It should surprise no one that Asheville and other parts of Western North Carolina have become launching pads for a nascent industry of psychedelics. What is surprising is the recent state-sanctioned research into psychedelics and the legislative openness to legalization. My guest today is Daniel Walton, an Asheville journalist who reported and wrote an engaging story about this for the online publication The Assembly of North Carolina. We talk about how the culture around psychedelics has evolved over the past half-century. Daniel tells us about the increasing interest in psychedelic therapy and a utopian retreat in Mars Hill for guided psychedelic exploration. We also discuss pioneering efforts in Oregon and Colorado to decriminalize psychedelics and potentially provide a roadmap for legalization here.00:47 Understanding the Role of Psychedelic Guides01:54 Legal Status of Psychedelics04:17 Psychedelics and Mental Health04:47 Psychedelic Practices in North Carolina07:40 The Psychedelic Society of Asheville09:02 The Role of Research in Psychedelic Acceptance22:56 The Cost and Accessibility of Psychedelics25:04 The Future of Psychedelics26:51 Conclusion: The Potential of PsychedelicsGet five news headlines from around Asheville in your morning inbox. Passenger trains haven't rolled through Asheville since 1975, but there's a serious plan from the North Carolina Department of Transportation to bring them back. Daniel Walton's recent story for Mountain Xpress connects the tracks between three decades of studies and recent federal infrastructure funding to a planned 140-mile route from Asheville east to Salisbury. We talk about the environmental and cultural factors playing into the rekindled interest in passenger rail, how the proposed line out of Asheville would feed into a wider web of passenger lines and a long timeline that could leave the project prone to shifting political and economic winds.Support The Overlook by joining our Patreon campaign!Advertise your event on The Overlook.Instagram: AVLoverlook | Facebook: AVLoverlook | Twitter: AVLoverlookListen and Subscribe: All episodes of The OverlookThe Overlook theme song, "Maker's Song," comes courtesy of the Asheville band The Resonant Rogues.Podcast Asheville © 2023

Despite Asheville's leafy reputation, Western North Carolina doesn't exactly have a robust farming industry for hemp. Daniel Walton, formerly a staff writer and now regular contributor to Mountain Xpress, talks with Matt Peiken about his recent coverage of the region's hemp industry, where the state legislature stands around the legalization of marijuana and how that legalization would affect the hemp and CBD retail markets.Support The Overlook by joining our Patreon campaign!Advertise your event on The Overlook.Instagram: AVLoverlook | Facebook: AVLoverlook | Twitter: AVLoverlookListen and Subscribe: All episodes of The OverlookThe Overlook theme song, "Maker's Song," comes courtesy of the Asheville band The Resonant Rogues.Podcast Asheville © 2023

Having grown up in Sheffield and studied at University in North Wales, Dan has always had a love of the outdoors and adventure. And after many years working in the Outdoor Industry, he founded his company, Worcestershire based OLPRO in 2011, in order to set about changing the boring world of camping and campervans. With his company OLPRO, the main focus of conversation with people has always been via Social Media where they've been awarded year after year for their Social Media content and Customer Services. OLPRO now turns over £3.3 million a year, selling around the world and growing rapidly. Besides running his company, he's also a District Councillor for Malvern Hills and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development. http://olproshop.com (olproshop.com) https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-walton-89236a20/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-walton-89236a20/) https://www.facebook.com/olproltd (https://www.facebook.com/olproltd) https://www.instagram.com/olproeverywhere/ (https://www.instagram.com/olproeverywhere/)

On this episode of ScaleUp Radio we, once again, bring you a compilation of some great business advice that we've heard throughout 2021. There's no getting away from the fact that it's been another challenging year for so many, and we've heard some great insights and advice along the way that have helped many of us, and will continue to help us as we face the new year. We've been lucky enough to have a real range of conversations in the past year - from accountants, lawyers, marketers and IT support right through to restaurant owners, franchisees, funeral directors and gin makers. With all of this diversity it's been really interesting to see how much common ground there is. At the end of the day the key challenges to building and scaling up a business are not unique to any particular industry or sector. Sure, there are differences, but the key things remain the same. All of our guests have provided some great lessons that they have learned along the way, that can be of real benefit to all of us. No matter the size of your business - large or small - make sure that you celebrate the wins that you have achieved this year. Small and medium businesses are the backbone of any successful economy and you don't need me to tell you that it can be hard at times. But hold onto the reasons that you started out in the first place. You set out to achieve something, and we have all achieved something special; something to be proud of. Hold onto that star that guides you and drives and work out how you are going to get that little bit closer to it next year. The links to all of the episodes that these pieces of advice are from are below, so you can spend time getting to know each business owner better. This is the last episode of ScaleUp Radio for this year. I want to thank you for your continued support for ScaleUp Radio. We are now being listened to in 59 countries across the globe, with more of you listening and downloading now than ever before. We'll be back with a new episode on Monday, 10th January. In the meantime, enjoy this excerpts of advice from our episodes in 2021. On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we hear from Daniel Walton, the founder and MD of OLPRO. OLPRO design and make camping equipment, so it's likely that you've used one of their products before. They are a relatively young company - they formed in 2011 - but they have grown an awful lot in that time and, as you'll hear' they experienced one of their biggest periods of growth during the pandemic. Daniel will also talk about how Brexit has affected the company, and the way they do business, but we also cover plenty of other subjects, including: - The process of dealing with the fact that when the business grows, you're not going to know every single member of staff as well as you knew that initial core team. - The value of good marketing within your business, especially during something unpredictable like the pandemic - The process of building a business model that takes sustainability and recycling into account. - Don't underrate the role that luck will play in the success of your business - Share as much as possible with your staff, so that they know where the business is heading This was a great conversation and, as always, I know that there will be something in it for you, no matter where you are on your scale up journey.
