We have a rare Wednesday release of the Pathfinder podcast, but we promise the wait was worth it. Joining us today is Kelly Larson, who's the CEO of Aquarian Space. The Boulder, Colorado startup is building “internet for the solar system.” Or, to get a bit more technical, Aquarian is developing a communications network for interplanetary exploration. Come for the above topics, stay for ever-so-brief discussions of yoga and astrology (Ryan's totally unbiased opinion: Aquarians rule). My guest today is Matthew Gould, Founder and CEO of Unstoppable Domains. Unstoppable Domains is onboarding the world onto the decentralized web by building blockchain-based domain names. Unstoppable Domains allows users to create their own fully decentralized and uncensorable websites that they truly own. They also make it possible to replace cryptocurrency addresses with real, human names -- making it easier to send crypto and interact with the decentralized web. By selling these domains directly to consumers for a one-time fee, they are making a product that will change cryptocurrency and shape the future of a free Internet. Unstoppable Domains recently raised a Series A led by Draper Associates and Boost VC, and have received grants from the Ethereum Foundation and Zilliqa Foundation. Matthew's mission is to help users around the world join the decentralized web. Matthew's background is over a decade in product and analytics leadership. His passion is entrepreneurship and working with incredible teams to deliver truly meaningful results. In our conversation we discuss a variety of topics including Unstoppable Domains, Digital Identity, Democratizing access to Web3, Disrupting Web2, Internet Communities, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing Unstoppable Domains. Matthew does an excellent job at explaining how domains are evolving and the implications of having a NFT domain. We discuss how replacing crypto addresses will help democratize access and broaden crypto adoption. Our conversation transitions slightly and we discuss why digital identities will be one of the most disruptive innovations of crypto. Matthew details how he envisions digital identities impacting broader society by giving a variety of use cases. Our next major discussion topic centers around how the adoption of Web3 will be spearheaded by the adoption of decentralized domains. We discuss how digital identities will solve a lot of the issues and shortcoming currently plaguing Web3. We also touch on which Web2 business models are at risk with growing adoption of Web3. Our final discussion topic centered around how the growth of digital assets and the advent of digital ownership is going to continue to disrupt every aspect of our lives and enable broader societal inclusion. Please enjoy my conversation with Matthew Gould. -- This podcast is powered by Blockworks. What happens when you cross a cat rescuing microbiologist with another cat rescuing MBA student? You get a passionate and purposeful team who has set out remove animals from factory farming and the pet food supply chain by creating cultivated mouse meat! BOOM, we have Because Animals! That is what we call SHOT CALLERS! Shannon Falconer and co-founder Josh Errett bonded at a Toronto cat rescue organization and realized they had the skills and passion to help take animals out of the pet food industry supply chain. Shannon, having completed her post-doctoral fellow in microbiology and immunology at Stanford, realized she had the scientific knowledge to create cultivated meat for the pet food industry. It would be the first step in removing animals from our pet food supply chain. Because Animals has already launched their first non-cell based pet products; probiotics and treats for cats and dogs. In 2021, they also successfully raised over $3 million in venture capital from big name firms Draper Associates, Orkla, SOSVC and many more. Their first limited edition cultivated "Mouse Meat Cat Cookie" is set to launch in 2022. In early 2022 they will launch their A round of venture capital fundraising to expand their test facility for larger production capability. From a health perspective, it makes a ton of sense to give cats a "native" diet, instead of the left-overs from an awful chemical process from animals they would NEVER normally eat in the wild. So many of you listening to this podcast will have a precious pet at home. You will want the very best for your fur baby. But how many of you know the origin of the pet food you are feeding Snoopy and Garfield? The answer is that most of us, including me, are oblivious. Not only does Shannon Falconer explain to us what "fallen animals" are in the entire food supply chain, but also how awful the condition of meat is in these "rendering" facilities. Shannon enlightens us some of the challenges behind "feeding" the cells they are growing. The common ingredient used is called "fetal bovine serum." This was obviously NOT a solution for them. These protein "media" are also very expensive. This was one of the first hurdles they needed to overcome. As a chemical biologist, she relied on her training to find a better, more ethical solution. They have made great progress, but it is a process that will continuously be refined and improved. As a business, Because Animals intends to be very price competitive with the premium and ultra-premium segment of the pet food industry. She tells us, by the way, that these two segments are the only current "growth" markets in the pet food industry. This is a comforting statistic as consumers, ie. pet parents, are becoming more discerning about what they feed their dogs and cats. DESCRIPTION Today, Rob is joined by American venture capital investor Tim Draper, whose most prominent investments include Hotmail, Skype, Tesla and Twitter. Learn today what investors look for in an entrepreneur and what it truly means to be one, as well as why it is important to visualise the future success of companies when investing in them rather than looking at what could go wrong. KEY TAKEAWAYS As an early-stage venture investor, you need to put your money into a variety of different companies because it is only a small number of businesses that makes it big and so you have to have at least 20 or 30 investments in any given fund. If a company is doing something entirely new and different there is not much research you can do so you have to just project out ‘what is the world going to look like in 5, 10, 15 years from now if these people are successful?' That is the question you should ask yourself when considering to invest in a company rather than what could go wrong. A true entrepreneur is someone who dedicates their life to something whether they get an investment or not, they have just decided to go ahead and do it, it is a train leaving the station and if investors want to get on the train, then they can. Once they create enough success they are able to look at their product and see the impact it has had on the world. Keep making money and don't spend it. Stay frugal and feel good about money because when you've earned it that means you have made a deal with somebody that worked out very well for the two of you and whenever you make a deal with somebody the ambition is that you are both going to be better off. Continue to make deals which will help you grow your wealth. It doesn't matter who is buying or selling, it is just the human connection that matters. Have that connection and the ability to do a deal with somebody or do something for somebody that will make their life better, you should always be proud to buy and sell and to help others as well as accepting help when you need it. When you are ‘poor' or ‘unsuccessful' you think about money and success more because it is not something you think you have. Work hard to make yourself a good amount of money and make money something you no longer have to think about too much so that you can then go out and do meaningful work. BEST MOMENTS “I have always loved entrepreneurs, I love what they do for the world, I love the progress they bring us in jobs, wealth and happier people. They explore the world in new ways. Entrepreneurs are great for our world and we need to support them in any way that we can” “I am always looking at the entrepreneur that way, I am thinking ‘are you going to be the one that makes a huge impact on the world.” “You want to make your customers into your sales force” “When it is really great, you will start losing people.” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—You Can Be Tougher” podcast & YouTube Video this week features Tim Draper, legendary Silicon Valley venture capitalist and founder of Draper Associates, DFJ, and the Draper Venture Network—a global network of venture capital funds. Often regarded as one of the most successful venture capitalists in the world, Tim is a major proponent of Bitcoin and decentralization. Tim Draper, forward-thinking and renowned venture capitalist, is a graduate of both Stanford University (BS in Electrical Engineering) and Harvard University (MBA) and holds two honorary doctorates from The International University and Trinity College of Dublin. In 1985, Tim founded Draper Associates—a seed stage venture capital firm that helps revolutionary entrepreneurs impact the world by propelling their businesses to greatness and directing their visions through funding, education, media and government reform. Some of his most prominent investments include Skype, Twitter, Baidu, Hotmail, Tesla, SpaceX, DocuSign, Coinbase, Robinhood, Ancestry.com, Twitch.tv, AngelList, SolarCity, Ring, Cruise Automation, YeePay and Focus Media. A leading spokesperson for Bitcoin, Blockchain, ICOs, and cryptocurrencies—and one of the earliest investors in the internet—Tim expects that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies will be the primary means of payment in five years. Tim won the US Marshall’s auction in 2014 (where he bid on 30,000 Bitcoins) and has invested in over 50 crypto companies as well as leads investments in Coinbase, Ledger, Tezos, and Bancor, among others. In 1996, he invented “viral marketing”—a marketing method for exponentially spreading an electronic service from customer to customer. This was instrumental to the successes of Hotmail, Skype, and other online applications. In his notable mission to promote entrepreneurship, Tim created Draper University of Heroes, a residential and online school based in San Mateo, California, to help extraordinary people accomplish their life missions. School alumni have gone on to build 350 companies including crypto leaders, QTUM, Spacecash, DataWallet, and Credo. He also started Innovate Your State, a non-profit dedicated to crowdsource innovation in government; and BizWorld, a non-profit that teaches young children to navigate the world of business and entrepreneurship. Regularly featured on major networks, in publications, and in social media as a proponent for entrepreneurship, innovative governance, free markets, and Bitcoin, Tim has received numerous awards and honors including the World Entrepreneurship Forum’s “Entrepreneur of the World.” He has also been highly ranked on several notable lists including one of the top 100 most powerful people in finance by Worth Magazine; the top 20 most influential people in Crypto by Crypto Weekly; #1 most networked venture capitalist by AlwaysOn; #7 on the Forbes Midas List; and #48 most influential Harvard Alum. Investments include Skype, Hotmail, Tesla, Baidu, and others. With Draper Associates, investments include Twitch.TV, YeePay, Indiegogo, Docusign, and AngelList. Some Questions Kreig Asks Tim: - What do you look for in a founder? (7:26) - What do you think of the new way of starting companies? Fifty years ago, there was not a venture capital industry, and there were not a lot of people who would give you money and risk that money on a startup, and people just bootstrapped their businesses. Do you think the mentality of starting a business has changed and entrepreneurs think differently now? (14:18) - Has there been a time when you've backed an entrepreneur who you've felt did not have the right business model or hadn't figured out all the aspects of their business, but you truly believed in the entrepreneur? (16:48) - What are some failures that you've had in your journey as a venture capitalist? (19:13) - What is some advice that you can give to the Gritty Founders listening to this episode? (25:21) - What would you tell entrepreneurs who are working on a business right now who think they need an investor to give them some money? (27:14) In This Episode, You Will Learn: - About Tim's background, how he got into venture capital and started Draper Associates (2:38) - Why Tim looks for businesses in industries that charge too much for too little (7:51) - Signals Tim looks for in founders (9:54) - Why Tim says entrepreneurs should never personally guarantee anything (12:06) - About the risks of borrowing money (12:40) - Why looking at venture capitalists as your customer is a huge mistake (15:15) - Why Tim invested in Hotmail (17:04) - A few companies Tim should have invested but didn't (21:01) - The story of why Tim didn't invest in Airbnb (23:20) - The importance of feeling like you have a mission when building a company (25:39) Connect with Tim Draper: Twitter Personal Website DFJ Venture Capital Also Mentioned on This Show... Sam Sethi talked with Sam Liang about his entrepreneurial journey, from his beginnings as a computer student at Peking University through to a software engineer at Google where he was responsible for developing the blue dot on Google Maps.Sam sold his first startup, a location platform called Alohar Mobile to Alibaba, before finally starting Otter, the 30-person startup team that hails from Google, Facebook, Nuance, Yahoo, as well as Stanford, Duke, MIT and Cambridge.Otter was founded, just over three years ago and has raised $13 million in funding from the who’s who of Silicon Valley. e.g Horizons Ventures – a backer of Viv, DeepMind, Siri, Slack and others – who led the $10 million Series A. Also participating were Bridgewater Associates, i-Hatch Ventures, MetaLab, Jay Markley, and Boston investors Jim Pallotta and Stu Porter.Seed investors included Tim Draper through Draper Associates and Draper Dragon; Dave Morin through Slow Ventures; David Cheriton "The billionaire Professor and 1st investor in Google"; SV Tech Ventures, Danhua Capital, and 500 Startups.Otter wants to make it as easy to search your voice conversations as it is to search your email and texts. The idea to create a new voice assistant focused on transcribing everyday conversations – like meetings and interviews.Essentially, a voice recorder that offers automatic transcription, Otter is designed to be able to understand and capture long-form conversations that take place between multiple people. This is a different sort of voice technology than what’s been developed today for voice assistance – as with Alexa or Google Assistant. The existing technologies are not good enough for human-to-human conversations,” explains Sam Liang.“Google’s voice API has been trained to optimize voice search,” he says, adding that when people talk to voice assistants, it’s typically only one person talking and they tend to speak more slowly and clearly than usual. They also often ask shorter questions, like “what’s the weather?,” not carry on long conversations.“Human meetings are much more complicated, it usually involves at least two people, and the people could talk for an hour. It’s a long-form conversation.”With Otter, the goal is to capture those conversations – meetings, interviews, lectures, etc. – and turn them into a searchable archive where everything said is immediately transcribed by Otter's software. The entire technology stack, including speech recognition, was built in-house. The company is not using existing speech recognition APIs, because they wanted to improve the accuracy, and optimize for multiple speakers, says Liang. To identify when someone else starts talking, Otter uses a technology called diarization to separate each individual speaker; it then generates a voice print for each person’s voice.Broadly speaking, this is like the voice equivalent to facial recognition, with the voice print being used to identify the speaker going forward.Sam envisions a number of potential use cases for Otter's technology, including in enterprise, health care, education, phone calls and more.

Mark Cummins is the co-founder of Pointy, a startup that helps local retailers get their products online. Pointy has the ability to create the largest system of distribution warehouses in the world too as a result.
