The property market is in focus today as we speak to a leading real estate technology company that operates real estate portals across South East Asia. Launched in 2014 as 99.co, our guest 99 Group was conceived during the 2008 US mortgage subprime crisis, an event which the firm believed was “born out of desire and misinformation”. The founding team at 99 Group hence made it a point to make the company into a simple and trusted platform to un-complicated the property journey. This can be seen in the firm’s positioning strategy, where it aims to differentiate itself from other property search websites through its user-friendly designs, with features including price analysis data, finance planners, smart filters, as well as the ability to search by map or commute time. Fast forward to today, 99 Group is said to be one of the fastest growing property portal firms in the region, with a presence in both Singapore and Indonesia. The group is said to specialise in digital property advertising and has a portfolio of three brands: namely its flagship 99.co property portal and SRX.com.sg right here in Singapore, as well as 99.co/id and Rumah 123 in Indonesia. So far, 99 Group said it has achieved what it described as solid growth, with revenues of US$17 million recorded for 2023, a CAGR of 47% since 2019. But what are the key trends the firm is capitalising on to take it forward and which are the markets with the biggest potential in the region? And what are the challenges for proptech firms even as Southeast Asia rises as a hotbed for property technology or proptech innovation? Meanwhile, the ongoing narrative about interest rates in the region continues to weigh on home buyers’ and investors' minds. So how far has this influenced the types of listings that appear on 99 Group’s platforms and how is the firm attracting and showing the right listings to its consumers to increase retention and action? On Under the Radar, Money Matters’ finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Darius Mahtani Cheung, Founder and CEO, 99 Group.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's been quite a journey for Han, and in this interview, we talk about everything from history to "slow death metal" with half-Cantonese lyrics. Enjoy! PS: Sorry for the delay in release. An open access Asia Shorts edited volume from AAS. The spring of 2020 will remain etched in collective memory as a moment of profound upheaval. The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools and universities around the world to close their doors, reshaping education overnight. Teachers scrambled to reimagine their classrooms in online spaces, while students adjusted to a new, distanced reality. For educators of Asia-related topics, these shifts carried unique challenges. Already marginalized within English-speaking curricula, Asia's place in classrooms faced further reductions amidst the chaos of pandemic adaptation. Recognizing this, our Asia Shorts volume, Teaching about Asia in a Time of Pandemic (AAS, 2025), was conceived as a timely response, offering guidance and inspiration during those uncertain times. Almost five years later, the world has moved forward, but the ripple effects of that historic spring are still felt. This supplemental set of open-access essays, edited by Kin Cheung (Associate Professor of East and South Asian Religions at Moravian University) builds upon the foundation of the original volume, reflecting on the enduring impacts of the pandemic on education, equity, and how we teach about Asia. One lasting consequence of the pandemic has been the rise in anti-Asian racism. Harassment and violence against Asians, fueled by pandemic-related scapegoating and xenophobic rhetoric, surged globally. In the United States, inflammatory phrases such as “China virus” and “kung flu” further stigmatized Asian communities, exacerbating a wave of hostility. Educators now face the challenge of addressing these injustices while fostering inclusive, empathetic learning environments. The essays in this collection delve into the pedagogical responses to anti-Asian racism, advocating for teaching frameworks that prioritize social justice and counteract harmful stereotypes and complement the important work of the scholars whose work appears in our recent Asia Shorts volume, Global Anti-Asian Racism, edited by Jennifer Ho. Another critical dimension explored in this volume is the necessity of representation. Asian Americans remain underrepresented in both the teaching workforce and teacher education programs, leading to a curriculum that often overlooks the rich cultural and linguistic assets of Asian students and their families. This gap underscores the importance of preparing teachers to adopt culturally responsive practices, ensuring that all students—especially Asian American learners—feel seen and valued in the classroom. These essays also challenge educators to move beyond surface-level engagement with Asia. A case in point is the life and legacy of Grace Lee Boggs, an Asian American activist whose story offers rich insights into the intersections of race, gender, and political activism. By teaching figures like Boggs through an antiracist, transnational lens, students can develop a deeper, more empathetic understanding of complex historical narratives. This approach not only enriches their knowledge of Asia and its diasporas but also equips them with critical tools to navigate and challenge systemic inequities in their own societies. The point of our discussion revolves around the evolution of Fanlist, previously known as Pod Inbox, and the strategic decisions that informed its transformation into a comprehensive platform for creators. In our dialogue, I had the distinct pleasure of engaging with Pat Cheung, the founder and CEO of Fanlist, who shared his journey from a successful venture-backed enterprise to a bootstrap model that emphasizes community and creator engagement. We explored the rationale behind the recent rebranding and the shift from a subscription-based model to a commission-based structure, which reflects a commitment to supporting podcasters and other creators in their monetization efforts. Throughout our conversation, we delved into the nuances of bootstrapping, the importance of community-centric approaches, and the necessity of adapting to the evolving landscape of content creation. As we navigate these insights, we aim to illuminate the path for aspiring entrepreneurs seeking to establish their ventures with efficiency and purpose. The discourse encapsulated within this podcast episode presents a rich narrative centered around the entrepreneurial venture of Pat Cheung, the founder and CEO of Fanlist, formerly known as Pod Inbox. This evolution signifies a pivotal moment in Cheung's journey, as he shares the motivations and inspirations that guided him towards establishing a platform dedicated to enhancing audience engagement for podcasters and creators. The conversation begins with a retrospective examination of Cheung's entrepreneurial background, transitioning from a venture-backed healthcare enterprise to the burgeoning landscape of podcasting, where he identifies a key pain point: the need for meaningful interaction between creators and their audiences. Cheung's innovative response to this challenge is the development of a web-based audio messaging platform, which serves to improve the quality of audience engagement, thereby allowing creators to cultivate a more robust relationship with their fans.A theme throughout the episode is the transformation of Fanlist's business model, shifting from a subscription-based approach to a commission model. Cheung articulates the strategic rationale for this pivot, emphasizing the importance of accessibility for creators who often face financial barriers in their pursuit of success. By eliminating upfront costs traditionally associated with subscription services, Fanlist positions itself as a supportive ally in the creator economy, where the primary objective is to facilitate the growth and sustainability of creators' endeavors. Cheung's insights into the evolving landscape of monetization reveal a thoughtful consideration of the broader implications of business models within the digital content sphere, where community and creator success are paramount. As the conversation progresses, Cheung reflects on his experiences as a bootstrapped entrepreneur, sharing valuable lessons learned along the way. He navigates the complexities of maintaining capital efficiency while pursuing innovative solutions, drawing contrasts between his previous venture capital experiences and the realities of bootstrapping. This dialogue serves as a profound exploration of the intersection of innovation, community, and sustainability within the entrepreneurial landscape, ultimately culminating in Cheung's belief that the success of creators is fundamentally intertwined with the platform's success. The episode not only provides a keen insight into the entrepreneurial spirit that drives Chung but also serves as a testament to the transformative potential of the creator economy in reshaping how we engage with content and communities.Takeaways: The evolution of Pod Inbox to Fanlist illustrates the importance of adaptability in business. In the first half, guest host Rich Berra (email) welcomed modern mystic and best-selling author Theresa Cheung, who shared her insights on the significance of dreams. Cheung revealed her fascination with dreams originated in childhood within a family of psychics, admitting that she's "always been a vivid dreamer."When discussing the structure and purpose of dreams, Cheung explained, "They are mostly symbolic... your unconscious intuition has noticed things during the day that matter for your growth." She urged listeners not to dismiss dreams as meaningless or irrelevant but to reflect on them as valuable messages from the self. "They are a little bit like an inbuilt therapist," she explained. "If you have a recurring dream, it's like tough love... Your dreaming mind is trying to get a point across to you."Addressing a common dream for many about a partner's infidelity, Cheung encouraged exploration rather than panic. "Most of the time, you are dreaming about your own mindset... Look at what you're cheating yourself out of," she explained. Cheung urged individuals to view dreams through a creative lens: "Think of it as a poem that needs to be interpreted personally... Dreams do not lie, but they do challenge you."Cheung asserted that dream work should be more integral within the educational system. "Children should be taught to understand their dreams... it could dramatically decrease crime and depression," she claimed. She also encouraged listeners to embrace their own intuitive powers, saying, "You are a mystery... and that needs to be explored and discovered."As Cheung says, "Dreams are telling you all those things for you to discover for yourself."---------------------In the second half, David Samuels, the editor of County Highway, explored the rise of conspiracy theories in contemporary society and their detrimental effect on public trust. He pointed to the rumors swirling around during the COVID-19 pandemic as a prime example, remarking, "COVID did more to destroy public trust in institutions than any other single event of my lifetime."Samuels highlighted the stark decline in society's trust in the media, mentioning it has plummeted from over 50% to a mere 22%. He also insisted on having a critical mindset in today's information-saturated world, stating, "You got to kind of question everything in this day and age."The conversation touched on the origin of the term "conspiracy theory." Samuels explained that its roots are found in the Warren Commission report following President Kennedy's assassination. According to him, "This country is founded on a conspiracy theory," noting that the American revolution was sparked by the perceived tyranny of King George III.Samuels also elaborated on the human tendency to connect patterns, saying that "our brains are pattern finding machines." He claimed this innate desire to make connections can lead to both meaningful understanding and the spread of unfounded beliefs. Samuels pointed out that with the advent of the digital revolution, the accessibility for anyone to share their thoughts creates a fertile ground for conspiracy theories to flourish. "I wonder if I just told you I was going to start a conspiracy theory, how quickly would it catch fire over the internet?" he pondered.

She urged listeners not to dismiss dreams as meaningless or irrelevant but to reflect on them as valuable messages from the self.

THIS WEEK: Home Sweet Home (2005), Dog Bite Dog (2006), and Motorway (2012)A generous patron's request brings us back to Hong Kong to look at a more contemporary side of the HK action-industrial complex via the films of Soi Cheung. Unfortunately, Jack has returned from his sabbatical, and decided he'd rather spend the week mired in the soapy melodrama of Cheung's early career. We vow to rectify this injustice very soon.Donate to Palestinian Medical Aid Support Optimism Vaccine on Patreon
