So, let's talk about Autism in Black's 5th Annual Conference and why this one is a little bit more special than the others… If you are a Black autistic individual, a parent, caregiver, or educator to one, or an ally looking to provide better support for Black autistic individuals, this episode—and conference—are FOR YOU. For so long, the Black autism community has struggled with access to resources, culturally responsive care, and finding safe spaces to learn and grow. Imagine having to fight every step of the way to ensure your child receives the support they need—the struggle is real and it leaves families feeling isolated and unheard. But that's exactly why we made sure that this year's conference will be more special than ever. From IEP advocacy to mental health and Black fatherhood, this conference will break barriers, empower families, build community, and push for actionable change. So, if you're ready to make that happen, join me and my wife, Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC, as we take action towards transforming the future for the Black autism community.
Melbourne book publisher Black Inc has caused a stir after it sent a request to its authors to allow for their writing to be used in the training of artificial intelligence.
So, let's talk about why The Black Boys, Men, and Fathers Summit is a must-attend summit this 2025… Imagine discovering that resources for you or your child are scarce, conversations about your lived experiences are nearly non-existent, and no one is talking about the challenges you face daily—let alone solutions on how to overcome them. For many Black autistic men and fathers, this isn't just a challenge—it's their daily reality. And as you know, my wife and I have been working to change that narrative by starting Autism in Black Inc. Following the success of the Black Autistic Girls and Women's Summit, we knew it was time to center the discussion on Black boys, their fathers, and men. That's why in this episode, I'll let you in on the details of the first-ever Black Boys, Men, and Fathers Summit happening on March 8th. A free, one-day virtual event—this summit is designed to empower, educate, and connect. So, if you're a Black autistic man or a father to a Black autistic boy, make sure to tune in to learn about the summit, its purpose, and how you can be part of this groundbreaking movement for change. Why you need to check this episode: Understand the challenges Black boys, men, and fathers face in autism diagnosis and support, and how such disparities impact their life; Recognize the importance of amplifying Black boys, men, and fathers' voices in autism advocacy, creating spaces where they are seen, heard, and supported; and Discover how the Black Boys, Men, and Fathers Summit is creating change, and how you can be part of it. “We just talked to the women; we just talked to the girls. [Now], let's talk to the fathers…to the men out here, and let them know that they are seen, they are heard, and that there's an avenue to have a conversation.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Notable Quotes: “I wanted to see different vantage points, different conversations, that don't typically get had, or if they do, it's maybe one out of 20 sessions.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “Whenever I'm doing an event like this…I'm always thinking about the next…So, while I live in the moment and I can understand the excitement…I'm trying to figure out how to take the idea of this type of summit and make sure we extend it to grow in four to five years. For me, it's all about the long game…It's been so long that the conversation hasn't been centered around the Black autistic community…We don't sign up for these things just to do it one year, and then try something different next year.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “As an organization, the Autism in Black, we're excited to be the ones who are willing to put our necks out there and say, ‘You know what? This conversation isn't happening enough and we're about to do something about it.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list. So, let's talk about the FREE virtual summit happening on October 19th as organized by Autism in Black Inc… Are you a Black autistic girl, woman, or female-presenting? Are you a parent or a caregiver who is raising or has raised a Black autistic girl? Are you a professional working with any of the said populations to help break the stigma and make their life better? If your answer is yes to any of those three, then this episode—and summit—is for you. Because in this episode, we'll talk about The Black Girls and Women's Autism Summit, a FREE virtual event dedicated to addressing the unique needs and experiences of Black autistic girls and women. A first to many more summits to be held annually, we're doing this to educate, empower, and support the Black disability community—to drive home to the fact that our community needs to be observed, looked at, recognized, and more importantly, taken care of, because unfortunately, that's not happening. So, together with my wife, Maria Davis-Pierre, join us as we take a step towards building a more inclusive and supportive future for our Black autistic girls and women. Guest's Bio: Maria Davis-Pierre, the wife of Dr. Berry Pierre, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and the Co-Founder of Autism in Black Inc. Through Autism in Black Inc., she helps educate, empower, and support Black parents who are raising autistic children, while also working with organizations, hospitals, and schools—among many others—that are helping lessen the harm to the Black disability community. As part of the spectrum herself, and being a mother to an autistic child, Maria is dedicated to bringing awareness to autism and reducing the stigma in the Black community. Why you need to check this episode: - Learn about the details of the upcoming Black Girls and Women's Autism Summit; - Discover how you can avail a ticket for free, and/or upgrade to other options with additional inclusions; and - Recognize the importance of having such summits and amplifying the voices of the Black community “We'd rather have our children be prepared than unprepared, especially when we're talking about children who have disabilities, who are neurodivergent. Because those conversations are different for them, and it just doesn't happen in the manner of ‘Now we're talking about it, [and] now you understand'. These are conversations that have to continue and continue and continue…And that's why we're having summits like these—to prepare you as a parent to be able to have these conversations.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC Notable Quotes: “Let's make sure that we are satisfying the needs of our community and giving them the opportunity, like even if they can't pay for a conference ticket, to maybe still enjoy the community that Autism in Black has really grown and empowered over these years, while also getting some learning and some education.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “When you're looking at research that specifically talks about Black autistic girls and women, we are considered ‘intersectionally invisible', and that means we are not in the research. And it actually really does matter because we're out here, we need specialized supports, [and] we need people to understand that our voices matter. So yes, we do need a summit that focuses on what it means to be a black autistic girl and woman. Intersectionality matters when we're talking about being black, being disabled, and being female…It matters because oftentimes, we are talking to the most oppressed communities in that aspect.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC “This is something that we will do every single year, to keep driving home the fact that our community needs to be observed, looked at, recognized, and more importantly, taken care of. Because unfortunately, that's not happening.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Mentions: Autism in Black Inc. So, let's talk about my experience at the ClickFunnels conference and the upcoming changes to keep an eye on in our content… I'm very excited about this week's podcast because I'm just coming back from a conference that I look forward to every single year. And if you've been following me long enough, you'll know that I'm not talking about a medical conference here. Not that I hate medical conferences, but the ones that get me really hyped and energized are just so far from medicine. And today, I'm going to share with you my experiences at that virtual ClickFunnels conference, along with my plans to provide more and more content. This won't be a technical discussion but more of an introduction—to where I'm going, to educate more people and expand our reach. So, if you want to learn how we plan to grow and get bigger and better for you, guys, join us in this week's episode as we discuss the role of marketing in empowering you to take control of your health one disease at a time. Why you need to check this episode: - Recognize the importance of marketing in education, especially in the field of health and medicine; - Discover how the act of treating patients as customers can revolutionize healthcare and patient experience; - Learn about Dr. Berry Pierre's plans for future content—plans aimed at helping grow, better, and empower the community “I understood that as a physician, just being smart medically wasn't going to be enough if I wanted to educate the community I needed to educate at a bigger level. Like, yes, I can educate the person who comes into my office or the person who I see in a hospital. But then, there are hundreds and thousands or millions of people who won't get the education needed because of access reasons, trust reasons, [or] the fact that there's so much bad information that they have to sift through. So, I understood that I needed to not only put my medical thinking hat on but put a different hat on, which was the marketing and everything else kind of under the sun.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Notable Quotes: “I tell doctors all the time: If instead of calling patients ‘patients', you call them ‘customers', you would probably treat them a little better.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “Like I said, we've been doing this for going on 15 years now, and I'm always excited that even in year 15 [or] 14—whatever time frame it is, we still have ways to grow and get bigger and better for you guys.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “I think all of these things here are going to continue to be great drivers for us that again empower ourselves for better health.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Mentions: ClickFunnels Lamar Tyler Autism in Black Inc. So, let's talk about the struggles of being neurodivergent and Black, and how advocacy can help make a world that's truly accepting, loving, and just… Have you ever wondered how couples navigate the unique journey of raising a child on the spectrum? In previous episodes, we had Nick who talked about the experience from the Black fathers' perspective, and Cheryl who talked about advocating when there are forces that make it harder to raise an autistic kid. But what is it like as a couple? What are the dynamics in a relationship when raising an autistic child? This is a conversation that's not often had, especially as parents, we often forget that we also have a life and relationship outside just being moms and dads. But in today's episode, we'll learn the importance of keeping the love burning as husband and wife, the importance of communication, understanding, and care, and the power of partnership in raising a thriving autistic child. After all, as parents, we all just want what's best for our children. Join us as we work towards the end goal and not let the fear of uncertainty stop us. Why you need to check this episode: Learn the importance of being present in your relationship as husband and wife and making time to nurture your connection outside of your responsibilities as parents; Discover actionable tips you can try doing with your partner if you're struggling and are at different points and speeds in your journey; and Recognize the importance of communication and self-care, especially if you're raising a child on the spectrum. “Something else that we also had to learn is that we had to keep our love burning outside of children as well, making sure that we are not just thinking of ourselves as mom and dad. For us to be able to communicate effectively with one another, for us to be able to be around each other and do all these things, we have to have our own relationship outside of parenting; not being in mom-and-dad role, but being in husband-and-wife role as well for our relationship.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC Notable Quotes: “One of the lessons that you definitely taught me was that if I'm saying it in my head, you're not a mind-reader and I have to verbalize it to you. I cannot have the expectation that you should know.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC “Communicate with your partner; where you're at, your fears, your concerns. Oftentimes, people are either afraid or have shame in what they're feeling, so they don't voice those concerns, but your co-parent, your partner, should be someone that you trust and can share those emotions with.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC “Make sure you have a therapist that you can go to for couples, for family, [and] for individuals…You don't have to have problems to be going to a therapist.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC Connect with Maria Davis-Pierre and the Autism in Black Inc.: Website Instagram Facebook Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list. For over a year, Ariane hid the true severity of her symptoms and tried so hard to portray a choreographed image of the good, responsive mother who kept it all together. Motherhood was the performance of her life… until it wasn't. The stage makeup and sparkles fell away when her symptoms escalated and she had to be admitted to a general psychiatric hospital. Ariane had to finally step out of the spotlight and allow her psychiatrist to take the lead, but this is when she was able to recover. In this episode we discuss all the facets of Ariane's recovery: medication, diagnosis, psychodynamic therapy with her psychiatrist, a hospital admission, art therapy, dancing, embracing the mundanity of recovery, and finding purpose through writing, advocating via the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE), teaching ballet, and publishing her new novel, Because I'm Not Myself, You See. Part story, part book review, part in-depth discussion about the current state of perinatal mental health and advocacy, and part amused ramblings from two MBU graduates, this is part two of Ariane's story. Buckle up, it's going to be quite the ride. GIVEAWAY Congratulations to the winners who scored one of FIVE copies of Ariane's new book 'Because I'm Not Myself, You See: A Memoir of Motherhood, Madness, and Coming Back From the Brink' thanks to the generosity of our friends at Black Inc. When Ariane became a mother, it wasn't just the sudden onset of delusions, hallucinations, and severe depression that haunted her early days of parenting. From body image triggers, the pervasive grip of perfectionism, the reluctance to seek help, and the fear of her son being forcibly removed, it was also Ariane's complex history as a ballet dancer, case worker and registered psychologist that cast a long, dark shadow over her mental health in pregnancy and postpartum. In this episode, I am joined by none other than Ariane Beeston, author of the newly released memoir Because I'm not Myself, You See, who so vulnerably revisits the ghosts of her past with me and who shares, with incredible insight, the realities of mental ill health as both a patient, former practitioner, and advocate. This is part one of Ariane's harrowing, albeit profound, story, that explores her formative years and early motherhood, up until the moment she realised she had to release the control she sought over her past and present in order to welcome recovery in the future. Please note, this episode discusses suicidal ideation, and briefly mentions suicide and infanticide. Go gently. GIVEAWAY Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Black Inc., I am giving away FIVE copies of Ariane Beeston's new book 'Because I'm Not Myself, You See: A Memoir of Motherhood, Madness, and Coming Back From the Brink'. Australian residents can enter the giveaway via my Instagram @perinatalstoriesaustralia anytime between now and 11:59PM Sunday 2nd June 2024 AEST. Winners will be drawn randomly on Monday 3rd June. So, let's talk about this year's Autism in Black Conference with my favorite special guest, Maria Davis-Pierre… In last week's episode (I suggest that you watch it if you haven't), I gave my recap of the fourth annual Autism in Black Conference. From being an organizer, a speaker, and a community member, we talked about my experience, especially highlighting the emotionally enriching panel for fathers that we had this year. It was such an awe-inspiring place to be in, but of course, the recap wouldn't be complete without hearing from the CEO and Founder of Autism in Black Inc. That's why in this week's podcast, I brought with me that very person, my favorite special guest, Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC. Here, we'll talk about the conference from her experience, highlighting how without your support, all this wouldn't even be in existence. So, join us and don't miss this week's episode as we all look back to what transpired during the fourth annual conference of the Autism in Black. Why you need to check this episode: Get to know the experience and thoughts of the Autism in Black Inc.'s Founder and President throughout the fourth run of the conference; Recognize the importance of providing support and focus to autistic adults; and Find out what's in store for you on the fifth run of the Autism in Black Conference next year (2025) “We appreciate all of the Autism in Black community, because without your support, [and] without our speakers' support, we wouldn't be able to do it. So, thank you, all, truly.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC Notable Quotes: “Once the actual conference started, it was just like community and home, so all of the nerves went away and it was just, again, beautiful to be with our community for the weekend.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC “I think there's not a lot of focus on us as autistic adults. It's something that people have been asking for [and] it's something that I needed as an autistic adult – having that community. I think there is so much focus sometimes when organizations focus on the children and don't realize we turn into autistic adults and there's no support out there for us. So, it was very intentional this year to make sure that we really had a lot of content for autistic adults.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC “I tell everybody every year: just as you all are learning, I'm learning too.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC “Having a community of people who want to support you and support what you do because they think that it's important as well and they get something out of it just as much as you do is just a beautiful sight to see. I think a lot of people are thinking ‘competition, competition, competition', but what we really focus on is collaboration and being there, supporting one another. Having that community and knowing that we are doing that for one another is a wonderful aspect.” – Maria Davis-Pierre, LMHC Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list. So, let's talk about the Autism in Black Conference for the year 2024… The Autism in Black Conference is rooted in our own family's journey. It all began when our daughter was diagnosed with autism at 18 months, and not long after that, we discovered that my wife shares the same journey. Seeking proper healthcare for our daughter, we encountered numerous hurdles, made a lot more difficult by the unique challenge of being Black. And that is the gap that my wife, Maria Davis-Pierre, really wanted to bridge. Maria Davis-Pierre is a licensed mental health counselor and is the founder and CEO of Autism in Black, an organization that aims to provide support to parents who raise autistic children through educational and advocacy services. Every year, they do an Autism in Black Conference, aiming to provide a safe space for those within the spectrum. The conference, born from our experiences, is more than just an event; it is a beacon of understanding and compassion, connecting those facing similar struggles, and ensuring no one walks their journey alone. In this episode, Maria sheds light on everything you need to know about this annual advocacy-driven event scheduled to happen on the 19th to 21st of April of this year 2024. Why you need to check this episode: Get to know Maria Davis-Pierre, CEO and Founder of Autism in Black Inc.; Understand the driving force behind the Autism in Black advocacy, and how it serves as a safe space for people within the spectrum; and Discover the anticipated highlights of this year's Autism in Black Conference, to happen on the 19th to 21st of April “Even if you are not on the East Coast, this conference is for you, wherever you are [in the world].” – Maria Davis-Pierre Notable Quotes: “No matter the amount of privilege, those biases get in the way all the time.” – Maria Davis-Pierre “We're back to a fully virtual conference, and we do that, definitely, in consideration of families. Because we know that it takes a lot to find child care, to set up being able to leave your home for three days and attend a conference, and we want you guys to be able to get the content, lean in, listen, feel that community, and not have to worry about those things.” – Maria Davis-Pierre “Especially in this community, that feeling of being safe is so important. Being Black is difficult; being Black is tough. So, imagine being Black, being autistic, and then having to navigate the world through those lenses.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “For me, it's knowing that we're providing that safe space for our attendees and our speakers. Our speakers have said the same thing, and our attendees have said this—it's a safe space, and they haven't been in a space that is so Black and neuro-affirming at the same time, where they don't have to have their defenses out, where they can let that guard down and say whatever's on their mind in a judgment-free zone.” – Maria Davis-Pierre Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list. IPCC scientist Dr Joëlle Gergis joins The Women's Agenda Podcast The science of climate change can be overwhelming, upsetting, and leave us tempted to turn away. Alistair Paton joins today, writer of Of Marsupials and Men (Black Inc, 2022), a book recounting the fascinating and often hilarious history of the men and women who dedicated their lives to understanding Australia's native animals. To the first European colonists, Australian wildlife was bewildering. Marsupials and gum trees seemed strange and hostile; rabbits, sheep and oak trees were familiar and safe. A bustling animal trade soon developed in both directions: foxes, starlings and other reminders of ‘home' were unleashed on the Australian landscape, while countless Australian animals found themselves in Europe as stuffed specimens or living curiosities in zoos and private collections. Into this picture stepped a remarkable band of enthusiastic amateurs who were determined to get to know the fauna of the new colony. Equal parts inspiring and outlandish, over the next 150 years they would advance scientific understanding and transform public attitudes to Australian wildlife. From the ‘snake men' who fearlessly thrust their arms into hollow logs just to see what might happen, to the top-secret plan to smuggle a platypus to Winston Churchill at the height of World War II, these are their stories. Alistair Paton is the co-author of Discovering Grampians-Gariwerd and a regular contributor to travel and outdoors publications. He has worked at News Corp for twenty years and his current role is as digital editor in the national sport network. He is passionate about wild places and wild animals and lives in Melbourne with his wife Hanna and slightly domesticated terrier cross Lenny. Bede Haines is a solicitor, specialising in litigation and a partner at Holding Redlich, an Australian commercial law firm. He lives in Sydney, Australia. With Australia's federal election to be held this Saturday, Allan and Darren conduct a quick discussion of the role foreign policy has played over the past month during the campaign, and what we can learn regardless of who will form government. Then, to finish, eyebrows are raised in response to reporting detailing secret conversations between very senior Australian and US national security officials regarding AUKUS and the US' need for bipartisan support for the deal within Australia. The saga of Australia continues with... Girt Nation: The Unauthorised History of Australia, Volume 3 (Black Inc., 2021). David Hunt tramples the tall poppies of the past in charting Australia's transformation from aspiration to nation - an epic tale of charlatans and costermongers, of bush bards and bushier beards, of workers and women who weren't going to take it anymore. Girt Nation introduces Alfred Deakin, the Liberal necromancer whose dead advisors made Australia a better place to live, and Banjo Paterson, the jihadist who called on God and the Prophet to drive the Australian infidels from the Sudan 'like sand before the gale'. And meet Catherine Helen Spence, the feminist polymath who envisaged a utopian future of free contraceptives, easy divorce and immigration restrictions to prevent the 'Chinese coming to destroy all we have struggled for!' Thrill as Jandamarra leads the Bunuba against Western Australia, and Valentine Keating leads the Crutchy Push, an all-amputee street gang, against the conventionally limbed. Gasp as Essendon Football Club trainer Carl von Ledebur injects his charges with crushed dog and goat testicles. Weep as Scott Morrison's communist great-great-aunt Mary Gilmore holds a hose in New Australia. And marvel at how Labor, a political party that spent a quarter of a century infighting over how to spell its own name, ever rose to power. David Hunt is an unusually tall and handsome man who likes writing his own biographical notes. He is the author of the bestselling Girt and True Girt, as well as two books for children. David is also a television presenter and podcaster, and has a birthmark that looks like Tasmania, only smaller and not as far south. Bede Haines is a solicitor, specialising in litigation and a partner at Holding Redlich, an Australian commercial law firm. He lives in Sydney, Australia. Known to read books, ride bikes and eat cereal (often). bede.haines@holdingredlich.com Learn more about your ad choices. 'I wanted to dig into the complexity of an event like that, and allow people to see not just the humanity of the people involved, but also the negative aspects of how these events play out.' Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction in the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For May that debut is Car Crash: A Memoir by Lech Blaine, out now from Black Inc. At seventeen, Lech Blaine walked away unharmed from a car crash that killed three of his friends and left two in comas. In the aftermath, rumours about speed and drink driving erupted. There was intense scrutiny from media and police. Lech used alcohol to numb his grief and social media to show stoicism, while secretly spiralling towards depression and disgrace. This is a riveting account of family, friendship, grief and love after tragedy. Heartbreaking and darkly hilarious, Car Crash is a story for our times. First Book Club host Ellen Cregan spoke with Lech about the book, revisiting past trauma and the power of brutally honest feedback. Editor's Note: This conversation touches on difficult topics such as death, grief and trauma. Our theme song is Broke for Free's ‘Something Elated'. Production assistance from Lloyd Pratt. Further reading: Read Ellen Cregan's review of Car Crash in our May Books Roundup. Lech spoke to Bri Lee in 2017 about the process of writing a memoir in your twenties. Lech recommends Rick Morton's My Year of Living Vulnerably: Rick shares his workspace and writing practice for Show Your Working. Buy a copy of the book from Brunswick Bound. (more…)
