Ball Foundation's Global Impact and the $2M Boys & Girls Club Partnership   Alex Fordham interviews Jessica Leary, Executive Director of the Ball Foundation –  Ball Corporation's philanthropic arm – about its mission and recent work.  Leary, a 15-year Ball veteran who moved from environmental health and safety into social impact, says the foundation focuses on recycling, manufacturing education, and disaster response, supporting more than 15 partners globally and responding to disasters within 50 miles of Ball facilities (including U.S. hurricanes and South American mudslides).  She highlights nearly $2 million invested over five years in Boys & Girls Clubs of America, including the Ultimate Journeys program, to spark hands-on STEM and skilled-trades interest—ideally by middle school (around age 13)—through employee engagement and facility exposure.  She notes partners still want both manufacturing and recycling education when infrastructure exists, and the foundation is planning strategy through 2030, while expanding collaborative partnerships to address workforce gaps as industry evolves.    Timestamps 00:00 Welcome and Introductions00:21 Meet Jessica Leary00:28 Ball Foundation Mission00:58 Jessica Career Journey01:29 Recent Projects Overview02:36 Boys and Girls Club Partnership03:13 Building the STEM Pipeline04:30 Reaching Kids Early06:32 Future of the Partnership08:38 Disaster Relief and Recycling Work10:51 Impact Stories and Motivation11:46 Strategy to 203013:03 How Anyone Can Help14:49 Power of Collaboration15:32 Sustainability Education for Youth17:39 Closing Thoughts on Workforce Needs19:15 Final Thanks and Wrap Up

Welcome back to the NoCo Pulse as we kick off the second week of May following a surprise snow day that had Northern Colorado kids out of school and riding bikes by afternoon. This week we're covering community news, business updates, and local highlights while celebrating the resilience and energy that makes NoCo special. What's moving features Miles Beyond Running Community and their upcoming Weld Your Metal Running Festival on May 30th and 31st in Eaton. This 146 acre private property event offers distances from a 7K run walk up to 100 miles, plus a 36 hour total mileage contest, complete with camping, glamping, sauna, cold plunge, massage, and mountain views. We also share an update on Mandy Mullen's attempt at the Cocodona 250 in Arizona. While she didn't finish, making it past the 155 mile mark before missing the time cutoff is an incredible achievement worth celebrating. Kudos to Don't Ember Productions for traveling with her to document the journey. On a sadder note, Saffron Scoops and Bites, the Indian restaurant and ice cream shop, has permanently closed but shared plans to return bigger and better than ever. Community gatherings spotlight Ginger and Baker's Murder Mystery Party coming up May 19th, with only about a dozen tickets remaining for the Baker's Half Dozen event. Fork Fun celebrates 25 years this summer, operating two mini golf courses, go kart track, laser tag, arcade, bumper boats, and restaurant while gifting millions of dollars of free usage to nonprofit children's causes like Boys and Girls Clubs, Matthews House, and Respite Care over the years. Friday Fest returns to downtown Greeley June 5th through August 7th, kicking off with the blues jam and featuring the go cup program where you can carry open alcohol from participating restaurants into 9th Street Plaza during events. Keeping the beat highlights the Loud Frame Film Festival coming to the Lyric May 22nd through 24th, an international film festival created by the same mind behind EDIY Horror Film Fest. They're seeking volunteers and vendors for the event. Thursday Night Live Concert Series returns May 28th for 16 consecutive weeks at Old Town Square, starting with The Burrows and their nine piece lineup at 7 PM, perfect for families and kids ready to dance. Community support features Stay: A Night of Metal and Hope, a metal concert at The Sound Bar on May 17th benefiting the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Larimer County. We share an inspiring story of Shana from a local cleaning company who moved to NoCo two years ago from Columbus, Ohio with her daughter in her car on gas cards. After her car broke down, a daily rental owner gifted her a vehicle for $250 with new tires and fresh oil, House of Neighborly Services helped with housing, and she's now thriving with stable housing, a $4 raise, and representing her cleaning agency at networking groups across Fort Collins. Business news celebrates Andrew Johnson with Business Networking Done Right, a former BNI director who started his own brand and has grown to four chapters with 20 members each. He's hosting a lunch and learn workshop May 20th through the Loveland Chamber on Building Stronger Referral Relationships, open to anyone for $30 including lunch. Shout out to Dixie Daly, who's everywhere in the community from creating pink coffee with Top of the Light Coffee to being named grand marshal for the upcoming Larimer County parade. She's also running for some kind of entrepreneur of impact recognition worth voting for. Food picks feature The Taco Stop, nationally recognized by USA Today, serving incredible tacos al carbon so full you can barely pick them up, led by classically trained chef Caesar from Mexico City. Yellow Crunch Colombian Restaurant opened their massive new location at The Exchange in the former Crooked Stave space, featuring giant murals by artists flown in from Colombia and a 12 by 20 foot television screen in a beautiful 3500 square foot space. Important announcement: The LoCo PULSE is officially becoming the NoCo PULSE in the coming weeks and getting its own RSS feed, making it easier for listeners who love the weekly community news format to find and follow along. Shout out to Laughing Buck Farm for being weekly listeners and sharing the podcast with their entire newsletter. They offer markets, vegetable swaps, and kids summer camps including homesteader camp and horse camp, plus a nonprofit supporting gardening and vegetables for people in our community. Stay connected, NoCo.

Feeling happy? That could be because spring has finally sprung here in the Midwest.  Or, more specifically, it could be because you're part of the Keen Wealth audience right here in Overland Park! A recent report by WalletHub ranked the 182 "Happiest Cities in America." The researchers evaluated 29 "key indicators of happiness, including depression rates, income growth, and average daily leisure time." Fremont, California topped the list, and half of the top ten were cities in sunny California and Arizona. But the Midwest had a strong showing, too. Bismarck and Fargo, North Dakota both made the top five. And coming in at number six was ... Overland Park, Kansas!  While it's certainly gratifying to see well-deserved recognition for our city, I've always felt grateful to be living and working here. Yes, the reasonable cost of living, centrality for travel to other parts of the country, and variety of outdoor activities are all wonderful. But the sense of community here is really special. My team at Keen Wealth experienced that firsthand recently when the Keen Wealth Foundation and Charitable Impact Committee, led by my wife Carissa, had the honor of serving as the entertainment sponsor for "Kids Night Out," a massive gala that raised $3.5 million for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. Taking care of each other, in our communities and in our homes, is one of the most direct ways that a financial plan can boost your spirits. On today's show, we answer questions from two listeners who are thinking about how different generations of Americans can help each other enjoy more security and happiness in retirement.

“Stop fighting with the kids and start fighting for the kids.”That single sentence from a mentor redirected Robbie Slocumb's life decades ago. Today, as the CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Georgia, it serves as the north star for his leadership. In this episode of The Uncommon Leader Podcast, host John Gallagher sits down with Robbie to discuss his 30-year journey of youth advocacy and the mechanics of Generational Leadership.Robbie has proven that the most valuable commodity a leader possesses isn't a budget—it's time. We explore how he scaled a $300k local operation into a $3.3M regional powerhouse by prioritizing trust-based partnerships and a "River Mentality" of pouring knowledge back into his team.In This Episode, We Discuss:The Advocacy Mindset: Shifting from "fighting with" to "fighting for" your team, your community, and the next generation.Mentorship in the Digital Age: Why technology raises the stakes for presence, and why real relationships can never be replaced by AI or a screen. The 10X Growth Roadmap: How Robbie used strategic partnerships and radical trust to fuel a decade of scaling.Succession & Failure: Why true leaders must give their team the "right to fail" to help them grow and eventually outlast their tenure. The "Billboard" Message: Robbie's simple, two-word philosophy for a successful life and career.Key Takeaways for Leaders:Mentorship is about listening well and asking better questions. It's the art of talking with people instead of at them.Slow Down to Speed Up: Why you must bring people with you and give them real opportunities to lead. The Alan Story: A powerful moment involving a broken microphone, 500 people, and a "Youth of the Year" who found his voice—proving that consistent investment changes lives.Time vs. Money: A challenge to those wondering if their presence matters more than their checkbook.Legacy Defined: How faith, family, and a love for others create a foundation that keeps leaders grounded.

359: Why Your Board Is Checked Out (and What Actually Re-Engages Them) (Katie Spencer)SUMMARYWhen nonprofit leaders say their board is disengaged, Katie Spencer argues the real issue is usually clarity, not commitment. Executives want board members to show up, follow through, and be proactive. But many board members are thinking, “I don't know what my job is,” where the lines are, or how to be helpful, so disengagement becomes the predictable outcome. Katie explains why more emails and more asks don't solve the problem in today's noisy, overloaded environment. Instead, she recommends an intentional reset: get explicit about what the board's role is right now (and revisit it annually), co-create the board's work plan for the next 12 to 24 months, and put an accountability system in place so the board holds itself to its commitments. She also stresses early engagement, giving new board members a meaningful quick win within the first 30 days, then another within the first 90. Finally, Katie reframes fundraising expectations so board members can contribute without feeling like professional fundraisers. She shares simple, confidence-building steps, introductions, thank-you calls, and short activation moments built directly into board meetings, so board service becomes real leadership, not passive listening.ABOUT KATIEKatie Spencer is the Founder of Zipline Consulting, where she helps nonprofit boards and executive teams strengthen governance, clarify roles, and build more effective partnerships. She brings 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including national work with Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and more than a decade as a consultant supporting organizations across the country. With training in cultural anthropology, Katie brings a systems lens to board dynamics, spotting patterns, naming disconnects, and helping leaders create practical structures for accountability. Her work frequently includes board retreats, strategic planning, and facilitation that turns board service into real leadership.RESOURCESZipline ConsultingKatie Spencer on LinkedInAsk Like a Leader by Lauren ReedyLearn more about the leadership resources at Armstrong McGuire

The conversation extends to Medicaid fraud, such as payments to deceased individuals, and calls for stronger accountability, prosecutions, and congressional reforms. White expresses optimism for bipartisan change driven by taxpayer frustration, independent journalism, and potential political reckonings in upcoming elections.

Through storytelling, service, and conscious innovation, Shenali is raising the vibration of communities worldwide and redefining what it means to lead with love, purpose, and responsible influence. Shenali shares the personal roots that shaped her worldview—from her grandmother's legacy of peacebuilding to her upbringing centered on possibility and unity—and how these experiences led her to build two global platforms devoted to empowerment, well-being, and connection. She reveals the Four R's Framework—Reflection, Recognition, Respect, and Resolution—that guides her leadership and teaches individuals how to rediscover their inner power. Shenali also shares an unforgettable story from Uganda's Power of Girls Clubs, where confidence-building and creativity helped young women step into futures they never imagined possible. Together, Gregg and Shenali explore: • How women can reshape global narratives by recognizing the inherent power they already possess • What responsible influence looks like when building a movement rooted in peace, collaboration, and compassion • How music, culture, and storytelling foster unity and healing across borders • Why discovering your purpose begins with turning inward—not outward • The extraordinary ripple effect of simple acts like kindness, acknowledgment, and showing up Shenali's message is a heartfelt reminder that every person carries a unique gift, and even the smallest gesture can spark transformation. Today is Saturday, November 8th and Happy Birthday to Margaret Mitchell I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Lawrenceville's Hooper-Renwick Themed Library earns Redevelopment Project of the Year honors Rick Case Bikes for Kids Accepting Bicycle Donations Gwinnett Tech boards earn statewide honors for exemplary leadership and governance All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia STORY 1: Lawrenceville's Hooper-Renwick Themed Library earns Redevelopment Project of the Year honors The Hooper-Renwick Themed Library in Lawrenceville just snagged the title of Medium Redevelopment Project of the Year at the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit—and honestly, it’s well-deserved. This isn’t just a library. It’s a reimagining of the historic Hooper-Renwick School, once the only public school for Black students in Gwinnett County. Now, it’s a space that blends the past and present—a library, a museum, a place for storytelling and connection. The project preserves the school’s legacy while creating a vibrant community hub. STORY 2: Rick Case Bikes for Kids Accepting Bicycle Donations Got an old bike collecting dust? Rick Case Bikes for Kids is back, and they’re asking the community to help spread some holiday magic. Through Dec. 20, Rick Case dealerships are accepting gently used bicycles to give to kids who might not otherwise have one. For 44 years, this program has delivered over 122,000 bikes to children through groups like Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, and local schools. “A first bike is unforgettable,” says Rita Case, CEO of Rick Case Automotive Group. “For many of these kids, it’s their first taste of freedom.” Drop-offs are easy—locations in Duluth and Roswell are open daily. STORY 3: Gwinnett Tech boards earn statewide honors for exemplary leadership and governance Gwinnett Technical College is having a moment—two big milestones worth celebrating. First, the Gwinnett Tech Foundation Board of Trustees was named a 2025 Role Model Board, a pretty big deal in the world of technical education. Why? Because it’s only given to boards that go above and beyond in leadership, advocacy, and making a real difference. And then there’s this: for the 16th year in a row, every single member of the Gwinnett Tech Board of Directors earned certification. Sixteen years! That’s dedication. “These achievements show just how committed our boards are to student success and workforce development,” said Dr. Glen Cannon, Gwinnett Tech’s president. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Stolen trailer leads Gwinnett police to cache of guns and drugs in Doraville home What started as a stolen trailer report in Norcross turned into something much bigger—a stash of guns and drugs uncovered in Doraville, according to Gwinnett County police. It began on Oct. 30, when officers used Flock license plate readers to track the stolen trailer to a vehicle tied to Matthew Davis. A visit to Davis’s home revealed the trailer, now sporting a swapped license plate. But that wasn’t all. A search warrant led officers to more than 30 firearms, fentanyl, meth, and prescription drugs inside the house. No charges yet, but detectives are asking for tips. STORY 5: Mall of Georgia preparing for the holidays and visits with Santa Santa’s back at the Mall of Georgia, and he’s ready for his close-up! You can catch him at the Simon Photo Experience all the way through Christmas Eve. Pro tip: hours vary, so snag a reservation if you can. But Santa’s not just sticking to photos—he’s making the rounds. On Nov. 15, he’ll join the Grinch and Papa Elf for the Tree Lighting Ceremony (7 p.m.), complete with live reindeer, face painting, and *The Polar Express*. Got a furry friend? Pet photos with Santa are happening Nov. 23, 6:30–8:30 p.m. And for families with special needs, there’s a quieter event Dec. 7, 8:30–10 a.m. STORY 6: FIRST LOOK: COhatch Lawrenceville set to open Monday COhatch is bringing its coworking magic to Lawrenceville, opening Monday, Nov. 10, at 190 S. Clayton St. This isn’t your typical office—it’s 30 private offices, four meeting rooms, event space, and even a patio for when you need a little fresh air (or just an excuse to work outside). The vibe? Community-focused. Think high-speed internet, shared kitchens, and spaces designed to connect people from all walks of life. “We want to create inspiring spaces right in the heart of neighborhoods,” says COhatch CEO Matt Davis. STORY 7: Gwinnett Stripers Launch 'Hooked on Books' Reading Program The Gwinnett Stripers are stepping up to the plate with *Hooked on Books*—their first-ever free reading program for elementary students in Gwinnett County. Here’s the deal: read four books, “round the bases,” and score two free tickets to a 2026 Stripers game. Teachers and staff? You’re in on the free tickets, too. Schools can join in two ways: - **Campus Assembly:** Chopper the Groundhog and friends bring the hype with a 30-minute pep rally (if you’re within 15 miles of Coolray Field). - **Virtual Option:** A fun video and all the details sent straight to you. The program runs Jan. 12–March 16, with an April 1 deadline. Details at GoStripers.com. Community builder and Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston President and CEO Robert Lewis Jr. shares how growing up in East Boston public housing, surviving a firebombing during the busing crisis, and being lifted by mentors shaped his life's mission to unite people and invest in youth as Boston's future talent. We talk assets over deficits, redefining “poor,” belonging, narrative, and how adults can listen, love, and create real opportunity.   Key takeaways Belonging beats scarcity. Community, friendships, and safety redefine what “poor” feels like. Lead with assets. Stop deficit language. See young people as talent and invest accordingly. Turn pain into purpose. Robert's 16-year-old promise fuels a lifetime of bridge-building. Adults must shift. Listen more, partner more, and stop “fixing” kids. Define your narrative. Emmy's Gamification of Charity: A Hit or Miss? In a recent podcast episode, the hosts dissect the unconventional charity initiative at the Emmy Awards, where host Nate Bargatze pledged $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. The twist: the donation amount would decrease based on the length of celebrity speeches, while shorter speeches would add to the fund. Despite the initial $100,000 dropping by $60,000 due to long speeches, Bargatze and CBS ultimately donated $350,000. The hosts debated the merits of this gamified approach to philanthropy. Critics argue it cheapens the serious work of nonprofits and aligns charity with guilt and shame. Conversely, supporters highlight the significant funds raised and the increased visibility for the Boys and Girls Clubs, as evidenced by a spike in Google searches. They argue that such creative fundraising efforts engage the public and inject fun into philanthropy.
