We think we know what a genius is: a tortured poet; rebellious scientist; monstrous artist; or a tech disruptor. You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius says Helen Lewis in her new book, The Genius Myth: The Dangerous Allure of Rebels, Monsters and Rule-Breakers. From Leonardo da Vinci to Elon Musk, she asks if the modern idea of genius, as a class of special people, is distorting our view of the world. With ten platinum albums Tupac Shakur was one of the stars of hip hop music when he was murdered at the age of 25. His music was very influential and his name is also associated with the legacy of Black Panther politics. In Words for My Comrades: A Political Biography of Tupac Shakur, Dean Van Nguyen argues that while much of the energy of the Black political movement was absorbed by the commercial music culture of the 1990s – Tupac's contribution lives on today. Gertrude Stein was considered a genius by some, a charlatan by others. She posed for Picasso's portrait; hosted Matisse and Hemingway in Bohemian Paris; and she dazzled American crowds on her sell-out tour for her sensational Autobiography of Alice B Toklas, a version of the relationship with her partner. Francesca Wade's new book Gertrude Stein: An Afterlife, explores the creation of the Stein myth. Presenter: Adam Rutherford Producer: Ruth Watts

On this episode, Marc talks with Dean Van Nguyen, author of "Words for My Comrades: A Political History of Tupac Shakur," published in May of 2025. It's a fascinating look at the socially-conscious life of rapper 2Pac, developed while growing up around radical black activism, particularly that of his mother Afeni Shakur of the Black Panther Party. This includes a thrilling opening section which serves as a kind of miniature history of the African-American left in the 60s, 70s, and beyond. As Dean writes, "Words for My Comrades is the story of how Tupac Shakur came to exemplify radicalism and revolution...How did a man who made music to dance to find himself elevated to a status that's commonly the realm of civil rights leaders and guerrilla warfare commanders?"You can buy "Words for My Comrades" here, and we hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Dean Van Nguyen!

Matt Crawford speaks with author Dean Van Nguyen about his book, Words for My Comrades: A Political History of Tupac Shakur. Before his murder at age twenty-five, Tupac Shakur rose to staggering artistic heights as the preeminent storyteller of the 1990s, building, in the process, one of the most iconic public personas of the last half century. He recorded no fewer than ten platinum albums, starred in major films, and became an activist and political hero known the world over. In this cultural history, journalist Van Nguyen reckons with Tupac's coming of age, fame, and cultural capital, and how the political machinations that shaped him as a boy have since buoyed his legacy as a revolutionary following the George Floyd uprisings. Words for My Comrades engages—crucially—with the influence of Tupac's mother, Afeni, whose role in the Black Panther Party and dedication to dismantling American imperialism and combating police brutality informed Tupac's art. Tupac's childhood as a son of the Panthers, coupled with the influence of his stepfather's Marxist beliefs, informed his own riveting code of ethics that helped audiences grapple with America's inherent injustices. Using oral histories from conversations with the people who directly witnessed Tupac's life and career, many of whom were interviewed for the first time here—from Panther elder Aaron Dixon, to music video director Stephen Ashley Blake, to friends and contemporaries of Tupac's mother—Van Nguyen demonstrates how Tupac became one of the most enduring musical legends in hip-hop history, and how intimately his name is threaded with the legacy of Black Panther politics. Van Nguyen reveals how Tupac and Afeni each championed the disenfranchised in distinct ways, and how their mother-son bond charts a narrative of the last fifty years of revolutionary Black American politics. Words for My Comrades is the story of how the energy of the Black political movement was subsumed by culture, and how America produced two of its most iconic, enduring revolutionaries.

Hi friends! Welcome back to another ep of Culture Club. We jump right into it this week discussing our thoughts on Sex Education and our King Lil Nas X' new album. There's also an update on last week's story about the reality series The Activist. We read from judge Julianne Hough's Instagram apology. The biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala took place last week. We chat about the behind-the-scenes GRWM videos and the appeal of BTS film photos. Activist slogans were front and centre on the red carpet. We break down if Cara Delevigne's ‘Peg the Patriarchy' vest was giving what it was supposed to give and whether or not AOC's ‘Tax the Rich' dress was performative. We read from Luna Matatas' Instagram post about her copyrighted phrase ‘Peg the Patriarchy'.  Last week, Mac Miller's estate re-released a single off his 2014 mixtape ‘Faces'. Three years after his untimely death of an accidental drug overdose, it seems fans are still lapping up his music. This sparked a discussion into whether posthumous album releases are ethical. We reference Tupac Shakur's haunting 2012 Coachella hologram and the exploitation of Amy Winehouse (even after her death). In this segment, we read from a 2012 MTV article by James Montgomery titled ‘Tupac's Coachella Hologram and the Rise of the Not-So Live Revue' and ‘When I'm Gone: Is it Ethical to Release Music by Deceased Artists?' by Dean Van Nguyen for The Face magazine. Maggie recommends a comedy murder mystery series starring Selena Gomez called ‘Only Murders in the Building' available on Disney+ while Jas recommends a podcast called ‘9/12'. It's an audio documentary on how 9/11 the day became 9/11 the idea. Katie Zhou created our fab cover art and India Raine is our wonderful producer and composer of our jingle. West Coast music is in rude health according to Dean Van Nguyen. Artists like Kamasi Washington, Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar are releasing fresh and vital albums packed with musical experimentation and a keen social conscience. Dean joins host Laurence Mackin and guests, chief theatre critic with the Irish Times Peter Crawley and journalist Zara Hedderman to discuss the musical heritage and sonic appeal of that "LA sound", and how these works have breathed new life into contemporary jazz and hip-hop. Waiting for Godot is a play Peter Crawley knows well - too well. New productions of Beckett's absurdist play pop up on a regular basis. Having thought the play had no more mystery or revelations to offer, Peter "stumbled out in disbelief" at the impact of Druid Theatre's latest production of Godot at the Galway International Arts Festival. Describing it as "exceptional and miraculous", he endeavours to explain to the podcast why it had such a profound effect on him. And finally, the successful bid for European Capital of Culture 2020 has gone to Galway. Gemma Tipton joins us on the line from Galway to discuss the "joy and tears" and no small amount of excitement that this announcement has brought to the city.
