Take heed! Friend to all and perspicacious sage of the jam band scene, Vince Herman advises: NEVER on a Sunday. Andy and Chad Cocuzza (of Spoonfed Tribe) talk about their friendship honeymoon whilst vacationing in Italy. Did Andy achieve the respite they so desperately needed? Did him and the honeymoon boys find love? And what of that one girl, known only as TROUBLE from a few years back... But then, on the Interview Hour, we got guitarist/songwriter and sometimes actor Mark Wystrach, of one of the biggest and baddest bands to come out of Texas: Midland! Mark calls from a beautiful Bay Area redwood sabbatical in Mill Valley while he gets his head together. Andy and Nick learn what it takes to be a MAN. Inquire within for lessons on masculinity... This luminary of American roots music discusses his years on the road with Leftover Salmon, Great American Taxi, and The High Hawks.
Send us a Text Message. The River Arkansas initially formed when frontman Mike Clark (guitar, banjo, and singer-songwriter) and Macon Terry (bass) met as members of other bands in 2014, and realized soon after that they both lived in Colorado Springs. Clark and Terry ended up performing in the studio together and releasing the band's debut album, Golden Light.Terry then brought players from his own band Clouds and Mountains, Robin Chestnut (drums) and Rachel Sliker (violin), and toured the West Coast for a month before releasing the second River Arkansas album, You Animal. They've since released a third album, Any Kind of Weather, and three EPs, “Damn Good Dog,” “Waiting on the Rain,” and “Green Bridge”.Before Clark became a musician, he started as a semi-professional trials bike rider, taking his first big road trip across the West Coast at the age of 27 with a friend of his to ride their bikes and meet other riders to compete with. Clark's friend, Patrick, would play his guitar many times throughout the trip (Clark didn't know he had a guitar before this trip), and Patrick's playing inspired Clark enough that he bought a harmonica during a stop at a Seattle music shop. He practiced during the rest of the trip, and that was his first venture into music.Jack Cloonan's grandfather and father played accordion, and his father also played tenor banjo. Cloonan started playing accordion at seven years old and violin at nine, focusing on traditional Irish jigs. Around the age of fourteen, he picked up a guitar and started playing more contemporary rock tunes, such as those by Led Zeppelin. He picked up a mandolin for the first time during high school, and eventually, he found bands such as Leftover Salmon and String Cheese Incident, who took Irish tunes and fused them with American stylings. At around nineteen, he started writing his own songs, with some of his guitar influences including Doc Watson, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, and Jake Workman.Cloonan has also been able to spend time with banjo influence Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon, as well as perform many times with Silas Herman, son of Vince Herman, founding member of the iconic band. Silas Herman, while also performing many times with his dad, has performed in dozens of music festivals and has shared the stage and recorded with groups and individuals such as Drunken Hearts, Terrapin Family Band with Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, and The Kitchen Dwellers (just within the last couple of months). Leftover Salmon is a fusion of many different genres that has a cult-like following. Scott Watson talks with founder Vince Herman on Hearing Voices.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 277: Few pickers have toured harder or traveled farther than jamgrass veteran Vince Herman, who co-founded the iconic Leftover Salmon 34 years ago in Colorado. Yet there are always new things to try, so he's added the band The High Hawks to his list of collaborations. Our sit-down visit was sparked by that band's album Mother Nature's Show doing so well on the Americana chart and by his own recent move from Colorado to Nashville, where he's become a hub of the picking scene and an avid co-writer. We cover a lot of ground from his origins in Pittsburgh and West Virginia to the everlasting desire to play the next show. Also in the hour, progressive banjo player Kyle Tuttle calls in from a fishing trip to talk about his years with Molly Tuttle and his new solo album Labor Of Lust.
We are kicking off this season properly by interviewing Mr Festival himself, Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon and the High Hawks. He shows us the true resilience required to be a touring musician that remains as occupied as he is. Nate and Justin get the dish on how for 35 years he has helped maintain progressive bluegrass with his influential bands. With Vince we are all in good hands. A few festival news highlights and announcements are also discussed as we look forward to celebrating the 10th year of the Blue Ox Music Festival this June 27-29 in Eau Claire, WI. While sitting through COVID lockdowns Chris Castino of Minnesota-based rock'n'roll jam band The Big Wu teamed up with Milwaukee-based bluegrass band Chicken Wire Empire to reimagine some of his catalog into impeccably fitting bluegrass tunes. These songs were transformed and resulted in their collaborative album Fresh Pickles. Fresh Pickles is just the beginning of a heartfelt and fulfilling voyage into bluegrass— it features stomping rippers and sweet, harmonic ballads, as well as a taste of genre-shifting psychedelic rides. Always true to the tradition and authentic in presentation, this collaboration is packed with great pickin' excitement and most importantly joy. Fresh Pickels is a triumphant musical collaboration that was pulled right out of the ground by its Midwestern roots, from traditional folk to blends of contemporary bluegrass and jammy deliciousness. The joyous album-making process produced many special guest appearances from several GRAMMY-winning artists in the bluegrass and Americana world including Sam Bush, Peter Rowan, Tim O'Brien, Jerry Douglas, Andy Hall, Vince Herman, Nick Forster, Keller Williams, and Adam Greuel. With the help of many of Chris's lifelong musical heroes, the record has that classic 70's and 80's alt-bluegrass sound, while never too far from the traditional bluegrass style that defines the genre. This episode features recordings from Chris Castino & Chicken Wire Empire's July 2022 performance under the tent and serves as a special experience for audiences of bluegrass purists and all lovers of great tunes. For his 99th birth anniversary, WNCW honored the late great Earl Scruggs by sharing portions of interviews with artists who knew him, broadcasting stories ranging from brief encounters in young adulthood, like Sierra Hull's memories of Earl, on to years of friendship and collaboration with guests like John McEuen and Pete Wernick (note: Sierra Hull will also be our featured guest in her upcoming episode). These conversations were rich and deep, and helped me understand Earl Scruggs as the man in ways that were at turns surprising, but always inspiring. I asked everyone here essentially the same two questions: tell us your favorite memories or stories about Earl, and talk about his impact as an artist and how that legacy continues since he has been gone. It all adds up to three and a half hours of audio (!), and it should be no surprise that there is a ton of gold to be mined in all those conversations; here is a synopsis, a sampling of everyone's thoughts, insights and memories. This episode hones in on the stories that reveal Earl Scruggs as a humble genius, a quiet and kind man who was in so many ways the same farm boy and mill worker from the foothills of western North Carolina even after living in a mansion in the heart of Nashville. Plus, there is plenty of talk about the genius and enduring legacy of Earl Scruggs, whose namesake lives on in the form of not only his vast catalog of recordings, his songwriting and revolutionary playing style, but also in the Earl Scruggs Center in his home county, housed in the county courthouse built in 1907 in downtown Shelby NC, as well as the Earl Scruggs Music Festival, which began in 2022 and continues on Labor Day weekend in 2023 in nearby Tryon NC. Earl Scruggs In this episode we welcome Kristin Scott Benson, Travis Book, Alison Brown, Sam Bush, Jeff Hanna, Vince Herman, John McEuen, Jim Mills, Earl's nephew J.T. Scruggs, Pete Wernick, and even my dad, who gives us a glimpse of what a Scruggs family gathering was like in the 1950s. In the summer of 2021 I was joined on the Happy Hour by the legend Vince Herman. His band Leftover Salmon was one of the first bands I obsessed over, burning bootlegs from my friends library and following them all over Colorado. Vince was always the life of the party, and still is; the night before we taped this episode we stayed up late in my mom's kitchen drinking mescal and playing music. One of my biggest influences and favorite people, I was honored he agreed to join Lyndsay Pruett and I for the show. We are extremely excited to have Vince Herman as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Things are just more fun when Vince Herman is around, and since helping co-found Leftover Salmon over a quarter century ago, Leftover Salmon shows have always been the most fun. Herman moved to Boulder, CO from Morgantown, West Virginia, where he was attending West Virginia University, in 1985. On his first night in town, he met his future bandmate Drew Emmitt at a show for Emmitt's group at the time, the Left Hand String Band. The two struck up an immediate friendship. For a short time after moving to Boulder, Herman joined The Left Hand String Band, marking the first time the two would play together in a band. Herman soon left The Left Hand String Band to pursue his own musical vision. He formed the Salmon Heads, a Cajun-jug band that tried to wrangle all of Herman's disparate musical influences, Cajun, Calypso, Ska, and bluegrass into a coherent musical statement. His vision was fully realized on New Year's Eve 1989 when the Salmon Heads and The Left Hand String Band united forces for a show.We catch up with Vince to talk about dealing with coming out the other side of quarantine, creating the New High Hawks album, what it means to be a psychedelic chef, finding others that share your passions, making a new solo album, why Charlie Daniels was a hippie, and so much more! For more on Leftover Salmon head over to: www.leftoversalmon.comCheck out The High Hawks at: www.lohirecords.com/artist/the-high-hawksSONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE: 'Talk About That' off The High Hawks self-titled album 'The High Hawks'SONG AT THE END OF THE EPISODE: 'Brand New Good Old Days' off Leftover Salmon's album 'Brand New Good Old Days'Please do us a solid and leave us a 5 star review on Apple PodcastsCheck out the No Simple Road YouTube channel and subscribe!Become a Patron of No Simple Road On Patreon.comFREE SHIPPING FROM Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:ANDREW HENDRYXOUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. We are super stoked to have Chad Staehly from The High Hawks as our guest on No Simple Road this week! In mythology, the hawk is often associated with intuition, healing, spiritual awareness, unification. They seem to appear when you need them most, evoking a feeling of clarity, focus, or maybe courage. The six members of this outfit met on the road touring across America, admiring one another as musicians and characters. When they finally came together in Vince Herman's living room in the Colorado high country, it wasn't apparent what kind of music would be made. What ended up happening was six friends transfiguring into The High Hawks, born of deep respect for one another, a musical openness and curiosity, and a love of those musicians and characters that flew before them!We talk with Chad about winging it into playing their first show, what it was like creating the new self-titled album, saying what needs to be said with your music with love, what comes from an energetic connection with your brothers while playing, the love of the Grateful Dead, and a whole bunch more!Make sure to check out more with The High HawksSONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE: 'Singing A Mountain Song' off the album 'The High Hawks'SONG AT THE END OF THE EPISODE: 'Blue Earth' off the album 'The High Hawks'20% off with Melophy PROMO CODE: NSRFREE SHIPPING FROM Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20 For 10% off Electric Fish Lights PROMO CODE: NSR INTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:ESCAPEROUTRO MUSIC BY AND USED WITH OUR GRATITUDE AND THE PERMISSION OF:CHILLDREN OF INDIGONo Simple Road is part of OSIRIS MEDIA. Andy Thorn has been the banjo player for the Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass Jam Band, Leftover Salmon, for over 10 years. However, he has been preparing nearly his entire life, as he has both loved and dedicated himself to music since he was very young. His positive attitude, eclectic musical background, and vast banjo knowledge has allowed Andy to play in bands with current members of Greensky Bluegrass, Mandolin Orange, The Infamous Stringdusters, Che Apalache and the Jon Stickley Trio, to name a few. Recently Andy put out an EP with his former LOS pianist/keyboardist Erik Deutsch. Deutsch & Thorn's "Tangled Sea," successfully marries the banjo and the piano, and highlights Andy Thorns ability to play banjo in ever changing settings and styles. The album is available at andythornmusic.com, along with other merch, and updates on his music and live performances, so please check it out. Also, please join me as we take a deep dive into Andy's early years, and his serendipitous path to ending up in a band, which he was also a huge fan of growing up. Turner and Seth first explain how this episode came together mostly by accident. They chat with Tim Newby, author of Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years Of Festival. Newby shares an early life story from each of the band's founding members: Drew Emmitt, Vince Herman and Mark Vann. Newby also offers his opinion on two myths that have become legendary in Salmon circles. Fans of Phish and String Cheese Incident will be interested to learn how Salmon’s early career intersected with those groups. We learn the beginnings of a musician’s prank called "Songbombing" discussed with Mimi Naja in Episode 63). Newby also tells us how different drummers came to define each era of the band and shares a passage from his book about the importance of finding Andy Thorn after the passing of Mark Vann. Next we go to the "Tasting Room" at Atlanta’s City Winery and hear long-time friends Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman speak of Tim's book, their evolving relationship with Phil Lesh, their current "living room-style" tour and more. The episode contains two exclusive duo performances from Emmitt and Herman, and a full-band live take on the Drew Emmitt's song “Astral Traveler," written in tribute to this program's Godfather, Col. Bruce Hampton - this version performed in The Colonel's adopted home town of Atlanta. A gorgeous studio version of the song appears on the Steve Berlin-produced Something Higher CD. The latest episode of 'The JamBase Podcast' starts with "The Rundown" and continues with "Reelin' In The Years" featuring Vince Herman and Nicki Bluhm providing "Tour Stories."
Seth and Rob sit down with Mimi Naja of Fruition at the Electric Forest Festival in Michigan and initially talk about what it's like to be playing traditional instruments at a primarily electronic music festival. Mimi ends up explaining the thinking behind the band's decision to bring into the studio the rock feel of their live shows and their decision to go with producer Tucker Martine. Martine taught the band many things, helped them add layers to their sound and he is the chief reason that Mimi decided to play some baritone guitar on the record. The result is by far their greatest record to day, "Watching It All Fall Apart." The trio also discuss how the band's breakup songs contain elements of hope and accountability. We hear a bit about Mimi's days as a Georgia youth and explains her decision to leave Georgia and go to school in Portland. She would leave school and then clicking with a group of musicians while playing Marley and Sublime tunes. These folks would end up becoming Fruition. We learn about the band's the early days, and some of the antics that went on as the band grew (like "song-bombing" Vince Herman). She also talks about how she used to leave pronouns out of her songwriting because of all of the homophobia in the world, but that she has more recently eschewed this approach and been forthcoming with her sexuality. Mimi also explains specific reasons why Atlanta-based musician Janelle Monelle is an inspiration to her, and the fluid nature of sexuality in the music world. Speaking of inspirations, the discussion most certainly gets to stories about Greensky Bluegrass, Elephant Revival, The Infamous Stringdusters and other of Fruition's "Crazy Uncles and Aunts." She also expresses love for her own band's fans, which she calls the "Fruit'y Freaks." Seth and Rob then wrap up the show catching up the listeners on show news during one of the few times they were together last month. Speaking from a coffee shop in Black Mountain, NC they also discuss North Carolina in general, and specifically their day together there. The show ends with more Fruition music including Mimi and band mates Jay Cobb Anderson and Kellen Asebroek sitting in with Railroad Earth and performing Fruition's "Mountain Annie" at the idyllic Red Rocks. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. Off the top of the show, you’ll hear Evermore off of Leftover Salmon’s latest release “Something Higher”. We wanted to highlight this track, specifically, because while listening to the record in the car with my daughters, I pointed out Eric Deutch’s tremendous piano playing. Real honest playing, without any digitization. Just authentic, emotional playing. With pop culture being so inundated with plastic garbage, its so refreshing to hear this kind of music, something that the guys in Leftover Salmon have been doing for 28 years. We caught up with Vince Herman, one of the grizzled veterans of the now 6 piece band, to get a glimpse into the making of “something higher”, Leftover’s place amongst their peers and much more.Show Notes: **First Song:** 00:45 – Evermore **Interview Begins:** 07:04 **Extro Song:** 34:58 – House of Cards See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Year's Eve 2017
Seth and Rob start the show by hinting at exciting podcast developments which they discuss in more depth during the post-interview portion of the episode. The duo sat down with with founding member and frontman of Leftover Salmon Vince Herman in honor of the much anticipated Leftover Salmon’s acoustic fall tour and their chat provides the bulk of this episode. The cozy confines of the Hunt House in Marietta, Georgia provide an ideal setting as Herman talks about how his eclectic musical taste grew out of his teenage experiences at the weeks-long multiple genre annual musician-interactive-heavy Augusta Heritage Festival in Elkins, West Virginia. Herman ultimately moved from a chilly West Virginia attic to the acoustic music promised land of Colorado and he came across a notice for a Left-Hand String Band show literally upon arrival. Left-Hand String Band and Herman’s eventual own band Salmon Heads would eventually give birth to Leftover Salmon. Vince talks about mandolin-toting football moves with David Grisman, the mythology of Peter Rowan, how having Jeff Sipe and Billy Payne in tow impacted LoS, how Waylon Jennings always hated country music and he even tells a harrowing David Allen Coe story. We learn how Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and David Bromberg were the main inspirations for the initial Leftover Salmon ethos, and how they, with John Bell recorded (in one take) a song Bromberg had taught Vince. We learn about the similarities between founding member Mark Vann and the banjo player who replaced him Andy Thorn and what LoS did the time Neil Young wandered onto their stage. A discussion about the tour with his son Silas which brought him to Hunt House ensues and we find out that this “Herman Original” was initially pretty much compelled by friends to pursue music, and how Georgia music-lovers had been impressed by him. Herman also discusses how Ralph Roddenbery specifically, and the Metro Atlanta music scene in general provided many highlights of his tour with his son. This podcast also once again offers the genesis of yet another eventual JamCruise activity, “Chemical Experiments with Mr. Wizard,” and Herman gives some hints toward the true significance of Mayor McCheese. Then a discussion about parallel universes serves as an ideal prelude to an, at times heavy discussion about Col. Bruce Hampton and his final performance. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. Seth and Rob talk about Leftover Salmon’s stripped-down tour this autumn, during part one of two in an Inside Out wTnS series on the band. Drew Emmitt elaborated on a variety of topics backstage at the Hampton 70 event earlier this year at the Fox Theatre, during which he correctly predicts the overwhelming nature of the night that lay before him and an all-star cast. Emmitt talks about meeting the Col. and touring with the Aquarium Rescue Unit, how Vince Herman can sometimes “turn into Bruce for a while” and how the COl. taught Leftover Salmon to toss away preconceived notions and play from their soul, instead of their mind. Drew also discusses a more creative touring schedule in 2018, how Salmon evolved while touring with Bill Payne and Jeff Sipe, and recording in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, Earl Scruggs and John Bell. Fans of Hot Tuna, Neil Young and Phish will enjoy his stories of collaborations with each artist. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. GREAT AMERICAN TAXI has become one of the best-known headliners on the jam band circuit.
