Edmonton's Eamon McGrath has been making a name for himself since releasing his debut Wild Dogs in 2008. Ever since then, McGrath has been a non-stop touring machine playing both stripped-down folky solo shows and upbeat punky rock with his band. His 11th record Bells of Hope was released earlier this year. And when he is not recording music, he has also published two books. He is just coming off a tour of Japan and will no doubt be back on the road delivering a hearty blend of Springsteen & Neil Young folk and rock to fans in 2023. A perfect guy to speak passionately of his affinity for Black Love by the Afghan Whigs.

Weird in Highschool with Bretton Lee John

Edmonton born Eamon McGrath is a founding member of the band July Talk and has had his hands in just about every corner of Canadian alternative rock. Eamon's journey has taken him from legion halls to slinging the six string for Daniel Johnston. A fantastic performer, songwriter and sonic sound shaper in his own right, Eamon can be found playing just about anywhere they'll have him and is more than likely to be playing near you in the not so distant future. In the Graventown studio today, I had the chance to talk with a high energy pal and hip-hop performer and actor who I met in the middle of a prairie field in Manitoba in 2016; Bubba B the MC. We will definitely need a part 2 because we could have talked for hours. Bubba wears many hats and performs musically under the name Bubba B the MC and always offers a positive rhyme-based message and has performed at various Boys and Girls Clubs and schools across Canada to affect positive change within younger generations.  His radical energy also got him a spot on CBC's Dragon's Den in 2015. Bubba is also an actor who goes by the name Adrian McLean and is in a new show on CBC Gem called "The Porter" (which is the first Afro-Caribbean written, directed and leading-acted show in Canadian history) and he also had a role in one of the biggest #1 films of 2021 called "Nobody" (starring Bob Odenkirk and Christopher Lloyd). Welcome back to the Graventown tree, acorns! Today on the show I was lucky and grateful to speak with Caroline Marie Brooks. Caroline Marie Brooks is a musical  storyteller, and her new record "Everything at the Same Time" (produced by Jim Bryson) is the first solo outing from ⅓ of the Canadian harmony trio Good Lovelies. Brooks walks the listener through a wall of stories, taking moments from her life down and carefully recounting the feeling of the sun and the wind in the trees from days past and present.  Over 11 tracks, Brooks leads a vivid journey through feelings familiar to our hearts. Gentle guitar work laying a backdrop for Brooks' sweetly divine vocals, densely layered with wurlitzers and mandolins and steel guitars to evoke feelings of memories both lost and found. Lead single “Vitamin” evokes a sun-drenched nostalgia, albeit a nostalgia happening right in front of you, one that you can live in and hold onto. Even at the end of the record, with a cover of Roger Miller's classic “Oo-De-Lally” (from Disney's Robin Hood), Caroline Marie Brooks has crafted an album that feels wholly familiar and distinctly her own - an instant classic waiting to be discovered and have its stories told.  Catch up with Caroline and her upcoming tour dates on her website. It was a lovely conversation about music, life on the road, parenting and much more. And hey O-towners  - Catch me live with the full band at the Dominion Tavern this Saturday March 26 with the mega-talented Eamon McGrath and at Rachel's driveway in late May to kickoff yard-show season! Fun to be back in the Graventown Podcast command centre - and I was lucky enough to catch up with a singer songwriter who is literally always on the international road; Eamon McGrath. Eamon McGrath is a Canadian musician and writer from Edmonton, Alberta and is currently based in Toronto, Ontario. On his own, his raw live performances are most often folk-oriented, where McGrath plays songs from his deep catalogue on acoustic instruments, but with a band the live show takes on a much more high-energy, punk rock influenced vein. Having just seen him open for his pals July Talk a few weeks back, Eamon was very open and candid with me about some hard times he's been through recently and we got very deep about songwriting. Have a listen and do your best to stay kind at all times.
