Western Force defeated Moana Pasifika 35-19 in Pukekohe last night, which is their first win on Kiwi soil since 2022. It also marks their first win of the season, leaving the Crusaders and Drua as the only two teams yet to secure a victory. Western Force centre and Former All Black George Bridge told Jason Pine that the result is a great boost to the team's confidence. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week the Moana Pasifika Super Rugby Pacific franchise conceded that their round 9 fixture against the Chiefs will not take place in the Kingdom of Tonga. Short of a last-minute significant sponsorship deal, the game will be played in either Pukekohe or Rotorua. This will be the second time in as many years that the Auckland based team will be unable to ply their trade on the friendly islands. This is wretched news for the fans in Tonga. To have a Super game in their backyard would be a sporting highlight for the populace, to be denied again is heartbreaking for the team (according to CEO Debbie Sorenson) and for the rugby mad fans across the archipelago, all 170 islands....or the 40-odd inhabited ones at least. Emotionally difficult, but fiscally impossible. Even if they could extract 600 k of sponsorship blood out of the stone of our embattled economy, it would be irresponsible to use that money to spend 80 minutes playing rugby in front of 10,000 people. It makes no sense. And it wouldn't make any dollars either. The $600 k is based on the cost of the broadcast; a figure Sky TV won't assist with. Really? That much? Look at the NPC, they film that on a potato, surely they could drastically reduce costs, shoot an inferior product for the good of the people of Tonga. Playing there is a wonderfully romantic notion, and I commend Manu Pasifika for having a crack, but the reality is that that trip to Nuku'alofa is a nice to have, nothing more, nothing less - and that's the long and short of it. Manu Pasifika may represent the islands, but with a Pasifika population in Auckland of 400, 000, this where the focus of the club should be. Tamaki Makaurau is the hotbed of Pacific rugby talent. This city is where the eyeballs are, where the crowd numbers should be and where their success will be built. Sure, as an aspirational exercise for the kids of the Kingdom – you've got to see it to be it – it would be a significant exercise, but beyond the moth filled pockets of Moana Pasifika. I'm under the impression that the king of Tonga is worth a few sheckles, maybe hit him up to cover the costs? Regardless, it's not going to happen soon, if it should happen at all. That'll do. Earlier this week, it was announced that Moana Pasifika would not be taking a game to Tonga for the second time in as many years. Last year it was due to issues with the grounds lighting, this year they are unable to cover the $600,000 it would cost to bring all the required broadcasting equipment for the game. This is despite discussions with sponsors that unfortunately fell through. Debbie Sorensen is the CEO of Moana Pasifika and she joined D'Arcy to discuss. I've done my best to avoid the headlines over the last few weeks, but Scott Robertson being booted from the All Blacks snapped me back. I feel for him. Just as I did for Ian Foster, last time around. These guys are in high profile jobs, coaching high performance athletes. All top coaches know it's a perilous business. But to be cut after just two years in the job, and after a period of inconsistent and occasionally poor but not absolutely catastrophic results, will leave Razor and his keenest supporters forever wondering what might have been. I don't have any inside running on the review or the process that led David Kirk and NZ Rugby to swing the axe. But it occurs to me that one of Scott Robertson's biggest errors was one of his first major decisions in the role, and I've been wondering to what extent it set the tone for his tenure. June 24, 2024. The All Blacks were preparing for their mid-year tests against England and Fiji, and Scott Robertson named the man who would captain the All Blacks. I was stunned when he made that announcement. I said as much on this show. Not because I don't think Scott Barrett is an incredible rugby player. Not because I don't think he's an outstanding leader and he isn't deserving of the All Blacks captaincy. But because for anyone with even a passing interest in the game and the team, there was a much more obvious candidate hiding in plain sight. Robertson said he had an established relationship with Barrett from their time at the Crusaders. Very well, but surely coaching the national team meant other factors should be prioritised? Surely getting the best was more important than sticking with what you know?! And surely winning the trust of the playing group begins with empowering their obvious leader? Captaincy carries different responsibilities in different sports. In cricket, it's a significant tactical burden. Every ball your team bowls, you're theoretically making a decision. In football, netball, and rugby, a little less. You're not setting fields or choosing bowlers. You have a game plan or a formation, but apart from the odd decision on penalties and a well-timed word to the ref, most of the game more or less happens in the moment. It puts a different kind of demand on leadership. One that is less overtly tactical, and focuses on the sort of person whose play, and behaviour will unite his teammates, inspire their play, and set a standard for the team. And come on, I say this as a lifelong Canterbury fan, does anyone in this country think Ardie Savea isn't that man? If you were picking 15 starting players for the All Blacks, in order of value to the team, there is surely not a single rugby fan who wouldn't pick Ardie first, almost every time. If you were picking a World XV, he's maybe the only current All Black who'd be a shoo-in. The man is an incredible physical force. He has a cool head. He's tactically as good as anyone else. And above all, he oozes mana. And the frustrating thing is, we can all see it. You can see it in the haka, or when he's charging with those high knees or winning a turnover. You can see it in the way opposition plays like Siya Kolisi embrace him. You can see it when a side like Moana Pasifika goes from averaging 12th place in its first three seasons to finishing seventh under his leadership, with more points than the previous two season combined. I think if we were to go back ten years, to the Whitelock-McCaw-Smith-Smith-Carter era, you could argue that our talent was so much better than in most other rugby playing nations, the captaincy perhaps didn't matter as much. But now that the World has caught up, it beggars belief that Razor didn't make Ardie Savea captain. That he didn't see the leadership and esteem that was jumping out of the television. And what message did that send to the team? I don't know what happened. But maybe Scott Robertson's mistake was that he thought by emulating his Crusaders setup as much as possible, he would replicate the success. But he needed to go further. He needed to take greater risks and forge new relationships. And I think that one decision had a huge, outsized impact. And now, having worked for so many years to win the job, just like that, Razor's opportunity is gone. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's probably sensible, don't you think, for the Blues to consider leaving Eden Park for Mt Smart? It's not going to fix the attendance issues, though they seem to be hoping it will. In the consultation they're doing, the question they're asking fans is whether moving to Mt Smart will make them “more or less likely to attend Blues Super Rugby [mens] home games”. The fans might say yes, but they won't. Mt Smart is no better than Eden Park. It's not easier to get to there with public transport, it's about the same. If you drive you still have to find a park somewhere on the road, or on private property. You're still exposed to the elements in the stand. You're still paying for your beer and chips instead of getting them out of your kitchen. Maybe you could argue Mt Smart has a slight advantage in that you're coming straight off the motorway instead of fighting to get down Dominion Road, but I don't think that's enough of a difference to supercharge the crowd. Maybe you could argue that because the Warriors and Auckland FC are there, fans form a habit, so they go because they know how to go. But again, I don't think that's the problem. I think the problem is Super Rugby You're seeing poor turnout for Super Rugby regular season games around the country. 6000 are turning up for Moana Pasifika games. 13,000 for the Crusaders. 11,000 for the Blues. 11,000 in a 50,000 capacity stadium looks horrible. 11,000 in a 25,000 capacity stadium like Mt Smart looks less bad. But it's giving up, isn't it? The Blues leaving the home of rugby is basically accepting that this is how it is, that the crowd size of 11,000 is simply how it's going to be. What they should really be doing is finding smart ways to get us to come to Super Rugby games again. Find ways to get families along. Eden Park's kid zone with the bouncy castle is the right kind of thinking. Find ways to get us excited about the game of rugby. I'm sorry, but it's a boring product. Unless they do that, crowds that only fill quarter of a stadium are the future, in which case, move to Mt Smart. A smaller stadium will hide the empty seats better. All Black Ardie Savea is backing his under-fire Super Rugby Pacific side. Concerns are being raised around the use of taxpayer money to fund Moana Pasifika. Our newsroom's revealed the Super Rugby franchise received some $8 million in taxpayer loans, grants, and funding. The Pasifika Medical Association —which took over ownership of the team last year— has received funding from Whānau Ora contracts.
