In this episode of She Who Dares Wins, Michelle sits down with Anna, Arts Director at Sunny Bank Mills, to explore what it really means to dare in your career and life. From experimental theatre and large-scale cultural production at Leeds 2023, to community-focused curation in a former textile mill, Anna shares how she stepped off the traditional career ladder to build a lifestyle job that actually fits her values. They discuss the WoW Barn project – a 24‑hour build with 300 women and non-binary people – the realities of work in the arts, the tension between ambition and burnout, and the courage it takes to be radically honest about what you really want, including the prospect of starting a family.Key TakeawaysDaring can mean changing direction, not just climbing higherAnna talks about leaving a “successful” trajectory in large-scale cultural events when she realised the next logical steps (EP, Director of Programmes) didn't align with the life she wanted. The WoW Barn: women, non-binary people and agency in constructionThe 24-hour timber build with 300 women and non-binary people challenged ideas about who construction is “for” and gave many participants their first experience of building and tools – with powerful confidence and identity shifts.Redefining what an art gallery can beAt Sunny Bank Mills, Anna focuses on accessibility and community:A gallery on a village high street, not just in a city centreA zine library and touchable pieces to break down shame and intimidationWelcoming honest feedback from locals who feel real ownership of the spaceCurating with integrity (not just what sells)As Arts Director of a commercial gallery, Anna balances:Work that's easy to sell (e.g. Yorkshire landscapes)With pieces that expand horizons, communicate lived experience, and make people thinkShe wants to stand beside every work and confidently say why it's on the wall.Lifestyle job vs endless growthMoving from freelancing and high-intensity projects to a family-run, community-rooted site has shifted Anna's view of success:One “hat” instead of sixDaily connection with artists, locals, and a historic site of makingSpace to prioritise work–life balance over constant “more, bigger, faster”.Honesty about motherhood and identityAnna shares two “dares” for herself:Returning to horse riding as a hobbySeriously considering starting a familyShe talks openly about fears around losing identity, career impact, and inherited anxieties many career-driven women feel.A dare for other womenAnna's challenge:Be radically honest with yourself.Don't just follow the trajectory you think you should be on – ask if it's really serving you and whether it's genuinely what you want.Timestamps [0:00] – Intro: Anna's background in theatre, experimental live art & producing[0:17]–[7:55] – Leeds, European Capital of Culture bid & the birth of Leeds 2023[7:55]–[13:47] – The WoW Barn: 24-hour build, women in construction, empowerment stories[13:47]–[20:12] – Leaving Leeds 2023 & landing the Arts Director role at Sunny Bank Mills[20:12]–[30:37] – Making art accessible: village gallery, community feedback, zine library, touching the art[30:37]–[43:19] – What it really means to curate: taste vs sales, contemporary craft, and the “she's a keeper” piece[43:19]–[49:44] – Lifestyle careers, work–life balance, family-run business culture, unlearning toxic work patterns[49:44]–[58:35] – Daring to ride horses again, thinking about starting a family, and identity as a career-driven woman[58:35]–end – Anna's dare to listeners: radical honesty about the paths you're onJoin Dare Club now: https://stan.store/shewhodareswinsShop she who dares wins: www.shewhodareswins.com Hosted on Acast. In this EUVC Live at GoWest episode, Olivier Tonneau, Founding Partner Quantonation, Jeppe Høier, Co-Host at EUVC Corporate, Paolo Pio, Co-founder and General Partner at Exceptional Ventures, Fergus Bell, Founder and Managing Partner at The Players Fund, and Prashant Agarwal, Chairman and Managing Director at Scandian xplore one defining question:How does Europe turn frontier innovation into global scale?Across quantum, corporate capital, longevity, and sport, the same pattern emerges: Europe doesn't lack talent or research. It lacks the capital and market architecture required to scale strategic industries fast enough to stay independent.Olivier opens with Europe's quantum paradox. Europe supplies a meaningful share of deployed quantum computers globally, with strong startup and research clusters across the Nordics, France, Germany, and the UK. The science is world-class — but the financing is breaking. Over the last 12 months, the funding ratio between Europe and the US has shifted from roughly 1:2 to nearly 1:7, accelerating US scale-up, public listings, and acquisition pressure. Europe has 12–24 months to respond — not to avoid failure, but to avoid becoming the lab while others become the market.Jeppe shifts the lens to corporates. Corporate venture capital represents roughly 25% of global VC volume, yet the average lifespan of a CVC unit is only 3.7 years. His argument is blunt: most corporates launch venture arms believing they are “doing VC,” when they are actually building a strategic instrument without the operating system required to sustain it. Without durable governance — and a clear Build, Buy, Partner model — corporate venture becomes fragile instead of strategic.Paolo reframes health and longevity as deep tech moving at software speed. Genome sequencing has collapsed from decades to hours. mRNA proved that biology timelines can compress dramatically. With AI now embedded in diagnostics and discovery, health is entering an exponential era — and venture is being pulled with it.The session closes with a thesis most investors still underestimate. Fergus and Prashant argue sport is no longer entertainment — it is venture infrastructure. Athletes and rights holders are becoming capital allocators and distribution rails. Elite sport has evolved into a real-world deployment environment for deep tech, health tech, AI, and performance systems — where validation happens under pressure and at global scale. The takeaway across all five perspectives is clear:Europe invents early. But scale requires architecture.Late-stage capital depth.Liquidity.Corporate integration.Coordination.What's covered:00:30 Europe's scale question — five lenses on one problem02:00 Quantum's paradox — Europe leads in science, not in financing05:00 The 1:7 funding gap — why the next 12–24 months matter07:00 What Europe can do — capital architecture, procurement, scale funds11:30 Corporate venture — 25% of global VC, but structurally fragile13:30 Why CVCs fail — the 3-year vs 6-year test and governance gaps16:30 Longevity as deep tech — health moving at software speed21:30 AI in health — diagnostics, discovery, and exponential biology27:30 Sport as venture infrastructure — athletes and rights holders as rails34:30 Deep tech in sport — validation, performance systems, adoption under pressure40:00 Final takeaway — Europe has innovation; it needs scale architecture

Valerie Urbain, CEO of Euroclear, joins Hiten Patel and Nikolai Dienerowitz to discuss Euroclear's role as a foundational global financial market infrastructure and the company's strategic priorities. Valerie opened up about her journey from Senegal to her role as Euroclear's CEO, emphasizing how culture, human capital development, diversity, and inclusion were at the core of her leadership philosophy and the organization's ability to innovate responsibly. The conversation touched upon the importance of trust and interoperability in traditional and digital markets, the need to convert European savers into investors to finance growth and scale-ups, balanced and nuanced regulation, cautious but active engagement with distributed ledger technology (DLT) and digital assets, and practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve productivity and client services.Key topics include:Euroclear's role and scale: As a global financial market infrastructure, Euroclear manages securities settlement and safekeeping (including equities, bonds, funds, ETFs), acting as a digital notary and a connector between issuers and investors. Euroclear links Europe to more than 45 markets, settles about the equivalent of the world's GDP each month, and safekeeps over €41 trillion in assets. Valerie's leadership formation: Raised across African countries, Valerie had an early exposure to “being different,” and gained autonomy when she moved to Europe at the age of 16. Her career spans client-facing roles, banking, and then progressing through commercial, product and general management positions and a formative five-year stint as head of HR, which later shaped her enterprise-wide people perspective. European capital markets: Valerie argues Europe must convert savers into investors to fund startups, scale-ups, and large financing needs, with Euroclear lowering costs through scale, supporting savings and investment union efforts, and enhancing market accessibility. Digital assets and DLT: Euroclear has piloted DLT-based issuance with reputable issuers, but volumes remain small. Scaling requires broad market participation and interoperability between legacy and digital systems.AI adoption: Euroclear has widely deployed Microsoft Copilot and uses AI to review end-to-end processes for productivity gains. Valerie shares an early client-facing use case where AI is used to predictively identify likely unmatched trades ahead of T+1 settlement. To embed ethics and governance into AI adoption, Euroclear hired a professional with a background in philosophy. Interoperability and trust as strategic assets: In a fragmented/geopolitical world, Euroclear positions itself as an interoperability glue between markets and traditional and digital assets, with a core strength being its ability to connect liquidity pools and enable collateral mobility. Valerie talks about trust as a scarce and crucial commodity and highlights Euroclear's commitment to upholding that, helped by their scale and rules-based operations. This episode is part of Innovators' Exchange, a series that explores the financial infrastructure and technology landscape. Tune in for a captivating exploration of key themes and opportunities for both professionals and retail investors, touching on AI's transformative potential in financial markets. In this episode of “Kimberly's Italy,” co-hosts Kimberly Holcombe and Tommaso Il Favoloso take listeners on a journey through the lesser-known yet captivating regions of Puglia, Basilicata, and Campania, uncovering their unique cultural and geographical features. Puglia: Geography and Features: Nestled between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, Puglia is known for its unique terra rosa soil, abundant olive trees, and renowned wines such as Primitivo and Negroamaro. Cuisine and Climate: The region boasts a vegetable-centric cuisine, diverse climate, and provides a refreshing alternative to the summer heat of Rome. Key Destinations: Highlights include the Gargano promontory, Bari, Ostuni, Lecce, and Santa Maria de Leuca. The iconic trulli houses are now popular accommodations. Basilicata: Historical Context and Terrain: Famous for its mountainous landscape, Basilicata has undergone several name changes, including Lucania under Mussolini. Cultural Highlights: Matera, recognized as a European Capital of Culture in 2019, is famed for its unique sassi cave dwellings. Visitor Tips: Despite lacking an airport, the region offers warm welcomes in its small villages. Potenza is noted for its narrow roads and parking challenges, while Maratea charms visitors with its scenic appeal. Local Wines and Cuisine: The region's wines, Malantrina and Aglianco, pair excellently with local meats and bread. Campania: Cultural Hub: Known for its stunning coastline, Campania is also home to Napoli, the birthplace of pizza and a gateway to Capri, Ischia, Procida, and the Amalfi Coast. Attractions and Planning: Notable sites include the Reggia di Caserta, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. The Amalfi Coast, with its picturesque villages such as Positano and Amalfi, requires careful planning to navigate high prices and crowds. Climate and History: The region benefits from a sunny climate, and south of Salerno you can visit the ancient ruins in Paestum. Coastal Challenges: The islands are full of rocky shores which make for somewhat challenging entries for non-local swimmers! Hello our wobbly hospital trolleys, and welcome to Episode 110 of BGC. It's a welcome back to Óran, fresh from his travels to the nearby hospital, all of 5 minutes away. Yes, it seems Óran is maintaining his hobby of having near death experiences every few years, much to Clodagh's distress. But anyway, all is good now and he is back steering the HMS BGC directly into a cliff! Poor Jan is in bed and on the tablets again as he can't believe the US presidential election result, but then again neither can Clodagh, Óran, or most of the world for that matter. Our guest this week is Fanny Bui. Fanny is here to chat about a fantastic blind and visually impaired event happening in Chemnitz, Germany next year. Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture 2025. The organising team are blind people who live in Chemnitz who want to introduce you to their city. You can stay in a blind host family, who will guide from arrival to departure. You really don't need to bring a sighted person if you don't want to – you know how pesky they can be! The program includes a sound and touch city tour, a visit to the museum of archaeology, a visit to the blind school and training centre. There is also an option of a small hike in the nearby forest, climbing, or tandem biking. You can also try ‘Showdown' (we don't know – it's some kind of game), and the highlight of the weekend will be a concert organised by the ‘Low Vision Charts'. For more details visit: tinyurl.com/BGCchemnitz or email info@connectingblind.org. In TV Corner we are talking about two shows on Netflix: ‘The Lincoln Lawyer season 3' and season 2 of ‘The Diplomat'. Check them out. Clodagh has an email from Laurent, who writes from Belgium asking about the pros and cons of travelling through Europe as a blind individual. If any of you lovely listeners would like to share your positive and negative European travel experiences, you know who to email – Ghostbu… no, blindguyschat@gmail.com. It will help us plan our holidays for next year – keep the stories coming! So, pull off that oxygen mask, don't worry about your collapsed lung, and throw caution to the wind as you walk up the hospital corridor listening to BGC, forgetting that your rear end is fully exposed for all to admire!! RSI was there to explore the ways Trenčín is working to become a more sustainable community ahead of the festivities in 2026. In the second half of the show we stay in Trenčín to celebrate the first anniversary of the reopening of the Hviezda cultural center. On a rainy September weekend, the cultural center offered a variety activities for visitors, including concerts and exhibitions. There we spoke with the center's director, visitors, and performers about the importance of this and other cultural centers across Slovakia.

Tune in to The Irish Podcast as Jane and Cormac navigate a bed bug infestation, offering both a cautionary tale and practical advice for anyone facing similar challenges. In this gripping episode, Jane and Cormac share how they initially discovered bed bugs, mistaking them for harmless critters until a closer examination revealed the truth. From finding them predominantly in one room of their apartment to setting up makeshift traps to monitor their activity, every detail of their discovery sends shivers down the spine. But the horrors didn't end there. Armed with newfound knowledge about the life cycle and habits of bedbugs, the couple embarked on their first extermination attempt. They spared no expense, throwing out bed frames, mattresses, and even wicker furniture, and calling in the highest-rated fumigator in Florence. However, as they soon discovered, battling bed bugs is no easy feat, and mistakes were made along the way. Learn from Jane and Cormac's missteps as they candidly discuss the errors they made during their de-infestation attempts, from moving their sleeping arrangements to underestimating the extent of the infestation. They share valuable insights into what needs to be thrown out and what could have been saved, providing listeners with crucial information and products for their own bed bug battles. This episode also deals with topics of mental health and PTSD. In the midst of their bedbug saga, Jane and Cormac endured two more exterminations, each one accompanied by a glimmer of hope that the nightmare would finally be over. However, as the weeks dragged on and the pests persisted, they began to entertain the idea of a drastic solution: moving. Through diligent investigation and communication with neighbours, they uncovered that the infestation was stemming from another area of the building entirely. Their journey serves as a stark reminder that sometimes, the true source of a problem may lie beyond what meets the eye, emphasising the importance of thoroughness and perseverance in overcoming adversity. They say that those who can do and those who can't teach. But “they” don't seem to have ever met a proper teacher. In honor of the Norwegian town of Bodø's recognition as a 2024 European Capital of Culture, we dive into Bodø's most famous artist, Adelsteen Normann, the teacher you've never heard of, the picture-postcard modernist who introduced us to the scream that is Edvard Munch, and, eclipsed though he may have been, the painter who illuminated both the town he loved and the students he nurtured with the warmth of a sun that never sets. This episode was produced in partnership with Bodø2024: European Capital of Culture.
