Well we took a little break as Harry completed the Summer Bridge program at Shippensburg University but we are back and have an episode chock full of wonderfully geeky Warhammer content.  In this episode we start off by talking about our first foray into Age of Sigmar. We played both a Spearhead game and a full 2000 point army game. Both were extremely enjoyable. In our next segment we talked about some Warhammer news and touched on the Top 50 comic sales of July. We wrap up this episode talking about the art of Dungeons and Dragons and a great documentary on the topic called Eye of the Beholder. We also talk about the incredible art resource book called Dungeons & Dragons Art & Arcana. Check out the documentary at https://www.eyeofthebeholdermovie.com/ and stream it now  on Amazon. Grab the book that we talked about at Dungeons and Dragons Art & Arcana. Finally we wrap it up and talk about all the updates that have been going on at our website. Lot's of new posts and the launch of a monthly giveaway. Check it out and you can Win Free Warhammer Stuff!

I'm joined this week by Kyle Newman, one of the authors of Dungeons & Dragons Art & Arcana: A Visual History. You may also know Kyle as the Director of Fanboys (2009) and Barely Lethal (2015). Kyle talked with me about the genesis of Art & Arcana and how the four authors came together on the project. He discusses how the book was originally organized and plotted out by the creative team, and how they navigated the balance between dissecting and celebrating the nostalgia of Dungeons & Dragons. I asked Kyle how mining nostalgia has been different in the Star Wars and D&D fandoms over the years. We focus on the segment of D&D history that covered 3.5, 4th and 5th Editions, and emphasis that we both enjoyed what 4th Edition had to offer. He clarified that he wrote most of the chapter on 4th Edition, and we discuss the community's relationship with that era of D&D and how it led to the current 5th Edition. I asked him about the past two years of his archaeological delve into D&D's history to learn where he thinks D&D will go next. Tune in for the full context of his comment, "There will be a 6th Edition."

Dungeons & Dragons has become one of the most iconic game brands in the world. Since its genesis in 1974 the game has expanded far beyond its humble beginnings, and its scope increased by magnitudes after its induction into the publishing realm of Wizards of the Coast, based in Washington. To take us on an unprecedented journey through the visual evolution of the brand, the author team of Michael Witwer, Kyle Newman, and Jon Peterson will be joined by the creators of the 5th edition of the game, Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins from Wizards of the Coast. The panel shared highlights from Dungeons and Dragons Art and Arcana and was moderated by Greg Tito, co-host of Dragon Talk. This team of authors offered us a look at never-before-seen sketches, large-format canvases, rare photographs, one-of-a-kind drafts, and more. They shared artistic findings from the archives of Wizards of the Coast, the personal compilations of top collectors, and conversations with the designers and illustrators who created the distinctive characters, concepts, and visuals that have defined fantasy art and gameplay for generations. Sit in for a crash course in gaming history, and explore the most comprehensive collection of D&D imagery ever assembled.   Michael Witwer is the author of the critically acclaimed Empire of Imagination: Gary Gygax and the Birth of Dungeons & Dragons. Michael is widely considered an expert on D&D history and has discussed the topic on NPR’s All Things Considered, at the Boston Book Festival, at Gen Con, and elsewhere. Kyle Newman is a writer/director whose work includes Fanboys written by Ernie Cline, starring Kristen Bell and Seth Rogen; Barely Lethal, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jessica Alba; and music videos for artists including Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift. Jon Peterson is a widely recognized authority on the history of games. His book Playing at the World was called “the first serious history of the development of Dungeons & Dragons” by The Village Voice. He has contributed to academic anthologies on games including Zones of Control and the forthcoming Role-Playing Game Studies: Transmedia Foundations. Christopher Perkins is the lead story designer for the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game. A gaming industry veteran, Chris has written or contributed to more than three hundred books and articles over the past thirty years. He is also a world-famous Dungeon Master who performs on live-streamed D&D shows, including Acquisitions Incorporated and Dice, Camera, Action! Jeremy Crawford is the co-lead designer of fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons. He led the design of the Player’s Handbook and now oversees the creation of rules and books for the D&D tabletop roleplaying game. Over the years, he has worked on many books for D&D and other games, including Blue Rose, Mutants & Masterminds, and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Greg Tito has had a weird and long career as an Off Broadway stage manager, a playwright, a theater carpenter, a secretary, an RPG designer, a games journalist, and now a PR/Marketing person. He has loved Dungeons & Dragons ever since 1985 when he found an old copy of the AD&D Dungeon Master’s Guide on his brother’s bookshelf. Dungeons & Dragons was part of every GenXer’s experience growing up, whether they played the game or not.  From the “Satanic Panic” to the toys, magazines, and cartoon, D&D prevailed in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.  Even today, as comic book stores and specialty shops host in-house role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragons continues to be an important part of pop culture.  This week, shazbazzar and JediShua invite SuperFriend Michael Witwer to talk about Dungeons & Dragons Art and Arcana, his second publication centered around this “Daddy of Modern Gaming”.   Dungeons & Dragons Art and Arcana Co-authored by Michael Witwer, Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson, and Sam Witwer, this oversized hardcover focuses on the artwork essential to understanding a game that was often played with little more than a pencil, some paper, strangely-shaped dice, and a lot of imagination.  Yet, as the book’s subtitle proclaims, this 400+ page tome is more than a high-quality art book, it is indeed a Visual History of the game itself as well as its impact on the culture of the ‘70s and ‘80s and even today.  The history of the game and its various editions runs throughout the course of the book, as original artwork from the ‘70s to the ‘10s fills every page in brilliant, full color reproductions. From artwork created for the game itself to images surrounding the game, such as actual advertisements and flyers, photographs of items that inspired aspects of the game, and even early drafts and sketches of the game’s most memorable features, Dungeons & Dragons Art and Arcana is a treasure worthy of the adventure — and it’s available for purchase tomorrow. Join shazbazzar and JediShua as they talk to co-author Michael Witwer about the contents of the book, its origins, and general discussion about Dungeons & Dragons itself.  TechnoRetro Dads recommend not only the book itself, but (if you can get a copy, the Special Edition of the book with some great ephemera for those with a penchant for history and rarities of days gone by).  You’ll love Dungeons & Dragons Art and Arcana — and we hope you enjoy this episode of TechnoRetro Dads, too.   Thanks for tuning in to TechnoRetro Dads, EarBuds!  Don’t get burned by missing a single  episode of TechnoRetro Dads — subscribe on iTunes or Apple Podcasts.  Don’t forget to rate and review TechnoRetro Dads on iTunes, share us and with us on social media, get TechnoRetro merch at TeePublic, and join discussions on Discord about toys, cereal, games, movies and/or shows from the ‘70s and ‘80s by giving the ‘Dads your feedback via voice mail at (209) 878-7323 or sending us your mp3dback via electronic-M to podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com.
