Sinners recently dropped on HBO Max! We caught Ryan Coogler's film on the big screen a few months back. It stars Michael B. Jordan and Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who return to their hometown in Mississippi in 1932 to take on some sort of evil that we won't spoil here. The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. This movie was met with critical acclaim and got people talking, so let's talk about it!
If we're sticking with our sneaky theme of new releases, then we *have* to talk about Sinners (2025). One of the biggest movies to hit screens this year — and already the subject of future Oscar speculation — Ryan Coogler's latest collab with bestie Michael B. Jordan had audiences buzzing. This movie produced its fair share of both ~discourse~ and discussion, and we're adding our voices to the choir as we break down the vampire design, fall in love with Wunmi Mosaku and Hailee Steinfeld, and talk about that very important tutorial on how to eat some ice cream. Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have cashed in on teaming up over the past decade, from Coogler's debut Fruitvale Station, to Black Panther, to Creed. This 2025 film, their fifth collaboration, sees Coogler double down on Michael B. Jordan - quite literally. Set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta, this genre-defying film sees Jordan play twin brothers who seek to open their own juke joint, only to be threatened by a clan of vampires. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Delroy Lindo and introduces singer Miles Caton in his first film role. Earning $365 million at the box office to date, it is one of the best-received films of the year so far and an early contender for an Oscar nomination. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 147 - Turning the Tables - TRUE GRIT - David Mullen Cinematographer David Mullen (Season 1, Episode 83 & Season 2, Episode 113) returns for a new edition of the “Turning the Tables” series in this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. David's questions center around our work on the Coen Brothers' 2010 version of TRUE GRIT, and we had a wonderful time answering them. In addition to the questions concerning how we actually made the film, we also discuss the long history of westerns and the visual variety within the genre. We also reveal the story behind the push-in in the opening shot of the film, what was on location and what was on stage, and how we shot the river crossing scene. We later reflect on working with then-child actor Hailee Steinfeld, and we discuss the script's unique and engaging dialogue. We also reflect on the utility of cowboy hats and on the visual strength of westerns directed by John Ford and Sergio Leone, and we swap stories from our early-career, low-budget exterior shoots. Topics also include: film stocks, aspect ratios, lighting locations and sets, and nighttime nightmares shooting a black mare against a black sky. - Recommended Viewing: TRUE GRIT (2010) - This episode is sponsored by Aputure & Profoto

Sinners has become the surprise smash hit of the year, breaking records and raking in over $300 million dollars so far at the box office. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell and more, and directed by Ryan Coogler, the film has managed to take things that are usually seen as harbingers of low audience turnout (like an R rating and the horror genre) and mold them into a film that's wildly successful. And it could possibly even save Hollywood – if the studios are willing to take the right lessons from this triumph. So, what does Sinners tell us about how to make a winning film in our modern era? This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss Ryan Coogler's latest film, Sinners, starring Michael B Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jack O'Connell. The film follows twin brothers who return to their hometown to start a juke joint but run up against an unlikely problem. The film is deeply layered but one aspect we discuss thoroughly throughout is the idea of assimilation into what is perceived as a dominant or better culture/way of life from ones already a part of it versus the ability to be truly free and make your own impact with the need to give up any parts of yourself in the process.

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Buffalo Bandits color commentary and sports media personality Steve Burmel for a conversation on several Buffalo sports topics, including reaction to HBO having the Buffalo Bills on Hard Knocks this summer and some potential fun storylines. In what was certainly unexpected news, HBO dropped a bit of a bombshell on Bills Mafia Wednesday with the announcement that the Bills would be the featured team on the popular and longstanding Hard Knocks series that begins this August. It's the first time in the history of the show the Bills have been the featured team, going all the way back to its inception with the Baltimore Ravens back in 2001. The guys have plenty of reaction to the news and discuss what they like and don't like, if anything about it.Of course, for good television their needs to be interesting storylines and arcs, and the guys spend some times going over the possibilities. Among them of course is Josh Allen, coming off his first MVP season and will be newly married to actress Hailee Steinfeld. Other potential things to keep your eyes on would be the charismatic Tre White coming back to Buffalo and trying to earn a job with the team, Buffalo born and raised Joe Andreessen attempting to stick his hometown team for a second straight year, Ray Davis overcoming several life obstacles to carve a role with the team in the NFL, Keon Coleman serving up some funny/goofy one liners and if Matt Milano will actually speak at any point of the season. Also, Steve covers the Bandits and gives listeners insight to the winner-take-all championship game in Buffalo coming up this Saturday afternoon. That plus some Sabres talk and plenty more!Follow Steve on Twitter @SteveBurmel.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.Special thanks to local Buffalo band, Orange Zestf or allowing us to use their awesome single, “Old Friends” as the new official intro music for Talking Buffalo.
