(Spoiler Section Length - 18min 51sec) We've got another Mamoru Hosoda film on our hands, and just like all his other movies, we definitely never cried while watching or discussing it. This one touches on some very modern concerns, such as identity and perception in the digital age, while also using trappings from an older tale, Beauty and the Beast. The film also uses multiple animation styles, most prominently traditional animation and CGI. Does it all work together to make another engrossing Hosoda classic? Or does this one end up less than the sum of its parts? Listen to find out! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howsitholdup/support
Filme, Filme, Filme. Dafür kamen aber die beiden Sequel-Movies "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out" und "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid" in die deutsche Kinos.
(Spoiler Section Length - 22min 50sec) Mamoru Hosoda is back, and this time, like his previous Digimon films, he's working on a previously existing series, rather than his own original work. One Piece is a long-running series with many, many movies under its belt, both before and after this, and a legacy stretching over 25 years. Its creator is of course the inimitable Eiichiro Oda, whose sense of whimsy, adventure and iconic art style has won hearts and minds the world over. Hosoda, meanwhile, has also built a reputation upon strong storytelling and an immediately recognizable visual style. When two titans meet, what is the result, and ultimately, is it any good? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howsitholdup/support

PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! Melanie joins Melvin to discuss Belle, Mamoru Hosoda's latest anime feature that combines real-life heart with the wonder of cyber-space! How well does he balance these ideas, and are we familiar with Hosoda's filmography? Tune in to hear that and more! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 38-minutes discussing our history with Anime, what we like and dislike about the style, and where we currently stand as purveyors of the medium (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Mamoru Hosoda clearly has a fascination with the duality between the real-world and digital-world as observed through his filmography (several Digimon movies, Summer Wars, Belle).Melanie connected with the way in which Suzu found her voice throughout the story's progression. Both Melvin and Melanie enjoyed most of the music, specifically the first song.Melvin saw one of Mamoru Hosoda's previous narrative successes, Wolf Children, and seriously disliked the movie. He routinely gets hate-mail for his scathing review left on MyAnimeList. Some problems he remembers from Wolf Children he also observed in Belle.Belle has many duality motifs including the imagery of a whale, a sea-creature dependent on air, or the difference between online and offline personalities.Belle is comprised of three narrative beats; digital world and concerts, slice-of-life, and the beauty and the beast. How you connect with each of these aspects will greatly impact your enjoyment of the film.Getting into the controversial twist that more-or-less co-opts the movie during its third act. Both Melanie and Melvin take issue with the severe lack of resolution presented by the introduction of Belle's twist, apart from the fact it's also comparatively uncomfortable. There's this expectation online that people have a right to information or knowledge regardless of boundaries or privacy. Melvin appreciated Belle's passive critique against this idea.Melvin and Melanie go full script-doctor because we're a podcast and that's what podcasts do.Recommendations:Spriggan (1998) (Movie)Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks!

Tonight on GeekNights, we review Mamoru Hosoda's Belle. A beautiful film that deals with the disconnect (or the lack thereof) between the online and the real, we have previously reviewed Hosoda's Mirai, The Boy and the Beast, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, and One Piece 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. In the news, Amazon has ruined Comixology, Hayao Miyazaki's Shuna's Journey is being released in the US, and legendary mecha sesigner Kazutaka Miyatake needs help after suffering a tragic loss. In breaking and dire news, the governor of Texas has criminalized Trans children in a move that can be described as nothing less than openly fascist.

'Belle' is coming next month! so to get into the spirit, let's watch an anime film! However, the work of Hosoda has already been featured, so let's dive into my /other/ favorite anime film director! A beautifully-crafted film, it's easy to see where it garnered tremendous acclaim, regardless of any and all production quandaries that found the creators of the film to be rushed. Unfortunately, my only issues with the film stem from such producer-minded issues, but that doesn't mean that I don't love this film- far from it! Let's jump into the time stream and explore this film anew, and perhaps discover a few new observations along the way? -Check Out the Video Guide!- https://youtu.be/n1yAu3NaEHk
One of my favorite animated films! The film so nice, Hosoda did it twice! which is severely reductive when he very much improved upon what he set out to do with Out War Game. In any case, this film has a lot of heart, it introduced me to city pop, and it's quite dear to me, so let's watch along and listen to me rant about it, for better or worse!
Not only is OnR Episode #005 the first time we focus on a movie, namely Mamoru Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but this is also the first episode in which we host a most honoured guest: (exiled) Ani-Gamer turned UK Anime Network podcasting star, Elliot Page! Hosoda's directing was the lure for Jared, who'd previously not seen this particular title, while Ink and Elliot reveled in an emotional re-watch. And, of course, reflective analysis on the philosphical, emotional, and artistic elements abounds from all. Give us your ear for a little over an hour, and we'll give you much to chew on.
