Disney is so familiar that it's easy to stop seeing it. That's why our conversation with Dr Jill Peterfeso hits so hard: when you treat Disney parks and media as a serious case study, the “obvious” becomes fascinating again. Jill is a published professor at Guilford College and the co-editor of Why The Magic Matters: Discovering Disney As A Laboratory For Learning, and she shows how Disney studies can train the same skills students need everywhere: careful observation, critical thinking, and the ability to hold nuance without falling into cynicism. We talk about what it looks like to bring undergrads into the parks for hands-on fieldwork, from tracking sound and scent to noticing how color, food presentation, and cast member interactions guide emotion and behavior. We dig into the book's dialectics like magic and strategy and nostalgia and innovation, and why “engineered” experiences can still create real tears during Happily Ever After. Jill also explains how religious studies approaches Disney through story, ritual, and fandom practices, and how Disney's role in American cultural history shapes what we remember and who gets centered. The conversation goes deeper with chapters on environmental themes in Walt Disney's work, the way early Disneyland helped “make” history for millions of viewers, and a powerful disability studies chapter that blends lived experience with analysis of accessibility in the built environment. If you've ever wondered why Disney feels different, why people argue about it so intensely, or what the parks reveal about us, you'll get a lot to chew on here.Subscribe so you don't miss next week, share this with a Disney fan who loves thinking deeply, and leave us a rating and review to help other listeners find the show. You can find more about Jill at https://www.guilford.edu/profile/peterfesojm, and you can find Why the Magic Matters from Bloomsbury Academic Publishing at Amazon (https://a.co/d/05UqzSNy) and other booksellers.----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. Funding white supremacy is a core, not incidental, function of the modern capitalist state in the U.S. It is also the title of economist Robert B. Williams' 2025 book, Funding White Supremacy: Federal Wealth Policies and the Modern Racial Wealth Gap.Bob and Steve share the fundamental position that capitalism doesn't just produce inequality by accident, it builds durable ladders for some and trapdoors for others. Wealth, not income, is the key instrument because it is power that reproduces itself across generations.Bob lays out the major policy mechanism of stealth wealth-building: how the federal government subsidizes asset accumulation through the tax code, especially via “tax expenditures” (deductions, exclusions, preferential treatment) that provide vast benefits to the wealthy. From an MMT perspective, the conversation underlines a crucial point: the state's problem is not “finding the money,” it's choosing who gets the public subsidy. A system that claims scarcity around public goods reliably mobilizes massive policy support for private asset appreciation and wealth compounding. In other words, benefits reward ownership and existing assets, not the people struggling to acquire them.Bob situates this historically, tracing the origins of the modern income and estate tax era to the early 20th century and argues that any progressive policy history coexisted with, and was intertwined with, overt white supremacist politics.Robert B. Williams is the Stedman Professor of Economics, Guilford College. Bob has taught economics and political economy for over 40 years. He has written three books, including Funding White Supremacy: Federal Wealth Policies and the Modern Racial Wealth Gap (Cambridge University Press, 2025).

This reprise of a story from “Twists and Turns” is not exactly a spirited Christmas story, but it is holiday-”adjacent” (to borrow a wonderful phrase from Nick Sipe in his story in “Foolhardy”). It is a story about good intentions and learning about the lives of others, which is the essence of empathy, we suppose, something we can all use more of and offer more often when we can. —Happy Holidays from “6-minute Stories” podcast and the Personal Story Publishing Project.“The Bus Children” – She looked like an angel. We'd meant to make the children happy. In this episode of the First Day Podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D. welcomes Danny Gatling, Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Relations at Guilford College, to discuss strategies for fundraising with limited resources. With many nonprofits operating on tight budgets, Danny shares insights on how organizations can creatively maximize their impact by leveraging technology and adopting innovative fundraising techniques. He emphasizes that being resourceful is essential, especially for smaller institutions and organizations. A key theme in their discussion is the use of technology to streamline operations. Danny describes how his team employed project management tools and automation to simplify processes like donor acknowledgments and correspondence. This "virtual conveyor belt" approach has freed up staff time for other critical activities. He notes that many of these technologies are surprisingly affordable, with tools costing as little as $5 per month, ensuring that even budget-conscious organizations can benefit from these efficiencies. Danny also explores the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in fundraising. He explains how AI tools can assist with writing donor letters, analyzing donor data to target key prospects, and developing customized strategies for engagement. While addressing concerns about AI being “cheating,” Danny clarifies that AI serves as a starting point, enabling fundraisers to focus on higher-level relationship-building tasks. He stresses that investing in subscription-based AI tools provides greater value and scalability for nonprofits. The conversation shifts to the importance of building relationships with diverse donor bases through affinity groups—such as alumni of color, LGBTQIA+ networks, or even academic groups like biology graduates. Danny highlights how cultivating these smaller, organically formed communities can lead to larger networks of support. He advises fundraisers to engage with affinity groups thoughtfully, emphasizing that understanding their interests and values can create lasting, mutually beneficial partnerships. This people-centered approach, Danny notes, remains the heart of successful fundraising, even in a world increasingly driven by technology.

I'm honored to be joined by mentor and friend, Anthony Gurley, for episode 120. Anthony spent thirty years at his alma mater, Guilford College, as the Director of Financial Aid, retiring in 2009. He recently published his first book, Deadly Dilemma: A Memoir. I originally met Anthony through a scholarship and mentorship program he founded called Mo-T-Vation Ministry. Anthony would describe himself as just an ordinary guy with a story to tell, and I am so grateful that he has recorded his story in his new memoir. In Deadly Dilemma, Anthony unsparingly opens the doors to his journey in the hope that others might find a path to confronting their struggles and failures, and in the process, discover their life-saving answers to that bigger question. Are those moments of victory and success, happiness and joy, and peaks of cherishable memories sufficient in number, scope, magnitude, and frequency to outweigh the valleys of failure, disappointments, fear, and isolation, that often color the landscape of life?In our conversation we talk about what led Anthony to write Deadly Dilemma, and the power of reflecting on our own stories. Anthony shares the importance of Friends, Choices, and Consequences in life, and why it is critical to find our Anchors. May Anthony's story encourage you today! The full show notes are available on our website https://creativeimpactpodcast.com! Even after seventy-five years, the UN Security Council meets nearly every day. They respond to a range of threats to international peace and security, but not all threats. Why does the Security Council take up some issues for discussion and not others? What factors shape the Council's actions, if they take any action at all? Adapting insights from legislative bargaining, Bargaining in the UN Security Council: Setting the Global Agenda (Oxford UP, 2022) demonstrates that the agenda-setting powers granted in the institutional rules offer less powerful Council members the opportunity to influence the content of a resolution without jeopardizing its passage. The Council also decides when to conduct public or private diplomacy. The analysis shows how external factors like international and domestic public reactions motivate grandstanding behaviors and shape resolutions. New quantitative data on meetings and outside options provide support for these claims. The book also explores the dynamics of the formal analysis in three cases: North Korean nuclear proliferation, the negotiations leading up to NATO bombing in Serbia over Kosovo, and the elected member-led process to codify the principles of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine. The book argues that while the powerful veto members do have great influence over the Council, the rules of the most consequential security institution influence its policy outcomes, just as they do in any other international institution. Which states are the bellwethers in the upcoming election? Which states will give the clearest indication of the direction of the House and Senate? Who is showing up to vote that pollsters weren't expecting? And how will those voters who aren't considered "likely voters" change the results? How does a firm like Decision Desk HQ gather the information needed to make election calls as quickly as they do? (Answer: There are 50 states with 50 different ways to get the information.) What is a model? How are election models different from polls? What factors are considered to develop a model? What are some of the differences between DDHQ's model and other models such as fivethirtyeight's? How should we look at projections? We explore these questions and more with DDHQ's Senior Data Scientist Kiel Williams. Kiel Williams is a Senior Data Scientist at Decision Desk HQ. Decision Desk HQ collects, organizes, and reports election night results and provides election related data to media outlets, political organizations, and anyone interested in who votes and how they voted. Kiel specifically performs electoral analysis, polling and manages data operations at DDHQ.
