Send us a textMusic has been an important part of Laurie Dameron's life since childhood. Her mom started teaching her how to sing as a toddler, even teaching her and her sister three-part harmonies to sing on car trips. She started piano lessons around the age of four, but as a child, she didn't like being told what to do. Her mother encouraged her to try various endeavors, including ballet, tap dancing, acting, and swimming. However, none of them truly stuck with her. When Dameron was around seven years old, her mother started taking guitar lessons. As a form of rebellion, Dameron would sneak into her mother's room and teach herself how to play the guitar. From there, she completely fell in love with performing. She played her first gig at a brewery in Pearl Street Mall with two friends from junior high and high school, brothers Dave and Drew Emmitt, with the latter later becoming one of the “Big Three” members of Leftover Salmon.Dameron went to college at Adams State University in Alamosa, and for her last two years there, she ran the open mic at the school. She posted flyers, ran marketing, and made sure to advertise the event during her time as a DJ for the local radio station KASF-FM.During her time at Adams State, she toured with ASC Big Band Jazz Ensemble. As part of that group, she performed twice in the Greeley Jazz Festival, where her playing impressed virtuoso jazz guitar player Johnny Smith. She briefly received free guitar lessons from Smith at his music store in Colorado Springs, but ultimately moved to Summit County in 1983.To learn more about Laurie Dameron's life and career (as well as her connection to the host of this podcast), then be sure to tune in to this episode of Music of the Mountains!Call it A Day: https://youtu.be/KQRdFLbDy1M Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear Podcast, featuring the news and culture from peak to peak!If you want to be featured in the podcast, contact the host at media@themountainear.com!SUBSCRIBE ONLINE and use the coupon code PODCAST for A 10% DISCOUNT for ALL NEW SUBSCRIBERS! He started playing football as a junior at Smoky Hill High School. He made varsity as a senior. Chase Vaughn turned some heads in that short time and received three small offers at Division II and NAIA schools. He accepted one for Adams State and was there for 2 years until CSU-Pueblo started a football program. He took a leap of faith and transferred. Good move. In his first game, Chase had 4 ½ sacks and when he graduated, he held the Thunderwolves' sack record. NFL scouts were checking him out, but his name wasn't called on draft day, nor did any teams call afterwards to invite him as a free agent. At that point, the grind began between different leagues including the Arena League and the CFL. After a few years of being cut and racking up the balance on a credit card with tryout fees and plane tickets, Chase was noticed by a Broncos scout and signed a contract with Denver. He suffered an injury his first season and when John Fox was fired, he figured he was done. But Gary Kubiak's group kept him around for another season and he took the opportunity to slow down and appreciate how far he'd come. After football, Chase became a firefighter for the Aurora Fire Department and provides an insightful analogy between playing football and fighting fires. While he used to thrive on adrenaline running down the field on special teams, he now thrives on running into burning structures and being there for people on their worst days.

Twas a backyard brawl on Thursday night. I took in some high school wrestling as I watched Mounds View High School dispatch with Irondale … which are the two high schools in my school district. One is known as the sports school, the other is the band and robotics school. The sports school won 60-6. By the way, former Gopher Marty Morgan's youngest son is a 215-pounder for Mounds View and he's freaking HUGE. He's headed to South Dakota State. I was spotted in the crowd by one Mounds View parent. Was great to just watch some pretty good high school wrestling without actually working. There's some great HS wrestling kicking off today at the Walsh Ironman. Check my socials @jasonmbryant for some knowledge bombs. It's Short Time Shots, a look at the day's college wrestling scores and more, I'm your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. On to the scores on the college scene from Thursday. Speaking of scoreboards, did you know you can find all the D1 dual meet scores and links to their results at collegewrestlingscoreboard.com AND I've added another redirect to help you follow all the tournaments from every division at collegewrestlingtournaments.com. Only D1 dual of the night, Michigan State improved to 4-0 after a 25-9 win over Buffalo ON THE STAGE up in New York. Buffalo did one of those theatre-style duals for the third year in a row. If you look at the dual, this one was probably closer than the score indicates as Michigan State picked up three victories that were two points or less. Still been a rough start for Buffalo this year. In Division II, Augustana (S.D.) knocked off 13th-ranked Northern State 21-13 out in the middle of South Dakota. The Vikings were ranked 18th in the most recent NWCA rankings, which is a tournament points ranking rather than a dual ranking. Augie's top-ranked Jaxson Rohman earned a major at 125 pounds, while top-ranked Wyatt Turnquist won 7-2 at 149 pounds for Northern State. Out west, San Francisco State shutout Simpson (Calif.) 41-0. In D3, second-ranked Wartburg rolled past the only non-Iowa team in the American Rivers Conference, which used to be the Iowa Conference. The Knights had five falls, the fastest coming at 197 pounds by top-ranked Mo Endene, the returning D3 champion at the weight in the 54-0 win. Third-ranked UW-Eau Claire rallied from down 14-3 after five weights and reeled off five straight W's to oust rival UW-Whitewater 25-14. Whitewater did pick up the dual's most notable win as ninth-ranked Dominick Mallinder bounced top-ranked Tyler Fleetwood 7-1 at 133 pounds. 20th-ranked Millikin topped Aurora 23-17. Bonus points were the difference for the Big Blue as three of the wins were bonus victories including falls by Coby Haney at 133 and Nathan Callaway at 157. Also in the CCIW, Elmhurst edged Concordia Wisconsin 24-23. Roanoke beat Shenandoah 43-4 out in my home state of Virginia. Three bonus victories were the difference for Loras as they topped Cornell College 21-19 in a matchup of Iowa schools. In the NAIA, Montana State-Northern rallied to beat Dickinson State 32-16, while No. 11 Providence (Mont.) beat Eastern Oregon 28-15. Top-ranked Hunter Sparks of Eastern Oregon got a fall in that one at 125 pounds. The Evergreen State College earned its first win, topping Grays Harbor College 50-3. Evergreen's mascot? The GEODUCKS. What is a Geoduck? Well, it's the largest burrowing clam in the world, native to the coastal waters of the Pacific. Makes sense, Evergreen is in Washington. Grays Harbor is too, just a mile or two from the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. Some of you will get the reference. On the women's side, fourth ranked Colorado Mesa torched Texas Woman's University 44-5, and Adams State 45-4. UW-Stevens Point topped Wartburg 30-13 in the first home dual in school history for the new women's program at Wartburg. Minot State was a winner over Dakota Wesleyan 27-16. Evergreen's women also picked up a W, beating Grays Harbor 34-8. Shout outs to our latest Mat Talk patrons, Warrior Coach and KBnoswag. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. The D3 Cross Country season is heating up. The big meets are approaching and the performances are taking it up a notch. For Week 5, we're bring back the Pocket Aces award and recognizing someone who faired well against strong competition. The Pocket Aces award goes to Morgan Uhlhorn + Grace Richardson from NYU. This duo finished third and fourth at the Paul Short Brown Race which helped NYU take the team win. Last year, we saw a resurgence from the NYU squad and Grace Richardson was a big part of that. They finished 26th in the nation and showed flashes of their potential. Vivian Kane made the outdoor track national meet and now add in a strong first-year in Morgan Uhlhorn, the Violets are looking like a contender. We took the liberty to combine all D3 teams from Paul Short. they finished just six points behind SUNY Geneseo. With Morgan and Grace leading the way, they deserving of the Pocket Aces award. Unfortunately, we weren't able to Interview them but want to recognize them anyway. Max and North Central traveled down to Louisville to take on strong D1 and D2 competition. Max finished sixth in a race that featured Adams State, Grand Valley State and Purdue. Svienty led NCC to a fifth place team finish as well. Looking at where Max finished, he would have been the number one runner for Grand Valley and Purdue plus the number two for Adams State. When speaking to Max, he likes to go into these races with a mindset that division doesn't matter. He's ready to take on any competition and show D3 runners can be just as good. We spoke with Max during track about getting NCC back on track. Though it's early in the season, the team feels confident with how the season has gone so far. They're feeling ready to take on these big meets and get NCC back to the podium. How to Support D3 Glory Days: D3 Glory Days Venmo. We launched a Patreon! This week I had the pleasure to speak with Pablo Vigil. We talk about his humble beginnings in the Mora Valley of North New Mexico and how running helped propel him to greater things. He went to school at Adams State in southern Colorado, which has a long history of New Mexican runners, which we touch on. He also talked about learning from the great Coach, Dr. Joe Vigil. Pablo talks about this time and what it meant to learn from Coach Vigil. He goes on to talk about his journey into marathon training and how he got involved with Frank Shorter's training group in Boulder. It's a fascinating story that he says changed his life. Pablo also talks about getting into mountain running and touches on how different it was then to now. At the time, it was a great way for him to extend his running career. We also talk about his journey into teaching and education. It was a fun conversation that I hope you enjoy and get something from. Pablo is passionate about running and really wants people to find what inspires them. This heat has been rough. There's not much you can do, other than try and run early or late. Listen to your bodies and slow down in the heat. Stay hydrated, stay cool, and keep running, New Mexico. Photo Credit: Alexis Berg

By Jesse SpectorContinuing the project that I referenced in yesterday's Pavilion, I was looking to see who coached Centre College from 1938-41, and thus had young assistant DeWitt Weaver on staff. Instead, I found Centre president Dr. Milton Moreland's carrot cake recipe. This project also took me last night to 1959 in South Dakota, and another Sports Illustrated piece, this one by Roy Terrell, “Normalcy In A Small World.” Fellow fans of the Sickos Committee, which of course you are……will enjoy diving into this.To the millions of football fans who focus their attention each Saturday afternoon on Syracuse and Southern Cal, on Northwestern and Texas and LSU, small-college football is a world apart. Yet there are far more small colleges in the U.S. than big colleges and hundreds of them play football every weekend in the fall. Some play very good football indeed. In this number there are big, wealthy schools, which are smalltime only in an intercollegiate athletic sense: Cal Poly, with its enrollment of 5,000; Mississippi Southern, with 3,825; and dozens of schools, such as East Texas State and Mankato Teachers of Minnesota and Hofstra on Long Island, all around 3,000. Then there are the medium-size small colleges, schools with 800 or 1,000 or 1,200 students, like Lenoir Rhyne in North Carolina, Juniata and Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania, Hope and Hillsdale in Michigan, Adams State in Colorado, Whittier in California, Willamette in Oregon. They play good football, too.And finally there are the small small colleges: Emporia of Kansas, Presbyterian of South Carolina, Sewanee of Tennessee—and Huron. Governed in most cases by the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) rather than by the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), even their rules are different. They still have unlimited substitution, for example, to which the big schools are slowly returning. Freshmen are eligible for varsity competition. They have never adopted the two-point conversion nor have they widened their goal posts, partly because many of them can't afford to pull down and put up new goal posts every few years. But the game is the game; that isn't hopscotch Huron has been playing out there. One thing, though: it's definitely a piece that is of 1959. Huron College, which was a college before South Dakota was a state, called its teams the Scalpers. They later became the Si Tanka University Screaming Eagles before the school shut down in 2005. In 1959… …like I said, the SI piece was of 1959. But that also means that the ending comes across in a sweet and charming way that it probably wouldn't if it were written today, even if the feelings of joy that we get from sports at this level are so similar.I think that's something people look for a lot, and try to recapture, the sweetness of their youth, or the charm of the times before they were born, that they heard about from parents and grandparents. Nostalgia can be wielded in dangerous ways, as the very phrase that came to define a neofascist movement should make clear. It's also worth remembering the positive appeal, that even in things we've come to be cynical about, there's something good, and reasons that we fell in love, and often that generations before us did, too.The nickname, the mascot cartoon, the “pretty coeds” caption… all stuff that wouldn't make most readers have a second thought in that era. Three years later, Terrell was still at SI, and had a piece in the college football issue, which…This is also of the time, right? But waving the Confederate flag is so much louder, something that never was about honoring heritage and tradition unless you're talking about a heritage and tradition of racism — it's a good thing that it's become more common knowledge that Dixie fetishization and its incorporation into “traditions” was directly connected to Jim Crow and responding to the civil rights movement. Just because Huron College was a tiny school, without any of the clout of Ole Miss or the SEC, we can't just give it a pass. There are different levels of contempt available to us, and that's important when we try to contextualize things. The Huron coed and the Ole Miss cheerleaders both have some old-timey racism going on, but there should be a discernible difference between a school drum and the flag of violent racist traitors.Speaking of violent racists, that Roy Terrell story on Woody Hayes included a gem of an anecdote:Two years ago, as a spectator at a game in Cleveland between the Indians and Yankees, Hayes suffered through the one-handed artistry of Vic Power at first base until he could stand it no more. "You're showing off," Hayes yelled from his box near the Indian dugout. "Why don't you use both hands and help your team win?" Power, whose ears are as good as his hands, dropped over and invited Mr. Hayes to discuss the matter further after the game; Hayes, probably figuring that much of the 230 pounds he carries these days is relatively useless in hand-to-hand combat, went home instead. He didn't go back to watch the Indians again until they traded Power to Minnesota. "That guy makes me sick," he says. "What's he got two hands for?"Two paragraphs earlier, Hayes had slugged a reporter, which he denied but an assistant cheekily didn't. But the big toughie suddenly zipped his lip and ran away from Cleveland Stadium until Power — not really a huge dude — wasn't there anymore because he was scared. In case there was any doubt of Hayes being exactly the kind of jackass in 1960 that he'd be for another two decades with unchecked power at Ohio State, that year Power won the third of his then-record seven Gold Gloves. He now trails only George Scott, Don Mattingly, and Keith Hernandez.Hayes, meanwhile, has been surpassed as the Buckeyes' biggest human paraquat of a head coach by Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. Of course, Hayes had to walk so that they could run.The man who can make Woody Hayes sickest of all is the archenemy, Jack Fullen, alumni secretary at Ohio State. Fullen once proposed that the school give up all pretense at amateurism, hire a professional team and control it under a bureau of football.Fullen, who never wanted Hayes at OSU in the first place, did wind up managing to keep the Buckeyes out of the 1962 Rose Bowl... but obviously Hayes stayed right up until 1977, when he punched a cameraman during the Ohio State-Michigan game.Haha, just kidding, Hayes kept his job a whole ‘nother year after that, until he punched Clemson's Charlie Bauman during the Gator Bowl. They should've listened to Jack Fullen. If only he'd had a carrot cake recipe. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe
One of the most stunning developments in D2 cross country history has just unfolded. The Adams State men, after advancing to the NCAA XC Championships for 25-straight years, were unable to qualify for this year's national meet after placing 7th at the South Central Regional XC Championships. Garrett and D2 editor John Cusick jumped on the mics for an emergency podcast to discuss the latest news. NOTE: We have since edited our initial published audio to clarify language that TSR used when discussing the D2 cross country national qualifying system.

At the tender age of 23, Annie Hughes burst onto the Ultrarunning scene like a supernova! She won the brutal and storied Leadville 100 and Moab 240 and was ranked 3rd Ultrarunner of the Year by UltraRunning Magazine. Annie resides in Leadville, CO, and became the race's youngest winner—made sweeter still by running in front of her friends, family, and local community. Annie feels blessed that Hoka took a gamble on her and signed her and it looks like Hoka made a great addition to their pro roster! Annie is a fierce competitor fueled by exploring her limits, trying to find out just how far her feet and mind can take her. She is on a quest. Next up is the Cocodona250 and I'm stoked to follow! We discuss: her start in running, moving to the mountains, running at Adams State, burnout, climbing all 58 of the 14ers, moving to Leadville, finishing school, finding Ultra, the Silver Rush 50 Miler, qualifying for the Leadville 100, her 160M Collegiate Loop FKT, the Leadville 100, recovery, the Moab240, running at night, sleep-running, managing sleep in multi-day races, and her recovery strategy for the Cocodona250 My favorite parts from this conversation were Annie taking us out there on the courses at Leadville and Moab, sharing all the highs and lows of those two epic races! I'm so stoked to continue to follow Annie's exciting Ultra running journey! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. This week I had the pleasure to speak with Isaiah Rodarte. He is a Peñasco High School Graduate and current Adams State University runner. Recently he placed 5th at the DII Cross Country National Championships. We talk about his start in running, choosing Adams State, and much more. We touch on running in high school and the ability for him to compete against everything from A to 5A schools and being uncertain about college running as well as wanting to represent New Mexico. We talk about his recent success and he says that he never expected how well this year turned out until he was in it. He also gives good advice on keeping up with classes while competing and practicing. He even talks a little about running the steeplechase at the Great South West his senior year of high school. It was a fun conversation and I hope you enjoy it and have an opportunity to watch him and other New Mexican athletes during the upcoming indoor track season. With our wonderful indoor facility here in Albuquerque, we get a few weekends to really support the sport in our state. I hope everyone enjoyed a couple of days off to recharge and spend time with family. Hopefully everyone stayed safe and healthy and I am excited for everyone's winter and spring plans coming up. So, be kind, stay warm, cheer each other on, and keep running, New Mexico.

Going Deep To Heal Relational Pain Matthew Leavenworth is a mental health counselor in Billings Montana with Yellowstone Counseling Center. He graduated from Adams State University in 2015 with a master in mental health counseling and is currently pursuing his PhD at Adams State as a counselor educator. He has extensive experience seeing children, adults, couples, and families dealing with a range of disorders, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. He uses rock climbing as an experiential component of therapeutic healing and is an avid rock climber and outdoorsman when he is not home with his beloved wife Kylie and daughter Huxley. The Dock By Matthew Leavenworth I feel the sand under my toes, The sky is blue. The sun is opaque behind thin clouds. A slight breeze blows across the water. The dock is a hundred yards in front of me, A peninsula out into a great expanse of water. I have a towel in my hands. My skin goosepimples and I shiver as the breeze picks up with a chill. I think about turning back. The water is too cold. The wind will chill me to the bone. There are sharks out there. Instead, I throw the towel aside and start forward. My steps are heavy at first, The wet sand swallows my feet, I can still turn back. I don't. I start jogging forward, My quickening steps find the wooden planks, faster and faster. There is no railing; only the sparkling cold and deep that will swallow me. The end of the dock looms, The thought occurs. I can turn back, I can stop unless I take another step. I leap forward. Into the open unknown. The water swallows me. It is all the pain and the triumph and everything I am. I am deep under water. Deeper and deeper, Until I see. Other shapes in the water, like mine, staring back at me, swimming also. Connections Family Counseling Join The Facebook group

Talking Sixes Global Significance Sixes lacrosse has been in lacrosse news a lot this week, with the announcement of World Lacrosse's new discipline on Tuesday, the lacrosse industry was torn on how to react. Those of us with international ties understand how hard other countries are working to grow the game and how beneficial Sixes will be in that growth. As Jason said during our interview, the eyeballs an Olympic broadcast would provide creates a new wave of potential fans, players, and coaches. Building a Sixes Roster Full disclosure, neither of us know exactly what the roster limitations will be but we do understand that the rosters will be capped and much smaller than the world games roster of 23. With that being said, we dove a little deeper into what types of players we see being beneficial: traditional 2 way midfielders, guys who grew up playing more attack but transitioned to d-mid in college (happens a lot), BOX players. One unique situation we cant wait to watch play out is Blaze Riorden. Blaze is a world class field goalie and an exceptional forward in the NLL. This means that if you plan to carry 2 goalies, which you should, Blaze could be taking runs out of the cage adding important depth in this new fast paced style of lacrosse. The main point here is, teams will be made up of generalists, guys that can do a little bit of everything (guys like Jeremy Thompson, Zach Currier, Kyle Harrison). Becoming a Women's Coach With an impressive resume as men's coach (Canisius, Alma, Adams State, IMG, Team Canada) what led Jay to becoming a D1 women's head coach? A chance opportunity while working at the IMG academy led to Jay having an increased role helping the women's teams. Over time he grew a stronger and deeper appreciation for the women's game until a familiar friend and mentor (Randy Mearns) brought the vacancy at St.Bonaventure to his attention. It appears Levesque is all in on the women's game and hopes that others will learn to appreciate the game the same way he did. Jason Levesque is the current D1 Women's Head Coach at St.Bonaventure University. He has had multiple coaching stops in his career, including as an assistant for the Canadian Men's Field team. This week I had the pleasure to talk with former Las Vegas Robertson Cardinal and Adams State Grizzly, Victoria Collins. She has been a qualifier to USATF Nationals and is a former DII cross country, 800, & 1500 national champion. We talk about joining track in middle school, starting cross country, and her early running. She talks about not understanding the tradition of Adams State before starting there and what it meant to add to that tradition. Victoria talks about her post collegiate career and when she knew it was something she could go after. The motivation from her coach, Martin, at Adams State and how she felt she could run through a brick wall for him, speaks volumes about their relationship and her determination. And that determination is a theme that I hope you take away from this. She speaks a lot about being in the right place and an opportunity falling into her lap, but she put herself in a situation to succeed. We end the conversation talking about her new running group for Rio Rancho runners, Rio Rancho Running. Check it out if you live on that side of the river. She is a great motivator and easy to talk to on a nice long run. The weather is warming, the wind is blowing, it is a great time for early morning runs. So stay safe, stay hydrated, know your comfort level, and keep running, New Mexico.
Did you know Adams State University is the most affordable four-year university in Colorado? Did you know there are approximately 2,000 undergraduate students at Adams State? Host Maura Brady McMullen and Admissions Counselor, Diane Arias, discuss the benefits of attending college in the San Luis Valley, in beautiful Alamosa, Colorado. If you're looking for a small college experience that is very student-focused, this Adams State episode deserves a listen.
Good morning lacrosse fans. Thank you for taking time out of your day for the Utah Lax Report. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to shoot me a note: tim@timhaslam.com.Interview w/ Alta Head Coach Moriah GreensteinThis week I spoke with Moriah Greenstein who has been the head coach of the Alta girls team for the past three years. Greenstein hails from Glenmont, New York where she anchored the Bethlehem High School offense and played college lacrosse at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. While at Bates, Greenstein set the school record for assists in a season and career. In this podcast, we talk about all things girls lacrosse. However, you should make a goal to do it soon, it's great food by great people. It has locations in Midvale, Sandy, 9th + 9th and Kimball Junction.Week 7 Coaches PollsNo. 1 Corner Canyon - The Chargers bested No. 4 American Fork on Tuesday, 15-9 (Highlights). The difference in this game was the second quarter when the Chargers scored 6 and allowed 0. The third quarter is the only quarter the Chargers have lost this season when American Fork scored 3 and Corner Canyon just 2. These two will play again on May 7. Corner Canyon followed up the win with a 21-4 victory over Pleasant Grove on Friday. A second matchup against Westlake on Tuesday and the first meeting against Lone Peak on Thursday will take the Chargers into May. Fox13 did a video special about the Chargers. Watch it here. No. 2 Olympus - The Titans continued to win with a 11-1 victory over East on Tuesday and a 15-3 drubbing of rival Skyline on Friday. Olympus plays one game this week when they head to Highland on Wednesday. No. 3 Farmington - The Phoenix beat region foes Woods Cross, 18-0, and Box Elder, 18-4. Three games this week begins on Monday at Bountiful, then home games against Viewmont on Wednesday and Bountiful again on Friday for Senior Night. No. 4 American Fork - After a ‘good loss' to No. 1 Corner Canyon, the Cavemen squeaked out a victory over Lone Peak on Thursday, 11-10, in double overtime. Harry Lisonbee scored the game-winning goal, which was one of 5 total goals on the night for the Senior. The Cavemen will face Pleasant Grove on Tuesday and Skyridge on Thursday. No. 5 Mountain Ridge - What a week for the Sentinels. It all started on Tuesday with an 11-10 overtime win against region rival Timpview (Deseret News recap). I was on the call with Dane Stewart for Game Night Live Rewind and it was a blast. You can watch the game here. Jack Crawford scored the game-winning goal for Mountain Ridge. On Thursday, the Sentinels beat Orem, 14-2, then on Friday, beat Brighton in overtime, 13-12. This time it was Gavin Gann with the game-winner. Winning two games in overtime in one week is quite the heart check for fans. No. 6 Park City - After six straight blowouts, the Miners will be chomping at the bit as it hosts No. 9 Brighton on Tuesday and Wasatch on Friday. No. 7 Green Canyon - The Wolves continue to dominate Cache Valley with wins over Mountain Crest, 19-1, and Ridgeline, 22-6 (Herald Journal recap). Three games this week begins on Monday at Bear River, Wednesday at Logan and home against Sky View on Friday. No. 8 Davis - The Darts edged Northridge on Tuesday, 17-11, and beat Weber, 19-15, on Thursday. This week features games against Clearfield and Roy. Assuming Fremont wins its remaining games, the May 6 showdown should decide Region 1. No. 9 Brighton - After beating Maple Mountain on Monday, 23-3, and Skyline on Wednesday, 18-5, the Bengals fell to Mountain Ridge in overtime, 13-12. Brighton faces Park City on Tuesday and East on Wednesday. No. 10 Fremont - The Silverwolves beat region Syracuse and Roy and will take on Layton and Clearfield this week. Fremont is 10-1 with a lone loss to Davis, 12-8, on March 23.Other articles from this week include a Daily Herald piece on Cedar Valley, a West Jordan Journal article highlighting West Jordan and Copper Hills boys and girls programs, The Herald Journal covering the Sky View v. Mountain Crest game, and a couple photo galleries from the Cache Valley Daily: Green Canyon v. Ridgeline, Logan v. Bear River, Sky View v. Ridgeline, Mountain Crest v. Sky View girls and Bear River v. Sky View. If the season ended today, here's what the playoff brackets would look like:Boys Division ABoys Division BBoys Division CIf we look at the first round matchups from Division A, here's some observations. I'm generally in favor of a RPI (not necessarily this RPI) but I get frustrated looking at some of these games. Corner Canyon v. Lone Peak - these two teams will have played twice already by this point. A third matchup is unnecessary. Farmington v. Skyline - these two teams already played. Farmington won 17-7 in a game that was never close. Mountain Ridge v. Timpview - again, another region game in the first round. Now, I think it would actually be a great game seeing as their other two matchups have been great, but I don't love a region game in the first round. Green Canyon v. Brighton - Green Canyon already won this matchup, 10-8. American Fork v. Park City - AF won this game 14-12. Of the eight games, five have already been played and two would be a third matchup. Not great. What if we seeded these by taking the nine region winners (assuming region standings finish where they are today), using the RPI to seed them, then taking the next best seven teams by RPI. Here's what that would look like: No. 1 Corner Canyon v. No. 16 Weber No. 2 Olympus v. No. 15 SkylineNo. 3 Farmington v. No. 14 WaterfordNo. 4 Davis v. No. 13 TimpviewNo. 5 Mountain Ridge v. No. 12 BrightonNo. 6 Green Canyon v. No. 11 American ForkNo. 7 Park City v. No. 10 FremontNo. 8 Juan Diego v. No. 9 BinghamOnly two duplicate games (Oly/Skyline, Mtn. Ridge/Brighton). I also like the geographic implications more with this method. No. 1 Park City - The Miners played three straight games (Wed/Thur/Fri), winning all three by the combined score of 61-3 including a 15-2 win over No. 8 Alta. The Miners play Wasatch this Friday. No. 2 Skyridge - The Falcons also played three games this week that began with a 16-4 win over Pleasant Grove and a 19-1 win over Westlake. On Friday, the Falcons bested No. 5 Olympus, 12-6, which is a big win for the Skyridge program. The Falcons travel to Lone Peak on Tuesday and host American Fork on Thursday. No. 3 Brighton - The Bengals remained undefeated after wins against Skyline (19-0) and Bingham (27-2). Brighton will travel to East on Wednesday and Lone Peak on Friday. No. 4 Mountain Ridge - The only game this week for the Sentinels was a 25-1 win over Orem. On Tuesday, Mountain Ridge will host Lehi then travel to No. 8 Alta on Thursday. On Friday, they'll head to Timpview. No. 5 Olympus - After beating East on Wednesday, 21-2, the Titans fell to No. 2 Skyridge, 12-6. The Titans will take on Highland on Tuesday for Senior Night. No. 6 Waterford - The Ravens bested Judge, 23-3, on Tuesday and will take on Jordan this Friday. Ravens Senior Jaimeson Meyer sits at second in the state for goals (78), first for assists (27) and first in points (105). No. 7 Davis - A 24-2 win over Northridge and a 17-2 thrashing over Weber highlighted the Darts week. This week, Davis will take on Clearfield and Roy. No. 8 Alta - On Tuesday, Alta beat Mountain View, 22-2, then lost to No. 1 Park City, 15-2. The Hawks will take on Timpview on Tuesday and No. 4 Mountain Ridge on Thursday. No. 9 Herriman - The Mustangs beat West Jordan, 19-5, and Highland, 15-7. Up this week will be Jordan on Tuesday and Copper Hills on Thursday. Herriman is 8-2 with the losses coming to No. 1 Park City and No. 2 Skyridge. No. 10 Corner Canyon - The Chargers had two, one-goal wins this week: American Fork, 15-14, on Tuesday and Pleasant Grove, 16-15, on Thursday. Corner Canyon will travel to Westlake on Tuesday and Lone Peak on Thursday. In the paper this week, The Herald Journal covered the Mountain Crest v. Ridgeline girls game. If the season ended today, here's what the playoff brackets would look like.Girls Division AGirls Division BGirls Division CIn Division A, if the seeds held true, we'd have Park City v. Davis and Olympus v. Skyridge in the semifinals. I feel those would be some excellent games. Should be fun to see this bracket play out. If we seeded the Division A bracket by taking the nine region winners (assuming region standings finish where they are today), using the RPI to seed them, then taking the next best seven teams by RPI. Here's what that would look like: No. 1 Park City v. No. 16 RidgelineNo. 2 Skyridge v. No. 15 West JordanNo. 3 Olympus v. No. 14 Corner CanyonNo. 4 Davis v. No. 13 SyracuseNo. 5 Mountain Ridge v. Anderson is committed to play at Adams State. “Mason is our cool-headed leader on a team of some really even-tempered seniors,” said Green Canyon Head Coach Troy Oldham. “He loves the game of lacrosse and has played it with a passion for most of his life. He's also very elusive, he doesn't move or approach a dodge like he is fast, and then he accelerates and is past you. He's a natural lefty, but you'd never know it because he works equally as hard on his non-dominant hand. He's the kind of player that if I pulled him and told him to go get two more buckets, he'd just go do it. I honestly think he's one of the best attackmen in the state, and his stats are a good foundation for that claim. Lastly, he's just a really good human being, he's a leader, and with all his aggressive play he's very rarely in the penalty box.” 5 Questions w/ Mason AndersonTH: When/why did you start playing lacrosse? MA: I decided to try lacrosse after I went to my cousins wedding down in Arizona. They love lacrosse and would go outside and shoot with me to help me get more interested. Good morning lacrosse fans. Thank you for taking time out of your day for the Utah Lax Report. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to shoot me a note: tim@timhaslam.com. Interview w/ Goose It Lacrosse Founders Jackson & Boston EarlI'm very excited about this podcast because it's about local small business and giving back, both of which are things I love. Jackson and Boston Earl started Goose It Lacrosse after noticing the lack of lifestyle focused lacrosse apparel. I also love that they donate 10% of proceeds to JDRF which is a Type 1 diabetes research fund. You can find out why by listening to the podcast. Don't forget to subscribe and leave a rating! While you're out and about at games, stop by Vessel Kitchen. Vessel Kitchen has locations in Midvale, Sandy, 9th + 9th and Kimball Junction. Before we dive in, I'd like to thank Patrick Carr from the Standard-Examiner for his article this week about lacrosse. We had a long chat about the history of the game and more. Go check it out here. Also, Dusty Litster and Dane Stewart from Game Night Live on KSL did a great 18 minute recap of the lacrosse action so far. You can watch it here. If all goes well, I should be joining the GNL team in the booth this week and I'm really looking forward to it. Week 6 Coaches PollsNo. 1 Corner Canyon - The Chargers beat Skyridge, 26-0, on Thursday and will face No. 5 American Fork on Tuesday. Corner Canyon has scored 20 or more goals in its last five games. I'm not certain that will change here but American Fork only gives up 5.7 goals per game on average. No matter the score, I suspect Corner Canyon will win by at least 8 as a conservative estimate. No. 2 Olympus - The Titans beat Timpview, 13-8 (Highlights), on Wednesday and Alta, 10-5, on Friday, which is likely why they jumped to the No. 2 spot over Farmington. The Titans are still No. 3 in the RPI but have a much tougher schedule than Farmington, so I suspect if they continue to win, they'll jump Farmington there too. Olympus takes on region foes East on Tuesday and Skyline on Friday, which could be a great chapter for the rivalry. When will we see a lacrosse traveling trophy for this rivalry like ‘The Rock' for their football rivalry? I believe Waterford/Judge has an old bucket helmet that has been used as a traveling trophy in the past. I'd love to see more traveling trophies to be honest. No. 3 Farmington - After a midweek contest with Bountiful was rescheduled due to weather, the Phoenix beat Bonneville, 18-4, on Friday. Only region games remain on the schedule, with games against Woods Cross and Box Elder this week. No. 4 Mountain Ridge - One of the better games on the schedule for the week will take place on Tuesday when the Sentinels host Timpview on Tuesday. Mountain Ridge won the first game in the series, 13-11, on March 15. No. 5 American Fork - The Cavemen beat Skyridge, 17-4, on Tuesday, then edged Westlake, 12-7, on Thursday. A tough week lies ahead with No. 1 Corner Canyon on Tuesday, then Lone Peak on Thursday. No. 6 Park City - A 19-4 win over Spanish Fork and two region games this week (Maple Mountain & Salem Hills) set the stage for potentially the toughest remaining schedule of any team. After this week, the Miners host No. 9 Brighton (4/27), Wasatch (4/30) and No. 4 Mountain Ridge (5/8) then have a regular-season finale at No. 2 Olympus on May 11. No. 7 Green Canyon - The Wolves bested Sky View, 17-3, on Wednesday and will take on Mountain Crest on Wednesday and Ridgeline on Friday. No. 8 Davis - The Darts beat Layton, 18-0, on Tuesday then beat Highland, 16-1, on Thursday. The Darts have two great road games this week beginning with Northridge on Tuesday and Weber on Thursday. No. 9 Brighton - The Bengals re-enter the poll after a 13-4 win over Bountiful on Tuesday and an 18-4 win over Copper Hills on Thursday. Brighton will play three home games this week: Monday against Maple Mountain, Wednesday versus Skyline and No. 4 Mountain Ridge on Friday. The Bengals finish the season with No. 6 Park City (4/27), East (4/28), Highland (5/5) and No. 2 Olympus on May 7 in a game that will likely determine the Region 6 champion. No. 10 Juan Diego - It will be interesting how the RPI treats the Soaring Eagle moving forward. After a 12-4 win over Judge on Tuesday they stayed at No. 4 in the RPI but after a 20-0 win over UMA on Friday, they dropped to No. 6. If we look at the five remaining games for Juan Diego, the opponent's RPI is as follows: Cedar Valley (48), Waterford (12), Judge (43), UMA (58), Cedar Valley (48). Obviously, these numbers change daily, but let's just say that the Waterford game on 4/27 is a must-win for both Juan Diego and Waterford. My uneducated guess is that the winner will stay in the bottom of the Division A bracket while the loser will go to the Division B bracket. Waterford remaining schedule: Judge (43), Juan Diego (6), Jordan (56), Cedar Valley (48), Judge (43), UMA (58). It will be interesting to see what these games will do the the Ravens RPI as well. If the season ended today, here's what the playoff brackets would look like: Boys Division ABoys Division BBoys Division CWe're getting into the heart of region play so let's see how those are shaking out. Region 1 (In region record): Davis (7-0), Fremont (6-1), Weber (4-2), Northridge (4-3), Syracuse (3-4), Roy (2-5), Clearfield (1-5), Layton (0-7)Region 3: Bingham (6-0), Riverton (4-1), Copper Hills (2-2), Herriman (2-3), West Jordan (2-3), Jordan (1-4), West (0-4)Region 4: Corner Canyon (3-0), American Fork (4-0), Lone Peak (2-1), Westlake (2-2), Pleasant Grove (0-4), Skyridge (0-4)Region 5: Farmington (3-0), Bountiful (2-0), Bonneville (3-1), Box Elder (1-3), Viewmont (1-3), Woods Cross (0-3)Region 6: Skyline (1-0), East (0-1), Brighton (0-0), Highland (0-0), Olympus (0-0)Region 7: Mountain Ridge (6-0), Timpview (5-1), Alta (4-2), Lehi (3-3), Timpanogos (2-4), Orem (1-5), Mountain View (0-6)Region 8: Park City (3-0), Wasatch (4-0), Maple Mountain (3-2), Salem Hills (2-2), Springville (1-2), Spanish Fork (1-2), Payson (0-2), Provo (0-4)Region 10: Juan Diego (3-0), Waterford (1-1), Judge (1-1), Cedar Valley (1-1), UMA (0-3)Region 11: Green Canyon (3-0), Sky View (3-1), Bear River (2-1), Ridgeline (2-2), Logan (1-3), Mountain Crest (0-4)No. 1 Park City - The Miners beat Spanish Fork, 24-0, on Friday. The Miners will take on Maple Mountain on Wednesday, No. 6 Alta on Thursday and Salem Hills on Friday. No. 2 Mountain Ridge - The Sentinels moved up a spot in the poll after a 24-2 win over Mountain View on Tuesday. Mountain Ridge will take on Timpview this Tuesday and Orem on Thursday. No. 3 Brighton - The Bengals will have to wait until May 11 to see who really is the No. 2 team in the state as they take on Mountain Ridge that day. In the meantime, the Bengals will build off its 16-2 win over Highland on Wednesday and a 23-4 win over Copper Hills on Friday. Like the Brighton boys, the girls team may have the toughest remaining schedule with Skyline (4/21), Bingham (4/23), East (4/28), Lone Peak (4/30), Olympus (5/7 - potential Region 6 championship), Davis (5/10), Mountain Ridge (5/11). No. 4 Olympus - The Titans are riding high after beating Pleasant Grove, 27-5, on Wednesday and Timpview, 23-4, on Friday. They also sit at No. 1 in the RPI. May should be an interesting month for the Titans who take on Skyline (5/5), Brighton (5/7) and Park City on May 11. No. 5 Skyridge - Three games this week for the Falcons will be a challenge beginning on Tuesday against Pleasant Grove. On Thursday, Skyridge hosts Westlake then hosts No. 4 Olympus on Friday. No. 6 Alta - Last week was a dominant one for the Hawks who beat Orem, 25-1, and Timpanogos, 14-1. A Tuesday showdown against Mountain View on Tuesday should prepare the Hawks for a Thursday home game against No. 1 Park City. No. 7 Waterford - The Ravens should cruise to victory this week with games against Judge on Tuesday and Juan Diego on Friday. No. 8 Davis - The Darts won't be tested again until May 10th when it faces No. 3 Brighton. No. 9 Wasatch - As votes were coming in I thought this was a typo, but the Wasps are 6-1 and are doing it in style. Only region games remain but that means a showdown with No. 1 Park City on April 30. No. 10 Herriman - This Tuesday will be telling for the Mustangs who take on 7-1 West Jordan who they'll also face on May 6. In the RPI, Herriman is No. 12 and West Jordan is No. 13. If the season ended today, here's what the playoff brackets would look like. Q&A With Syracuse Attack/Mid Brooklyn SuttlemyreCourtesy of Kevin D Hansen PhotographyMy Q&A today is with Brooklyn Suttlemyre who is a Junior at Syracuse High School. Suttlemyre is currently second in the state in goals (58) and points (71) and is winning 0.578 of draw controls. She has two, 12 point games this season where she scored 10 goals and had 2 assists. Suttlemyre hopes to play lacrosse at the next level and wants to be an elementary school teacher and lacrosse coach. “Brooklyn just loves everything about lacrosse, practice, games, teammates, and shooting in the backyard,” said Syracuse head coach Adam Suttlemyre, who is also Brooklyn's dad. “As her coach I love that she likes working on the little things, staying after practice to shoot, and trying to help the newer girls on the team no matter their skill level. She is a very positive player and is an extension of myself on the field. She is very coachable and wants to learn and improve no matter the coach. She has the ability to separate coach and dad which is amazing. Before practice and after I'm like any other dad trying to coach my daughter, and the relationship is just that. But during practice its coach and I can't say enough about that because it can be hard for parents to coach their kid. As a dad I'm Just grateful for the time we get to spend together. Not too many coaches get the opportunity to spend time with their daughter for hours a day, playing a game I have grown to love because of her.”5 Questions w/ Brooklyn SuttlemyreTH: When/why did you start playing lacrosse? BS: I started playing lacrosse in the 5th grade. My elementary teacher coached for a local high school team and it really got me interested in the game. She encouraged me to start playing and I haven't stopped since!TH: What is your favorite part about lacrosse?BS: I love how fast paced the game is! And of course, I love the friendships and my amazing teammates who I wouldn't know without lacrosse.TH: What is your stick of choice?BS: I currently have an STX Exult 600 with a mesh pocket and I love it! TH: What is your favorite field on?BS: Kaysville Jr High field, this was where I played Davis Club lacrosse and Jr. lacrosse. This was the field where I really grew to love the game. I have so many memories there and made friendships that I will never forget. That field became a second home and I will always love playing there. TH: How/why did you pick your jersey number?BS: My dad was number 13 in high school. He is one of my biggest role models, so I thought it would be fitting if I could carry on the tradition and wear his number as well.Utah Lacrosse HistoryIn 1940, Donald C. McMillan, a Salt Lake City native, joined the Army lacrosse team while enrolled at West Point. McMillan is listed as a member of the team in the 1941 and 1942 Howitzer, the West Point yearbook. The yearbooks back then were what seemed like a year behind as the 1940 team was published in the 1941 Howitzer. Although the yearbooks' recaps don't mention McMillan, his bio states he had 'devoted himself to lacrosse, bridge, barbershop harmony, and tall stories.' McMillan was praised at home in an April 18, 1941 clipping called "Utahn Makes Team" from the Salt Lake Telegram in which the author states that McMillan 'qualified' for the Army lacrosse team. The news came from the public relations officer, Lieutenant Colonel Meade Wildrick. It's unclear whether Wildrick reached out to local papers or if the Salt Lake Telegram was actively searching for stories at West Point and happened upon McMillan. The 1940 Black Knights went 7-3 with a season finale win against Navy, 13-2. The 1941 team finished with an 8-2 record and once again bested Navy, 7-5. Army went on to win a National Championship just two years later but McMillan had graduated in 1941.1940 & 1941 Army Lacrosse Teams in the Howitzer yearbookGoalie Goals & The PLLIf you know me, I love a good long pole goal and a goalie goal even more. Here's a gem from Maryland goalie Logan McNaney on Sunday. Also this week, the PLL announced it would be making a stop in Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium on August 20-21. I personally think this is a fantastic time for the PLL to come here. It will be a little toasty, but it's been awhile since I've been warm at a lacrosse game. I also like that it's only two days. Sure, we get less games, but I'll be honest, three days of games is a lot. We'll also get the Quarterfinals of the playoffs which means the games should be great. Tickets aren't on sale yet for SLC, but you can sign up to be notified on their site when they do become available. I'm also really excited about this: The caption says, “We're honored to share this Land Acknowledgment, and together we recognize that our games will be played on lands that have been inhabited, cared for and respected by Indigenous people for centuries. They are the originators of lacrosse.” Pretty cool if you ask me. That's it for this week. No. 2 Farmington - The Phoenix handled Northridge on Wednesday, 16-4, and edge Wasatch, 12-10, on Friday in one of the better games I've been to this year. I have to hand it to the Wasps, they came to play and their crowd gets loud. No. 3 Olympus - The Titans cruised to a 17-3 victory over Box Elder on Friday. One of the marquee matchups this week has the Titans heading to Provo to take on No. 10 Timpview on Wednesday. Olympus also faces Alta on Friday. No. 4 Mountain Ridge - Mountain Ridge heads to Mountain View on Tuesday. No. 5 Park City - The Miners beat No. 8 Davis, 21-8, on Tuesday and will host Payson on Wednesday. Spanish Fork will host the Miners on Friday. No. 6 American Fork - On Tuesday, American Fork will travel to Skyridge followed by a home game against Westlake on Thursday. The following week, AF has Corner Canyon at home and Lone Peak on the road. No. 7 Green Canyon - I suspect the Wolves will win out starting with a game against Sky View on Wednesday and Bear River on Friday. No. 8 Davis - The loss to Park City on Tuesday led to a 19-7 win over Syracuse on Thursday. Layton on Tuesday and Highland on Thursday will setup region play for the rest of the way for Darts. No. 9 Juan Diego - The Soaring Eagle took down Wasatch on Wednesday, 11-9, and Herriman on Friday, 17-3. Juan Diego will finish the rest of its schedule with region play beginning on Tuesday as it hosts Judge.No. 10 Timpview - No. 3 Olympus comes to town on Wednesday then a home game against Orem on Thursday will round out the week for the T-Birds. Other games I'll be watching with interest: Brighton @ Bountiful, Weber @ Syracuse, Copper Hills @ Bingham, Bingham @ Riverton, Bonneville @ Farmington and Skyline @ Bingham. If you can't tell, I'm anxious to see what Bingham is really about. Three wins this week would be impressive. No. 1 Park City - The Miners will face Payson on Wednesday and Spanish Fork on Friday. No. 2 Brighton - The Bengals host Copper Hills on Friday. No. 3 Mountain Ridge - Despite losing to Herriman on Tuesday, 15-13, the Sentinels stayed put in the polls. A home game against Mountain View is the lone game for the Sentinels this week. No. 4 Skyridge - The Falcons will be tested this week with a game at American Fork on Tuesday and a home game against No. 10 Corner Canyon on Thursday. No. 5 Olympus - The Titans are newcomers to the poll and made quite the entrance. A 17-14 win over Riverton and a 13-12 win over Waterford put Olympus on the map. Olympus will host Pleasant Grove on Wednesday and Timpview on Friday. Sophomore Eva Thorn (12g, 4a) leads the team. No. 6 Waterford - The Ravens beat Highland on Tuesday and lost to Olympus on Friday. Back-to-back games this week begin on Wednesday against Juan Diego and Thursday against Cedar Valley. No. 7 Alta - The Hawks will take on Orem on Tuesday and Timpanogos on Thursday. No. 8 Davis - The Darts beat Syracuse, 17-6 (Highlights), on Thursday and will take on Layton on Tuesday and East on Friday. No. 9 Herriman - The Mustangs entered the picture with a 15-13 win over Mountain Ridge on Tuesday. An away game at Riverton on Tuesday and a home game against West on Thursday lies ahead. No. 10 Corner Canyon - A key region game on Tuesday against Lone Peak and an away game Thursday against Skyridge welcome the Chargers back from Spring Break. Several region games take place this week as team vie for a better position. Including the games mentioned above, Farmington @ Bountiful, Bear River @ Sky View and Green Canyon @ Ridgeline are games to keep an eye on. UHSAA RPI ReleasedView the UHSAA RPIs here: Boys RPI | Girls RPI - The RPIs are updated as scores are entered into MaxPreps so it's constantly changing. One thing (maybe the only thing) that I love about an RPI system like is used in lacrosse is the fact that each year before the first whistle blows, every team, no matter how many players, talent, coaches, etc. has the same statistical probability or chance to win the championship. Now, as the games begin, that quickly diminishes, but in theory, everyone is equal at the beginning of the season. This is why I feel the winner of the Division A bracket is the 2021 State Champion. Division B and C winners are champions of those brackets, not the state. When/if we divide into classifications, that's another story. At that point we'd have a 6A State Champion, a 5A State Champion and a 4A State Champion. Another ‘pro' to the RPI is that no matter the school size, you can compete for the top title. Some see that as a disadvantage (‘We are a small school, we shouldn't have to compete with the big boys!'), but I'd argue as a competitor, you want to beat the best regardless of school size. That feels like an excuse to me and quite frankly, in lacrosse, it doesn't hold true. In fact, of the 27 top tier titles that have been awarded in boys lacrosse history, only two current 6A schools have won one: Bingham in 1999 and Corner Canyon in 2015. Now, is an RPI system perfect? No, I don't think it ever will be. As the RPI was released on Friday, the messages started pouring in and like anything, those who don't favor the RPI were the loudest. To be clear, I don't have a say in how the playoffs are determined, but I am a firm believer that the cream rises to the top, no matter what seed they are in the playoffs. I had a whole theory written out about why some teams are where they are but I'm not confident in it yet. I'm going to save it until we get a little further down the line before releasing it. If we look at the ratings from LaxNumbers (Boys | Girls) it certainly feels more in line with traditional thinking. However, the fact is that we're governed by the UHSAA RPI so here's what the brackets would like if the season ended today based on the UHSAA RPI. I decided to create them on another site to save space in the newsletter. Boys Division ABoys Division BBoys Division CGirls Division AGirls Division BGirls Division CBoys Division AThere's a couple region matchups (CC/LP, Fremont/Davis) and some great on paper matchups. Timpview knocked Farmington out of the 2019 Division B playoffs so that would be a fun rematch. For the history buffs, Park City/Waterford (two original teams) would be a fun one to see. I think the 8/9 seed, Green Canyon v. American Fork game would be excellent.Girls Division A I'm going to be honest and say I don't know as much about these teams but Brighton at the No. 5 seed is interesting. They have been the No. 2 team in the coaches poll every week. Mountain Ridge beat Riverton, 17-8 on Thursday. Waterford is the No. 10 seed and only lost to the No. 2 seed Olympus, 13-12, on Friday. Region RankingsI took the average ratings of each region and here's how it shakes out for the boys: Region 4 - 0.616 - This should be no surprise since four out of six teams are in the top 16 with the lowest team only being at 30. Region 6 - 0.596 - Five teams span from 3 to 33. Region 1 - 0.517 - Having three teams in the Top 16 help, however, Layton at 53 and Clearfield at 44 aren't helping. Region 5 - 0.498 - Despite having the No. 2 team, the rest of the conference is in the 21-47 range. Region 11 - 0.487 - Green Canyon leads at 8 but the other five teams are 23-52.Region 7 - 0.472 - Mountain Ridge at 6 and Timpview at 15 are great, but the other five teams are 35, 37, 43, 43 and 56. Region 10 - 0.437 - Juan Diego at 5 and Waterford at 10 are keeping this region out of the bottom with Judge at 46, Cedar Valley at 50 and UMA at 58. Region 8 - 0.422 - This region runs the gamut with Park City at 7 and Payson at 55. Region 3 - 0.419 - The top team is Riverton at 17 but four teams are in the 40-57 range. For the girls, these numbers are a little off because some teams have only played (or reported) one or two games and some are only playing region games. Region 11 - 0.549 - The top team is Ridgeline at 6 with the lowest being Mountain Crest at 38. Region 4 - 0.541 - Teams range from 8 (Skyridge) and 42 (Westlake).Region 10 - 0.526 - With only four teams, Waterford leads at 10 while Cedar Valley comes in at 34. Region 1 - 0.502 - Davis is at 3 but Northridge (44) and Clearfield (52) are keeping this region in the middle of the pack. Region 6 - 0.478 - Olympus at 2 and Brighton at 5 are helping to offset Highland at 46 and East at 54. Region 7 - 0.475 - Mountain Ridge (4) and Alta (9) are the leaders of the region with Orem (50) and Mountain View (53) at the back. Region 3 - 0.465 - West Jordan leads at 12. Region 5 - 0.461 - Farmington comes in at 7 but the next closest team is 24 (Woods Cross) with Viewmont at 51. Region 8 - 0.379 - Park City leads the charge at 1, Wasatch comes in at 19 but the rest are 31, 43, 45, 48, 56, 57. It's certainly going to be interesting to see how this plays out.Next, I took the RPI and organized it by classification to see what those could look like if we ever go to that method. This assumes 3A, 2A, 1A schools would be in the 4A class and this only includes the top 16 teams in 6A and 5A and top 8 in 4A. Boys 6A Boys 5ABoys 4AGirls 6AGirls 5AGirls 4AI won't go this in depth every week, that was a lot of data! College UpdateUtah faces No. 6 Virginia on Saturday at 10:00 am. The game will be on ESPNU. Good morning lacrosse fans. Thank you for taking time out of your day for the Utah Lax Report. Don't forget to forward to a friend, it's the best way for the newsletter to grow.Interview with Olympus Head Coach Nick MerrellMy podcast interview this week is with Olympus Head Coach Nick Merrell. Merrell played at West and the University of Utah. After graduation, he coached at West with his brother, Corey, and then moved to Olympus in 2017. In the podcast we talk about when Utah went to Colorado in 2008 and beat CU and CSU in the same weekend. Here's my recap from that weekend. Week 4 Coaches PollsBefore we dive into the polls, I want to set the stage for the postseason. To be 100% clear, the UHSAA RPI is the sole source for playoff position. The first update will be released this Friday, April 9, at 9 a.m. on the UHSAA website. The coaches poll is a fun poll that I conduct to get the coaches' opinion of where teams stack up. After all, they are the ones on the field, not the computer. No. 1 Corner Canyon - The Chargers went 2-0 last week against Region 4 foes Pleasant Grove (20-5) and Westlake (20-0). Corner Canyon is off this week and will take on Skyridge on 4/15. No. 2 Farmington - The Park City losses meant Farmington moved up one spot in the polls despite not playing last week. The Phoenix will head on the road this week for a 4/7 showdown against Northridge and a sneaky good game on Friday at Wasatch. Two Wasps (Josh Nokes and Cam Horner) played for Farmington in 2019. No. 3 Olympus - After a week off (in Hawaii), the Titans will host Box Elder on Friday. No. 4 American Fork - The Cavemen beat Region 4 opponent Lone Peak on Tuesday, 9-5 (Deseret News Recap), then followed that win with a 10-6 win over Pleasant Grove. American Fork will take the week off and then travel to Skyridge on 4/13 and host Westlake on 4/15. No. 5 Mountain Ridge - A 15-0 trouncing of Timpanogos on Tuesday is a great way to head into Spring Break. The Sentinels are in action again on 4/13 against Mountain View. No. 6 Park City - The Miners fell four spots in this week's poll which is the pollsters correcting the results from two weeks ago when Corner Canyon and American Fork beat the Miners. Last week, the Miners beat Region 8 opponents and newer programs Springville and Provo, 30-1, respectively. A follower on Twitter asked if the 30 goal limit was the new 20 goal limit and I'm here to say that no, it's not. If we look at the box score from that game, 11 Miners tallied at least a point. The leader had 10 points which isn't unheard of in a lacrosse game. The Provo box score shows the Miners were leading 20-0 at the half then went 5-0, 5-1 to finish the game. Park City will take on No. 8 Davis on Tuesday in Kaysville. Say or think what you will, but I think it's a good time to bring up the fact that we've seen a ton of blowouts this year and it feels like it's been more than normal. One coach thinks it's a goalie problem with the hypothesis being there are only a handful of great goalies and no one is stopping shots. I'm okay with that theory. Goalie is a tricky position and we certainly don't have a ton of goalie coaches out there coaching up the goalies. In my experience, it's the position most coaches know the least about. I personally think this is one of many manifestations of sanctioning growing pains. Springville is an offshoot of the old Spanish Fork Warriors so only a handful of players at most have played before. Provo was a first-year program last year and has a new coach this year. I think we'll continue to see these types of scores for the next 2-3 years as teams/programs become more established. I think if we ran a poll, most would say that 30 goals is too many. No. 7 Timpview - A 19-0 win over Mountain View on Monday and an 8-7 loss to Brighton (Highlights) on Friday is a tricky way to head into Spring Break with a 4/14 matchup with No. 3 Olympus on the horizon. No. 8 Davis - I've watched Davis play in-person twice and I'm convinced they have the pieces to be a top team in the state. The Darts host No. 6 Park City on Tuesday in a game that will surely boost the winners' RPI. Davis also hosts Syracuse on Thursday. Green Canyon @ Brighton - Full GalleryNo. 9 Green Canyon - The Wolves enter the polls for the first time this year after beating Brighton, 10-8, on Tuesday and Mountain Crest, 21-2, on Friday. I've talked to two coaches who have played the Wolves and one felt they were better than the score reflected and the other said they were the best team they've faced so far. The Wolves should coast through the remainder of its schedule and enter the playoffs with a lone loss to Corner Canyon. I'm just glad we have representation from Cache County. With the Wolves in the polls, we have three teams from Salt Lake County, three from Utah County, two from Davis County, one from Summit County, and one from Cache County. No. 10 Lone Peak - The Knights lost to American Fork on Tuesday, 9-5, then beat Skyridge, 19-6 on Thursday. A week off will give the Knights time to prepare for a 4/15 showdown against Pleasant Grove. Wasatch v. Bonneville HighlightsNo. 1 Park City - The Miners opened Region 8 play with a 22-0 win over Springville and a 20-8 win over No. 5 Waterford (Deseret News Recap). A week off will lead to more region games against Payson and Spanish Fork. The Miners have 12 players who have tallied at least one goal this season. Senior Kendell Keblish is averaging 6.4 points per game. No. 2 Brighton - The Bengals beat Jordan, 22-5, and will take on Copper Hills on 4/16. No. 3 Mountain Ridge - The Sentinels face Herriman on Tuesday and No. 8 Riverton on Thursday. No. 4 Alta - The Hawks beat Region 8 foe Lehi, 22-2, on Tuesday and will take a week off before taking on Orem on 4/13. Eliza Johnson continues to dominate for the Hawks while averaging 5 goals per game. No. 5 Waterford - The Ravens had a chance to move up the rankings but Park City had other plans, sending Waterford home with a 20-8 loss. Waterford faces Highland on Tuesday and Olympus on Friday. No. 6 Skyridge - Skyridge beat Westlake, 19-7, on Tuesday then beat Lone Peak, 13-7, on Thursday in a key Region 4 battle. The Falcons have the week off before taking in No. 8 American Fork on 4/13 and No. 7 Corner Canyon on 4/15. Sky View @ Bonneville - Full GalleryNo. 7 Corner Canyon - The Chargers beat Pleasant Grove on Tuesday, 15-6, then trounced Westlake, 19-2, on Friday. Corner Canyon enters Spring Break this week then takes on Lone Peak on 4/13 and Skyridge on 4/15. No. 8 Riverton - The Silverwolves will take on Olympus on Tuesday in a battle of unbeaten teams. Riverton will then travel to No. 3 Mountain Ridge on Thursday. No. 9 American Fork - The Lady Cavemen picked up a key win on Tuesday against Lone Peak, 14-10, and a 19-9 win over Pleasant Grove on Thursday. A home game against No. 6 Skyridge on 4/13 will welcome the team back from Spring Break. No. 10 Davis - The Darts have scored 85 goals and allowed just 16 in 5 games. I suspect the trend will continue until a May 10th affair with No. 2 Brighton. Q&A with Waterford Freshman Spencer ReaganSpencer Reagan (35, Waterford) wins a faceoff against Highland - Full GalleryI'm always trying to find a hidden gem when it comes to telling stories about lacrosse in Utah. When going over the stats on MaxPreps I had to find out more about a Freshman at Waterford named Spencer Reagan who is leading the state at the faceoff X. I saw him live against Highland and he's impressive. Here's his stat line through six games: v. Orem: 17/19, 1G, 1Av. Payson: 9/11, 2G, 2Av. Green Canyon: 22/27, 2G, 1Av. Wasatch: 24/26v. Juan Diego: 17/18, 1Gv. Highland: 24/25, 1GThe two faceoffs lost in the Juan Diego and Highland games were from violations. Reagan is currently winning 89.7% of faceoffs. I went back to the utahlax.org site to see how this compares to past years. In 2019, Christian Dimond finished 258/328 which is 78.66%. In 2018, the league leader was winning 78.72% of faceoffs. Jace Thomas (Bountiful/2014), who is regarded as one of the best faceoff specialists to come out of Utah, won 82.43% of faceoffs his Junior year. Reagan should keep pace through the remainder of the Waterford schedule. “I can't say enough good things about Spencer,” said Waterford Head Coach Jack Matthews. “One thing that makes him so dangerous as a faceoff guy is his plethora of moves that he can use. He can win it to himself forward or backward and he can win it to either wing guy. This makes him really hard to defend against and it all comes from his hard work outside of practice. He goes home and does reps, he studies film, he plays in as many tournaments as he can, and so much more. He's also no slouch once he wins it either. He's making plays in transition and he even stays and plays offense for us.”After high school, Reagan hopes to play college lacrosse while studying business. 5 Questions w/ Spencer ReaganTH: When/why did you start playing lacrosse?SR: I became intrigued with lacrosse in the summer of my 5th-grade year and attended a camp put on by the University of Utah. Then, the coach of the Waterford IMLAX 5/6 team, Kelly Caroll, generously provided me the opportunity to play for Waterford in the Fall of that year. I am very appreciative of Coach Carroll for giving me my first chance to play this amazing game. TH: What is your favorite part about lacrosse?SR: My favorite aspects of lacrosse are the friendships I make with my teammates/coaches and the ‘life lessons' lacrosse provides me. TH: What is your stick of choice?SR: My stick of choice is a StringKing Mark 2F stiff on a Maverik shaft, strung with Hero 3.0 strung by Lorenzo Velluto. Lorenzo is a stringing wizard.TH: What is your favorite field to play lacrosse on?SR: There are two fields that I love to play at: Waterford because the field and school are such beautiful places and Troy Park in Maryland because the fields there are very well maintained. TH: How/why did you pick your jersey number? SR: I chose my jersey number because there were only two extra-large jerseys left and of those two, I liked #35 the best!College UpdateMensIf you weren't watching the Utah v. Boston game on Saturday, you missed out. The Utes fell behind early, 2-0. It looked like it was going to be a long day, but the Utes held strong and traded blows with the Terriers in a game that needed two overtimes to find a winner with the Utes taking home an 11-10 win (Recap | Box Score). Wilson is the smallest player on the field yet scored the biggest goal of his career. How? A great, hard, roll dodge, overhand shot, bounced in the right spot to hit the top shelf or in other words: fundamentals. Fundamentals win ball games. The Utes head to Virginia on April 17. Westminster fell to No. 18 Colorado Mesa, 16-6 (Recap | Box Score), on Friday. Herriman alum Dylan Checketts went 19 of 26 at the faceoff X for CMU. The Griffins go on a two-game road swing this weekend with a game against CSU-Pueblo on Friday and Adams State on Sunday. BYU beat Concordia-Irvine, 14-6, on Thursday and Boise State, 12-3, on Friday. The Cougars will return the favor to the Eagles as they head to Concordia-Irvine on Saturday then take on Chapman on Monday. UVU beat Dominican, 11-10, on Monday then lost to Concordia-Irvine, 11-10. UVU will also travel to Southern California to take on Concordia-Irvine on Friday and Chapman on Saturday. Utah State will head to Boise State on Saturday for a showdown against the Broncos. WomensWestminster beat Fort Lewis on Thursday, 21-17 (Recap | Box Score), then took to the road beat Adams State on Saturday, 20-0 (Recap | Box Score). The Griffins will host UC-Colorado Springs on Friday. BYU beat Utah State, 8-6, on Saturday. The Cougars will play UVU on 4/7 and Utah on 4/10. Good morning lacrosse fans. Thank you for taking time out of your day for the Utah Lax Report. Don't forget to forward to a friend, it's the best way for the newsletter to grow. Be sure to follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Let's get to it.Interview w/ Mark Stoutc/o BYU LacrosseThis week's podcast is an interview with Mark Stout. Stout has been around the game in Utah since 1981, when he arrived at BYU. He was instrumental in the founding of the high school league in 1994. He has coached at every level and is frequently found on the BYU sidelines, where I first met him. I love this picture of him because there are few times you'll find him without a hood on.You can listen to the latest podcast above or on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Don't forget to subscribe and leave a rating! While we were talking about the podcast, Stout sent me this picture:This is from the very first Utah high school lacrosse championship in the fall of 1994 featuring teams from Alta, Park City, Provo (Orem/Timpview), Sunnyside (Brighton/East/Judge/Rowland Hall) and Waterford. Sunnyside beat Waterford to become the first champion. It was taken in Provo and Stout is in the very top right of the picture. Some of the people included in this picture: Brian Blogette, Chris Radar, Dave Allen, Mason Goodhand, Bob Capner, Brad Hawes, Scott Clarke, Clint Fjeldsted, Andy Stockman, Pete Stevenson. This picture represented the entire high school league at the time. It's a testament to the many, many people who have helped grow the game in Utah over the years. If you're stepping on a field this week, it's because of the people in this picture. Sunnyside is the name of the street that Sunnyside Park is located on in Salt Lake City. Many lacrosse games and practices have taken place there since 1994. While looking for pictures of Stout at BYU I found these gems from The Banyan which is the BYU yearbook. While Stout isn't in them, I still feel they are worth sharing. c/o The Banyan, 1982, 19832021 High School Coaches PollThe 2021 High School Coaches Poll is presented by Vessel Kitchen. The man shown in the picture here is stealing our trailer with 200+ sets of rental gear that was ready to be placed in the hands of some excited players in Northern Utah. This week I get to speak with Julian Florez, former Hobbs High School runner, Glendale Community College, Adams State, and UNM runner. This episode commemorates one year since the 2020 Marathon Olympic Trials, which Julian qualified and ran. We delve into that, the build up, and his routine. We talk about running in high school, different colleges, and continuing running post collegiately. He gets into disappointments and triumphs. He talks about his running family and what that means to him, as well as what running means to him. The friendships he's made through this sport that have followed him. We also get into his work with Heart and Sole as well as his art, which you can also find in his line at Heart and Sole. Overall it was a fun conversation that I hope you enjoy as well. Keep working, be strong, be kind, and keep running, New Mexico.
Good morning lacrosse fans. Thank you for taking time out of your day for the Utah Lax Report. Don't forget to forward to a friend, it's the best way for the newsletter to grow. Let's get to it. Interview w/ Waterford Athletic Director Craig Morrisc/o Ben HaslamCraig Morris is one of a handful of people in the lacrosse community who has seen the sport grown from a few teams in the mid 90's to what it is today. He has coached at the high school and college level and was a huge part of the sanctioning effort. Please take a moment to listen to our conversation, there are tons of great nuggets of information in it. You can listen to the latest podcast above or on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Feeling hungry? Branden Wilson (2G, 2A), Tyler Bradbury (1G, 3A) and Jack Barron (2G, 1A) led the Utes. Box Score | Recap | Video. When Utah announced going NCAA D-I, it was exciting to think about a Utah/Denver rivalry but let's be honest; the Utah/Air Force rivalry fits the rivalry mold much better for the time being. The Utes face Loyola next Saturday. BYU went to Colorado and faced Adams State on Friday and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday. The Cougars beat the Grizzlies, 15-1, while taking down the Thunderwolves 18-5. Here's the 2021 schedule for BYU:UVU took to the road and beat Concordia, 10-7. The Wolverines will head to Colorado for games against Adams State and CSU-Pueblo this weekend. The MCLA released its plan for something resembling a postseason this year. I think it's easy for most of us in Utah to think things are somewhat back to normal but when dealing with a nationwide organization, it's not so simple. Enter the 2021 MCLA Invitational. This sums it up: I had a thought the other day; does a shortened season last year with no season or no meaningful season this year help or hinder a players desire to play? Let's say you were a Freshman in college in 2019 at an MCLA school. You rode the bench or maybe got a little playing time. Last year, as a Sophomore, your team played 3 games and you saw no time before your season was cancelled. This year, you are a Junior in school but still a Sophomore in eligibility. Your team isn't playing or doesn't want to go to the MCLA Invitational. Does this make you want to play your Senior season more or less? Will teams be younger overall next year? What do you think? Utahns AbroadRyan Baker (Juan Diego) had 3 groundballs on defense for Bryant in a 14-8 loss to Stony Brook.Logann Eldredge (Herriman) had 4 goals and 3 assists against Kent State on Friday. Bubba Fairman (Brighton) had 1 goal and a groundball for Maryland in a 20-9 win over Michigan. Zack Franckowiak (Corner Canyon) had a groundball for Rutgers in a 11-9 upset over Penn State. Several Utahns featured in the Southern Virginia 21-16 loss to Hampden-Sydney. Box Score | Video - Tennison Schmidt (Brighton) had 6 goals and 1 assist. Chandler Wescott (Bountiful/BYU) had 4 goals and 3 assists. Dalon Hampshire (Bountiful/BYU) had 18 saves. On the Women's side at SVU, Alissa Johnson (Olympus) had 6 goals and 1 assist in a 14-13 win over Centre. Brett Hein and Devin Dixon give the panel some insight into the Wildcats week One hoops games.
On this episode I chat with Coach Mario Caetano of Adams State University. Coach Mario got his start in coaching at his alma mater Northern New Mexico College, while he was still receiving his undergraduate degree. He moved up the ranks and ended up becoming the top assistant coach & assistant Athletic Director. After 5 years on staff, his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he took some time away from college coaching. He was still involved with hoops on the AAU circuit, but worked at an elementary school & drove Uber and Lyft during his free time. Coach Mario ended up getting a call from the Northern New Mexico College Athletic Director, who offered him the Interim Head Coach position with only 8 games left in the season. That was another unique experience that Coach Mario dives into during our conversation. After bringing in 17 new recruits and removing the "interim" from his title, he was offered the top assistant position and recruiting coordinator title at Adams State University. He then made the decision to start a new journey at Adams State where he is currently in his first year. During this episode he dives into his journey in depth, explains what he has learned from 2020, advice for coaches, and so much more! Check it out!! For those who have never heard of Coach Vigil, he is a legend in the coaching of US Track and Filed, Cross Country, and distance running. He has helped develop a coaching program for coaching runners, and has taught coaches all over the US, and in many other countries around the world. Although he has accomplished many things, gotten many awards, and coached dozens of Olympians, Coach Vigil is most loved for his compassion and caring for the “whole person” and not just the athlete. Chasing Excellence is a book about Coach Vigil’s life. It starts by telling us how Joe Vigil grew up to a single mom who worked very hard to provide food and shelter for 3 boys and made sure that they were always in line. They didn’t have very much in terms of material but with the work ethic instilled by his mom, his desire to help people, and his passion for sports, Joe ended up accomplishing many things that some would not have thought possible. Coach Joe Vigil has touched the lives of many people he has met, and this book is full of stories about the impact he had on different people. Not all his runners went to the Olympics, but many did great things because Coach Vigil not only believed in them, but also helped them believe in themselves. In this episode of Running Book Reviews we had the pleasure of interviewing the author (and one of Coach Vigil's former athletes), Pat Melgares. If you are interested in getting a copy of this book, please consider getting it straight from the publisher, Soulstice Publishing. A portion of the proceeds are going to establish the Joe I. Vigil Scholarship at Adams State University, and buying the from the publisher helps with this: https://soulsticepublishing.com/product/chasing-excellence-book/Pat Melgares has also been compiling more stories about Adams State and Joe I. Got a two-star review on this here show the other day. The review, which was on the master Mat Talk feed and not this or the master Short Time feed, said they missed the longer shows and these short ones weren’t cutting it. First off, thank you for the feedback. Everyone has different tastes and this format has mostly been agreeable to listeners. This show, Short Time, actually started in this format in November of 2013. It went to interviews when the scores stopped, and the show grew from there. The interview shows aren’t done, but I’ve been busy handling the clients I have with the network. I’m also not going to chase the same interviews as everyone else. Doing things differently is what I’ve always done, but that being said, yes, I miss “my show” with “my interviews.” I’ll be picking them back up here soon, but I’ve always got a lot of irons in the fire. When my time becomes strained, I put my own shows on the back burner. I don’t put Short Time ahead of any other show on the network. These shots keep me fresh, help promote every level of wrestling and keep episodes in the feed. I don’t just want to stop doing shows and then lose the listeners. There’s over 70 wrestling podcasts out there. This was the second one. I know people have come and gone from the various Mat Talk shows. I like this format. I like the interview format, but this is also my business, I have to make sure my time is cost-effective. This is why I pitch the Patreon links at the end of each show. Maybe I can take the time away to develop the show ideas in the off-season, but as my wife says, wrestling has no off-season. I put out 448 episodes in 2019, always putting my clients and affiliate shows ahead of my own. Thanks for the feedback, constructive and positive. It’s all taken into consideration. That long winded intro is by your host, me, Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look back at the scores and more in the world of wrestling. Also, the Attack Style Wrestling Podcast will be coming back with NCAA champion Daryl Weber. We’ll record the first episode in over a year next week. In Duals: We lead with the first victory in over 60 years for Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose hosted NAIA Truett McConnell on Wednesday and shut out the Bears 44-0. It was a forfeit-laden meet. This is the first year of Division I wrestling for Presbyterian, which did have a team back in the early 1950s. It’s the smallest school in Division I and started both men’s and women’s wrestling this year. Closest match of the night came in Division II where Indianapolis edged Findlay 19-18 on criteria E - Total number of takedowns scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls. Also in Division II, Belmont Abbey topped Queens 36-12. Fairmont State beat Kent State-Tuscarawas, a varsity NCWA team, 35-0. It’s the first win since the program was added back at Fairmont State, but we’re not exactly sure if the Kent State branch campus is actually a countable opponent under NCAA rules. Fairmont State’s last win came at some point in the 1982-83 season. Fort Hays State beat Central Missouri 28-12. Second closest match of the night was in Division III where Pitt-Bradford topped Penn State Behrend 28-27. This one came down to the second criteria, most six-point victories, which favored Pitt-Bradford. Too many forfeits here though. In Division III, Castleton beat Rhode Island College 31-6, Springfield topped Norwich 37-9. North Central topped Chicago 22-15, Otterbein beat Case Western 38-15. Case Western Reserve did get one win on senior night as Connor Forrest got a fall in the first period to push the Spartans past Ohio Wesleyan 27-26. NAIA Cumberland University doubled up Division II Kentucky Wesleyan 30-15. In another forfeit-filled dual, NAIA Warner Pacific beat Division III Pacific 29-9. Just four matches were actually contested. Rochester (Minn.) blanked Northland, Itasca, Minnesota West and Ridgewater by a combined 227-0 to win their eighth straight Minnesota College Athletic Conference championship in a row. Also in the NJCAA, Cloud County beat Barton 30-21. On the women’s side, Life picked up a pair of wins, beating Brewton-Parker 49-1 and Limestone 37-9. Limestone also beat Brewton-Parker 38-6. Notables on the Docket: In Division I, three of the four teams in action are from PSAC, or the MAC East. Lock Haven heads to Appalachian State, while Edinboro faces Bloomsburg. In Division II, Emmanuel takes on Limestone, Nebraska-Kearney heads to Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri. Out in the Rockies, Western Colorado faces Adams State while New Mexico Highlands, which is in Las Vegas (New Mexico), faces Chadron State. Decent night of action coming up in Division III as some, but not all, of the matches of note see UW-La Crosse head to UW-Whitewater, Wartburg heads to Luther, Olivet is at Trine, Washington & Jefferson is at Thiel, Alma is at Adrian, Loras takes on Central and of course, I can’t resist the epic battle between the Student Princes of Heidelberg and the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern. In mixed division action, Fontbonne is at Lincoln and Central Methodist is at Westminster. FROM THE DWN: The Pioneer Press talks with Minnesota heavyweight Gable Steveson about his time away from the mat during his suspension during an investigation into allegations of sexual assault. No charges were filed and Steveson is the top-ranked heavyweight in the country. Pretty cool story out of West Virginia, well, kinda. Davis & Elkins head coach Jerry Boland spent a ton of time teaching and coaching in New Jersey. He’s got four wrestlers from Burlington County on the first-year team. Five Point Move profiles Alex Sancho prior to Thor Masters. A day late, but still relevant. The Daily Collegian, the student paper at Penn State, talks about Cael Sanderson and the Penn State take on the transfer portal. Due to an issue with Mailchimp on Wednesday morning, the Daily Wrestling News didn’t go out. So you may have already heard about the story from NBC Sports that notes Kyle Snyder is living in Cael Sanderson’s basement. For real. Cody Goodwin from The Des Moines Register is back with his weekly mailbag. No worries Cody, the NWMA awards have been paid for. You won’t have to lie to your parents anymore. Also from the Daily Collegian was the announcement that super senior Anthony Cassar’s college career is over. IAWrestle reported the former Penn State wrestler Brody Teske was transferring to Northern Iowa, while Austin Gomez of Iowa State is seeking a medical redshirt. There was also a pretty cool feature yesterday from Seth Duckworth at the Pistols Firing Blog about Adnan Alkaissy, also known as General Adnan from his pro wrestling days. Alkaissy is from Iraq, was an All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State, and knew Saddam Hussein. Crazy stuff. On The Network I made an appearance on Purdue’s Always Aggressive podcast, and while that isn’t on the network, whenever I do a guest spot on another show, it’ll show up in the feed. Cliff Fretwell from Compound released an episode of ThaHustle with North Carolina head coach Coleman Scott. That’s worth checking out. I’ve also got a new episode of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast with Associate Head Coach Daryl Thomas. You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. We’ve got electricians, we’ve got plumbing and we’ve got mouse ears! That’s right, the Short Time Wrestling Podcast is heading to Orlando. My wife and kids and I will head to Disney World. We’ll be hitting a few different places, spending time by the pool, sweating, having breakfast with Cinderella and everyt hing else that goes with it. My seven-year-old has been writing about this on the dry erase board for months, while my three-year-old would rather watch PJ Masks, which isn’t a Disney thing. This, however, is the Short Time Wrestling Podcast and I’m still working without a proper studio, so I’m still doing the solo show topic episode. Last time, we had a lot of great feedback with the pro wrestling topic. Before we get to all that - a quick hit on the Yianni-Zain thing. While I wasn’t at the NWCA Convention, I did get word there were some ideas being tossed around about the NWCA All-Star Classic and the future of that event. This prompted me to ask you what your favorite All-Star Classic match of all-time was. So before we get to those answers, let’s give you a little bit of backstory on the event. The East-West All-Star Classic first started in 1967 and was held after the season in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The event continued to be an East-West dual meet through 1987 when the team scoring component was taken out of the event. In 1973, the event moved to an in-season event, taking place in late January or early February until 2004. The NWCA opted to put the event in November to avoid matchups being dumped amidst concern for seed protection and coaches citing injury concerns so close to the postseason. The late November date went for eight seasons before the NWCA moved the event to the opening weekend of the college wrestling season in order to make it a kickoff weekend for college wrestling. The last two events have featured a large presence of women’s college wrestlers, which the NAIA has already created women’s wrestling as an invitational sport, while the NCAA is close to granting women’s wrestling emerging sports status. One of the most recent complaints coming from fans is that the event hasn’t been a real “All-Star” event because there are so few No. 1 vs. No. 2 wrestlers. Statistically, only one dual in recent memory (Penn State vs. Ohio State in 2017-18) featured as many All-Americans and top-ten wrestlers than the All-Star Classic typically does. Denver in 2018-19 was a notable exception as the card was split between men and women. This will be the 54th edition of the NWCA All-Star Classic. No, I do not yet know where the next edition will be, but before I get to your responses on your favorite All-Star Classic match of all-time, let’s go back to Stillwater, Oklahoma and then-Gallagher Arena, they didn’t add the Iba until later. Of the 11 weight classes – yes 11 – we had eight individual NCAA champions, and 21 of the 22 wrestlers were All-Americans. In addition to the eight champions, we had three runners-up, three thirds, two fourths, three fifth-place wrestlers and two sixth-place finishers. How many 1 vs. 2 rematches did we have? NONE! That’s right. But we did have a number of weights that shifted. At 115 pounds, third-place Glenn McMinn of Arizona State beat runner-up Jim Anderson of Minnesota 3-2. The two didn’t meet during the tournament, with McMinn falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Rick Sanders of Portland State. Sanders pinned McMinn in the quarters and then beat Anderson 19-2, in the pre-technical fall era, in the finals. 115-pound champion Rick Sanders went up to 123 pounds where he tied Michigan’s Bob Fehrs, the runner-up at 123, 2-2. Fehrs had just finished second a third straight year, losing to Lehigh’s Mike Caruso in the finals. That’s not second just a third year in a row. Fehrs lost to Caruso all three years in the finals. At 130 pounds, it was Caruso, the aforementioned champion at 123, who went up to defeat Colorado’s Jim Hanson 6-3. Hanson was fourth, having fallen to Michigan State’s Don Behm 9-5 in the semifinals. Hanson fell to Caruso’s teammate, Joe Peritore, 11-5 in the consolation final. So is that what you get? You lose to the 130-pounder, so they feed you the 123-pound champion? At 137, Don Behm, who finished second at 130, fell to Oklahoma State’s Gene Davis, who was third at 137 just a few weeks earlier. Davis fell in the semifinals 1-1, 0-0 in a referee’s decision to Portland State’s Masaru Yatabe. Yatabe would then lose to Michigan State’s Dale Anderson. At 145 pounds, Oklahoma State’s Jim Rogers finished fourth at the weight and got the nod against 137-pound All-American Don New of Cornell. New was fifth, having lost to Yatabe on the top side and Gene Davis in the consolation semis. Rogers lost in the opening round to Mike Gluck of Wisconsin, the eventual finalist. Back in those days, we had something that’s pretty much the repechage back then. Seriously. The only difference is there’s no double bronze back in 1967, which proves, yes, even us Americans had systems that were completely “meh” at times. Rogers would win this one 8-5. At 152 pounds, UCLA’s Lee Ehrler, who was third at 160 pounds, came down to defeat Michigan NCAA champion Jim Kamman 8-7. Ehrler was one of three wrestlers who came down to new weights in the event. Kamman defeated Oklahoma’s Wayne Wells 6-5 in the 1967 finals, while Ehrler was bested by Vic Marcucci of Iowa State 10-8 in the semifinals. Marcucci would beat Cleo McGlory of Oklahoma in the finals. At 160, Joe Domko of Southern Illinois, known then as SIU-Carbondale, knocked off Marcucci 3-2. Domko, a three-time qualifier, came into the 1967 NCAA tournament as the fifth seed. He was pinned in the opening round by Adams State’s Don Apodaca. Apodaca was then beaten by No. 4 seed Jeff Smith of Oregon State, eliminating Domko. Domko was the only non-All-American in the meet. At 167 pounds, George Radman of Michigan State, a Granby High School alum from Virginia, beat Washington State’s Fred Fairbanks in a matchup of wrestlers who met at their postseason weights. Radman won the national championship, beating Mike Gallego of Fresno State in the finals. Gallego, who was the College Division champion, put Fairbanks into the consolation bracket in the second round with a 7-1 decision. At 177 pounds, Northern Iowa’s Don Parker came down from 191 pounds and topped Moravian’s Dave Mucka 5-3. Porter was sixth, falling to Syracuse’s Tom Schlendorf in the quarterfinals. Well, coming “down” isn’t exactly accurate. Parker wrestled the University Division at 191 after winning the College Division earlier at 177 pounds, where Mucka was fourth. So while Parker went up and placed sixth, Mucka stayed at 177 for the University Division where he too would finish sixth. At 191 pounds, Syracuse national champion Tom Schlendorf beat Iowa State’s Don Buzzard in the NCAA finals 5-0. Schendorf would face off with 177-pound national champion and future world champion Fred Fozzard of Oklahoma State. Schlendorf would prevail 5-3 in the ONLY head-to-head matchup of NCAA champions. Fans waited with anticipation to talk about the results 14 days later when the results arrived via First Class Mail in Amateur Wrestling News. What if the message boards existed in that era? Man, the stories our predecessors would be able to tell us. At Unlimited, Dave Porter of Michigan got a little bit of redemption as he pinned NCAA champion and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Curley Culp of Arizona State at 3:38. Porter was the top seed in the NCAA tournament and the returning champion. Would-be messageboards would have melted down after he was upset 5-4 by NAIA champion Nick Carollo of Adams State in the quarterfinals. Porter fought back after Carollo made the finals. Culp dispatched with Carollo in the NCAA finals in just under a minute. So there’s your look back at the FIRST NWCA East-West All-Star Classic. Gary Pierson grew up in the Southeast corner of Colorado in the town of Lamar. Lamar isn't in the mountains, so Gary grew up doing the things that kids in that part of the state (along with neighboring Kansas and Oklahoma) do, like football. It wasn't until college, at Adams State in Alamosa, that he began participating in mountain sports like mountain biking and skiing, but he quickly fell in love with the freedom of those sports. His career in college administration took him to several college towns including the midwest, so when the opportunity to come back to Colorado at Western in Gunnison, he jumped at the chance and has been here ever since. He's fallen in love with not just the recreational opportunities, but also the town of Gunnison and the students of Western, that he helps on a daily basis. If there's one thing I've learned in these 37 (and counting!) podcast episodes, it's that Western Colorado University plays an integral role in life in the Gunnison valley. David Ribich joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after wrapping up his NCAA career at Western Oregon, where he won back-to-back NCAA Division II Outdoor 1,500 meter titles. He also helped his Western Oregon squad win back-to-back DMR titles during the NCAA Division II Indoor Championship. Ribich plans to turn professional by signing a contract in the coming weeks ahead of the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. How did he get here? How does a Division II kid blossom into someone who reached the 2017 U.S. 1,500m final and lined up next to Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz? Ribich tells his story. We delve into what it means to have that Division II label? How does he zone out the 'Beat the Division II kid!' chants during races? What did it mean to win an NCAA DMR title by .001 seconds? Is there a rivalry between Western Oregon and Adams State? What's the best piece of advice given to him by some of his influential coaches? Hey folks, it’s been a while. I’ve had a trip to Virginia, an appearance on a radio station that once fired me after five hours and of course, SNOW! But it’s a Tuesday night, the Bartz Brothers here in New Brighton have unveiled a new snow sculpture and I’m back to give you a rundown of the scores and more from January 16, 2018. This is Short Time Shots and I’m your host, Hall of Fame wrestling writer, broadcaster and announcer, Jason Bryant. Stellar Top 10 dual in Division III as unbeaten and fifth-ranked Loras -- the DUHAWKS! -- beat ninth-ranked Central College 25-12. Loras won six of the 10 bouts, but bonus points were the word of the day as four of the six wins picked up some extra sumpin’ sumpin’ -- even with an injury default at 133 where Michael Triplett was up 10-1 on All-American Cam Timok before Timok was forced to injury default. No, that’s not quite a nod to Lagunitas -- or is it Lagu-nit-as -- asking for a friend, right Richard Immel? North Central topped Wheaton 33-9 in a matchup of Top 25 teams. Wins were few and far between for the Thunder, who came in No. 25 in the most recent Division III rankings. Mount Union improved to 9-1 and picked up a second OAC win with a 39-9 win over Muskingum in Alliance, Ohio on Tuesday. Michael McIntire registered the quickest fall of the night for the Purple Raiders at 1:18 at 157 pounds. Greensboro comes off the Virginia Duals and picks up a 28-24 win over Southern Virginia. Time for your semi-irregular Student Princes update. Yes, the Student Princes of Heidelberg evened its record at 6-6 with a 23-12 win over Otterbein, that action taking place in the OAC. In Division II, Pitt-Johnstown got a technical fall from heavyweight D.J. Sims lifted the Mountain Cats past Seton Hill 21-17. UPJ also picked up a crucial win at 165 pounds as Devin Austin earned a 5-4 win over Zach Voytek. Cody Law’s fall at 157 wasn’t totally unexpected, but the bonus points were needed down the stretch. Mixing up some divisions, which is what we’re about to do, we saw Drury University of Missouri pick up its first dual meet win of the season. The Panthers topped Arkansas’ University of the Ozarks, a Division III school headed up by former Junior world teamer LeRoy Gardner. We had him on The Ice Hour last year -- he’s got a story about Uzbekistan, but doesn’t everybody? Extra credit: coach James Reynolds wrestled at Adams State. Speaking of Panthers! Up in Michigan, bumping away from Kyle Nixon was a bad idea! What happened up in the mitten, well Davenport University won three of the last four matches to move past Division III Alma College 24-21. In case you’re wondering where the heck Davenport is -- it’s in the home of Bloodround -- Grand Rapids, Michigan and they’re reclassifying from the NAIA to Division II. And yes, they are the Panthers, too. By the way, the aforementioned Mr. Nixon DOES have a podcast. Gold star when you find it. In the NAIA, Grand View won again -- and this just in, snow … is cold. The Vikings won for the 62nd time in a row and the 91st time in the last 92 duals. Lyon and Hannibal-LaGrange were canceled due to inclement weather -- the real reason according to Julia Salata is because Southerners are soft. No tickets if you keep that up, pal! Barton Community College swept three duals at the Barton Duals. The Cougars -- GO COUGARS -- beat Colby 55-0, Cowley 42-6 and Northwest Kansas Tech 28-13. No report on the other scores, since most junior colleges don’t really update their athletic websites the night of a road dual in the middle of Kansas. Just how it is. We have a special treat for you today. Hall of Fame coach Joe Vigil joins us to talk training. If you enjoy the show we would appreciate you heading over to iTunes and taking a minute to rate and review our podcast. Those ratings are important when people are searching for podcast. Coach Vigil won 26 national titles in 33 years at Adams State and has coached several Olympians including Deena Kastor and Brenda Martinez. We discuss everything from VO2 Max and testing, what he learned from watching runners at Leadville to periodization. Tell us how you got started in the running community and into coaching. When you took over Adams State you won 26 national titles in 33 years. Adams state when you took over was not exactly a powerhouse so you had to build runners from the ground up. What do you think you were doing differently that other programs were not doing? Thirst for learning what made you different? In the book Born to Run you make an appearance. You are mentioned as a coach who thinks differently because you were showing up at 100-mile races to learn from ultra runners when other coaches were not. So what exactly did you learn from watching the athletes at the Leadville 100? You mentioned running happy, is that something you can teach or is it something you have or not? One thing you talk about is testing. Having a PhD. in exercise physiology, I know that testing is big for you. Many of our listeners are your are group runners you will see on the weekend in a local 5 or 10k. And we also have a lot of high school coaches. So for them, testing of VO2 or max lactate may not be something they can easily do. What recommendations would you have for them as far as testing and what they should get tested? VO2 Max… You do the field test and find out what it is, where should they go from there to improve? I have read that you said that our runners don’t run hard enough and long enough. Other coaches I have talked to said the problem with American runners is we run too hard. So what is your current position on this? In 2001 yourself and Bob Larsen brought Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi to Mammoth Lakes to start the Mammoth Track Club, which was one of the most influential post-collegiate clubs in the country. How did that come about with Larsen? These clubs are a lot more popular now with many new ones popping up and having success. What do you think the future of these clubs are and how have they changed over the last 15 years. You have had Olympians such as Deena and Meb, and this year you had more mid-distance runners like Brenda and Borris in the Olympics. Obviously, the training for the marathon and 800/1500 are completely different. What is the greatest coaching challenge in working with athletes in such different disciplines? What about strength work, what type of strength work did you do with your kids at Adam's State and how would it differs from what you do with a marathon runner? Question from a listener: In your book, you have graphs in the marathon training section for weekly mileage. Your mileage chart looks very much like a roller coaster fluctuating from 60 to 80 to 70 to 100 to 80 to 120… Many training plans are much more steady in their mileage, do you still method or has it changed since you last published the book? You have been around the running scene for several decades now. When it comes to training and performance, what is something that you think has changed your coaching style the most in the last decade? Work harder, what does a week look like for a 5k runner Book road to the top is hard to find, but I understand they can still be had through you, can you tell our listeners how to get a copy of one. Running Summit Dec 17-18th in Dallas. Can you tell us about the event and What topics will you be discussing? Tapering is one of the questions I get asked most about. When you were coaching at Adams state, did you find any differences in tapering with your male and female teams? What advice would you have on tapering for our 5k listeners out there? At the end of the last season, I asked the kids on my team what their favorite workout of the season is. And the majority of them said their favorite was the acceleration workout from 100 to 200.
