TCW Podcast Episode 223 - D&D & Video Games 2E In the second part of our exploration of Dungeons & Dragons and its connection to video games, we examine the game's refinement and rise in popularity. D&D was a groundbreaking experience, brought to life through Gary Gygax's collaboration with others, particularly Dave Arneson, who developed many of its foundational concepts. The game evolved from miniature wargaming focused on medieval combat, with Tolkien-inspired high fantasy elements added later as an afterthought. These fantasy rules closely resembled those of Rules for Middle Earth but weren't universally embraced, as some players preferred the realism of traditional wargaming, making it challenging to satisfy both audiences. We also delve into the well-known controversy between Gygax and Arneson and the creation of the Blackmoor campaign setting. We explore how TSR released the original box set and then evolved it into AD&D. Additionally, we examine how RPGs began to take off as a whole new type of game that people could play. Finally, we look at how D&D became embroiled in the cultural backlash of the 1980s "Satanic Panic." Joe wraps up OSR October by exploring Dave Arneson's trade system for Blackmoor. From there, he delves into the evolution of trade mechanics in early RPGs, including the classic Traveller game. Finally he talks about his own system to handle mercantile trade by players characters in D&D and other fantasy role-playing games. Key topics covered: Blackmoor's Trade Mechanics: Discover Dave Arneson's approach to trade. Judges Guild's Trade System: Explore the foundations of trade in RPGs. Traveller's Trade System: Learn from one of the most influential space RPGs. Rolemaster's approach to handling speculative trading. Joe's home-grown solution. Journey back to the early days of D&D with this look at random wilderness generation in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor campaign. In this episode, Joe explores the approach to wilderness creation used by one of the pioneers of role-playing games. Discover how Arneson combined random tables with detailed descriptions to bring the world of Blackmoor to life. Share your thoughts via:
For OSR October, Joe explores Dave Arneson's original reward system that he used in his Blackmoor while developing Dungeons & Dragons. Unlike the familiar XP system of modern D&D, Blackmoor required players to spend gold in order to gain experience points. Discover this strange and fascinating peek into the origins of the hobby, and how these mechanics differed from the more traditional approaches we see in modern RPGs. Happy gaming! Happy life! Welcome back to OSR October! This week, Joe dives deep into the original magic system used in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor, the proto-Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Blackmoor's magic system is very different from what we see in modern D&D. Here, magic users don't memorize spells – they create potions and other formulaic concoctions that need to be prepared beforehand. These ingredients can be dangerous or difficult to find, and spells are single-use! Joe also shares his fascination with single-use magic and mentions his own homebrew rules for creating magical items that are used up after a single cast. Do you think single-use magic could be interesting? Would you try running a game with this system? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Episode 178 Streamed Live Tuesday February 13, 2024 Main Topic: Who is the true Dungeon Master…Gary or Dave? A review of two documentaries: 1.) Secrets of Blackmoor: A Tue History of Dungeons & Dragons https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9301886/plotsummary/?ref_=tt_ov_pl 2.) The Dreams in Gary's Basement https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10621206/ Both movies painted their respective subjects in a good light Blackmoor for Mr Arneson's part and Dreams for Mr Gygax. However neither treated the other's subject in a bad light, letting the ages old schism remain in the past. Both mostly focused on the positive contributions each paid to our hobby. Secrets of Blackmoor went into great detail about how the tabletop RPG hobby sprung from war gaming, largely though Dave Arneson's efforts. Dreams focused on Gary Gygax's similar journey detailing the rise and fall of TSR and its eventual purchase by Wizards of The Coast. In light of these two documentaries, it seems the hobby owes it existence to both of these visionaries, though it is uncertain as to who gets top billing. At this point it hardly matters. Modules or Roll Your own? Modules/Pre-packaged Adventures Advantages: all encounters and stats done for you, plot ready to go, read-n-run (???), nice maps & visuals, and can dovetail with your own ideas(can even steal them from modules) and they can be fun to read. Disadvantages: may not fit your group, too railroad-y, costly($?), may need to shoe horn the current campaign/party situation into the adventure( Slavers series??/), politicization of games could creep in and long adventure paths/modules can be a lot to read and prepare even though it is all laid out for you. Rolling Your Own Advantages: easier to prep(theoretically), can react on the fly w/o worry of “messing” up the adventure, do not have to spend time reading, allows you infinite freedom and you can tailor it to your group from the start. Disadvantages: must make your own maps & prep time/write stats( ?), may need to use monster books/charts/random tables and “wing'in it” can result in non-sensical situations ( “ an aboleth, that doesn't make any sense!”), inspiration can run dry, Big Geek Con 2: get ticket at - https://tabletop.events/conventions/big-geek-con-2024 September 20-22, 2024/$30 for those who are 13+ Parents must be always with their children. They Mostly Podcast at Night - Horror Movie Reviews with Chaos and Carnage
This week, Carnage takes us to a Gothic mansion where a school for troubled but gifted young women is harboring dark secrets! Down A Dark Hall is a film adaptation of the Lois Duncan novel of the same name which follows the story of Kit, a teen girl whose parents are at their wits end due to her constant acting out. Her psychologist has seemingly found an answer to their problems in the form of the Blackmoor boarding school run by Madame Durant, who promises to draw out and develop Kit's latent talent. But her methods and motives are sinister indeed, and Kit soon finds that the beautiful halls are more oppressive than inspiring. She becomes a piano virtuoso practically overnight, though she and the other girls at the school suffer from missing time, obsessive devotion to their creative pursuits, losing touch with reality, voices that speak only to them, and ghastly apparitions that roam the halls at night. Will Kit be able to regain control of her life before it's too late, and how will she confront the dark forces conspiring to tear them all apart?! https://linktr.ee/podcastatnight https://theymostlypodcastatnight.com https://morbidlybeautiful.com/podcasts

In the summer of 1973, as Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax worked to complete the manuscript for D&D, Greg Svenson was given a play-test copy of that novel new game. He used those rules to create his own adventure dungeon. Tonisborg is the second oldest Mega Dungeon to come out of the Twin Cities group. Svenson and Arneson placed the dungeon in the world of Blackmoor, where Vestfold is located today. Sadly, several years later all copies of the maps were thought lost or destroyed. The maps came to be known as "The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg," or "Tonisborg" for short. Decades later, during production of the documentary, Secrets of Blackmoor, a mysterious set of ten old dungeon maps was uncovered - these turned out to be photocopies of Svenson's originals. Dan & Paul chat with Griffith Morgan about the new upcoming Kickstarter for the Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg! In 1971, Greg Svenson and his friends took part in the very first dungeon adventure game, Blackmoor, created by their friend, Dave Arneson. Then, in the summer of 1973, as Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax worked to complete the manuscript for Dungeons & Dragons, Greg was given a play-test copy of this novel new game. He used these rules to create his own adventure dungeon, The Dungeons of Tonisborg. One day, Greg loaned his maps to a friend to make copies. An unexpected disaster struck: the maps, stowed in an old magazine, were thrown away. All ten original map levels of Greg's epic mega-dungeon were thought lost forever. This lost map set came to be known as The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg among the "Blackmoor Bunch." Thirty-five years later, during the making of the documentary film, Secrets of Blackmoor, a mysterious set of photocopied dungeon maps was unearthed. D. H. Boggs emailed copies to Greg Svenson, who instantly recognized his own handwriting, declaring that these old photocopies were indeed copies of his original Tonisborg Dungeon. Now published with extensive background information, The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg is not like any RPG Game Module you've ever encountered before. Paul & Dan chat about the history of attempts to remove the DM from D&D games. The Dungeon Master (DM) assumes the role of the game master or referee and describes for other players what they perceive in this imaginary world, and what effects their actions have. That person is responsible for preparing each game session, and must have a thorough understanding of the game rules. The DM is responsible for narrative flow, creating the scenario and setting in which the game takes place, maintaining the pace and providing dynamic feedback. In storyteller role, the DM is responsible for describing the events of the D&D game session and making rulings about game situations and effects based on the decisions made by the players. The DM can develop the adventure plot and setting in which these PCs participate or use a preexisting module. This is typically designed as a type of decision tree that is followed by the players, and a customized version can require several hours of preparation for each hour spent playing the game. The DM serves as the arbiter of the rules, both in teaching the rules to the players and in enforcing them. The rules provide game mechanics for resolving the outcome of events, including how the player's characters interact with the game world. Although the rules exist to provide a balanced game environment, the DM is free to ignore the rules as needed. The DM can modify, remove, or create entirely new rules in order to fit the rules to the current campaign. Given all that -- it can be hard work to be a DM, and sometimes harder still to find a good one! The history of Dungeons & Dragons is littered with attempts to find ways to play without DM. We'll discuss the Blackmoor group's Dungeon! game, game books, computer games, DM-less games, and more. Corals Soapbox EP 1Welcome to Episode 1 of Corals Soapbox. Coral Drouyn was the Script Writer/Script Editor/Storyliner and Story Editor on Prisoner. Coral has been involved in the entertainment industry since a young child and is also an actress and singer. Coral is a huge part of the Australian TV industry working on shows such as Neighbours, Home and Away, Blue Heelers, Streetsmartz, Pacific Drive, Chuck Finn. In this episode Matt dropped a surprise question on Coral about the character Cynthia Leach who was played by the late great Beverley Dunn. Matt was curious to find out why we never saw more of Cynthia Leach on Prisoner and why we never saw Cynthia at Blackmoor which Coral explains to us why. This episode is focused on characters and the characters that Coral created on Prisoner, why she created them, why some don't have a happy ending, how she structures characters, why we need that character, background story, emotional investment in a character and why some must be written out. Coral spoke with Matt why she had to write out Maurie Fields character Len Murphy and how characters like Len could start to overshadow the main characters like Joan Ferguson. Coral talks about the creation of Marlene Warren played by Genevieve Lemon, Coral talks about where the idea came from for creating Marlene, and why Coral gave Marlene the perfect ending with the marriage to Matt Delaney who was played by Peter Bensley. Coral wrote the wedding vows for the wedding and has a story behind where the vows came from and how popular the vows were at the time. The subject of this character also brings up important discussion between Matt and Coral about body shaming. Coral and Matt spoke about the three male Prisoners coming into the show and why they came into the show. Coral talks about why fans either love or hate a character. Coral and Matt then discuss the creation of Lexi Patterson who was played by Pepe Trevor, Coral spoke about Marie Trevor's thoughts on Pepe being cast for the part. Coral tells why she had Lexie dressed as Boy George and where the idea came from, Matt asked Coral's thoughts on the escape storyline for Lexie as Coral had left Prisoner by that stage. The next character Coral talks about is Reb Kean who was played by Janet Andrewartha which was one of Corals favourite characters. Coral drew inspiration from James Dean and the movie Rebel Without a Cause and even had Janet have her hair cut to look like James and where the idea for Reb to be holding a comb with her. Coral tells a story that she has never told before about what the original storyline was meant to be for Trevor Kent played by Frank Burke and why Grundy's would not allow Corals idea for her storyline. Glenda shared some stories and memories of working with Ian Doig who played slasher and filming those scenes with the CB radios. We broke down some iconic scenes that Glenda appeared in including the fight against Joan Ferguson in the Lou Kelly Riot episodes and what it was like to film those episodes and we also discussed the Blackmoor period and working with Ray Meagher. #glendalinscott #ritaconnors #cellblockh #wentworth

Dan hosts special guests Greg Svenson (a.k.a "The Great Svenny" from Dave Arneson's Blackmoor) and D&D archaeologist D.H. Boggs to talk about their presentation of "The Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg". How can there be a D&D dungeon that predates D&D ever being published? Because Greg was in on the ground floor and made his dungeon before the public knew D&D was coming to change the world. Let's dig into that early creation and the story of its rediscovery! Order a copy of the Lost Dungeons of Tonisborg here Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. Comparing the pros and cons of every edition from the 1974 Original D&D little brown books to cutting-edge releases for 5E D&D today, we broadcast live on YouTube and Twitch so we can take viewer questions and comments on the topic of the day. In Folge 5 gibt es ein Gespräch über die wichtigsten D&D Welten: Blackmoor, Greyhawk, Die Vergessenen Reiche, Dragonlance, Eberron, Ravenloft, Exandria, Theros und Ravnica.
Dan & Paul get to chat with Griffith M. Morgan III, Writer and Directors of the Secrets of Blackmoor film — documenting Griff’s 6-year epic series of investigations and interviews with all the personalities around the Twin Cities gaming scene, Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor campaign, and the earliest inception of TTRPGs as we know it. We get to hear Griff’s ultimate takeaways from how things were done in the earliest days, thoughts about how D&D changed as a commercial product, looseness and customization of the DM playstyle, and evolutions over the years. Celebrating the 50 anniversary of Arneson inventing Blackmoor and dungeon-crawling RPGs! Visit the Secrets of Blackmoor website for blogs & updates on release of the film — https://www.secretsofblackmoor.com/ Wandering DMs Paul Siegel and Dan “Delta” Collins host thoughtful discussions on D&D and other TTRPGs every week. Griff Morgan is a writer, director, and gamer whose collaboration on the “Secrets of Blackmoor” film - released in 2019 - has shone a bright light on the origins of roleplaying games rooted in the work of David Wesley and Dave Arneson. About three weeks ago now, I hopped onto Skype for a chat with Griff, ostensibly to talk about Good versus Evil. As chance would have it, a few days earlier I had received my Backer's .PDF of the Tonisborg draft - a bonus book that was part of the Kickstarter for Secrets of Blackmoor - and our conversation began by chatting about that project. I wanted to extract this part of the conversation and share it separately from the much longer discussion that came later. So, here it is… and I'll be working on the second part of this to share in a few weeks time, pressures of work and life permitting. That's the background. What does insurance, J.R.R. Tolkien, HG Wells, and the Civil War have in common? They created a perfect storm for the advent of Dungeons and Dragons. Sure, D&D might not be directly impactful on the History of Computing. But it's impacts are far and wide. The mechanics have inspired many a game. And the culture impact can be seen expansively across the computer gaming universe. D&D came of age during the same timeframe that the original PC hackers were bringing their computers to market. But how did it all start? We'll leave the history of board games to the side, given that Chess sprang up in northern India over 1500 years ago, spreading first to the Persian empire and then to Spain following the Moorish conquest of that country. And given that card games go back to a time before the Tang Dynasty in 9th century China. And Gary Gygax, the co-creator and creative genius behind D&D loved playing chess, going back to playing with his grandfather as a young boy. Instead, we'll start this journey in 1780 with Johann Christian Ludwig Hellwig, who invented the first true war-game to teach military strategy. It was good enough to go commercial. Then Georg Julis Venturini made a game in 1796, then Opiz in 1806, then Kriegsspiel in 1824, which translates from German to wargame. And thus the industry was born. There were a few dozen other board games but in 1913, Little Wars, by HG Wells, added hollow lead figures, ornately painted, and distance to bring us into the era of miniature wargaming. Infantry moved a foot, cavalry moved two, and artillery required other troops to be around it. You fought with spring loaded cannons and other combat resulted in a one to one loss usually, making the game about trying to knock troops out while they were setting up their cannons. It was cute, but in the years before World War II, many sensed that the release of a war game by the pacifist Wells was a sign of oncoming doom. Indeed it was. But each of these inventors had brought their own innovations to the concept. And each impacted real war, with wargaming being directly linked to the blitzkrieg. Not a lot happened in innovative new Wargames between Wells and the 1950s. Apparently the world was busy fighting real war games. But Jack Scruby started making figures in 1955 and connecting communities, writing a book called All About Wargames in 1957. Then Gettysburg was created by Charles Roberts and released by Avalon Hill, which he founded, in 1958. It was a huge success and attracted a lot of enthusiastic if not downright obsessed players. In the game, you could play the commanders of the game, like Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Meade, and many others. You had units of varying sizes and a number of factors could impact the odds of battle. The game mechanics were complex, and it sparked a whole movement of war games that slowly rose through the 60s and 70s. One of those obsessed gamers was Gary Gygax, an insurance underwriter, who started publishing articles and magazines, Gygax started a the Lake Geneva Wargames Convention in 1968, which has since moved to Indianapolis after a pitstop in Milwaukee and now brings in upwards of 30,000 attendees. Gygax collaborated with his friend Jeff Perren on a game they released in 1970 called Chainmail. Chaimail got a supplement that introduced spells, magic items, dwarves, and hobbits - which seems based on Tolkien novels, but according to Gygax was more a composite of a lot of pulp novels, including one of his favorite, the Conan series. 1970 turned out to be a rough year, as Gygax got laid off from the insurance company and had a family with a wife and 5 kids to support. That's when he started making games as a career. At first, it didn't pay too well, but he started making games and published Chainmail with Guidon Games which started selling a whopping 100 copies a month. At the time, they were using 6 sided dice but other numbering systems worked better. They started doing 1-10 or 1-20 random number generation by throwing poker chips in a coffee can, but then Gary found weird dice in a school supply catalog and added the crazy idea of a 20 sided dice. Now a symbol found on t-shirts and a universal calling card of table top gamers. At about the same time University of Minnesota history student, Dave Arneson met Gygax at Gencon and took Chainmail home to the Twin Cities and started improving the rules, releasing his own derivative game called Blackmoor. He came back to Gencon the next year after testing the system and he and Gygax would go on to collaborate on an updated and expanded set of rules. Gygax would codify much of what Arneson didn't want to codify, as Arneson found lawyer balling rules to be less fun from a gameplay perspective. But Gary, the former underwriter, was a solid rule-maker and thus role-playing games were born, in a game first called The Fantasy Game. Gary wrote a 50 page instruction book, which by 1973 had evolved into a 150-page book. He shopped it to a number of game publishers, but none had a book that thick or could really grock the concept of role-playing. Especially one with concepts borrowed from across the puIn the meantime, Gygax had been writing articles and helping others with games, and doing a little cobbling on the side. Because everyone needs shoes. And so in 1973, Gygax teamed up with childhood friend Don Kaye and started Tactical Studies Rules, which would evolve into TSR, witch each investing $1,000. They released Cavaliers and Roundheads on the way to raising the capital to publish the game they were now calling… Dungeons and Dragons. The game evolved further and in 1974 they put out 1,000 copies of in a boxed set. To raise more capital they brought in Brian Blume, who invested 2,000 more dollars. Sales of that first run were great, but Kaye passed away in 1975 and Blume's dad stepped in to buy his shares. They started Dragon magazine, opened The Dungeon Hobby Shop and started hiring people. The game continued to grow, with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons being released with a boatload of books. They entered what we now call a buying tornado and by 1980, sales were well over 8 million dollars. But in 1979 James Egbert, a Michigan State Student, disappeared. A private eye blamed Dungeons and Dragons. He later popped up in Louisiana but the negative publicity had already started. Another teen, Irving Pulling committed suicide in 1982 and his mom blamed D&D and then started a group called Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons, or BADD. There's no such thing as bad publicity though and sales hit $30 million by 83. In fact, part of the allure for many, including the crew I played with as a kid, was that it got a bad wrap in some ways… At this point Gary was in Hollywood getting cartoons made of Dungeons and Dragons and letting the Blume's run the company. But they'd overspent and nearing bankruptcy due to stupid spending, Gygax had to return to Lake Geneva to save the company, which he did by releasing the first book in a long time, one of my favorite D&D books, Unearthed Arcana. Much drama running the company ensued, which isn't pertinent to the connection D&D has to computing but basically Gary got forced out and the company lost touch with players because it was being run by people who didn't really like gamers or gaming. 2nd edition D&D wasn't a huge success But in 1996, Wizards of the Coast bought TSR. They had made a bundle off of Magic The Gathering and now that TSR was in the hands of people who loved games and gamers again, they immediately started looking for ways to reinvigorate the brand - which their leadership had loved. 3rd edition open gaming license was published by Wizards of the Coast and allowed third-part publishers to make material compatible with D&D products using what was known as the d20 System Trademark License. Fourth edition came along and in 2008 but that open gaming License was irrevocable so most continued using it over the new Game System License, which had been more restrictive. By 2016 when 5th edition came along, this is all felt similar to what we've seen with Apache, BSD, and MIT licenses, with TSR moving back to the Open Gaming License which had been so popular. Now let's connect Dungeons and Dragons to the impact on Computing. In 1975, Will Crowther was working at Bolt, Beranek, and Newman. He'd been playing some of those early copies of Dungeons and Dragons and working on natural language processing. The two went together like peanut butter and chocolate and out popped something that tasted a little like each, a game called Colossal Cave Adventure. If you played Dungeons and Dragons, you'll remember drawing countless maps on graph paper. Adventure was like that and loosely followed Kentucky's Mammoth Cave system, given that Crowther was an avid caver. It ran on a PDP-10, and as those spread, so spread the fantasy game, getting updated by Stanford grad student Don Woods in 1976. Now, virtual words weren't just on table tops, but they sprouted up in Rogue and by the time I got to college, there were countless MUDs or Multi-User Dungeons where you could kill other players. Mattel shipped the Dungeons & Dragons Computer Fantasy Game in 1981 then Dungeon! For the Apple II and another dozen or so games over the the years. These didn't directly reflect the game mechanics of D&D though. But Pool of Raidance, set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of D&D popped up for Nintentendo and PCs in 1988, with dozens of D&D games shipping across a number of campaign settings. You didn't have to have your friends over to play D&D any more. Out of that evolved Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs, including EverQuest, Ultima Online, Second Life, Dungeons and Dragons, Dark Age of Camelot, Runescape, and more. Even more closely aligned with the Dungeons and Dragons game mechanics you also got Matrix online, Star Wars Old Republic, Age of Conan and the list goes on. Now, in the meantime, Wizardy had shipped in 1981, Dragon Warrior shipped in 1986, and the Legend of Zelda had shipped in 1986 as well. And these represented an evolution on a simpler set of rules but using the same concepts. Dragon Warrior had started as Dragon Quest after the creators played Wizardy for the first time. These are only a fraction of the games that used the broad concepts of hit points, damage, probability of attack, including practically every first person shooter ever made, linking nearly every video game created that includes combat, to Dungeons and Dragons if not through direct inspiration, through aspects of game mechanics. Dungeons and Dragons also impacted media, appearing in movies like Mazes and Monsters, an almost comedic look at playing the game, ET, where I think I first encountered the game, reinvigorating Steven Jackson to release nearly the full pantheon of important Tolkien works, Krull, The Dark Crystal, The Princess Bride, Pathfinder, Excalibur, Camelot, and even The Last Witch Hunter, based off a Vin Diesel character he had separation anxiety with. The genre unlocked the limitations placed on the creativity by allowing a nearly unlimited personalization of characters. It has touched every genre of fiction and non-fiction. And the game mechanics are used not only for D&D but derivatives are also used for a variety of other industries. The impact Dungeons and Dragons had on geek culture stretches far and wide. The fact that D&D rose to popularity as many felt the geeks were taking over, with the rise of computing in general and the reinvention of entire economies, certainly connects it to so many aspects of our lives, whether realized or not. So next time you pick up that controller and hit someone in a game to do a few points of damage, next time you sit in a fantasy movie, next time you watch Game of Thrones, think about this. Once upon a time, there was a game called Chainmail. And someone came up with slightly better game mechanics. And that collaboration led to D&D. Now it is our duty to further innovate those mechanics in our own way. Innovation isn't replacing manual human actions with digital actions in a business process, it's upending the business process or industry with a whole new model. Yet, the business process usually needs to be automated to free us to rethink the model. Just like the creators of D&D did. If an insurance underwriter can have such an outsized impact on the world in the 1970s, what kind of impact could you be having today. Roll a d20 and find out! If you roll a 1, repeat the episode. Either way, have a great day, we're lucky you decided to listen in!

William Cullen Bryant wrote, “There is no glory in star or blossom till looked upon by a loving eye; There is no fragrance in April breezes till breathed with joy as they wander by.” That pretty much sums up what happens with the plants I’ve dubbed "double-takes". A double-take plant is the one you first ignore or blow off - but them something about them causes you to take another look; to appreciate what you didn’t see the first time around. Until the first spring I saw Lungwort in bloom, I never looked at it with a loving eye. But then, that very first time I saw it in bloom, it about knocked me over. THAT BLOOM Bluey-purpley-pinky little delicate thing. It took my breath away; Pulmonaria making me need a Pulmonologist. I suddenly didn’t mind the speckled foliage. And now? Now, I love it. It’s a classic double-take plant. Brevities #OTD Buried on this day, 381 years ago, in the churchyard of St Mary at Lambeth, alongside his son; the gardener John Tradescant the elder. My mom gave me a Graham Stuart Thomas for my first gardening book, so very special Our best selling plant of 2015? At number 1 (drum roll) - Eryngium Graham Stuart Thomas. Flower spike on yucca in border. GST used them as punctuation marks in design. Love being married to someone who knows what I mean when I say, “Bring me Graham Stuart Thomas" #OTD Physicianand botanist James McBride was born in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, in 1784. As a babe, he was left an orphan. With nothing to his name, he managed to get an education through what his Yale biography called "indefatigable industry and perseverance”. Trained as a doctor, he spent his free time pursuing his passion: botany. He wrote papers to the Linnean Society and other scientific journals. His personal friend, Dr. Stephen Elliott, named the Macbridia pulcrafor McBride. He also dedicated the second volume of his Sketch of the Botany of South Carolina and Georgiato McBride’s memory: "[James was] a gentleman who, uniting great sagacity to extensive and accurate botanical knowledge, has made the medical properties of our plants a subject of careful investigation. Profoundly skilled in his profession… he fell victim to the fatigues and exposure of an extensive [medical] practice. In the midst of a brilliant career, with prospects of increasing usefulness and extended reputation” James McBride died at the age of 33 trying to help stop an epidemic of yellow fever in Charleston, South Carolina on September 21, 1817. #OTD American botanist and plant collector Adolph Daniel Edward Elmer died. He was born in 1870 in Van Dyne, Wisconsin. Elmer got degrees from the Washington Agricultural College, and Stanford University. He collected plants in the Philippines from 1904 to 1927. Kew Gardens shared that in 1919 Elmer’s notes stated “ I ... collected [plant specimens] on the Bulusan (“Bah-loo-sahn”) volcano which has recently become active and..may cause the total destruction of its vegetation.” Elmer was editor of "Leaflets of Philippine Botany”. In that publication, he documented more than 1,500 new species. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Adolph Elmer and his wife, Emma, ignored the pleas from their extended family to leave American-controlled Manila. Elmer was killed on April 17, 1942 after being captured by Japanese forces in the Battle of Bataan. His wife, Emma, survived both the battle and the Death March. She returned to the United States after the war. Unearthed Words #OTD Naturalist Gilbert White wrote in his Journal in Selborne, England on April 17, 1789 : Five gallons of french brandy from London. Cucumbers show fruit in bloom. Cuculus cuculat: the voice of the cuckoo is heard in Blackmoor woods. Sowed hollyhocks, columbines, snapdragons, stocks, mignonette, all from S. Lambeth, in a bed in the garden: also Sweet Williams, & Canterbury bells. Today's book recommendation Three Gardens: The Personal Odyssey of a Great Plantsman and Gardener Hardcover by Graham Stuart Thomas In this reprint of a 1983 book, venerable English horticulturist, painter, and writer Graham Stuart Thomas recounts his journey from his first garden to the present day, charmingly describing the three gardens he has owned and the plants he has tended in each. Includes some 750 plant profiles, eight plant portraits painted by the author, and (poorly reproduced) color and b&w photographs, also by the author. Distributed by Timber Press. Today's Garden Chore Try growing the annual mignonette (“Meen-no-net”). In "The Favorites of the Flower Garden”, Linnean Society Fellow George William Francisand first director of the Adelaide Botanic Gardenwrote “This simple and attractive weed, which is the envy of the [...] glittering throng that surrounds it in a garden, and which has no rivalry [...] except [...] the Rose and Violet, is one of the first flowers that we learn to gather, and the very last that we cease to value.” Floret's description of mignonette seeds says that: Napoleon sent mignonette seeds from Egypt to France for his darling Empress Josephine in the early 1800’s. Long wispy stems are capped with creamy white flowers with a delicate orange center that smells like vanilla. Flowers fade, leaving behind green, lantern-like pods. A great textural ingredient for bouquets and a favorite with pollinators, mignonette is suited for the border as well as containers. Mignonette means “little darling” in French. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart OTD in 2018 Sam Postlethwait, a retired Purdue University botany professor, turned 100 years old. His apartment overlooks the Celery Bog Nature Area. Every morning, Sam wakes up and looks out his window at the three different ecosystems before him: the prairie, the woods, and the celery bog. On his walks, he documents what he sees with a Nikon camera; creating booklets filled with photos collected through the years. He says, "It is incredible that we have this right here in our city, and the only way you can understand this treasure is by a routine walk. And then you see life. You see life starting and you see life continuing and you see life ending, and you begin to understand living things interacting in nature.” Sam taught freshman botany for 35 years at Purdue. He was married to his wife Sara for 69 years. When she died in 2010, they had lived by the Celery Bog for almost a decade. Sam reflected on his life there, saying, "to have had eight years here with my Sara has just been wonderful. A spider's life is not much different than ours, If I live, something has to die. We cannot live without things dying." Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we bust out our dice bags, make a saving throw, channel our inner geeks, and talk about the grandfather of role playing games, Dungeons and Dragons. Dungeons and Dragons is considered the first ever true character-driven RPG, and the notions such as experience points and leveling up a character that are so ubiquitous in all gaming these days came from this very game. In fact, most of it came from one man—Gary Gygax. Gygax, along with is co-creator David Arneson, modified a few older games (I’m looking at you Chainmail and Blackmoor) and created the first version of D&D. They printed it locally, off of borrowed money, and were lucky to sell 1000 copies. However, by 2004, the game had spawned feature films, a Saturday morning kid’s cartoon, countless video games, New York Times Best Seller books, and over a billion dollars in sales. But this growth of the game was not without its controversies. For example, David Arneson had to sue the company he and Gygax created (TSR) to keep control of the intellectual property. He was allowed to maintain a hold on anything called Dungeons and Dragons. And then, TSR split the property and focused on the new version of the same game Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, leaving Arneson a comfortable monthly payment but no real royalties. There was also the time Gygax had somehow gotten Orson Welles to agree to be in a Hollywood produced D&D movie until he discovered that the CEO of TSR had made the company go broke buying too many company cars and trying to raise the wreck of an old pirate ship from the bottom of the sea (like you do…). But the ups and downs of the corporation itself couldn’t compare to the great Satanic Panic that came around in the 1980s, linking the game to murder, suicide, and mental health issues—not to mention Satan himself! Televangelists attacked Gygax, TSR, and the game, and Tom Hanks even starred in the espically bad Mazes and Monsters based on the true story of a 16 year old’s suicide at the University of Michigan. So, what do Brent and Brad think of the game, and would they be willing to play it? What happened the one time that Dave spoke with Gary Gygax on the phone? What is Dave’s favorite edition of the game? What is the truth about Dungeons and Dragons and suicide rates in teens? What actors and musicians praise the game and why? Listen, laugh, learn.
Shane Plays Podcast Extra: Secrets of Blackmoor: The True History of Dungeons & Dragons This is a Shane Plays podcast extra, featuring content that was not broadcast as part of the live Shane Plays radio show. Accidental gaming historian M. Griffith ("Griff") discusses the Secrets of Blackmoor documentary, a five year project involving 10 cities, 200 hours of interviews, and 20,000 photos and documents. It looks like Stanton's experiments were more successful than we thought. He didn't just make monsters, though, and it seems that Zero is playing nice with the others. Though, I have to admit, her closeness with Blackmoor is concerning, and I still think we need to get rid of her. I know you like to dangle her in the Mother's face, but frankly, she seems like more trouble than she's worth. Zero, though? Yeah, Zero has a lot of potential. Her powers are progressing quickly. I do wonder how long she can keep the side effects of that under control. I think it will be very, very interesting when she finally gets a… taste. She doesn't know what it is, yet, but she's determined to find out. Frankly, I don't know how long I can keep her from it. This week, the team takes some time for themselves. Some try to relax. Others start in on work that needs to be done. Some look for answers, worried what might be found

The lovely server Mallory discusses three courses spaced perfectly during the meal. The White Bean & Kale Soup is creamy with chickpea and roasted red pepper rouille. The Homemade Pumpkin Ricotta Crostini topped with a fig balsamic is yum. The second course is a salad of Willow Wisp Farm Bibb Lettuce sourced locally. The third course offers meat, seafood and vegetarian selections. Mallory recommends Dijon & Panko Crusted Jamison Lamb Rack. The Vegetable-based Roasted Mushroom Stroganoff is made with shitaki, maitaki and oyster mushrooms served over quinoa pasta that melts in your mouth. Roasted Cauliflower Steak is just as satisfying for meat lovers. Before the meal chef Josh Tomson, who went to French culinary school has incorporated the Amuse Bouche starter, meaning “entertainment for the mouth.” It's a little tiny tasting to awaken your senses for the main course. Leave room for dessert. The Caramel Apple Cheesecake is made with caramel corn crust from popped corn. For chocaholics don't miss their Black Cocoa Forest Cake.
