Set Your Minds On Things AboveColossians 3:1-3 “So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”When I read this verse this morning, what stood out to me was when it said, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” This seemed to jump off the page for me. I think the reason for this is because Tony and I have been watching a new series lately. Well, it is actually an old series, but we just started watching it together recently. It is called The Mentalist. It is a really good show that we both really like. The problem with me getting involved in watching a series that I really like is that is all I want to do. I just want to watch the show all the time. However, that isn't good when I have a job and a house to take care of. Tony and I did a good job of getting out of the house and doing yard work on Saturday. But then we were exhausted and watched about 4 hours of TV after that.I don't think watching TV is bad.I think we could all use a break from life at times to just sit and watch something that takes our mind off of life. However, I wish TV was like it was back in the old days when you could watch one episode a week and then you had to wait a week for the next episode. I feel like that lends to moderation much better than streaming does. If you are streaming a show, it is so easy to get addicted and just watch that show and do nothing else for a week or longer. This last time I got COVID, I was stuck in my room for more than a week just to make sure I didn't get the rest of the family sick. Tony was super sweet and made all the meals and took care of driving the boys to wherever they had to goThe first few days, I was pretty sick, and I had to sleep a lot. I was able to watch some TV, but mostly, I needed to sleep. However, once the first few days passed, I felt better, and I could have used that time in quarantine to get a lot of work done on my book or on something else. I could have cleaned the attic, which always seems to need cleaning. However, I just watched TV the whole time.I had gone to visit my brother in FL a few weeks earlier, and he and his wife were watching a TV show that looked really good. I thought it was just a few seasons, and I thought it had about 10-12 episodes a season. However, I was wrong. It has six seasons, with most seasons having 20-22 episodes. Each episode is 45 min long. Once I get started in a show, I get so involved all I want to do is watch the show. So, instead of doing something productive while I was sick, I just watched TV from when I woke up to way after I should have been asleep.I say all of this to explain why I think the words “Set your mind on things that are above” jumped off the page at me. Although I don't think there is anything wrong with watching TV in moderation, I do feel binge-watching TV for hours upon hours is not good for us. Also, I think what we watch is important too. For instance, if I was binge-watching The Chosen or some TV show/movie about the Saints, then I think it would be better because it would help me grow closer to the Lord. Tony and I went to see the first few episodes of The Chosen, season 4, in the movie theater. We both really enjoyed it and yet we have yet to finish watching Season 4 because we are busy watching other things. Things that are not helping bring us closer to the Lord. There was a time several years ago when I was very disciplined. I made up my mind on something, and I would follow through. I seem to struggle with that these days. However, back then, I had decided I was watching too much TV, and it wasn't helping me to be the person I wanted to be. The person God wanted me to be. So I decided I wouldn't watch TV or movies unless it was helping me grow closer to the Lord or unless it was spending time with my family. This was hard for me as our family was going through some very hard times and there were lots of times when I wanted to escape life and just veg in front of the TV. However, I had made a promise to myself that I wasn't going to do this. I started watching movies, or episodes on the streaming platform called “Formed.” It is like Netflix, but it only has religious movies or shows. A lot of parishes will purchase a subscription for their whole parish so that all the parishioners can get a code and use it for free. I listened to some great audio teachings, and I watched some great movies about the Saints. It was a really good use of my time and it helped me grow closer to the Lord. What is the thing that is keeping you away from the Lord? Or, maybe it's not keeping you away from Him, but it is keeping you from being as close as you could be to Him. Is it keeping busy, filling your schedule with so much stuff that you don't have time to spend with the Lord? Is it Facebook or other social media platforms? Is it spending too much time out and about with friends and family that there isn't time left for God? I think this verse is a good reminder for us today that our focus needs to be on things above and not on things of this world. The things of this world will all perish one day, and they will no longer exist. This world is fleeting when we compare it to the eternity we have after we leave this world. Let's focus on what matters, the things above.I know that my thing is probably not your thing. The thing that gets in the way of me coming to God is probably something different from what is getting in your way. However, I am willing to bet there is something getting in your way, something distracting you from growing closer to the Lord. Something taking up your time so that you don't have as much time with the Lord as you would like. Today might be a great day to spend a few minutes to stop and talk to the Lord about what is getting in the way of your relationship with Him. Ask Him what is coming in between you or what is distracting you. If you sit and listen, He will answer you. He will help you to see what is getting in between you two. Then, ask Him what He would like you to do about it. Ask Him how He would like to help you overcome this thing that is getting in the middle of you two. For me, I can already feel Him telling me to stop trying to escape with TV. I can feel Him telling me to spend that time with Him instead. So, I am going to do my best to obey. How about you? What is He calling you to do or to stop doing?Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, you are amazing, and we are sorry that we are focusing on things of this world instead of focusing on things above. We are sorry we are letting things of this world come in between us or distract us from you. We ask for your help, Lord. We ask you to show us anything that is coming in between us, and we ask that you help us to correct it. We want to grow closer to you, Lord. We want to be in union with you, help us figure out how. Help us put you above all else. It can feel overwhelming to face it all at once. But here's the truth: top-producing real estate agents have faced similar challenges before and come out victorious. Those who thrived through the 2008 recession learned to expect the unexpected. They weren't caught off guard when the market shifted—they anticipated it, prepared for the worst, and stayed ahead. For some, in the digital age, life feels faraway and disconnected. As if each and every part of life comes from a separate factory, Amazon'ed right to our front doors. Today's guest, Grace Gurganus, wanted to connect the dots and have a more immediate connection with her lived experience. She set out to make an impact in her local food system in southern Oregon, and experienced a radical change in lifestyle and career. Grace is a mobile butcher, meaning she earns her keep traveling from farm to farm and slaughtering animals onsite. It wasn't the life she expected to have, but the life she found from following her heart and trusting the process along the way. On today's episode, Corinne and Grace not only discuss the story of how Grace wound up on the “kill truck”, but also how her work experience has shaped her life and healed some deep wounds. It's a powerful conversation for anyone interested in getting to the heart of the matter— the line between life and death, and how by doing challenging things, life becomes easier. Corinne and Grace talk about: Grace's circuitous journey to become a mobile butcher How Grace's vision transitioned from a future of being the butcher cutting meat, to the butcher performing on-farm slaughterThe power of Grace showing up, and being willing to learnGrace's first day on the “kill truck”Grace's relationship to her empathy, in context with her workSlowdown FarmsteadStart a Farm Where flowery language meets the lived experience “There's no practice cow”Why Grace is always going to be the person who slaughters her own livestockWhat is lost when we prioritize efficiency over everything else in animal agricultureHow Grace embraces the varying shades of morality in her workThe reason doing hard things made Grace's life so much easier The ways butchering brings Grace home to herselfGrace's journey with her mother's cancer diagnosis, and eventual deathWalking through the fears around losing loved ones, and learning to let goThe way Grace feels her mother's essence in her everyday lifeThe power of beginning change right in your own community Connect with Grace on instagram @gracieg_goodkarmafarm This episode was brought to you by Late Bloomer Ranch. Rox opens up and talks candidly about the weight on his shoulders, the pressure, and the expectations."Surrender" is the operative term here. The transition into motherhood often feels disorienting and destabilizing - and when we don't have the language to adequately communicate our experiences, it can feel isolating and like there is something wrong. So in this episode, we are putting a name to the experience: Matrescence. I am joined by motherhood therapist & matrescence coach Chelsea Robinson, LCSW, for a conversation on the experience of becoming a mother, the continual transformation that comes with that role, and how an understanding of matresence can expand our views of motherhood for all. In this episode, Chelsea and I talk about: What matrescence is, as both the transition into motherhood and the entire motherhood experienceWhy having adequate language to describe our experiences makes a differenceThe societal, cultural, & generational factors that impact momsHow far we've come in increasing support for moms, and how far we still have to goThe importance of community & connection in motherhoodHow spending time alone can help us embrace our motherhood experiencesA little about our guest:Chelsea Robinson, LCSW, is a motherhood therapist, matrescence coach, village builder and founder of Mama's Modern Village. With over 10 years of experience in the field of mental health, she supports women on their motherhood journey at the intersection of modern motherhood culture and a woman's matrescence, her transition from woman to mother. Chelsea has created "Becoming Mama", a 12-week program designed to support women all along their motherhood journey in decreasing their burnout, stress and overwhelm, while increasing their confidence, joy and understanding of their matrescence. " Real love stories are inconvenient. As a culture we've thrown away romanticism in favor of extreme practicality. "Earlier the year, on the heals of my convo w/ Dani Beinstein, we said "Let's connect in August and record again late summer!" And left it at that. But then, in the last few months, the consistencies arising in myself and my clients was so profound, I had to reach out again. Those consistencies weren't just housed in relationship but in this grander evolution of safely. Namely:The death of our "good girls"Breaking from conditioning in even more radical waysDropping into the body and into the feminineThere's an overarching energy of "There's no going back. Things can't continue the way they have been." But in a good way. Truly. At the end of my conversation with Dani it felt like all the stress had drained from my body. I hope this episode does the same thing for you.Themes discussed in this episode:Coming to terms with patterns + ways of being/living that are really no longer serving us — like we've been aware of them for a while but it's finally like this has to goThe greater "sea change," as Dani puts it, we're seeing as a society, but predominantly as women in the careers we've built, the lives we've built, and what our hearts are cravingHow the love stories we attach to, are mostly ones of inconvenience — star crossed lovers, complete opposites, the city girl who surrenders to the cowboy, etc.Dani's WebsiteDani's InstagramTake My Online CourseWork with me PrivatelyConnect on InstagramWebsitePodcast Music Credit: James Maldonado

We all know that achieving "perfection" is a very unrealistic goal in our day-to-day lives! When it comes to managing your finances, we understand how the pressure of being "perfect" may lead to avoidance, which ultimately only makes the state of things worse. Today, Julie's chatting with one of our favorite guests, Linzy Bonham, about how the pressure of financial "perfection" can lead to burnout and procrastination.Linzy Bonham is a therapist in private practice, a consultant who helps therapists feel calm and in control of their finances, and the creator of the Money Skills for Therapists course. As the daughter of an accountant, Linzy inherited a good dose of bookkeeping brain. She's half therapist, half bookkeeper! So when she went into private practice, she dug right into all the ways to build a healthy business that pays for her life and always has extra money in the bank. Sometimes, in life, we can forget who we are. The way of the world, comparisons, circumstances can rob us of our view of our true value and potential. Often, the world attempts to define who we are or tell us we are something other than who we know we can be. But when we remember who we are, we become empowered. And the same goes for teams, organizations and families. On today's episode, McKay dives into how we can remember who we are. McKay opens with a moving story about Humboldt Canada and the tragic events of the Humboldt Bronco Hockey Team. He recounts the experience of Scott Thomas after losing his son, Evan, and what the city of Humboldt did to remember who they were as a city and who the players were as a team. McKay reviews why it's so important to remind yourself of who you are, where you're going, and why. Too often, failure and others' opinions prevent us from embracing ourselves. Take the MLB's Nolan Ryan for example, who nearly let his hall-of-fame professional career slip away, purely because he lacked confidence. McKay also goes on to tackle some techniques that can help you stay authentic, such as journaling, avoiding doubt and dabble, and ultimately feeding your faith. As you will hear today, you're the only person who knows you best, and it's important to listen to that. The Finer Details of This Episode: The origins of GoFundMeThe Humboldt Bronco's bus accident Staying true to your choicesNolan Ryan's journey to the MLBReminding yourself where you want to goThe value of journaling Don't doubt or dabbleFeeding your faithQuotes: “That day when Evan came home from school, he was crying and trying desperately to wipe the birthmark from his cheek. He tried and tried again to wash it away, but wasn't able to do so. And he wondered why God had given him this mark on his cheek.”“And everyone knew it meant that their son, if still at the scene, was gone.”“It was his birthmark, the mark on his cheek that his dad looked for when he came to recognize Evan. It was his birthmark, the mark that he never wanted on his cheek that helped his dad recognize him when it was his dad's time to identify him.”“Always remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and twice as valuable than you ever imagined. Sometimes the world attempts to define who we are, or tell us we are something other than who we know we can be.”“If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great. Well, the players embrace the hard of it, and go on to find out who they really are.”“And one house after another had sticks set out hoping that those who had passed away would see that they are loved and that they remembered who they were. So put your sticks out so to speak and remind yourself frequently who you are. Next, write or talk to yourself.”“Likewise, it's easy for us to let the fungus of doubt or discouragement take over our livelihood. That's why we need an injection of faith every day: faith in ourselves, in our team, in the fact that there are good things– great things waiting for you in the future. So make it a point to feed your mind and soul with faith.”Links: Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen

Think about a situation or person in your life where you have held on so tight, refusing to let go, all while knowing keeping that person around, or staying in that situation is not serving your highest good. How does it make you feel to feel stuck there? Pretty terrible I'm guessing. Letting go is never easy, but it might be the last barrier between the life you have now and a life of peace and purpose. Not being in alignment can cost you the inner and outer peace that you desire. So why do so many of us hold on so tight?Letting go takes courage, but releasing yourself from that which is holding you back creates space to allow for the things that are truly meant for you. Listen in to hear how you can start the process of letting go of what doesn't serve you today. Topics discussed in this episode:The concept of letting goThe feeling of lightness after letting go What it looks like to physically and mentally releaseLeaving behind limiting beliefs, disempowerment, and an old identityWhy it is difficult to leave a situation we know is bad for usPerspective on death and letting goConnect with Dr. Zhang on Facebook and Instagram.

I think it's about leading in complexity.""The key to success is learning. And the biggest hindrance for learning is when you think you know.""So as a leader, you first need to kind of shift from a 'know it all' to 'learn it all' approach." (attributed to Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella)"In Agile, you work with creating faster feedback loops and high-quality feedback loops. You want to have both quantitative and qualitative data."Resources Mentioned In This EpisodeBlog: CrispUpcoming Event/Learning Opportunity: Leading ComplexityDocumentary: Atari: Game OverBook: Deliberately Developmental Organization by Kegan and colleaguesWebsite: The Agile ManifestoBook: Empowered: Ordinary People Extraordinary Products (Silicon Valley Product Group) by Cagan and JonesAbout the 2022 ILA Healthcare Conference2022 ILA Healthcare ConferenceAbout The International Leadership Association (ILA)The ILA was created in 1999 to bring together professionals with a keen interest in the study, practice, and teaching of leadership.
