Pat Thompson spends most of his time helping early-stage companies create their communication strategies. He started his career doing PR/Marketing for emerging technology companies in San Francisco and went on the be the editor of the North American Region for a tech publication called CoinGeek.com before diving head-first into the world of early-stage start-up investing and support at two start-up incubators. Afterward, he launched the Bootstrap First incubator, helping idea-stage founders and pre-revenue businesses in the Philadelphia area go from initial concept to early adopter launch in 100 days. Pat still helps a few early-stage founders on their journey to early adopter launching and growth but is currently spending most of his time doing communications about consumer-facing artificial intelligence for a media agency in London as he prepares to take his next step in his career (entering law school in fall 2025 so that he can better-help businesses navigate their legal obstacles). If Pat isn't spending his time learning about new technologies and business frameworks, then he is probably roasting coffee, collecting watches, snowboarding somewhere on the east coast, or watching college basketball. Whatever you're looking for, whether to eat, drink, or wear an item...it boils down to the farmers that grow and tend to the land and animals. More importantly we need farmers like Matthew Braud who co-owns Hollow House Farms in Furlong, PA to help bring the farming community new ways to maintain regenerative and sustainable practices, so that local produce, livestock, and products will be available for generations to come. Matthew joined me to discuss the importance of his farming practices, what he and his wife offer, and a deeper understanding of what sustainable aquaponic farming is.I next spoke with a long-time friend of the show, Megan Hilbert who is the CEO and Owner of Reds Rolling Restaurant I, II, and III. Megan originally joined the show in 2020, and has since grown her business from owning one truck to now having a fleet. There's a reason for that, as her entrepreneurial spirit was backed with a PR & Marketing education, along with a history within the food-truck and restaurant industry. So, it's no surprise that her menu is not only extensive, it's delicious and very filling! Today Megan is looking to expand her brand further - exciting news to be announced in the near future - but for now you can find her vending at local farmers markets, events, or reach out to her to have your next event catered by one of her trucks.Lastly, I sat down with the co-owners of The Brass Tap in Manayunk, Izak and Danielle Du Plooy. The Brass Tap, which is a Florida-based company, allows owners to customize their menu and beverage program to reflect the surrounding community. As both Izak and Danielle have fondness of Philadelphia, they've since put down roots. The couple, who had originally purchased the building and rented the location out to another business, seized their opportunity to own a restaurant when the former tenant had to close. Today, the Du Plooys offer an elevated menu as well as 30 local beers-on-tap along with Happy Hour specials, Brunch, and special events like trivia nights, live music, and bingo!

Say it with me: Social media is not the end all be all marketing platform. Social media platforms offer a lot of possible benefits, yes, but you do NOT have to be active on social media or have an account to have a successful business. And in this episode, we're talking about one of the best ways you can market and grow your business without ever touching social media. -- Want to explore working together? Email me at chelsea@chelseaquint.com, or send me a message on Instagram. -- Enter: earned media. We'll breakdown the difference between earned, paid and owned media, unpack the key benefits of earned media and how to get it, then walk you through the four core steps of building your own earned media marketing strategy. Want to read those steps? Keep scrolling. How to Design Your PR Strategy Set the goals for your business. Ideally, your PR and earned media goals are going to line up with your overall business goals. Because yes, wanting to land a big TV segment or an interview on a big podcast are totally valid goals, but if you aren't clear and intentional about how those tactics are going to grow your brand's presence, increase awareness of your message and products, or drive people toward what you sell, your efforts may fall flat. So decide what you want in business, then make sure your strategy lines up. This also requires knowing your offers, audience personas, and those other foundational business basics. Design Your Strategy. Simply put, your strategy is the plan you'll follow to achieve your goals. So with a PR strategy, you start with your goal, then decide what actions you'll take to move closer to that goal. Example: if you want to grow your audience, you'll need to decide which platform(s) you want to drive people toward, identify the key messages and storylines you want people to understand, and define what platform(s) you'll be reaching out to (podcasts, TV, blogs, magazines, speaking events, etc.) - making sure those things are aligned with what your ideal customers want. In short: what will you do (big picture) to achieve your goal, thinking about it in terms of accessing earned media. Define Your Tasks and Tactics. Here we get more specific. Your strategy is the big picture, North Star direction, tasks and tactics are where you start to create your to do list. So if you decide that podcast guesting and securing interviews is a key strategy for growing your audience or promoting a specific product launch, you need to do research on podcasts to pitch and make a list of the contact information and show details to personalize your pitches. You'll also need to block off time to listen to each show - at least a few episodes - to get a sense of the show and where your brand can fit and be truly valuable and unique. You'll need to define a few story angles that offer variety but still connect to your key goals, and really refine the message so it's concise and potent when you're sending a pitch. Create Your Timeline. I always have clients start by assessing their current capacity. How much do you have going on in other areas of your business outside of the PR marketing space? How about the rest of your life? How about travel, mental and physical health, kids, family, etc.? So first explore your capacity, then identify how much time and energy you have to commit to your PR strategy. Maybe break that down into how much time you can devote to your tasks each week or month, then start to slot those into your weeks. Cool? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chelseaquint/message
The reason I originally started this podcast was to showcase the various jobs you can find in agriculture today. We have an absolute perfect example of someone who doesn't come from the sector but has paved her career and what a career it has been. Milly Fyfe comes on the podcast today. Milly has been the CEO of the shorthorn cattle society, she was national chair of the National Federation of Young Farmers, she has been a regional manager of RSABI, otherwise known as the Royal agricultural benevolent Institute with this, she finds herself as a director of the Oxford farm in conference! Believe it or not, we are not quite at what Milly is doing today…everything mentioned so far is in the past. Currently Milly Fyfe is at home with two fantastically name children working on the farm with her husband, on top of this she runs her own PR and marketing company, as well as her own podcast similar to the R2Kast showcasing those in food and farming, “the countryside kitchen meets” and on top of that, a weekly blog showcasing affordable meals that parents can make themselves, “no fuss meals for busy parents”. As always, enjoy!!!

Fia is also seen as a Hollywood glam-star, garnished with a rockstar twist. On her latest release Red Umbrella, she unleashes a masterful vision for storytelling. The album attempts to connect the dots along a path less traveled, embracing strength through vulnerability, devine-femininity, spiritual awakening, sexual liberation and a love story. Fia recorded her first album, Everything Girl, at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. under the musical direction of Will McFarlane (Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Bobby "Blue" Bland) and Brian Malouf (Michael Jackson, Queen, Madonna), and features players from the iconic Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, 'The Swampers.' She has toured the U.S. and Asia, and has been featured on the back cover of Billboard Magazine, Rolling Stone, CelebMix, Music Connection, Elicit Magazine, Prelude Press, Buzz Music, The Hype Magazine among other publications. That is the abbreviated version of her bio from FiaNyxx.com. Earlier this year, she did an impressive video for the single Escape, with dancer/choreographer Bobby Newberry (Danity Kane, Pussycat Dolls, Missy Elliot). In this conversation we talk about that video, plus PR, marketing, common indie artist struggles, release strategy, recording studio lessons, building confidence through repetition, and theatrical performance. I believe Fia was suffering from allergies or possibly a cold when we spoke. Fia, I hope you're all better now. Please enjoy this conversation with me and singer, songwriter, performer Fia Nyxx. On this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, let's talk about public relations/communications, and a very different point of view about that. In particular, why your content is your marketing. Towards the end, we'll talk about five easy steps to consider when building your own direct audience, and bypassing the legacy publications: the old-school, dusty gatekeepers. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. The Problem with Legacy Media This episode is inspired in part by a conversation I had with a CEO friend, which I then posted on LinkedIn. It reads: A CEO friend just asked me, if he should go to a PR/Marketing smooze event with the legacy business media. Here's my advice. (Warning: I'm biased. But for a reason) The bulk of legacy media is a waste of time. I used to write for many of the biggest legacy business media outlets. Stopped 5+ years ago, because a) (almost) no one reads it and b) it is mostly clickbait. No one reads Forbes fortune Fast Company, Inc, etc. anymore. Your best ROI will come from building your own media and thought leadership. And the AHA here is every company needs to be a media company. Playing Both Sides Another issue is that even as these legacy media have gone digital, they still rely on cookie cutter strategies and clickbait-y articles. They play the SEO game to keep their websites on top of searches, and then have companies pay to be featured as top so-and-so in a category. Some even go as far as charging subscription to access their media, which is a whole other reason why people don't read their stuff anymore. You pay to get the “information”, only to find out that it's something you can probably read 2 lines down the search results. Essentially, they are trying to get revenues from both sides of the process, which will eventually lead to burning both ends of the stick faster. They are still clinging to traditional ways, which shows even when they went digital. Go Direct to the Source So rather than subscribing to “publication lists” that doesn't really net you any traffic, it's best to do it in-house and go direct to the source by tapping into the digital market itself. You can start small with building up channels in various social media platforms, and promoting your content and linking back to your website if they are interested for more. At the very least, you now have a platform to actively engage your audience, and get a pulse of what works and what doesn't, and go from there. To find out the other steps in doing better PR and communications on your own, download and listen to this episode. This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Tracy Lamourie. Tracy is a high-profile international award-winning publicist and the Founder and Managing Director of Lamourie Media Inc. Tracy has been Featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, The Hollywood Times, NBC TV, and other major media. She works across borders and across industries from major entertainment projects to small businesses. There is a big difference between marketing and PR. And most people don't understand it. So, I've asked Tracy to come on share the secrets of successful PR and how to maximize PR and marketing together. https://www.lamouriemedia.com/ Tracey wrote her first PR release when she was 28. It was for activist work to help an innocent man get off death row. That kicked off her career and a 20-year journey resulting in the release of the man after his conviction was overturned. During this time, she saw that she could use her skills in gaining press and attention to help businesses grow. She helps to make sure business are telling their stories in the best way and in the right places to help them stay ahead of their competition. She strategically uses media on a global scale and has never purchased an ad. What is the difference between marketing and PR? Here's an analogy: “If a young man how amazing he is, successful, and handsome he is – that is advertising. If he tells her how beautiful and intelligent she is - that is marketing. If someone else tells that man's date how amazing, successful, and handsome he is – that is PR.” Everyone can create a beautiful deck and say great things about themselves, but where things really matter is when someone goes and searches a business or person, do they find a lot of what others say about them, where they are quoted, etc. Public relations fills the component to get you the earned media that you cannot buy. PR builds the 3rd party credibility necessary for validation and success. What are the elements of a successful PR strategy? It elevates and celebrates the business or person. It positions the business or person as an expert. It provides 3rd party validation. It uses media to bring a business or person to a bigger stage. Most effective mediums for PR? It varies based on the business or person. Tracey starts with traditional media. Radio, TV, Magazines, Podcast, etc. Tracey figures out the best places to showcase the client's expertise. Tips for gaining attention? Use podcast matchmaker services for podcasts. The #1 key is to understand the pitch. It is not your bio or ad for your company. It is your compelling story that grabs attention. At the 16 min mark, Tracey gives a good example of a compelling pitch she uses to gain attention. Think in terms of what will help them with a good story or angle. Use HARO (Help a Reporter Out) to get your pitch out to reporters looking for stories. A PR specialist will search and find all the best opportunities for their clients and pitch them. What are the elements of a great pitch? Step 1 is to find resources at places like HARO. Whenever you reach out to an editor, remember they are not in the business of giving you free advertising – you are someone who give them great information for their audience. At the 25 min, Tracey gives an example of what not to do when pitching reporter/editor. You will need to tailor your pitch for each pitch you do so that is resonates with the reporter/editor you are sending it to. How can an entrepreneur ensure they are maximizing their marketing and PR together? Don't be afraid to go big or wide. Go beyond typical marketing/PR and go for rewards or speaking engagements. Look for local awards and publications to help get some visibility to start. They are easier. Anything you can bring your knowledge to and present yourself as a thought-leader/expert you should pitch to. At the 32 min mark Tracey talks about the campaign to free a man from death row and lessons learned from their success. When Tracey met her husband, he had a radio show that focused on local issues and needs. They decided to get on the internet and start publishing links to what they were interested in (it was the early days of the internet). While searching for stories and links that interested them, they learned about the case of a man named Jimmy Dennis who claimed he was wrongly accused and was innocent. Jimmy had paid for a listing online that asked people to help find justice. They reached out and asked to learn more and Jimmy responded with 28 pages of details and court documents that showed he did not commit the crime and there were issues with his trial. They decided to take up the cause and share it on their site in 1998. 2 years later, a law firm saw what they had put out and got involved and over 18 years worked for free to help Jimmy get his freedom. Anything else we should know about PR/Marketing? Authenticity – make sure you are authentic and show as you are. Do it. Don't be afraid to get out there. Best Quote: Don't dream it. Be it. Don't leave regrets. Give it a shot Tracy's Misfit 3: Learn to better manage your time between your business and personal life. We all have the same amount of time. It is critical make sure we use it in the best ways. Don't dream it. Be it. Don't leave regrets. Give it a shot. We didn't get this far to only get this far. Don't quit. Today's topic is PR...PR or "earned media" is very attractive. Authentic content and engagement that you dont have to pay for. Its like SEO for press.Sounds great? So why isn't everyone doing it? Because it's hard and expensive. As the host of a moderately successful podcast, I get a lot of pitches from PR firms and they're mostly awful. Or we've had clients hire PR firms and feel like they flushed $10K/mo down the toilet. So how do you do it right? Like many things, the answer might be Do It Yourself, at least at first. The attraction is clear. Who wouldn't want to be featured in Wirecutter, GQ, Engadget, Techcrunch, Forbes, CNN, Wall Street Journal, or even huge YouTube channels like iJustine. Our guest today has, and he's going to tell us how to do it.Our guest today has been doing PR for eight years as part of his role at NOMAD GOODS. We're joined by listener & recurring guest Chuck Melber.
