Back during our break to cover the DIGIMON MOVIE! This amalgamation of 3 different ova's smashed together with some tenuous connective tissue is special to fans. But does it hold up?!
While many kids our age orbited around Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh in the late 90's/early 2000's, a small subset of children—our host Alex included—built their childhood personas around Digimon, starting with 1999's Digimon Adventure and the strange "film" released a year later to cap off the series. And as Alex introduces the show and draws his line in the sand, he braces himself for a nearly relentless onslaught of criticism from the rest of the gang, Iris and Marcus especially. Now let me make this clear: we love Alex on this podcast. He is a gem of a human being. But if this show's generally poor animation, subpar English dub voice acting, wild pacing, disappointing final villains, and utterly baffling collection of Digimon weren't enough, Alex caps this episode off with one of the Trivia Corners of all time. While Digimon Adventure has a few—a few—redeeming qualities, including some satisfying narrative and character moments, I think we on the Couch can all agree that this one is going the way of Aladdin 3. Content warning: the Digi-Rap, strong language.
Good morning, afternoon, and evening! Gibby is trapped somewhere in cyberspace, so it's up to Kaylie and Bo to rescue him! Or, y'know, they could watch a terrible, yet awesome, kids movie from the turn of the millennium. It's Digimon: The Movie! If you ever wondered what Pokemon would be like if you had a 150% increase in guns and belts, this is the perfect movie for you. Also included: complaining about Nintendo but being tempted to buy an overpriced console because you can play as a cow...and so much more!

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to talk about the 25th anniversary of Digimon Adventure. Digimon Adventure is the first anime series based on the Digital Monster virtual pet toy, which itself is a spinoff of Tamagotchi. It first aired in Japan on March 7, 1999, with an English dub debuting on Fox Kids later that year. The series ran for 54 episodes, ending in 2000. Digimon Adventure follows the eight DigiDestined children who team up with their Digimon (short for Digital Monsters) to save the Digital World. The DigiDestined are Tai (Joshua Seth), Matt (Michael Reisz), Sora (Colleen O'Shaughnessey), Izzy (Mona Marshall), Mimi (Philece Sampler), Joe (Michael Lindsey), T.K. (Wendee Lee) and Kari (Lara Jill Miller). Digimon Adventure launched the Digimon anime franchise, which includes the direct sequel Digimon Adventure 02. In North America, Saban Entertainment combined the two short films from the first series and one from the second to create Digimon: The Movie. A remake of Digimon Adventure aired from 2020 to 2021. Aaron and Josh discuss their relationship with Digimon before going into the show's plot, characters, animation, and monster designs. They also discuss the inevitable comparisons to Pokémon and the legacy of the Digimon franchise. As the month of 'Ani-May' draws to a close. we asked the Patreons to pick from two Mamoru Hosoda movies, and this one won by a landslide (although it is only technically two-thirds a Hosada film...) Paul, as you may know, is a big fan of Pokémon - and Digimon is another favourite monster franchise he grew up with and still embraces to this day. So this episode has Sophie attempt to experience his childhood, and try to figure out what is going on in this 3 part American mash-up in Digimon: The Movie! As part of the conversation, we talk about Angela Anaconda, what other movies famously featured the All Star song by Smash Mouth, and Paul tries his best to explain the differences/mechanics Digimon offers as Sophie makes A LOT of Pokémon comparisons! ------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to follow us on social media in the links below, and let us know your thoughts and recommendations for the future! instagram.com/sp_filmviewers twitter.com/SP_Filmviewers letterboxd.com/SP_Filmviewers Rating and reviewing the show is a great help too! Since Ghost Game had a week off in its release schedule, we watched Digimon: the Movie, and thoroughly lost our minds. Are any of the jokes good? Does the plot make sense? Why is this movie actually three movies? Will you retain your sense of self throughout the full runtime? All these answers... and more?? Episode 173. Alan and Ignacio are on the show this week to talk about The Digimon Movie. We watched the dubbed American release from the year 2000, and the three original Japanese mini-movies that were edited together to make this American version. We see the digidestined kids throughout their young lives as they encounter their first Digimon egg, try to stop a Digimon virus from destroying the internet and setting off nuclear bombs, and help an American boy whose own Digimon has turned to the dark side. The Whatnauts present The Review Show, a weekly book club style podcast for all sorts of pop culture. We cover a variety of genres and mediums — movies, TV shows, comics, anime, manga, audio dramas — picking out a specific piece of entertainment that we can cover in a week's time. Every episode, your intrepid co-hosts Kyle and Melissa dive into the media of the week (with a spoiler warning!), give recommendations, and take turns pitching the next topic. For one episode a month, we check in with continuing coverage on a longer title, like a full TV series or comics run, and follow it all the way to the end. Join us for fun discussions on a wild variety of entertainment you should know!Check out our other podcasts here, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's our 3rd installment in killer children's movie soundtracks and of course we have back our soundtrack aficionados, Griffin and Alex Woodchicken to break down another time capsule of a soundtrack, designed perfectly for a child growing up in the 90s. That's right, it's possibly the greatest(?) children's soundtrack ever conceived by corporate America: the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack. Where the Transformers: the Movie soundtrack captured the essence of 80s power/hair metal and the Jetsons: the Movie soundtrack captured 80s electronic/pop, the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack captured a real amalgamation of popular 90s genres, from rap to surf rock to ska to rap/pop/rock(?), all interlaced with sick scratches on the turntables. It somehow has everything that the 90s was at the turn of the millennium without anything feeling out of place. It's like the Reese's of children's soundtracks. Just to name a few flavors, we have Barenaked Ladies, Smashmouth, and Fatboy Slim (and a truly epic “Digi-Rap”) on the front half of the album, and then Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Less Than Jake on the back half. Not to mention the 90s reimagining of 80s pop hit “Kids In America” that was hastily made to market directly to a young American audience (thematically having little to nothing to do with the movie, but can't lie, song was dope). Get ready to hear us at our absolute nerdiest, as Brad, Jon, Jake, Griff, and Alex discuss Digimon in more depth than anyone asked.
