Annie Hartnett discusses the inspiration behind her quirky road trip novel The Road to Tender Hearts and why she breaks all the rules in writing her stories. Annie Hartnett joins me to discuss her latest bestselling novel, The Road to Tender Hearts, and the inspiration behind this road trip story. We explore the heartfelt and humorous moments that showcase a wonderfully quirky found family, which even includes a psychic cat.She also shares the surprising real-life inspirations for her unforgettable characters and explains how literary mischief is woven into their worlds. In this quirky conversation, Annie and I discuss: Why Annie made a death-predicting cat named Pancakes the emotional engine of the novel—and how a real-life nursing home cat named Oscar inspired this unforgettable character. How playing with point of view and narrator's voice keeps her writing fresh, and why she's unconcerned with grammar "rules."How Annie's own cross-country trip in her twenties helped shape the emotional core of this incredible road trip story.BONUS BOOK LIST: This week, I'm sharing an accompanying book list of 29 books about road trips, including new releases and backlist titles, that speak to the ripple effects of substance use across families and generations.Meet Annie HartnettAnnie Hartnett is the author of Unlikely Animals, which won the Julia Ward Howe Prize for fiction and was longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is also theauthor of Rabbit Cake, a finalist for the New England Book Award and a Kirkus Reviews best book of the year. Hartnett has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the MacDowell Colony, the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and the Associates of the Boston Public Library. Along with writer Tessa Fontaine, she co-runs the Accountability Workshops for writers, helping them commit to routines and embrace the long, slow, joyful, terrible process of doing the work. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and dog.Mentioned in this episode:Browse the 2025 MomAdvice Summer Reading Guide (with ads) or download the 48-page reading guide  ($7) to support our show. The conversation covers how messages and behaviors from parents and grandparents can affect a person's stress levels and reactions, even if the person didn't directly experience the trauma themselves. Welcome back to the kitchen table. One of our deepest prayers is that our children walk through life with tender hearts. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:14-15 about the importance of forgiveness.   We seek God's guidance to help our children maintain a tender heart, free from bitterness and anger. Life's challenges can often leave wounds that make it easy for their hearts to harden, not just towards others, but even towards God. When our children experience wounds, we pray that they bring these hurts to God. We want to teach them that it's okay to feel pain and to question, but it's essential to walk through these emotions with God. We ask God to help our children walk with tender hearts, to embrace and extend forgiveness, and to bring their wounds to him for healing. “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” — Matthew 10:16 Officer Clayton grew up on the South Side of Chicago and was inspired to become a police officer to serve his community. He has arrested hardened criminals in life-threatening situations. He can be tough skinned and all business in situations where he needs to be. He also comes by Roseland Christian Ministries to bring bicycles for children, tickets to the circus, and school supplies for kids when the school year starts. He is both tough and tender. He is strong-willed and sensitive to the needs of others. I am inspired by people who are a synthesis of gifts that we don't normally attribute together. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered a sermon on this topic, titled, “Tough Minds and Tender Hearts.” This sermon is a gift to anyone who may feel like a square peg in a round hole at times. Following Jesus requires that we not give into societal expectations if they diminish the fullness of who God made us to be. We have in us, as children of God, the capacity to be both as shrewd as a serpent and as innocent as a dove, tough and tender, creative and organized, thoughtful and action oriented. In what ways are you a synthesis of attributes that may seem like contradictions but come together to form you? Lord, bring together all the traits that make us who we are, even those that can seem contradictory. Make us whole by the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Host Mary Mancini sits down with poet and artist Christine Hall.  Christine was raised in a trailer at the edge of the Adirondacks by troubadours and cultist pornographers. Inculcated with American mythology—tool girl calendars, bible stories, science fiction—she built on this education while hitching across the continent. Before she set off on her travels she was a teenager at Lucy's trying to find her way out of a difficult and painful childhood. Christine found Lucy's to be a safe space and her story has a happy ending, but the safety she found inside didn't always prevent her from acting out her trauma in dangerous and self-destructive ways on the outside. Now at home in the Nashville arts community, Christine hosts the Poetry in the Brew open mic. Her work has appeared in Out & About Nashville, several anthologies including Sinew (April Gloaming Publishing, 2021), Be About It zine, on MTA buses, and on stages with the Yoni Pearl Monologues, Cabaret Noir Collective, TSU, Third Man Records, and OZ Arts.  This episode comes with a content warning. In today's conversation with renowned grief expert and author, David Kessler, we explore the concept of “acceptance” and what it really means. No stranger to grief, David lost his son to addiction in 2016. He candidly talks about how to cope with feelings of shame and guilt that can accompany this type of loss. We discuss feeling pressure to create purpose from pain and pick David's brains about what finding meaning in loss actually looks like. Spoiler alert – it's much simpler than you think. He also breaks down some of the misconceptions surrounding the ‘Five Stages of Grief'. Having co-authored books with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, who came up with the model, it's fair to say he's an expert on the theory. Other topics we cover are:How to cope when you're grieving differently from othersComplicated grief How to manage feelings of grief and guiltHow we grieve differently when we had an estranged relationship with the person who diedThe concept of light and dark in grief …and we also get a bit of ‘signs' chat in, which we love!We hope you enjoy this honest and enlightening conversation as much as we did.Links Buy David's book Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief here.Find out more about David's ‘Tender Hearts' course here.Connect with usGrief is the price we pay for love, but it can be lonely.
