Was haben die weltberühmten Jazz-Alben «Kind of Blue», «The Blues and the Abstract Truth» und «Porgy & Bess» gemeinsam? Die gespielten Titel: Interpret:in: Titel (Album / Label) Paul Chambers: Dear Ann (Whims of Chambers / Blue Note) Miles Davis: 'Round Midnight ('Round Midnight / Columbia) Miles Davis + 19: The Duke (Miles Ahead / CBS Paul Chambers: Yesterdays (Bass on Top / Blue Note) Miles Davis: So What (Kind of Blue / CBS) John Coltrane: Mr. P.C. (Giant Steps / Atlantic) Paul Chambers: Melody (1st Bassman / Suite Beat)

This episode is titled for a recording found through jazztodon.com . Oliver Nelson (of Blues and the Abstract Truth fame), recorded Skull Session in 1975. It's quite a departure from his other recordings, and is his take on the fusion sound that was popular in that era. Same can be said for the Preminger track if you are familiar with his work. The podcast ends on a more familiar note for ITG listeners with Mobley, Morgan and Shank. Creed Taylor was an inspiration to generations of music lovers. He was behind some of the greatest records ever made. He passed away on August 22 at the age of 93. For forty years, Creed Taylor was one of a small handful of jazz record producers and label managers who shaped and defined the sound of jazz recording. Through his work with the Bethlehem, ABC, Impulse!, Verve, and CTI labels, he produced classic albums for countless artists. He introduced us to "The Girl From Ipanema," "Mister Magic" and showed us "The Blues and the Abstract Truth." He produced both hits and critically acclaimed albums, and his sound defined an era. He made the history (for us to study), set the bar (for us to dance on), and paved the road (that many are still on). Needless to say, it was an honor to talk to him! We met at his apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan in the summer of 2015 and talked about some of his most memorable experiences. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

My guest today is Leftover Salmon bassist, Greg Garrison. He was also a founding member of Punch Brothers, and has played alongside some of the best musicians in the bluegrass, jazz, and Americana worlds. His performance credits include: Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Chris Thile, Bryan Sutton, Jerry Douglas, and Sam Bush. I first met Greg as a student at CU Denver back in 2012. I was in my junior year as a jazz piano major, and Greg was filling in for a teacher who was out on sabbatical. He taught my jazz ensemble course and was such a great fit that he ended up staying on at CU Denver. He still teaches there today. This episode is part 2/2 of our celebration of Leftover Salmon's new album, "Brand New Good Old Days" (May 7). Last week I chatted with founding member, Drew Emmitt. Greg was not just a band member on this record, but also the producer. In our conversation, we chat in depth about the making and production of this project. He also offers some insight on balancing teaching with performing, splitting up with the Punch Brothers, and what he learned about his instrument from playing with Lyle Lovett. To wrap up, Greg talks about current projects he's working on, including a newly released collaboration with Grant Gordy, Alez Hargreaves, and Joe K. Walsh entitled, "Bluegrass and the Abstract Truth." Alibi Ale Works is on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in the town of Incline Village. You can almost walk from the lodge at Diamond Peak in your snowboard boots down to the brewery. And then Mt. Rose is right up the road a few minutes, and you should definitely hit both if you're in the area. Alibi is known for their sour beers, but they have great dark and pale ales, and they're really creative with saisons too. Matt Garcia is the head brewer there, and Kevin Drake is the owner. They both had a lot to teach me about brewing and the fermentation process, and how they exploit different combinations of tame and wild yeasts for the kinds of beers that don't compare to anything else out there. In this interview we tried the Reverb Red Ale, the Alibi Kölsch, the Farmhouse Fresca (a wild fermented, dry-hopped saison), the Abstract Truth dark saison, the Alibi IPA, and the Strawberry Crescendo sour ale. All super refreshing and drinkable, and some of the best examples of their respective styles. Thanks to Matt and Kevin for hanging out with me and pouring drinks, and thanks to you for listening! The "Ski Town Brews" theme music is from "Camaro," by Oliver Michael. This episode also features "A Scary Ferris Wheel Ride" by Ziv Grinberg, "Hyper-Pegasus" by Clara Kamil, "Black Cat Soiree" by Bob Hart, "Meet and Greet" by Randy Sharp, "Manila Chill" by Kicktracks, and "Let's Go" by Orkas. You can find all these songs and artists on Artlist.io.
Jazz is all about the contrast between the individual and the collective, and few recordings embody that as beautifully as "Stolen Moments," the opening track from Oliver Nelson's 1961 hard-bop record The Blues and the Abstract Truth. On this episode, Kirk dives deep into Nelson's classic tune, starting with his dense horn arrangement, then considering the three improvised horn solos as distinct creations that reflect the at-times wildly different ambitions of each individual player. Also, there's jazz flute.

This wonderful album is a prelude to the more famous "The Blues and The Abstract Truth" by Oliver Nelson. This album recorded 10 months before "The Blues...." is definitive Nelson and very nearly captures the brilliance of the more famous album. "Screamin' The Blues" features six great compositions by Nelson and features the leader on tenor and alto saxophones. Like all Nelson dates, this band assembled only for the record session sounds like a working band. With Nelson is the iconic and adventurous Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet. The powerhouse trumpet of Richard Williams and the elegant piano work of Richard Wyands is on tap.. George Duvivier is on bass and he works hand in glove with "Mr. Snap-Crackle" aka Roy Haynes on drums.. Truly a fine definitive recording by one of the great Jazz Masters: Oliver Edward Nelson.
This episode features trumpeter Nicholas Payton, jazz sextet One for All, and saxophonist Oliver Nelson's album The Blues and the Abstract Truth.
Dossier ON1961… “The Blues And The Abstract Truth”, l'album culte d'Oliver Nelson.Hébergé par Ausha.
I discuss the first Abstract Truth, truth itself. Next up, reality.
For forty years, Creed Taylor was one of a small handful of jazz record producers and label managers who shaped and defined the sound of jazz recording. Through his work with the Bethlehem, ABC, Impulse!, Verve, and CTI labels, he produced classic albums for countless artists. He introduced us to “The Girl From Ipanema”, “Mister Magic” and showed us “The Blues and the Abstract Truth”. He produced both hits and critically acclaimed albums, and his sound defined an era. He made the history (for us to study), set the bar (for us to dance on), and paved the road (that many are still on). Needless to say, I was very excited to talk to him! We met at his apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan and talked about some of his most memorable experiences. One idea that emerged from our conversation is that you can’t always tell who a person is from the music they make, and people are not always who we imagine them to be.
Hartry Field (NYU) gives a talk at the MCMP Colloquium (20 May, 2015) titled "Indicative Conditionals, Restricted Quantification, Naïve Truth". Abstract: Truth is "naive" if for eternal sentences S, the attribution of truth to S is equivalent to S. Kripke’s theory of truth (the Kleene based version) shows how to get naive truth for very simple languages. After some motivation, I will sketch how to extend a broadly Kripkean approach to a language with a variably strict conditional operator, of the kind that Stalnaker and others have used to represent ordinary indicative conditionals of English. Also, to show how to combine this with a different conditional operator to handle restricted quantification. Previous attempts at logics for restricted quantification compatible with naive truth have mostly led to very impoverished logics. The only exception is a 2014 paper by me, but it was based on an ad hoc and unmotivated construction. This talk shows how to get a good logic for naive truth and restricted quantification in a much better-motivated way.

"Screamin' The Blues" is really a classic album that doesn't enjoy the same fame as Mr. Nelson's "The Blues And The Abstract Truth". It was recorded by similiar personnel but for a smaller label (Prestige/New Jazz) and about 8 months before the "Abstract Truth" date. Make no mistake the level of music is just as high as it the creativity. The people involved on this session are Richard "Notes" Williams on powerhouse trumpet and the wonderful Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and bass clarinet.Mr. Nelson plays both alto and tenor saxophones. Pianist Richard Wyands is tasteful and swinging, the great George Duvivier is on bass and Mr."Snap Crackle" aka Roy Haynes is on drums. Well thought out and organized as most Nelson recordings are...this sounds like a working band and it's close because everyone's head is in the same place. It's a great listen!

Oliver Nelson wrote and directed the iconic album Blues and The Abstract Truth - a defining 1960s jazz record. In this programme Guy Barker joins Alyn Shipton to explore the wealth of material that Nelson created as both arranger and saxophonist in a prolific career cut short by chronic overwork.
Back with another ALL VINYL set is Bob Sfero's classic soul/RnB/hip hop selections to take us IN TO the new year.
