Synopsis: Host Jan Lee takes a look at how the saga unfolded in a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, titled Can I Tell You Something Crazy. Actor and pop star Edison Chen was at one time one of the hottest, most promising young celebrities in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. But a shocking sex scandal forced him out of the city's film industry. In 2008, hundreds of sexually explicit photos of Chen with female celebrities such as idol singer Gillian Chung and actress Cecilia Cheung leaked on the Internet, sparking a scandal that made headline news and dominated the pages of tabloids for weeks and months. It was later discovered that these private photos were stolen from Chen's laptop when he dropped it off for repair. Chen, as well as the various women seen in the photos, were viciously shamed by the public and hounded by the media.  Now, exactly 15 years after the first photos leaked on Jan 27, 2008, host Jan Lee takes a look at how the saga unfolded in the first of a two-parter about the Edison Chen sex-photogate.  Over the two episodes, Jan looks at how the media covered the story, how the case was handled by the police and the brutal victim-shaming and trauma the celebrities suffered. She also examines why the story is such an encapsulation of a unique, yet bygone time in history - after the advent of the Internet but before the proliferation of smartphones, social media and online news.  In this first episode, she covers Chen's debut in show business, what happened when the scandal first broke and the reactions of the public, the media as well as the celebrity response in the immediate aftermath of the scandal.  Produced by: Jan Lee (janlee@sph.com.sg) & Penelope Lee Edited by: Penelope Lee, Teo Tong Kai & Eden Soh Follow #PopVultures Podcast episodes here every month:  Channel: https://str.sg/JWad Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/JWaA Spotify: https://str.sg/JWaP  Google Podcasts: https://str.sg/Ju47  SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Follow Jan Lee on Instagram: https://str.sg/Jbxc Read Jan Lee's stories: https://str.sg/Jbxp --- Discover ST's special edition podcasts: Singapore's War On Covid: https://str.sg/wuJa The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia: https://str.sg/wuZ2 Stop Scams: https://str.sg/wuZB Invisible Asia: https://str.sg/wuZn --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE Bookmark This!: https://str.sg/JWas Lunch With Sumiko: https://str.sg/J6hQ Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Discover BT Podcasts: https://bt.sg/pcPL Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #PVSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mention about the topic, the best clothes on me is not a formal suit or such, it is just a Tee which has a signature on it. Apparently, the signature is from Edison Chen. He used to be quite famous all over the world you know. A perfect actor and a special idol to me. A couple of years ago, my best friend gave it to me as my 19th birthday gift. The color is my favorite, babe blue, or let us say light blue. No specific design or something, but I just love its brand, color and signature. I thought that it was the best clothes of mine, I wore it only once to twice when I became a real university student. On that special day, I wore it. I thought that it brought good luck to me, on the first day of my college life, certainly I would wear it. Till now, it was still kept in my room, I used to take some photos and uploaded the pictures to my Tik Tok, just for fun, for showing off, you know. So, that is it.

Saturday School Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 21, 2019 26:55

In this week’s Saturday School, we break our sixth season streak of epic, emotional and honorable love stories, and as we hit the turn of the century, we look at “Asian films about Asian Americans” from an entirely different, warped mirror. We’re talking about 1999’s “Gen X Cops” and 2000’s “Gen Y Cops,” which is like a who’s who of Asian American/Canadian/Australian actors who briefly ruled the Hong Kong film industry, when the powers-that-be there were thirsting for new talent and caught some ABC fever. You got Daniel Wu, Maggie Q, Nicholas Tse, Stephen Fung, Edison Chen, Jaymee Ong, Terrence Yin -- and post-“Clueless,” pre-“Anchorman” Paul Rudd (“the dark days of Paul Rudd”) with bleached blond hair playing an FBI agent that says things like “You're the one going to the bamboo Alcatraz!” But back to the ABCs: Their Cantonese isn’t great. Their English-language acting is only debatably better. But they’re hot, they don’t give a fuck, and that’s kind of exactly what Hong Kong needed for this new type of hero leading high-octane action flicks with explosions, evil foreign adversaries (like Paul Rudd), nonsensical plot twists AND ROBOTS. History showed that this archetype of an Asian American too-cool-for-school sexually-liberated renegade, a la Edison Chen, wasn’t going to represent the future of the Hong Kong film industry. And probably for good reason, because Asian Americans from the other side of the ocean might have found it all a little bit embarrassing. But looking back, for a brief moment, Asian Americans were ruling the box office in Hong Kong. How did they pull it off? Did they totally improvise their own English lines because nobody behind the camera could tell them otherwise? Probably. And it was kind of glorious.

Late last year we went to Shanghai, China to experience Innersect, a two-day celebration of all things sneaker, streetwear, and fashion founded by Edison Chen of CLOT. While there, we co-hosted a panel with Bodega and Reebok, who revealed several Innersect-exclusive collaborations. It was there we met Wes Chen, a hip-hop head and host of  “Xi Ha Gong Yuan”—aka The Park—arguably China’s most mainstream hip-hop show where he interviews artists, plays tracks, and talks about the latest happenings in the scene. Chen was instrumental to the rise of artists like the Chengu-based Higher Brothers, and is also the host of a documentary series documenting the rise of China’s trap scene. We stopped by his Shanghai studio to get a brief look at how hip-hop spread in China, the difficulties American artists may face while touring the country, and in contrast—the difficulties faced by Asian artists when it comes to breaking into the American music industry. Late last year we went to Shanghai, China to experience Innersect, a two-day celebration of all things sneaker, streetwear, and fashion founded by Edison Chen of CLOT. It brought out many of the city's best-dressed denizens, but it also gave us a closer look at the Chinese streetwear consumer, and what separates them from their counterparts in America and Europe. Of course, street culture is now a global culture—and there's a lot of crossover in what brands are popular. The convention saw limited releases from Jordan Brand, UNDERCOVER, NEIGHBORHOOD, and PLEASURES, but also really dope installations that told a great story. Take for example, what Boston-based Bodega built out to promote their Innersect-exclusive collaborations. But even though some of the same brands are popular the world over, there's still a very regional aspect to how they're worn and what pieces pop off in different countries. On this episode of Highsnobiety's Conversations podcast, we take a deeper dive into what makes the Chinese streetwear market something plenty of brands and retailers are paying attention to today. Bodega's Oliver Mak and Alex James of PLEASURES talk about how a lot of their consumers come from China, and what it is about the country's massive population and culture of consumption that have made it an influential force in street culture. In this weeks episode, James and Lawrence discuss James' fate as the future of the pod hangs on by a thread. Will James quit his job at [bleep] and move to Los Angeles or will he stay here with the boys and take the L? Find out.... next week we think, we're not exactly sure. Then the guys interview amazingly talented photographer, Andi Elloway. They talk about the differences between living in New York vs. LA, working with Edison Chen and the team over at Honeyee, the best way to take fit pics, and much more. Actually come to think of it, that's pretty much all they talk about. Huh.... guess we summed up the episode pretty well. Still listen though because in Captain's Log/Letters To Home we reveal OUR NEWEST RECRUIT: KYLE DUNKSUPERCALIFRAGILISTICESPIALADOCIOUS. In Part 1: We air a dispatch from National Radio Project's Making Contact, "Still Talking About Sex," which features former U.S. Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders. In 1993, Elders became the first African American Surgeon General of the United States. Criticized and attacked for her public statements promoting comprehensive sex education, the distribution of condoms in public schools, and the possibility of the legalization of drugs, Elders was forced to resign about a year later. The statement Elders is often remembered for is when she said masturbation is a part of human sexuality, and so perhaps it should be taught to children. On this edition, of Making Contact, we'll hear from the former surgeon who to this day remains a fierce advocate for health related policies. In Part 2: We delve into the Edison Chen sex scandal that has gripped Hong Kong and the surrounding region for a month. The hip hop singer and actor has now admitted taking most of the hundreds of photographs circulating on the Internet showing him in bed (separately) with up to a half dozen local starlets. We discuss the legal and civil rights implications in the current law enforcement crackdown in the wake of the theft of his images. Show host is Daniel C. Tsang.
