Allen is a Welshman and London Welsh man through and through. Played for Risca all the way through school and then decided to get out of the Wales bubble to further both his academic and rugby education up in Newcastle. This is the time when Newcastle Falcons where at the top of the Premiership with the help of the backing of Sir John Hall's investment and full of International players, like Johnny Wilkinson, Tom May, Doddie Weir and Gary Armstrong. He enjoyed his 5 years there, but was asked to come back to Wales to have a crack at getting in the Wales squad and signed for Celtic Warriors. That didn't work out, so he had 6 months playing for Gordon's in Australia and some time at Henley, where he first encountered playing at London Welsh. He then had a conversation with Adrian and realised he could play top quality rugby at Old Deer Park and begin his career in the city. He played under Adrian, Martin Jones and Danny Wilson before deciding to study for an MBA to further his career. What you hear in this interview, is how deep the friendships Allen made at London Welsh forged by training on Tuesday and Thursday, followed by long bus trips to Cornwall or up North, where you really get to know your team mates. A real pleasure to hear from Allen. Enjoy

You're listening to Bears Beyond The Gate, a Bristol Bears podcast made by fans for fans. We three regulars at Ashton Gate who love the club, the game and all things Bears. This week we look back on two Saturday fixtures with the Women going first with a bonus point victory 43-29 win against Leicester Tigers women at Ashton Gate and the Men managing to snatch defeat from the Jaws of a Draw at the Stade Marcel Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand.It was another welcome 5 points for the Women in their quest for a play off semi final but given that they conceded 29 points to a team that were beaten 100 nil last weekend by Saracens, does their defence review definitely fall into the ‘learnings and work-ons' category. Furthermore, it's our longest and most in-depth review of a Bears' Women game ever!As for the Men, it was the second year in a row that they got dumped out of two European cup competitions in one fell swoop albeit in much more courageous circumstances than that dark night in Galway last season. There is no doubt that we were handed an insanely tough group but should we be expecting more and did we get our game management right on the night? The debate rages. Finally, we look forward to the visit of Newcastle Falcons next Sunday with all our fingers and toes crossed that we didn't pick up any more injuries in France. Is five points a non negotiable or will it be a trickier fixture than our respective league positions might suggest.Check out Dream XV Rugby by clicking hereLet us know what you think!

In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse Green is joined by fellow dentist from the U.K Dr. Rupert Neville, who, along with his wife Alannah, own dental practices in the south of England. Rupert is a long term client of Savvy Dentist, and has a really great perspective, not just about business, but about life. Rupert is a deeply reflective human being and very courageous in the way he goes about life. Rupert shines a light on a pathway for dental practice owners that might be going through challenges to help them come out the other side. And of course, the pathway is not always beautifully laid out. Rupert has had to deal with his share of challenges along the way, as you'll hear in this podcast, and the way he's overcome them has been magnificent.  Rupert qualified from Newcastle University (U.K) in 2006 and started working at the Lodge Dental Surgery in 2007. He bought the practice with his wife Alannah in 2011. He has recently become a validation supervisor (trainer) for dentists.  Away from dentistry Rupert is a keen sportsman and played rugby for Newcastle Falcons between 2000-2006 .  He now enjoys coaching. [03:31] - A valuable lesson in resilience for every parent. [07:17] - The power of sports in helping us be better dental practitioners and ‘bounce back'. [14:51] - The importance of finding good role models and mentors. [18:04] Spending your day ‘running and gunning' is exhausting. Dr. Rupert Neville offers a healthier and more efficient alternative. [21:10] - The importance (and team power) of you being vulnerable can never be understated.  [23:53] - COVID from a UK perspective. What it was like working in a dental business in the UK during the pandemic. [30:48] - Rupert explains how he built his powerful team, and what he does to lead and empower them. [36:48] - Taking over an established practice … verse … starting a practice. Compare the pair! [43:51] - Being a leader means you must have a passion and strong vision for the future of your practice, and the team. It also means you must make tough decisions at times. For Dr. Neville, removing his practice from the UK DEMPLAN system after 30 years meant losing long term patients, for the long term sustainability and profitability of the business.

Demystifying Mental Toughness
129 How to Deal with Self-Criticism using Self Compassion – Part 1

Demystifying Mental Toughness

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2022 13:00

This is a short solo episode and the first of 3 episodes where I share 2 reminders of what Mental Toughness is and apply it to different domains.  The first clip is from Mental Toughness pioneer, Doug Strycharczyk which was recorded in our very first episode and the second clip comes from Sebastian De Chavez an elite professional rugby player for Newcastle Falcons who appeared in episode 104.   I then go on to share a case study and one helpful exercise taken from compassionate focused therapy to help people who experience self-criticism and are very hard on themselves off the back of failing or making mistakes in sport or life. Key Learning Points Doug states that Mental Toughness is about “how we respond mentally to things that happen to us.”  Seb confirms this in a professional rugby setting and considers mental toughness as “being able to get your job done, when things aren't going your way.” In sport when someone makes a mistake, often as an onlooker or spectator we are better placed to say “they're only human” and display compassion. Yet, when we are the culprit making the mistake, we often find displaying self-compassion very tough.  For many it is virtually impossible, especially in sport when you and your performances are being judged or at least you think they are.  And your emotions are so up and down because you are striving for competence. A common thing people get wrong when thinking of being self-compassionate or being kind to yourself is that it equals self-pity or that you are being “soft”.   Self-compassion doesn't mean that you are lacking in motivation either. Understanding the pain that you are put yourself through by being self-critical is vital and by trying to feel compassionate you can empower yourself to make better decisions. Encouraging, loving and supportive language is a much more powerful motivator than negativity and fear which is often a habit a lot of people can slip into, especially in a sporting environment.
