In this ‘In Conversation' event, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester and Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, discuss their new book, Head North, which sets out a vision for a more balanced and inclusive future for the UK. Drawing on their experiences in Westminster and local government, the Mayors reflect on the challenges of centralised decision-making, the impact of devolution, and the shortcomings of successive ‘levelling up' policies. With reference to their ten-point plan for reform, the discussion explores how shifting power away from Westminster could contribute to a more equitable distribution of opportunity and prosperity across the UK. Abouts the Speakers: Andy Burnham was first elected as Mayor of Greater Manchester in May 2017, re-elected for a second term in May 2021, and again for a third term in May 2024. Mr Burham's priorities for his third term include continuing to build a London-style integrated transport system, ending the housing crisis by 2038, offering a new technical education pathway as an alternative to university, and creating a new Live Well service. Before being elected Mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr Burnham was MP for Leigh from 2001. In government, he has held Ministerial positions at the Home Office, Department of Health and the Treasury. In 2008, he became Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, before returning to Health as Secretary of State in 2009. In opposition, Andy has served as Shadow Education Secretary, Shadow Health Secretary, and Shadow Home Secretary. Steve Rotheram began his political career when he was elected to serve as a councillor in 2002, representing Fazakerley ward on Liverpool City Council and held the ceremonial title of Lord Mayor of Liverpool through the city's European Capital of Culture year in 2008. In 2010, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Liverpool Walton constituency. While in Westminster, he led campaigns for justice for the Hillsborough families; in support of blacklisted workers; for compensation for those suffering from mesothelioma and asbestosis; and to change the law on the use of old tyres on buses and coaches. In 2017, Mr Rotheram was elected as the first ever Liverpool City Region Mayor, representing 1.6m people across the boroughs of Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral and was subsequently re-elected in 2021. In 2024, he was elected for a third term as Mayor. Mayor Rotheram has pledged to return to council housebuilding at scale, to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) into the region, to build three new train stations, and to launch a free pilot of artificial intelligence (AI) in local schools. He has also revised the region's net zero target to 2035 – the most ambitious target for a city region in the country.

Helfried Carl in conversation with Erik Jones HOW TO PREPARE THE EU FOR THE PERFECT STORM?The New European Commission FACING TRUMP, PUTIN and the Multi-Crisis   True to the slow pace of European decision making, the new European Commission under its President Ursula von der Leyen will take office half a year after the elections to the European Parliament. The challenges for the new Commission are obvious: the war in Ukraine is still raging, the European economy is comparatively weak and the European Green Deal is an immense challenge. Europe has little or no influence on the ongoing war in the Middle East. In addition, on November 5, 2024, Donald Trump was elected the 47th US president after a triumphant election victory – this time with an even more radical agenda than during his first term. His friends in the EU, like Hungary's Prime Minister Orbán and his right-wing allies, will try to block any movements towards greater foreign policy cohesion towards his administration, but also that of Putin's Russia. Europe is facing a crucial test. How can it manage to protect its interests independently and develop its own defense policy in the face of US disengagement? Will the democratic forces prevail? And what role does the EU Commission play in this? Prof. Erik Jones is Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute and Member of the Scientific Committee of the Institute's renowned annual State of the Union Conference.  He has published extensively on topics related to European politics, with a special focus on political economy. He is co-editor of the Journal Government & Opposition. His commentary has appeared in the Financial Times, the New York Times, and other major newspapers and magazines across Europe and North America. Helfried Carl, diplomat, since 2019 partner of the Innovation in Politics Institute in Vienna and founder of the European Capital of Democracy initiative. From 2014-2019 he served as Austria's Ambassador to the Slovak Republic. From 2008-2014, he was Chief of Cabinet and foreign policy advisor to the late President of the Austrian Parliament (National Council), Barbara Prammer.

Hello our wobbly hospital trolleys, and welcome to Episode 110 of BGC. It's a welcome back to Óran, fresh from his travels to the nearby hospital, all of 5 minutes away. Yes, it seems Óran is maintaining his hobby of having near death experiences every few years, much to Clodagh's distress. But anyway, all is good now and he is back steering the HMS BGC directly into a cliff! Poor Jan is in bed and on the tablets again as he can't believe the US presidential election result, but then again neither can Clodagh, Óran, or most of the world for that matter. Our guest this week is Fanny Bui. Fanny is here to chat about a fantastic blind and visually impaired event happening in Chemnitz, Germany next year. Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture 2025. The organising team are blind people who live in Chemnitz who want to introduce you to their city. You can stay in a blind host family, who will guide from arrival to departure. You really don't need to bring a sighted person if you don't want to – you know how pesky they can be! The program includes a sound and touch city tour, a visit to the museum of archaeology, a visit to the blind school and training centre. There is also an option of a small hike in the nearby forest, climbing, or tandem biking. You can also try ‘Showdown' (we don't know – it's some kind of game), and the highlight of the weekend will be a concert organised by the ‘Low Vision Charts'. For more details visit: tinyurl.com/BGCchemnitz or email info@connectingblind.org. In TV Corner we are talking about two shows on Netflix: ‘The Lincoln Lawyer season 3' and season 2 of ‘The Diplomat'. Check them out. Clodagh has an email from Laurent, who writes from Belgium asking about the pros and cons of travelling through Europe as a blind individual. If any of you lovely listeners would like to share your positive and negative European travel experiences, you know who to email – Ghostbu… no, blindguyschat@gmail.com. It will help us plan our holidays for next year – keep the stories coming! So, pull off that oxygen mask, don't worry about your collapsed lung, and throw caution to the wind as you walk up the hospital corridor listening to BGC, forgetting that your rear end is fully exposed for all to admire!! Tune in to The Irish Podcast as Jane and Cormac navigate a bed bug infestation, offering both a cautionary tale and practical advice for anyone facing similar challenges. In this gripping episode, Jane and Cormac share how they initially discovered bed bugs, mistaking them for harmless critters until a closer examination revealed the truth. From finding them predominantly in one room of their apartment to setting up makeshift traps to monitor their activity, every detail of their discovery sends shivers down the spine. But the horrors didn't end there. Armed with newfound knowledge about the life cycle and habits of bedbugs, the couple embarked on their first extermination attempt. They spared no expense, throwing out bed frames, mattresses, and even wicker furniture, and calling in the highest-rated fumigator in Florence. However, as they soon discovered, battling bed bugs is no easy feat, and mistakes were made along the way. Learn from Jane and Cormac's missteps as they candidly discuss the errors they made during their de-infestation attempts, from moving their sleeping arrangements to underestimating the extent of the infestation. They share valuable insights into what needs to be thrown out and what could have been saved, providing listeners with crucial information and products for their own bed bug battles. This episode also deals with topics of mental health and PTSD. In the midst of their bedbug saga, Jane and Cormac endured two more exterminations, each one accompanied by a glimmer of hope that the nightmare would finally be over. However, as the weeks dragged on and the pests persisted, they began to entertain the idea of a drastic solution: moving. Through diligent investigation and communication with neighbours, they uncovered that the infestation was stemming from another area of the building entirely. Their journey serves as a stark reminder that sometimes, the true source of a problem may lie beyond what meets the eye, emphasising the importance of thoroughness and perseverance in overcoming adversity. This community is open to all who want to be involved. Threatened from within and outside by the rise of partisan hyper-polarization, authoritarian buy-in, disinformation and electoral interference, European democracy is under attack on all sides. As Europe needs to address citizens' sense of disenfranchisement, pathways to renewal are necessary. For the Democratic Odyssey consortium, part of the solution lies in creating a standing European People's Assembly that will become a core part of the institutional landscape of the European Union, made of citizens selected by lot, serving on a rotating basis. This project comes at an opportune moment. In the past five years, in Europe, there have been ten national assemblies and around 70 local assemblies on the topic of climate change alone. The EU itself took a huge leap with the Conference on the Future of Europe which integrated transnational, multi-lingual, sortition-based deliberation into the policy making process. The Conference planted a seed which the Democratic Odyssey wants to make flourish. As James Mackay, the project's coordinator, declared in a recent interview with European Alternatives: “we are not aiming at making a ‘perfect' assembly (whatever that would even mean). Our hope is more modest: to offer a “proof of concept” that, in the window between the EP elections but before the new Commissions convenes, can bring grassroots and institutional actors together to consider how citizens' participation can be institutionalized in the longer term.” source

They say that those who can do and those who can't teach. But “they” don't seem to have ever met a proper teacher. In honor of the Norwegian town of Bodø's recognition as a 2024 European Capital of Culture, we dive into Bodø's most famous artist, Adelsteen Normann, the teacher you've never heard of, the picture-postcard modernist who introduced us to the scream that is Edvard Munch, and, eclipsed though he may have been, the painter who illuminated both the town he loved and the students he nurtured with the warmth of a sun that never sets.
