Dave Wessels is the former Head Coach for the Melbourne Rebels & The Western Force. And is the current Head of Rugby for the Stormers.
Host Carl Lewis is joined by rugby coach Dave Wessels and journalist Simnikiwe Xabanisa as they discuss the biggest talking points in South African and world rugby. Ireland significantly enhanced their number-one standing in world rugby when they saw off the Springboks 19-16 in a tense Test in Dublin on a cool but comfortable Saturday evening. Were Ireland the better side? In front of their passionate crowd, they were, and the critical part was their ability to make their chances count. They struck twice in four minutes just after the half-time break through loose-forward Josh van der Flier and wing Mack Hansen to give Ireland a 10-point buffer that was too much for the Boks to overhaul. The Boks had more than a decent foothold in the game, but the lack of a regular goal-kicker hurt them badly. The seven points that were missed off the tee by Damian Willemse and Cheslin Kolbe would have swung the game in the Boks' favour. The Boks were also guilty of being creatively blunt in the red zone and it's something they desperately need to fix ahead of next week's clash against France. Ireland have not only kept a 10-year home unbeaten streak against the Boks, but have beaten New Zealand and the world champions in the space of a year. Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber has made a few changes to his team for Saturday's Test against France in Marseille. Stormers flyhalf Manie Libbok is chosen on the bench and will make his Test debut is he gets a run. Libbok's inclusion is likely to cover for the team's shaky goalkicking that was exposed in last weekend's 19-16 defeat to Ireland in Dublin. In all, Nienaber has made five changes and two positional switches from the side that ran out against Ireland. Willie le Roux comes back into the starting XV at fullback, with Cheslin Kolbe moving to right wing and Kurt-Lee Arendse to left wing as Makazole Mapimpi drops to the bench. The other change in the backline sees Faf de Klerk replace Jaden Hendrikse at scrumhalf, forming a halfback combination with Damian Willemse. The Bok mentor also made changes to his forward pack, with tighthead prop Frans Malherbe packing down in a new-look front row alongside Bongi Mbonambi (hooker) and Ox Nche (loosehead prop). Franco Mostert also starts at lock in place of the injured Lood de Jager. Other changes on the bench include Cobus Reinach as scrumhalf cover, with Hendrikse dropping out of the match-day squad. Steven Kitshoff (prop), Malcolm Marx (hooker) and Marvin Orie (lock) also feature on the bench as the Boks this week opted for a five-three forwards-backs split on the bench

Host Carl Lewis is joined by coach Dave Wessels and veteran journalist Simnikiwe Xabanisa and they discuss the biggest talking points in world rugby and South African rugby. In this episode, they discuss Worcester Warriors and Wasps and what their financial problems mean for professional rugby around the world. Finances in world rugby CVC Capital and private equity in rugby Lions: Should we take this Lions side seriously: Henco van Wyk seems legit, does have what it takes to make it all the way? 19-yer-old Ruan Venter looks like another gem from the South African loose forward production line Sharks: Thoughts on the Sharks so far... What is the minimum that the SHakrs need to achieve this season for Sean Everitt to be safe? Stormers Great start for the Stormers this season...thoughts so far... Sacha Mngomezulu looked comfortable against Zebre, kicking was also on point... breakout season? Bulls Their loss to Glasgow - should we be concerned? Unprepared or outplayed? They face Munster next, it could potentially become a poor tour if they lose to the Irish...big pressure or still early season?
Host Carl Lewis is back the usual loose trio coach Dave Wessels and rugby journalist Simnikiwe Xabanisa for another episode of the School of Hard Knocks-Ons. In this rugby podcast, the trio focus on: Preview of the Rugby Championship clash between Argentina and South Africa. The Springboks have named an unchanged Starting XV for the Pumas Test. Talented young loose forward Elrigh Louw takes over from Duane Vermeulen on the bench, Faf de Klerk returns as scrumhalf cover in place of Cobus Reinach, and Andre Esterhuizen gets a run in place of Warrick Gelant in the match, which has been moved to Estadio Libertadores De América. With New Zealand on 10 log points and the Springboks, Australia and Argentina trailing by only one point each on nine points– although Nienaber's men are currently in second place on the standings due to a favourable points difference – all four teams are under pressure to win their remaining matches and preferably with bonus points to give themselves the best possible chance of winning the title. With the Boks coming off a strong performance against Australia in Sydney in their last match two weeks ago, where they registered a convincing 24-8 bonus-point victory, Nienaber opted to retain the starting team that laid a strong foundation for the win. We also touch on Elton Jantjies and take a look at it from a coaches and media perspective. We then look ahead to the Unit3d Rugby Championship where the Bulls and Lions kick off the season from a South African perspective.
Host Carl Lewis and coach Dave Wessels are joined by rugby coach and analyst Eoin Toolan for a fascinating chat on the Springboks, Wallabies, All Blacks and the Rugby Championship in general. They cover: Joe Schmidt's influence on the New Zealand gameplan and attacking structure South Africa's attacking structure Australia lacks an identity at the moment and lacks consistency Should Jacques Nienaber consider Damian Willemse as a serious contender for the number 10 jersey? Thoughts on the Bomb Squad and whether Malcolm Marx and co should start matches going forward Australia's rugby union struggles - no real financial clout
Host Carl Lewis is joined by Dave Wessels and Simnikiwe Xabanisa for another episode of the School of Hard Konock-Ons. The trio dissect Australia's big win against the Springboks in Adelaide over the weekend. They cover Nienanber's selection, tactics and plan for the World Cup. Argentina beat the All Blacks in empathetic fashion and Michael Cheika deserves his credit for masterminding the victory. They also preview this week's action of the Rugby Championship and make their predictions for the action between the Wallabies v Springboks and All Blacks v Argentina. South Africa rang the changes on Tuesday in their search for a desperately needed win against Australia, with eight new players named in the starting team, partly due to injuries. The Springboks head into the clash on Saturday in Sydney after back-to-back defeats, a 35-23 loss to the All Blacks at home before crashing 25-17 against the Wallabies in Adelaide. It left the world champions bottom of the four-team Rugby Championship with three games to play and in dire need of a victory to keep their hopes alive. "We selected a team we thought would be best for this match given that we have several players out with injuries and with an eye on how we want to play," said coach Jacques Nienaber, whose team have failed to win on Australian soil since 2013. "We let ourselves down in the last two games and we are determined to rectify that this week and change our fortunes in Australia. We'll prepare as well as possible this week to stay in the hunt for the title." Four of the changes are injury-enforced with Handre Pollard, Lukhanyo Am and Pieter-Steph du Toit all out with knee problems, while Elton Jantjies has hurt his hand. It means Damian Willemse will move from fullback to flyhalf, Jesse Kriel slots in at centre and Franco Mostert was included in the loose trio. Talented young back Canan Moodie will make his Springbok debut on the right wing in a positional switch with Warrick Gelant, who moves to the bench. The experienced Willie le Roux takes Willemse's place at fullback in his 77th Test, with the other backline change at scrumhalf, where Jaden Hendrikse replaces Faf de Klerk who was axed from the 23. Prop Steven Kitshoff and hooker Malcolm Marx earn starts in a new-look front row with Frans Malherbe while Jasper Wiese takes over at No.8 from veteran Duane Vermeulen, who is among the replacements. The changes forced a reshuffle of the front row on the bench, with Deon Fourie the replacement hooker, and Ox Nche and Trevor Nyakane providing cover at prop. Cobus Reinach is the replacement scrumhalf while the experienced Frans Steyn offers options at flyhalf and centre.

New Zealand clash with the Springboks at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, then Johannesburg seven days later, in the opening rounds of the 2022 Rugby Championship. The All Blacks have faced a barrage of criticism from pundits and fans in New Zealand since the humbling 2-1 home series defeat to Ireland. They have now lost four of their last five games.
