Eric dives into the surprising story of how the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became part of the Disney family. From Haim Saban's early days as a music producer to building Saban Entertainment, we cover his work in cartoon music, partnerships with Deac, successful shows like X-Men: The Animated Series, and the process of adapting Super Sentai into Power Rangers for American TV. We explore the evolution of Fox Kids, Saban's strategy to gain a cable network, the formation and expansion of Fox Family Worldwide, and the sale to Disney, which transformed the Fox Family Channel into ABC Family (now Freeform). The episode also touches on Disney's use of Power Rangers at the theme parks, the creation of Jetix (later Disney XD), the sale of Power Rangers to Hasbro, and the legacy of ABC Family's “25 Days of Christmas” and the inescapable 700 Club. If you're curious how ‘90s kids' TV, Marvel, Disney, and even televangelist Pat Robertson all connect, this episode unpacks it all. C. Scott Votaw is the Assistant Vice Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, where he is responsible for overseeing the Georgia Film Academy. After growing up in Georgia and graduating from college, Scott packed his car and headed west without a plan. With no relevant experience in film and production, he eventually networked his way onto a crew as a runner. Just by being present and paying attention, he found a way to save the production money and was rewarded with an almost immediate promotion to second assistant director. That auspicious start launched him into what would become an incredibly successful 25-year career in the film and production industry. His big break, a job working for Saban Entertainment on its new and wildly popular Power Rangers television show, set him on a course to work with Hollywood legends including George Lucas and Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt. Then came his moment of reckoning. After building a career that was largely unplanned, Scott returned home to Georgia to care for a relative and try something new. He eventually networked his way into opportunities in education, but the timing was serendipitous as Georgia was in the process of building the infrastructure to support the growing film industry in the state. Thanks to Scott's experience in both education and production, and his availability and willingness to take on something new, he found himself in a position to help launch and run the Georgia Film Academy. In this episode, Scott shares his unplanned journey through the film industry, his tough decision to leave it behind and move back home to Georgia, and the incredible timing that set him on a course to transition from an industry insider to an educator at the highest level. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to talk about the 25th anniversary of Digimon Adventure. Digimon Adventure is the first anime series based on the Digital Monster virtual pet toy, which itself is a spinoff of Tamagotchi. It first aired in Japan on March 7, 1999, with an English dub debuting on Fox Kids later that year. The series ran for 54 episodes, ending in 2000. Digimon Adventure follows the eight DigiDestined children who team up with their Digimon (short for Digital Monsters) to save the Digital World. The DigiDestined are Tai (Joshua Seth), Matt (Michael Reisz), Sora (Colleen O'Shaughnessey), Izzy (Mona Marshall), Mimi (Philece Sampler), Joe (Michael Lindsey), T.K. (Wendee Lee) and Kari (Lara Jill Miller). Digimon Adventure launched the Digimon anime franchise, which includes the direct sequel Digimon Adventure 02. In North America, Saban Entertainment combined the two short films from the first series and one from the second to create Digimon: The Movie. A remake of Digimon Adventure aired from 2020 to 2021. Aaron and Josh discuss their relationship with Digimon before going into the show's plot, characters, animation, and monster designs. They also discuss the inevitable comparisons to Pokémon and the legacy of the Digimon franchise. Today's episode is a weird one. It's The Power Trip's first solo episode, with Nathan doing more comic book coverage…except it's a manga…about the first Super Sentai…so it's only peripherally related to Power Rangers. Anyway, thanks to Seven Seas Entertainment (who also translated and published the original Kamen Rider manga), Americans can now experience Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, which was created in 1975 by the Jack Kirby of manga, Shotaro Ishinomori. But if you read this graphic novel, be prepared for it to feel more like James Bond than Power Rangers. All the tropes aren't quite there, but it definitely feels like the prototype for both the Sentai and Ranger legacies. Plus, there's a giant robot brontosaurus and a cameo by Robbie the Robot. ‘Nuff said! ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. Save the “Earsh”! Michael and Nathan risk their friendship returning to a controversial subject—Power Rangers Turbo—which is why they brought on Drew Dodgen of The Cel Cast to moderate. Today they discuss Turbo's source material, Gekisou Sentai Carranger, a parody Sentai that lovingly mocks the franchise. To say most of the humor was lost in translation would be an understatement. Not that American kids would understand most of it, anyway, because it's weird. But that's the charm…even if it borders on late-night cable levels of raunchiness. While Michael remains a simp for a certain “toxic prima donna,” Nathan may have found a new waifu to rival Astronema in this Sentai's main villainess. In other words, if you're the rare breed who likes Turbo, steel thyself for four hours of praise for Carranger at its expense! ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. For this live recording, Michael and Nathan discuss BOOM! Studios' follow-up to the polarizing Saban's Power Rangers (2017): Power Rangers: Aftershock. While this comic unfortunately exists within a vacuum, the guys discuss whether it's a worthy, or at least satisfying, successor to the controversial film. In some ways, it feels more like classic Power Rangers (more time morphed, witty banter) but in other ways, it doesn't (the villains feel straight out of Marvel Comics). Much to the chagrin of some and delight of others, this will probably be the only sequel we ever get to the divisive film. ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. Michael and Nathan come to the strangest and most meme-tastic Super Sentai series yet with Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (not to be confused with the Dairangers' mentor, Master Kaku). After several seasons based on foreign literature and mythology, Kakuranger goes full-tilt Japanese with ninjas fighting Yokai. The fact that any of this was adapted into Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers season three is a small miracle (a flasher monster?!), but it's Alien Rangers' radical re-contextualization that's the most mind-boggling. How did anyone in the Saban writers room look at those obvious ninja costumes and think, “Aliens from a water planet”? But what your hosts weren't prepared for was the podcast getting hijacked by not one but two Yokai! All this plus a debate over the infamous “Friday or fine day” meme in the latest Power Trip! ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. With the 30th anniversary of Power Rangers around the corner, Nathan and Michael dive into their longboxes (well, a shortbox for Michael) to discuss Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 25th Anniversary Special #1. This was an extra-large anthology comic with several short stories that span the franchise. It naturally includes two (-and-a-half) MMPR stories, but it also inexplicably has a Mystic Force tale and a Ninja Steel crossover. The meat of the episode, though, is dedicated to the issue's final story, “The Trial of Astronema,” but not just because it's about Nathan's Ranger crush; it's dark and thought-provoking. ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. We're joined by our two friends, Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) and Travis Alexander (Kaiju Ramen Magazine) to discuss Gosei Sentai Dairanger. This Sentai is in a weird place because it was only sorta adapted by Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers—as in they used mecha footage and some monster footage. The awesome costumes in this series were unused…until Megaforce (but we don't talk about Megaforce). Daniel is interesting because he's seen Super Sentai before Power Rangers (a rarity in the English-speaking world) and Travis loves this because it combines two of his favorite things: martial arts films and tokusatsu. No, it's Going Green, the last Ranger comic produced before BOOM! acquired the license, and it's…wacky, to say the least. It explains how Rita acquired the Green Power Coin—while fighting vegetable people—and chose Tommy as its bearer—after trying to seduce him! Merry Christmas, Listeners with Attitude! In true Power Rangers fashion, The Power Trip's first season “ends” with a holiday special! Nathan and Michael harken back to Mighty Morphin' season two to discuss a VHS episode that originally went out to members of the Power Rangers Fan Club: “Alpha's Magical Christmas.” Oh boy, this (thankfully) non-canonical special is so saccharine, it's guaranteed to give you diabetes. And it's nothing like the show. What's funny is your intrepid hosts discovered there is a literary/audio adaptation that's way better—and they wished they'd discussed that instead. They're joined by writer, critic, and co-host of The Drift Space podcast Jack “GMan” Hudgens to discuss the most divisive and, arguably, most underrated piece of Power Rangers media. For all its faults with its aesthetics, it gets the heart of the franchise right. It was made by people who love Power Rangers, and yet it was largely rejected by the fans. It's tragic, and the film deserves to be re-evaluated. A sequel would've helped it. All this, a thematic discussion on love, and more in the latest episode of The Power Trip! Today's theme song is “Go, Go, Power Rangers” by Brian Tyler. ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. Michael and Nathan reach the apex of the Neo Saban Era: Power Rangers Dino Charge. They bring along their friend Alex Cornett of the Monsters vs. Men podcast to discuss a series that was hyped by one of their listeners for months. Does it live up to that hype? Short answer: yes. And not just because your hosts are coming out of 80+ episodes of crap with Samurai and Megaforce. The characters are fun, the acting is good, and the stories are “old school.” That ending, though…Nathan fought hard not to “rantmaster” it. So hard. But his co-hosts poked the Bearzord. At least it came on the heels of a thematic discussion on selflessness since that's what it took for an Energem to choose someone as a Ranger. ----------------------------------------------- EMAIL FEEDBACK TO THE SHOW: powertrippod@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE SHOW: Follow The Power Trips on Twitter: @ThePowerTripPod. Surprise, Listeners with Attitude! Thanks to one of you (and Words with Friends), we were able to sit down with the man who composed your childhood: Ron Wasserman. He's a rock star in every way (except the sex and drugs, he says), who's composed music for TV, film, commercials, and his band Fisher. We talk about his musical influences (Black Sabbath, no surprise), how he got the gig at Saban Entertainment, and how he composed the iconic “Go, Go, Power Rangers.” He even gives some advice to aspiring musicians. Longest…episode…yet! On the…worst…PR series…ever! We're as surprised you are. Strap in, Listeners with Attitude, because just when Nathan and Michael thought it couldn't get worse than Turbo and Operation Overdrive, the Neo-Saban era breaks their brains. Mitch from the “Entertain This!” podcast joins them to discuss the emptiest Power Ranger season they've ever seen. Seriously, all but one of the characters is prettier than they are talented; the villains are lame; and the so-called “Legendary Battle” is anything but! Michael (sadly) limits Nathan to only two Rantmaster sessions, but boy, did he use them! However, the most ironic thing is this abysmal season inspired a top tier thematic discussion: nostalgia. After binge-watching all 11 episodes of the last quarter of Dino Fury, Nate and Michael need another cigarette! with high production value and likable characters, and the return of a classic villain in Lord Zedd, they guys really enjoyed their time with this stretch of episodes. To kick off the Neo-Saban and Hasbro Eras, Michael and Nathan bring on Jimmy and Billy of the Zeo to Hero podcast—which leads to some sibling squabbles between the guests! Why? Because Billy requested to guest host for Power Rangers Samurai. This series infamously adapted its Sentai counterpart, Shinkenger, exactly, going so far as to have a Caucasian red ranger with a Japanese last name. Then they set it in the most western-looking “Japanese” city ever. Talk about awkward! Nathan loses his mind over how awful the premiere is—even going so far as to issue an apology to the Turbo movie! When Rantmaster apologizes, you know it's bad. But is it the worst they've seen?
