knows this, herding the citizens of King's Landing into the city to use as a shield. Varys attempts to do what he can to ensure this doesn't happen, attempting to poison Daenerys and appealing to Jon to take his rightful place as the king, but is instead ratted out by Tyrion and burned alive. Then the attack commences, Tyrion frees Jaime to save Cersei before she dies in the attack, Daenerys' army quickly takes the city, destroys the Iron Fleet and the scorpions, before the battle turns to a slaughter as Daenerys turns Drogon on the city and begins burning it to the ground, resulting in one of the most gruesome action sequences the show has ever put to the screen as they proceed to murder every single citizen in the city. Bunch of bodies hit the floor, as we bid goodbye to Varys, the Hound, the Mountain, Qyburn, Euron Greyjoy, Cersei & Jaime. It all ends...next week. With the vastly shortened season, we hit the midpoint a lot sooner than I thought, and boy is it a doozy. Building off the monumental events of last weeks episode, "The Spoils of War" is an interesting case, because its the next in a line of steps that Benioff & Weiss were taking to further the pacing of the show than they ever had before, with the next stage in the war for Westeros occuring when Daenerys hears of the fall of Highgarden, which leads her riding Drogon to overpower Jaime Lannister's forces with a Dothraki horde, as a show of what she is truly capable of if she were to focus all her power on taking Westeros. It's an interesting perspective they take, presenting Daenerys on the offensive front and keeping the battle focused from Jaime's perspective, showing what perceived power versus real power really looks like. The Starks are also officially reunited with Arya returning to Winterfell, reuniting with Sansa & Bran, sparring with Brienne and causing Littlefinger more anguish. Jon also attempts to further convince Daenerys of the threat from the North, but to no avail, and is unexpectedly reunited with Theon. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King's Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it's not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something's not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who've saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis' loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They'll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis' goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they'll march to Pentos.Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden. Simon and Mackelly get out the marshmallows.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen is not getting what she wants from the citizens of Qarth, so she's going to try Pyatt Pree and the warlocks of the House of the Undying. None of her friends like the plan. Pree gives her advice for getting to the Undying Ones, once within, and she heads inside.She has multiple visions, of her father, her brother, her other brother, and other strange imagery. None of it is terribly helpful to either her, nor the sleuthy reader. She finally meets the Undying. They are spectral husks who have no wisdom to offer, beyond riddles and are determined to imprison her.Drogon, who's come along for just such an eventuality, sets fire to the Undying and the great heart that appears to be their life-force. Dany oversees preparation for Drogo's funeral pyre. In addition to a bit of wood, and a lot of oil, she adds to the kindling the Khal's various treasures, Mirri Maz Duur, another dead horse, all three of her priceless dragon eggs, and eventually herself. She (well, she is the last dragon) survives and the three eggs hatch into dragons. Seriously: dragons. The boys don their oven-gloves and pay homage. Chapter Review: Dany orders the khalasar to gather enough wood to create a fire for Drogo's funeral. They liberally splash it with oil to aid the burn. Dany reassures Ser Jorah that she does not intend to die tonight. She adds the eggs to the fire, to his consternation - selling one of those bad-boys could fund their retirement! She frees the slaves, gives gifts to her khas - who disavow her brazenly to her face, and has Mirri chained to the bonfire for her sins. Mirri believes that Dany is trying some amateur blood magic of her own (she could hardly do it worse than the professionals). As the fire is lit everyone backs off, but Dany. The last Targaryen is drawn to the flames even as her clothes and hair are burned away. The pyre collapses and she is lost from view. Hours later, when the fire has cooled enough, Jorah and the rest of the khalasar approach to find Daenerys Stormborn suckling her three new babies. Dragons... God bless Bran, Drogon will be fine, and Sansa is still bae

Thrones is almost at an end, and the most recent installment, "The Bells," felt more like a cinematic blockbuster to Andrew and Manu than an episode of television. There are definite positives to that in terms of directing, set design, cinematography, and more! Unfortunately, we also get some questionable storytelling choices, resulting in huge moments like Dany's heel turn on the innocents of King's Landing feeling rushed. But between that, the Jaime/Cersei storyline, Cleganebowl, Arya's wanderings, and the last stand of Varys, there's so much to talk about! Next week's finale will be something to behold. In "Eastwatch," Jon assembles his Magnificent Seven Dream Team and bonds with Drogon, Tyrion hatches a crazy-ass plan, Gendry returns, Jaime suffers wayward travels and sibling troubles, Gilly makes a stunning discovery in Oldtown, Sam's frustrations with the maesters mirror real-world comparisons, and Sansa and Arya have a disconcerting spat. Game of Thrones never fails to have an eventful episode 9 and season 6's The Battle of the Bastards was no exception. On this week's The Cast Beyond the Wall, Daniel, Austin, and myself break down the highly anticipated battle sequence and whether or not it lives up to some of the other series climactic battles. Jon Snow has seen white walkers at Hardhome, defended the Wall outmatched a hundred to one, and even been brought back from the dead, but that doesn't make him any less a Stark. Leading up to the Battle, Jon scrapes together a strategy and ignores Sansa's advice not to go into battle. Sansa on the other hand continues to withhold the crucial info about Petyr Baelish's armies from the Eerie. Have Ramsey and Littlefinger compromised the elder Stark or was this just a rookie mistake? Despite the title of the episode, this week also featured the biggest set piece we've ever seen in Mereen. Danerys rides Drogon and decimates entire ships from The Masters' fleet while Dario leads a full fledged ground assault with the Dothraki horde. Following the flawless victory, Theon and Yara Greyjoy arrive and request independence for the Iron Islands if they support her claim. We take a moment to discuss the issues with the season's continued abbreviation, particularly as it relates to Mereen. Has Dany's time to cross the Narrow Sea FINALLY come? For the sake of my sanity, let's hope so. The Battle of the Bastards may contain not just one, but two of the finest action set pieces the series has ever seen, but I make the case that it lacks the magical secret sauce that makes Game of Thrones special. Austin and Daniel on the other hand were enamored by the undeniably impressive spectacle.

Just when you didn't think Game of Thrones could get any better than a white walker army, we get Daenerys Targarian mounting Drogon to round out an epic battle in the Merenese arena. The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to talk about the rise of Daenerys Targaryen and the fall of Stannis Baratheon in this week's episode, The Dance of Dragons. The Sons of the Harpy finally made another move against Daenerys as they upended the tournament in the fighting pits and began killing everyone including the despised Hizdahr zo Loraq. After being banished twice and killing a few men in the process, it looks like Jorah has finally won back Dany trust after chucking the so called spear of destiny one of her assassins. Arya's storyline continues to crawl to a climax as she has a run in with Meryn Trant when he arrives in Braavos with Mace Tyrell. Her season arc has been promising, but is really lacking the progress or urgency of some of her past story lines. Daniel and I get into a heated discussion whether or not we've like the slower pace. Dorne continues to be one of the absolute worst side treks in the history of the show and we spend a few minutes trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with our favorite Lannister/Bronn pairing. After a season of building our trust by aligning himself with Jon Snow and promising justice in the North, Stannis finally crossed the point of no return when he decided to burn his daughter. We've never been the biggest Stannis the Mannis fans on the podcast, but we discuss the high hopes we had for him before took a nosedive into desperation.  This was an episode of the highest of highs and lowest of lows and we try to lay our final verdict on the seasons infamous episode 9.
