Send us a textEarlier this week, The Mountain-Ear Podcast brought you the first of two interviews with founding members of The Yonder Mountain String Band, the first being with guitarist Adam Aijala. Now, here's the second one, with banjo player Dave Johnston!Yonder Mountain String Band has built a legacy over the last 26 years, and it all started completely spontaneously. The band has primarily focused on bluegrass stylings over their career, but none of the founding members started by playing bluegrass. Dave Johnston didn't pick his instrument of choice until college when a friend brought his father's banjo to the University of Illinois. Eventually, Johnston played in his first ensemble, Giblet Gravy, and when he and others split from that group, those members formed The Bluegrassholes. At one point, Johnston invited Jeff Austin to sing and play with The Bluegrassholes. Austin revealed he didn't play an instrument but did have a mandolin. In response, Johnston encouraged Austin to “play anything, just play fast and loud” at the performance. After the Bluegrassholes dissolved, Johnston moved to Boulder and Austin moved to Nederland. The two played in other Colorado projects, including Johnston's project Fireweed with Patrick Latella. However, one night in 1998, something magic happened.Read the Music of the Mountains article for Yonder Mountain String Band and both parts of this week's podcast segment to learn more about how the band started with founding members Johnston, Austin, Aijala, and bassist Ben Kaufmann, and how their history has grown with four other people joining the lineup over the last 26 years! Rebinging Star Trek DS9: The Adversary Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 26 of Deep Space Nine: The Adversary. We've arrived at another season finale - somehow we made it through season 3! In this episode we spend a lot of time on the Defiant (which James appreciates) chasing after a villain who could be anybody (which Kim appreciates). It's The Thing meets X-Files! We also have guest star Lawrence Pressman returning in a different role and a bunch of crew members we've somehow never seen before (hello Jeff Austin as Bolian). The Adversary Even though we should all be expecting Founders to show up everywhere, we are still somehow surprised when they do. The good news in this episode is Sisko is finally promoted to captain. The bad news is a lot of NPCs are going down as another Founder sneaks his way into the story and causes havoc. Poor Odo...this is not his finest or happiest moment and we end this episode (and season) with some real drama. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Ep. 2 will be out soon! In the meantime, as a follow up to Ep. 1, Emily sits down with her fellow Vets for Peace/About Face Vets after their direct action at the Trump rally in Tulsa on June 20th to reflect on what service now means to them during the current (and hopefully-finally-jfc-it-better-be victorious) iteration of the long fight for racial justice. Included in this conversation are Stephen Funk, Ollie, Emily Yates, Krystal Twobulls, and Jade Daniels. Episode title is in reference to an apropos JJ Cale song that would have been cool to include except copyright, with special nods to the late great Jeff Austin, who did a smoking cover of it. At this years Kendal Calling music festival, as i was walking back to the car on my last day. I took a look around me, walked though stranded tents , blow up air beds, more rubbish and plastic than you can ever imagine and i said to myself " Do we really deserve to have such a beautiful planet" we are animals !! No actually we are not animals, animals would never treat this planet like we do....... I watch grown adults throw empty cans, plastic pint glasses , food cartons , randomly on the floor just because they couldn't be bothered to walk 4 steps to the bin. I watched men and women piss against trees, tents , fences, not caring about anyone else ... IS THIS THE WORLD I WANT TO LIVE IN, BRING MY CHILDREN UP IN? On this episode my friend Jeff Austin comes in to talk about how he is trying to do his own little bit to save our planet. We were very proud to be given the opportunity to interview Bill Nershi of String Cheese Incident, so even though Rob Turner was on assignment in New England, Seth Weiner was able to soldier on and do what is probably his best to-date solo interview (although we are all confused as to what "taking the realm" means). Bill and Seth wasted no time in comparing Fox's. They also spoke about how, like Railroad Earth's Tim Carbone, Bill is a Colorado transplant from New Jersey. Bill elaborates on this, the ever-growing "New Grass" (aka "Jam Grass") scene and how he went from being a fan of Del McCoury to becoming one of his peers. Nershi also speaks of how his days as an aspiring visual artist led to him creating the band's now-familiar "Pagan Swirl" artwork. He lets us into his thoughts about writing and performing with his wife Jill, Jim Lauderdale and Benny Burle Galloway and speaks of the importance of having a representative of the "lyric police" in the room. The joys of bringing forth new songs to the SCI repertoire, and dusting off old ones (SCI had just a short time before this interview performed the "40 Miles To Tulsa" chestnut for the first time in 20 or so years, and this performance is included at the end). Bill also throws some loved toward key people behind the scenes in the SCI family who plan and execute their most elaborate incidents, and gets a tad emotional when talking about his friend/neighbor Jeff Austin who had passed away shortly before this interview. Seth also speaks with Justin Levy of Conscious Alliance and they briefly discuss how his CA harnesses the energy and passion of the music world to feed hungry people of the wider world. Levy talks about how he found his way to serving others for a living, and gives examples of ways that Conscious Alliance encourages people to participate. The episode ends first with Turner talking about his experience traveling to Philadelphia for a weekend-long Bachelor's Party in celebration of his long-time friend Jefferson Waful (who is the Director of Video at CID Entertainment) and then with a soundboard recording of the aforementioned String Cheese Incident bustout rendition of "10 Miles To Tulsa." Jeff Austin, Seeking all that’s still unsung
Tides of A Teardrop is Mandolin Orange's latest release, and we only recently had the opportunity to sit down with them. Their last record, 2016's Blindfaller garnered wild acclaim, and I can tell you that Tides of a Teardrop should eclipse that. It's a deeply personal record, written primarily by Andrew Marlin, with some input from Emily Frantz. Together, the duo make absolutely incredible roots music, beyond the bluegrass label they've been tagged with. This interview is an intimate one with Andrew Marlin. A very intimate behind the scenes conversation with Andrew Marlin. His comments regarding Jeff Austin were so poignant and beautiful too. Sex in the Pews’ 69th Episode begins with a discussion of the implications of the number 69, what is the most effective way to think about sex and religion, the effects of self-loathing, how to thwart that kind of “stinking thinking” and the stress which accompanies change. Glenn relates a story about how not proactively coping with a change landed him in the hospital and how the change of the shocking news of the death of Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band has impacted him. Then Glenn relates his and his family’s experience with Jeff and the band as he pays tribute to a brilliant musician and performer. Then the Boys welcome back the great Melissa Anderson. Melissa is the host of the “Matters of the Heart Opinion Poll” on Facebook and Instagram. She was one of the first-ever guests in the Pews last winter on Episode #4 and now returns for #69 which leads into a dialogue about the value of “69” We learn why Melissa thinks 69 is “overrated”, why discussing sexuality openly is out of her comfort zone, why some people cannot communicate sexually (especially men) and the difference between men and women’s sex drives as we get older, plus lots more. It ain’t going to be boring! NSFW or children. Strong Sexual Content, Language, Spirituality, Humor and Condemnation of Religion. The following year, Mark Steiner released a documentary film entitled To Build an Empire, about The Empire Hideous. In 1998, he was hired as a fill-in vocalist for the Misfits when Michale Graves took an indefinite hiatus because he did not want to go on an extensive tour outside the United States. He did vocals at all the group's shows on the Europe and South America tours that summer, but Graves returned to the band later that year after the tour was completed. 2000's After his Misfits experience, Myke Hideous briefly fronted his horror punk side project, Spy Society 99 and The Bronx Casket Co., with whom he recorded the albums “The Bronx Casket Company” (1999) and “Sweet Home Transylvania” (2002, credited as “Spy”). In 2009, Myke announced he would be working on his final album and also began collaborating on the documentary “Living the American Nightmare: The Story of a Rockstar”. This record included the cover song “Moving in Stereo” by The Cars as a free download on his website to commemorate the death of his long-time friend Peter Steele (lead vocalist of Type O Negative), as it was one of Steele's favorite songs. Within the next year, Myke also released his Spy Society 99 material for the first time on CD, “Die Punk, Die”, a 12 track album featuring nine songs only previously available on cassette and three new tracks and an album of remixes, “Remixes Through Time”.
