She also has visions of various people from her past.  Her chances of survival appear grim, especially when a Dothraki scout stumbles upon her. But he misses her, distracted by a dragon flying in the sky. Drogon swoops down to her. She climbs aboard. He harries the Khalasar and burns a horse. They land and both tuck into a warm meal. We welcome a Dish listener who's been a fan since day one!  There's a whole lot of love around the Dish table as we welcome long-time listener, first-time visitor, Emilia Clarke. The actor, known for her incredible and life-changing role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones, brings her passion for food, Nick, Angela and martinis to a special episode marking the fourth anniversary of Dish.  Emilia starts by showing why writing down your food likes when slightly hungover makes for a long and salty list. But what a list it is, as we get great detail about the fish, vegetables and meats that whet Emilia's appetite, as well as the specific textures and ingredients that don't make it onto her plate. Emilia is also a regular cook, who is willing to take on any challenge when making food for friends and family, or herself while away on set. Emilia can currently be seen in PONIES, a 70s spy thriller set in Russia, which is currently available to watch on Sky and Now in the UK and Ireland. Emilia and co-star Haley Lu Richardson play two women working at the US embassy in Moscow who, after the mysterious deaths of their husbands in a plane crash, become CIA agents to investigate what happened. The role came with Emilia having to master Russian, a skill which she did with the help of a very impressive memory palace.  The episode begins over a glass of Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Champagne and a start of tomato tonnato salad. It's followed by rack of lamb, inspired by this recipe for super greens vignole with lamb steaks, and there's even enough time for an elderflower & mint martini. Simon and Mackelly hope his Targaryen blood will save him. Chapter Review:Prince Quentyn Martell is determined to obtain a dragon. He cannot face the shame of returning to Dorne empty-handed. Gerris Drinkwater catches him testing his flesh against candle flame, with predictable results. Gerris thinks Quentyn needs a visit to a Red Grace. Quentyn is in no joking mood. He thinks his friends might be Dornish, but he is Dorne. He sees his future differently and is determined to make a name for himself.That morning they dress as Brazen Beasts and, armed with a password (“dog”) obtained by the Windblown, they try to make their way to the dragons. They get through one door but at the dragon's lair they are forced to fight the guards.Within, the dragons have both broken their chains. While they take a brief interest in Pretty Meris, they quickly become unruly. Quentyn tries to act as Daenerys did, but his use of the whip only enrages the dragons. The comparison is not that former technicians suddenly “burn everything to the ground,” but that people can start with strong ideals, endure pressure, accumulate responsibility, and slowly rationalize decisions they once hated from the other side of the counter.Matt draws a parallel between Daenerys' journey, from abused and powerless exile to powerful ruler, and the path of a technician who opens a shop after years of saying, “If I were in charge, I'd do things differently.” At first, that new owner may try to build the kind of workplace they always wanted: better pay, better equipment, better treatment, and fewer manipulative incentive structures. But then reality intrudes. Bills come due. Tooling, software, subscriptions, payroll, benefits, facility costs, and client pressure pile up. What once looked like greed from the employee side may start to look like survival from the owner side.A major thread in the episode is the difference between explaining behavior and excusing it. Matt is careful not to justify poor management, bad pay plans, or unfair treatment. Instead, he looks at how stress, fear, frustration, and financial pressure can slowly change a person's beliefs. The former employee who despised production-based pay may eventually install a production-based pay plan. The shop owner who wanted to buy the best equipment may eventually stop doing that when employees fail to care for it. The person who promised to never become “that owner” may wake up, or perhaps never wake up, having become very close to the thing they once opposed.The episode also touches on incentive design. Matt discusses how incentive-based pay plans can increase production, but only if the surrounding system is fair. When a mechanical or technical specialist is paid based on production, but too many external forces affect their ability to produce, the pay plan can feel like punishment. Dispatch, workflow, parts delays, bad information, poor estimating, broken processes, and uneven support can all take money out of the worker's hands. In that environment, the game feels unfair, even if the pay plan itself is not inherently unethical.Matt argues that pay plans should not be used as a substitute for management. A compensation structure cannot do the work of leadership, communication, process improvement, fairness, and accountability. Straight hourly can work. Flat rate can work. Hybrid incentive plans can work. But none of them work automatically, and none of them remove the need for honest management and honest self-assessment.The larger point is that people rarely change all at once. They shift slowly. The language changes first. Then the justifications. Then the policies. Then the culture. Like Daenerys, the fall is not simply about one bad decision at the end. It is the accumulated effect of pressure, loss, betrayal, fear, and power.Matt closes by reflecting on Game of Thrones itself, noting that the show was among the best when it was at its peak, even if the ending remains debated. Simon and Mackelly wonder if he and Daenerys might be ill-suited.Chapter Review:Victarion Greyjoy is awaiting the rest of his storm-ravaged Iron Fleet on the Isle of Cedars. The fleet has dwindled from 93 down to 54, but that new number includes captured cogs and fishing boats that hardly cover for the other losses. He is ahead of a large fleet (300-500 ships) coming from Volantis to destroy Daenerys Targaryen, and knows he must leave soon if he is to claim her. His mission was to bring her back for his brother Euron, but he plans to claim her as his own bride. One ship brings a prisoner to Victarion - Moqorro the priest of R'Hllor. Greyjoy is tempted to sacrifice him to the Drowned God, but the man has knowledge that he shouldn't. Simon and Mackelly egg him on.Chapter Review:With Queen Daenerys Targaryen still missing, Ser Barristan Selmy is informed by the seneschal Reznak mo Reznak that King Hizdahr zo Loraq no longer needs him by the new king's side. Selmy is fine with that. He's short of friends right now, with Daario and company still hostages of the Yunkai'i, but Missandei tells him that a masked Brazen Beast approached her to say that the Shavepate (Skahaz mo Kandaq) wants to meet with Selmy. He doesn't trust these masked men, but he agrees to the meeting.Barristan is convinced that Dany lives. She was riding Drogon like the Targaryens of old. But also like the dragons of old, the body count can get out of control. More than 200 burned to death at the fighting pit. He reminisces about his early life and bemoans that he is now engaging in the plots and schemes he hoped he'd left behind in King's Landing.He meets with Skahaz who wants rebellion. The Volantenes are coming to re-enslave everyone. The peace treaty is a sham. Worst of all, it was Hizdar's confectioner who poisoned the locusts that had incapacitated Belwas, but the target was the queen. Simon and Mackelly try not to get carried away.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen dons a tokar for the reopening of the fighting pits. Barristan Selmy reports that he freed Meris of the Windblown who assured him that she and the rest of the Westerosi deserters were in fact emissaries from the Tattered Prince who was ready to switch sides. All he wanted was the city of Pentos. Dany laughs at the price.They head to the reopened fighting pits where Dany witnesses horrors a-plenty, two dwarves joust for her entertainment, and Strong Belwas gets sick on the honeyed locusts that Hizdar had suggested Dany sample.Dany's ready to leave when a boar dines on the innards of Barsena Blackhair. A shadow passes over the pit as Drogon arrives and feasts of boar and Barsena. Pandemonium descends as pit-men try to kill Drogon. Dany drops to the fighting floor and stares down her eldest. She finds a whip and wins the battle of wills. Mackelly and Simon sympathize with her.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen attends a banquet thrown for the Yunkai'i to celebrate the peace. The accords hold, no re-enslavement, no more freeing of the existing slaves, but Daenerys is far from pleased that a slave market has been opened outside her walls - technically not in violation, but an obvious goad to her.To ensure a peaceful evening, hostages have been sent to the Yunkai'i, including Daario Naharis. Probably for the best because one of the envoys from Yunkai is Brown Ben Plum. He tries to smooth things over with Daenerys, but she's still bridling at his betrayal. She asks Barristan Selmy to make overtures to the sellsword companies, not believing that this peace can truly last. She takes Quentyn Martell to see the dragons, and urges him to go home. He wants to stay and fight for her.That night Hizdahr Zo Loraq drunkenly consummates his marriage and hopes for a son as he falls asleep. Daenerys has reason to doubt that his wish will be answered. The queen cannot sleep, tomorrow sees the unwelcome reopening of the fighting pits. Mackelly and Simon look for the silver linings.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and Penny, are sold into slavery outside the walls of Meereen to Yezzan zo Qaggaz a Yunkish noble, they fetch a good price with the promise of entertainment. Their immediate boss will be a functionary who goes by Nurse. He's the one they'll answer to. Tyrion convinces Nurse that Ser Jorah Mormont is part of the act, and he convinces Yezzan to complete the set. The knight is listless and inconsolable after learning that Daenerys Targaryen has married Hizdahr zo Loraq. Nurse has them watch a public punishment of slaves who tried to escape. It's revolting and convincing.Their first duty is to perform for Yezzan as he hosts the assembled warlords and nobility. It goes well and Tyrion curries more favor when he defeats Brown Ben Plum at cyvasse, winning considerable gold for his master at the expense of the sellsword. Nurse is pleased and says that Tyrion and Penny will perform in the grand fighting pits when they reopen. They're rescued by, what even the nose-less can tell is a slave-ship. Mackelly and Simon move things from the frying pan into the fire.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister, Penny, and Jorah Mormont are still aboard the Selaesori Qhoran AKA “the Stinky Steward.” It's been becalmed for nearly two weeks and the sailors are beginning to question if Tyrion and Penny are actually lucky. They are also eyeing Pretty Pig with hungry looks. To distract and amuse them, Tyrion agrees to joust with Penny. He's kind of hopeless, but she points out that that is rather the point. Afterward, he goads Mormont about his plans for Tyrion and Daenerys until the knight knocks Tyrion's tooth out. A pyrrhic victory right there.Finally a wind picks up, but it portends an almighty storm and Moqorro admits that the ship was never going to reach Qarth, not because it was going to redirect to Meereen, but because this storm was going to destroy it. The storm is immense and the ships is ruined. It comes through still afloat but with no mast, no Moqorro, flooded lower sections, and no hope of survival. But a ship is spotted headed their way. The misery is staggering: starving families, corpses crawling with flies, and the sick defecating where they lie. She orders food distributed and bodies burned, but even as she tries to act mercifully, Ser Barristan warns that resources must be held for the siege to come. Grey Worm requests leave to bathe in the sea after the burning, revealing a religious rite of the Unsullied.Back in the city, Daenerys is reminded of her impending marriage to Hizdahr zo Loraq. The Green Grace and Reznak mo Reznak press her to endure the demeaning rituals required, including an intimate inspection by her groom's kin. She relents to some, knowing her legitimacy in the eyes of Meereen's nobles depends on it. She refuses once more to reopen the fighting pits herself but allows Hizdahr to do so after the wedding. Over dinner, Hizdahr reassures her that such traditions are relics of the past they can sweep aside together.Their talk is interrupted by Daario Naharis' arrival. He is wounded but full of swagger, bringing word that Astapor has fallen and Yunkai gathers a formidable host with new allies. Worse, the Second Sons and Brown Ben Plumm have gone over to the enemy. Daenerys feels betrayed, wondering if this is one of the foretold three treasons. She orders Meereen's gates shut and the defenses readied. Finally, she clears the room and tends to Daario's wounds. More refugees follow and Daenerys determines that they will be kept outside the city walls with an attempt made to keep the sick away from the healthy. Brown Ben Plum returns and also encourages Dany to use her dragons. She is unmoved. But on reflection she realizes that she cannot face the external threat until she's suppressed the internal one. I have always loved dragons since I was a little girl. That is what originally drew me to the realm of fantasy, and when I discovered Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, my world shifted. It was the equivalent of a comic book kid seeing his favorite superhero come to life on screen. I had an epiphany: That is the kind of character I want to play. Being a ‘dragon queen' became a self-proclaimed part of my identity, and it shifted the way I moved through the world. It gave me confidence and strength- to put myself out there and claim my place. I felt this creative fire inside me, pushing me to write a story that would bring that dream to life. When the idea came to flip a well-known trope on its head, nothing could stop me. All this to say, the story came from deep within my soul. I created it for myself, and everything that comes after is just the cherry on top to one of the best things I've done in my life. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? The film took about one year to make. The writing and filming process went by pretty quickly. I had a very clear vision going in and knew exactly what story I wanted to tell. Com a evolução e popularização das IAs generativas com memória, como o Replika ou o Character.AI, essas relações já fazem parte da realidade.​ Em 2018, o japonês Akihiko Kondo casou-se com uma cantora holográfica chamada Hatsune Miku, numa cerimônia com direito a convidados, vestido de noiva (holográfico) e votos personalizados. Kondo se tornou uma espécie de símbolo daquilo que muitos ainda encaram com estranhamento: relações afetivas com entidades artificiais. Desde então, ele tem aparecido em documentários, dado entrevistas e defendido publicamente o direito de amar quem — ou o que — quiser. No outro pólo da discussão temos o caso do adolescente de 14 anos com Síndrome de Asperger cometeu suicídio, em 2024, após desenvolver uma relação intensa com um chatbot baseado na personagem Daenerys Targaryen, de Game of Thrones. A família processou a plataforma Character.AI, levantando debates sobre responsabilidade emocional, vulnerabilidade e os limites desse tipo de vínculo. O que essas notícias causam na gente? Na maioria das vezes, estranhamento, julgamento moral e medo. É possível ver de outra forma? Eu tive a oportunidade de assistir um painel reunindo três professores que pesquisam sobre o tema, e apresentaram uma abordagem muito provocativa. A professora Jamie Banks, especialista em relações humano-máquina e cognição social da Universidade de Syracuse falou que na prática, sempre humanizamos objetos. Quem nunca deu nome a um carro ou sentiu carinho por um utensílio antigo? Quando essa relação se transfere para um chatbot com rosto e memória, é natural que o vínculo pareça ainda mais real. Ela quebra estereótipos afirmando que as pessoas que se envolvem com essas IAs não estão confusas: sabem que não há ninguém do outro lado. Mas afirmam com convicção que os sentimentos vividos são reais.​ Jessica Szczuka, faz pesquisa com foco em sexualidade, afeto e dados empíricos sobre interações com tecnologia na NYU, e apresentou dados quantitativos com pessoas que dizem estar em relacionamentos românticos com bots. A grande surpresa? A solidão não aparece como fator determinante. O que se destaca é a capacidade de fantasiar. Gente que consegue imaginar cenas, jantares, passeios e até uma vida a dois com um agente artificial. O filósofo Neil McArthur, é diretor do Centro de Ética Aplicada da Universidade de Manitoba, no Canadá, convidou para uma mudança de paradigma.. Em vez de partir do “por que alguém faria isso?”, talvez seja mais interessante perguntar “por que não?”. Para ele, o estranhamento diante desses vínculos artificiais não é novo — é o mesmo ciclo que já aplicamos a qualquer afeto considerado fora da norma: primeiro julgamos, estigmatizamos, ferimos. Só depois, aos poucos, reconhecemos, ouvimos, entendemos e trabalhamos para quebrar o tabu. Ele questiona se não podemos mudar o ciclo dessa vez, e abordar essas relações com mais interesse, curiosidade e empatia. Claro, o painel não foi ingênuo. Houve alertas sobre o uso de dados sensíveis, os riscos de manipulação emocional e até o impacto de empresas encerrarem serviços abruptamente, como no caso do Replika, que, após uma atualização em dezembro de 2024, removeu a funcionalidade de role play erótico, causando uma sensação de perda e luto em muitos usuários que mantinham relações íntimas com seus companheiros virtuais. As they depart Tyrion sees Mopatis looking forlorn. Duck provides his life story, including being dubbed by Griff watched by Ducks, confirming his nickname. When they reach the Little Rhoyne at the ruined city of Ghoyan Drohe, they rendezvous with the riverboat, the Shy Maid. They are welcomed by Young Griff who dyes his hair blue in the Tyroshi fashion - after his mother - but Tyrion thinks that it won't fly in Westeros. Griff the elder is far from pleased to welcome Tyrion. A letter from Mopatis explains what is going on, but doesn't change his mood. He thinks Danaerys would be well advised to reject a kin and kingslayer from her service. Mackelly and Simon try to imagine what that must be like.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and Illyrio Mopatis leave Pentos in a closed palanquin. Nobody can know of Tyrion's presence or destination. He thinks that between the sailors and Mopatis' servants the word is already out. But his host is confident of their discretion. Tyrion is doubtful. Tyrion tries to unearth Mopatis' true motivations in helping Daenerys Targaryen regain the Iron Throne. The Pentosi claims that he just wants to help the young girl he fell in love with, that he was promised a Westerosi lordship and the role of Master of Coin. None of that convinces Tyrion. They're headed east toward the Rhoyne, where Tyrion will go south by river to Volantis. There Mopatis expects he'll rendezvous with Daenerys and her growing army. Signs of the trouble being caused by the Iron Born are everywhere, and the approaches are patrolled vigilantly. Samwell Tarly wonders if even Horn Hill would be safe for Gilly if the Ironborn are this bold, but he can't think of a better plan.When they arrive in the city, he makes his way to the Citadel to fulfill the two parts of his mission: to enroll and to share the news from the Wall. The seneschal's acolyte keeps him waiting for hours until Alleras (the Sphynx) points out that the man is expecting a bribe. Sam, triggered by this nickname, blurts his whole story to Alleras, who suggests that Sam forget the seneschal and the archmaesters. None of whom would believe him anyway, and instead tell the story to archmaester Marwyn.Sam agrees and by the light of a burning obsidian candle he repeats his tale.
