Kurt Farquhar’s journey highlights how sustainable success comes from mastery of craft, relationship-building, and treating creativity as a business—not chasing visibility or fame. Rushion McDonald uses Kurt’s career as a blueprint for: Building mailbox money through residuals Staying relevant across decades of industry change Monetizing intellectual property Leveraging relationships to sustain opportunity Core Themes Discussed Longevity vs. “getting on” Behind-the-scenes success Residual income (“mailbox money”) Adaptability in changing industries Creative originality Relationship capital Diversifying income through ownership Treating art like a business Key Takeaways 1. Staying In Is Harder Than Getting In While many focus on breaking into the industry, Kurt emphasizes that lasting success requires constant reinvention. “The continuing it for the 30-plus years has been way harder than the getting in in the first.” Insight: Longevity requires discipline, humility, and evolution. 2. Behind-the-Scenes Roles Can Be More Sustainable Kurt chose composing over performing, allowing him to age into his career rather than age out of it. “In television and film… all I’ve got to say is John Williams is in his 90s and still composing.” Insight: Choose lanes that allow long-term relevance and recurring income. 3. Residual Income Is Real Wealth Rushion and Kurt discuss “mailbox money”—recurring payments from past work. “If you just had the mailbox money for King of Queens, you’d be fine.” Insight: True financial freedom comes from owning work that keeps paying. 4. Adaptability Is Non‑Negotiable Kurt has survived massive industry shifts—from analog tape to digital production—by embracing change. “Sustain that good idea, change it, polish it up, and mold it for the changing times.” Insight: Talent without adaptability becomes obsolete. 5. Originality Comes From Listening, Not Forcing a Style Kurt avoids creative stagnation by serving the story, not his ego. “I don’t come in every day trying to force the singular style I’ve done for 38 years.” Insight: Longevity depends on collaboration and humility. 6. Relationships Are Career Currency Kurt credits long-term success to consistently showing up for people—before they’re powerful. “If you only call someone once you read they’ve got something coming up, it’s already too late.” Insight: Relationships built without agenda produce lasting opportunity. 7. Saying “Yes” Creates Opportunity Kurt embraces what he calls the power of yes. “I figure I can say yes more than you and end up making more and doing better.” Insight: Opportunity favors those who remain open, prepared, and professional. 8. Ownership Multiplies Creativity Into Business Kurt built True Music Pro, a licensing library used across major networks and streaming platforms. “I realized companies were licensing more of my music than I was… so I built my own library.” Insight: Ownership turns talent into scalable income. Notable Quotes “The journey to stay in is harder than the journey to get in.” “Treat it like a business and it might treat you in kind.” “I do my job, I do it the best I can, and I move on to the next one.” “Character is character. Relationships matter.” “That success doesn’t happen by accident. It happens with care.” Overall Impact of the Interview This interview serves as a masterclass on creative longevity and wealth-building without celebrity dependency. In this episode of Black Sitcom History, Shannon and Summer delve into the evolving portrayals of Black families on television, from idealized nuclear families to more complex, relatable dynamics. The conversation highlights iconic shows like The Cosby Show, Good Times, The Jeffersons, Family Matters, and Everybody Hates Chris, examining how each depicted different aspects of Black family life—from wealth and success to the challenges of poverty and community resilience. They explore the criticism surrounding the portrayal of perfect families, questioning whether such portrayals are unrealistic or aspirational. The hosts discuss how these shows impacted their own family dynamics, drawing lessons on parenting, communication, and values. Give Me That D: A Disney Channel Original Movie Breakdown Podcast
Happy New Year!! GMTD is back with a truly psychotic film, “The Proud Family Movie.” Thank GOD we have Damon Royster here to help us make sense of the madness! This ain't the TV show, let's just say THAT. But if you love peanuts, boy are you in for a the ride of your life. It would be easier to say what this movie DOESN'T have, but just to whet your appetite, there's a secret formula used in a “pork-nut”, a mad scientist who's building an army of peanut people, a rapper named 15 Cent, a dance crew of 16-year-olds trying to “crunk”, CLONES, a horny Sugar Mama (which is the best part), and a gun that turns peanuts into peanut butter. This one is just cuckoo! Also, WHERE was the Destiny's Child theme song featuring Solange??? Blasphemy! Enjoyyyyyyyy
Cristina gives a little insight into what is next for the DIY Musician Podcast, and Jack interviews artist BARii about their incredible journey as a DIY artist turned pro-songwriter.
Molly, Alan, and Max discuss the actions of the Proud family as they attempt to escape a dastardly plot from a peanut clone named Dr. Carver. Yes, we said peanut clone.

Tiger Woods' return to the course was off to a hot start at the Genesis Open, but a harmless prank played on a fellow competitor has the media all up in its feelings. When James Brown said, “Say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud,” the seeds were planted for the racial idolatry that is being reaped at the expense of black communities in 2023. The latest incarnation of Disney's cartoon series “The Proud Family” is the perfect example of how racial pride is a poisonous seed that is further eroding and promoting the breakdown of families. The rebooted series is dripping with BLM and "1619 Project" talking points and buzzwords and features perhaps the angriest animated characters ever. Jason explores how shows like this lead to the pride that cultivated hatred and violence toward people of color in the 1950s and '60s — shows that are way too similar to the viral videos of black people attacking white people in this century — and calls for black Christians to stand with him against this violence. Today we're joined by Aldo Buttazzoni of PragerU to discuss his recent exposé on YouTube Kids content and the new controversial Disney+ "Proud Family" show. In this report, posted via Twitter, Aldo reveals what disgusting content is not only made available, but advertised to kids upon first creating an account. One account, called "Queer Kid Stuff," breaks down the infinite sexualities in the LGBTQ+ group and details what each letter means. We also discuss Aldo's trip to the Los Angeles Zoo Drag Night, which was marketed to kids as young as 2. Then, we take a look at Disney+'s new show, "The Proud Family," where in one episode titled "Juneteenth," the characters proclaim that slaves built America, Abraham Lincoln didn't actually free slaves, and that black people are deserving of reparations and demand to be paid. Why is more and more of this content creeping into kids' programming? We also look at what's going on in Florida with Governor DeSantis' pushback on critical race theory and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and why this is a very good thing. --- Timecodes: (00:40) Intro (08:52) Interview with Aldo begins / YouTube Kids (23:00) LA Zoo Drag Night (25:50) Proud Family reboot (32:56) Racism courses in Florida (44:19) Hate crime in Orange County --- Today's Sponsors: Good Ranchers — change the way you shop for meat today by visiting GoodRanchers.com/ALLIE and use promo code 'ALLIE' for $20 off your first box of America's best meat and seafood!
