In this month's solo episode of the Distillery Nation Podcast, I'm taking you behind the scenes of my journey creating our flagship tasting room in North Bend. I start with the practical foundation—my 16-page feasibility document that helped determine if this venture could actually succeed. I share how I worked with the economic development department to find the perfect property and leveraged ARC GIS data to understand consumer patterns in the area. You'll hear about the seven essential books that guided my tasting room development and my experiences with bar design—comparing Krowne and Glastender for UI mockups before ultimately partnering with a local restaurant supplier. This episode is packed with real-world advice, including how I found incredible deals on commercial equipment through Facebook Marketplace, like a nearly-new dishwasher that saved thousands. I also discuss the critical concept of "useful absurdity"—creating standout features that drive your marketing message tenfold, similar to a Texas bookstore that transformed an old fireplace into a photo-worthy book display that attracts customers daily.

In 2008  Jessica Munnell approached Tom Merkle about working together to create a wine that featured his grapes. A partnership was formed that became Wautoma Wines – made of the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Wautoma Springs. Eight years later Rachel Mercer joined the duo and the three set their sights on increasing production and opening a Tasting Room. In December 2019, Wautoma Springs Tasting Room in Prosser, WA, opened. A small tasting space that showcases tapas, tinned seafood, local produce and Wautoma Springs wines. The epitome of a boutique winery, producing extremely small-lot, hand-crafted wines from people who know the business inside and out. Though different parts of the wine world (geographically) present their own headwinds, many of the difficulties in the wine trade are universal.  And sometimes the solution is at hand, but just not realized or acted upon. Moahe Weizman saw the issue, brainstormed a solution and has now launched his idea. And it is working. Welcome to Wine Talks with Paul K. In today's episode, I dive into the innovative world of collaborative wine selling with Moshe Weizman from Whining. Imagine transforming the way we buy wine—shifting from solo purchases to a community-driven experience. Moshe's platform connects wine buyers, turning individual bottle desires into shared case purchases, maximizing value for both consumers and wineries. While challenges like fulfillment in the U.S. remain, the potential to revolutionize the winery club model and bring people together over a bottle—or a few—is undeniable. Stay curious, and let's raise a glass to new wine experiences!   Moshe Weizman, much like his biblical counterpart, ventures into a land of untapped promise—digital wine commerce. In an episode that teases apart the layers of collaborative selling, listeners will uncover how Moshe has reimagined the wine-buying experience with a blend of tradition and modern technology. Picture this: instead of standing alone amidst a sea of virtual bottles, you find yourself part of a connected network of fellow enthusiasts, each sharing in the discovery and delight of a wine that tickles your curiosity. Paul Kalemkiarian uncorks this conversation, highlighting how the digital shift in wine sales is not merely about technology, but about crafting a new kind of storytelling through wine. Here, Moshe explains how his platform, ‘Whining,' redefines e-commerce by integrating social elements to enhance personal buying experiences—a solution that addresses the waning wine club memberships and reaches out to more elusive Gen Z consumers. From insights on different global markets to anecdotes about Israel's rapid digital adoption, you'll hear firsthand how Moshe navigates the complex web of international regulations, all while fostering a sense of community and shared passion for wine. This episode promises to color in the digital landscapes where wine becomes more than a transaction—it becomes a shared journey, linking the desires of sellers and buyers in unexpected, rewarding ways. Grab your favorite vintage and tune in to discover how ‘Whining' could well be the future of wine commerce.

He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy West. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area's producer's grew, soon Adam's interview's covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. Fast forward to today, the spirit and enthusiasm cultivated with the award winning show, is reborn as The Pour with Adam Montiel, this time independently, and unfettered by corporate authority leaving it even more free to share the journey of making wine more approachable and fun for everyone.  Here, We Taste It. Shara Pathak never planned on owning a brewery, but her “soft heart” led her down this unexpected path. “I owned a building and had a tenant in there that was a microbrewery (Castle Church) and supported them through the infancy of their brand, which was approximately three years,” Pathak said. “In December of 2019, [the brewery's owners] decided that they were going to shelve it. So at that time, I actually was going to put the lock on the door and I was going to give it to a business broker and I the employees reached out to me and it was two weeks before Christmas.” Pathak agreed to let the employees keep the brewery going so they could at least sell off the remaining inventory and collect a paycheck through the holidays. She eventually decided to keep the brewery running. Originally, she was planning to rename it The City Beautiful Brewing, but eventually landed on the name Brewlando. “One of the reasons that I helped that brewery as much as I did was because I really felt like they had exceptional quality beer. You could just taste the difference,“ Pathak said. ”So I just felt like it would be a matter of time, if I helped them along and push them across that eventually they'd be able to forge ahead.” Part of the reason for that, according to Pathak, was because the previous owners had sunk a lot of money into high-end brewing equipment. Despite this, she did not believe she would maintain ownership of the brewery in the long term. “We were going to find another owner-operator and I was going to find another tenant. And in that search, we were introduced to a big conglomerate brand that actually originated from Trinidad, which is where I was born," Pathak said. She ultimately decided that was not the right move; however, the CEO of that company decided to join her team and help her helm Brewlando. “So [James Webb] came on board and built out a great team," Pathak said. Within a year, Webb had made connections with the head of ICON Park and got to talking about opening a new concept at the attraction. “It used to be a hookah bar and so we went in and we completely rented the entire space and decided that we were going to come out with a different concept,” Pathak said. “We thought, why not open a winery and a tasting room?” The Winery & Tasting Room by Brewlando was the first major expansion for the business, but not the last. Shortly after that opened, Pathak learned that Sanford Brewing Company was closing. She thought this could be an opportunity for a quick flip of the property. “Two days later, I got a call and they said, ‘Well, actually, it's not just the building, it's the building's equipment, it's the whole business,‘” Pathak said. She asked Webb to look into it further and see if this was an opportunity for expansion. “James calls me back an hour and a half later and he says, ‘I think that there is good potential in doing this,‘" she said. Her team is now in the process of reopening the two Sanford Brewing locations under the Brewlando name. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, Pathak talks more about the future of Brewlando and what she hopes to accomplish with her expanding business. Learn more about your ad choices. “Those wonderful smells”: A Bay Area coffee history crash course

Before the 1960s, coffee was a faceless commodity: hot brown beanwater with caffeine. Alfred Peet began a revolution in America's coffee culture when he opened his first shop in Berkeley in 1966. Peet changed the way coffee was imported, the way it was roasted, the way it was sold, and even the way it was savored. He also trained multiple generations of people who would go on to be leaders in the coffee industry, including the founders of Starbucks. Today's episode explores the long history of coffee in the Bay Area. In addition to covering Peet's widespread influence, we discuss how beatniks got buzzed in the Italian cafes of North Beach; the somewhat murky origins of Irish coffee and the latte; the birth of 3rd wave, cupping, cowboys, and much more. [00:00:11] Welcome to marketing tip Monday with SIP Certified. We know customers are looking for wines labeled as sustainable. While our longer form episodes help you learn about the latest science and research for the wine industry. These twice monthly micro podcasts will help you share your dedication to sustainable wine growing. [00:00:29] So you can show your customers that you share their values. [00:00:33] The summer months, bring more staff and guests into tasting rooms across the country. Invite your whole team to join in your brand sustainability efforts. When you practice these five sustainable tasting room habits. Tip one is to conserve. Simple actions like completely shutting off water faucets after use and notifying management of leaks help conserve this limited resource. Turning lights and appliances off when not in use reduces electricity. Consumption. [00:01:02] Although the commercial end use energy sector uses the smallest amount of energy of the four sectors, which include transportation, industrial, residential, and commercial. The majority of the energy used comes from fossil fuels, small efforts in the workplace, reduce reliance on non-renewable energy. Tip two is to recycle responsibly. [00:01:24] We know the importance of recycling, but when heading to the bin with recyclables in hand, it's easy to forget the nuances. Some items can be recycled together, like cardboard paper and some plastics and metal. Glass is, usually recycled separately. And sometimes that's separated by color. It may be tempting to line up a recycle bin with a plastic bag. But it can actually be detrimental to your good efforts. [00:01:48] Plastic bags can clog recycling machinery. Contaminate other recyclable materials and potentially lead to recyclable material ending up at the landfill. Instead, keep those items loose or use a paper or reusable bag to line the can. Your wine bottle corks can also be recycled and turned into many useful items. [00:02:08] Start a collection container and send it off to be repurposed. [00:02:12] Re cork has a map of drop off locations that makes it easy to find a cork recycling partner near you. Consider teaming up with neighboring tasting rooms to send your corks together. Tip three is to reduce and reuse. Upgrade to glass and metal dishes in the break room to cut down. On single use plastics, Sanitize and reuse water bottles for serving water. Sustainable Winegrowing with Vineyard Team
234: Sustainable Tasting Room Tips | Marketing Tip Monday

Sustainable Winegrowing with Vineyard Team

Your tasting room may be the most customer-facing facet of your wine business. This makes it the perfect setting to display your dedication to sustainability. Welcome to Marketing Tip Monday with SIP Certified. We know customers are looking for wines labeled as sustainable. While our longer-form episodes help you learn about the latest science and research for the wine industry, these twice-monthly micro podcasts will help you share your dedication to sustainable winegrowing so you can show your customers that you share their values. On a recent Vineyard Team staff trip to Oso Libre, we immediately noticed how they showcased their passion for sustainability through out the property. By providing visual cues at your tasting room, you can let your guests know that the wine they sip is more than delicious – it's environmentally and socially responsible. This Marketing Tip will inspire you to share your commitment in fun, decorative ways. I highly recommend going to the show notes and clicking on “Sustainable Tasting Room Tips” to see pictures of all the great signage we found at Oso Libre. Sign Sustainably Oso Libre highlights their sustainable certification right from the front gate with a custom sign. Their passion is seeded throughout every area of the property. From sustainable signs posted on the fence line to informational pieces at the tasting room bar, every wall has a message that connects guests with what sustainability means to Oso Libre. Consider where your guests meander to at your property and how you can place signage to tell them more about your brand. At Oso Libre, curious tasters are enticed by a plaque as they walk along the vineyard rows to the tasting room front door. This sign defines the seven values of sustainability; Social Responsibility, Water Management, Safe Pest Management, Energy Efficiency, Habitat, Business, and Always Evolving. By creating a piece of in-depth material, you welcome your customers to dig a little deeper and learn exactly how your brand embodies sustainability. Philanthropy is very important to Oso Libre's owners Chris and Linda. A sign in the shade by the outdoor seating shares information about their Por Vida Foundation. Proceeds from various winery activities like events and bottle sales are donated to cancer research, veterans' services, animal services, and family support programs. Consider how you give back to your community and tell your customers about it. They will love learning how you take care of our most valuable resource - our people. Tell Your Sustainable Story We are here to help you tell your customers how your brand protects natural and human resources with the Sustainable Story program. This simple yet powerful free tool helps you tell your own personal sustainable message. And it just got better with a new online course.  Go to the show notes, click the link titled Tell Your Sustainable Story to sign up, and start writing yours today!       Until next time, this is Sustainable Winegrowing with the Vineyard Team. Nikki & Brie are back at the speakeasy, and they have a lot to celebrate in today's episode. They make a monumental announcement that's a HUGE payoff for all of their hard work, so they're officially kicking off the Cowgirl Era, and they're ready to Pop That Bottle. Brie's also celebrating 10 years of marriage with Bryan and contemplates going big for a gift or doing something more personal. They're also loved going on the NCAA Final Four ride with Caitlin Carter and they're impressed with what she's done, what's ahead of her, setting a new standard for women in sports, and how her impact can continue to grow at the next level. Nikki & Brie also spent a wild weekend in Phoenix partying at Wild Horse Pass at Gila River Casino in Chandler, AZ, seeing E-40 and Ice Cube perform, but Nikki & Brie might not be able to hang like they used to. Maybe it's Mercury Retrograde? The Garcia Twins also talk about the need for routine and recognizing what really makes them happy, a callback to the episode with Jason Tartick, and using that information to be comfortable saying “no,” and prioritizing their joy. Nikki & Brie are also about to embark on another new adventure that could put them to the test, they signed up to coach Buddy and Matteo's T-Ball team. and Buddy has already made it known that he's not happy about it at all. Brie is focused on being a great motivator for the team and Nikki's focused on looking like a coach and choosing the right outfits that let everyone on the team know that she's an authority figure. The biggest struggle so far has been choosing a team name. There's also a big debate on participation awards, medals, and trophies, but Nikki & Brie have their sights set on first place. Brie closes the episode out with her pick for Inspiration & Affirmation that brings her back to nature and enjoying your own definition of “life” more.
