The Wiz RECOMMENDS Farewell My Concubine From a pure visual perspective, few historical epics match the visual sumptuousness of Farewell My Concubine, Chen Kaige's Palme d'Or winning film. It's astonishing on two fronts: the lived in, authentic feel of China during the periods of time the film is portraying and the gorgeous, colorful visuals of the characters performing their plays. Everything set outside of the Peking opera gives the film an incredibly distinct feel that surrounds the characters in a rich history that gives the film a distinct weight when watching. As for the plays, the colorful make-up and costumes, along with the sets and playhouses they are performed at, give a grand feel to these scenes. But the film is also buoyed by Leslie Cheung's excellent performance as Daiyi, a man who has fallen in love with his acting partner who will never reciprocate his love. Cheung plays Daiyi beautifully and tragic, wearing the years of abuse and hard training on his face. He adds a depth of character that doesn't need to be said as he inhabits the role so deeply that he embodies Daiyi in all his complex forms. But honestly, the love triangle between Daiyi, his acting partner Xiaolou (played by Fengyi Chang) and his partner's wife Juxian, played by Gong Li is the weakest part of the film. Neither Juxian or Xiaolou are as captivating as Daiyi and as a result the film starts to drag when the movie concentrates solely on their drama and squabbles. In fact, all the drama is utterly reliant on Cheung to carry it through his force of will performance. Though Wiz did enjoy the film overall, he also felt that having some background info on the history of China at this time might have helped gleamed more from the film and it's themes. The film without that information is still good, but he will likely seek out more information about that time period when he makes a second viewing attempt.

Samantha reviews her favourite biblical western lovestory Redeeming Love, while Indy gets back into the world of Wong KarWai with a review of Days of Being Wild, and we get ready for In The Mood For Love and 2046.     I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa   Redeeming Love is a 2022 American Christian Western romance film directed by D.J. Caruso, who co-wrote the screenplay with Francine Rivers. The film is based on Rivers' 1991 novel of the same name, which was based on the Biblical story of Hosea, and is set in the American Old West during the California Gold Rush. It stars Abigail Cowen, Tom Lewis and Logan Marshall-Green.   Days of Being Wild is a 1990 Hong Kong drama film written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Starring some of the best-known actors and actresses in Hong Kong, including Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, Jacky Cheung and Tony Leung, the film marks the first collaboration between Wong and cinematographer Christopher Doyle, with whom he has since made six more films.   In the Mood for Love (Chinese: 花樣年華; lit. 'Flowery Years') is a 2000 romantic drama film written, produced and directed by Wong Kar-wai. A co-production between Hong Kong and France, it portrays a man (Tony Leung) and a woman (Maggie Cheung) in 1962 whose spouses have an affair together and who slowly develop feelings for each other. It forms the second part of an informal trilogy, alongside Days of Being Wild[6] and 2046.   2046 is a 2004 romantic drama film written, produced and directed by Wong Kar-wai. An international co-production between Hong Kong, France, Italy, China and Germany, it is a loose sequel to Wong's films Days of Being Wild (1990) and In the Mood for Love (2000). It follows the aftermath of Chow Mo-wan's unconsummated affair with Su Li-zhen in 1960s Hong Kong and includes elements of science fiction.

We are joined by Ernabel Demillo, a frequent guest on K Drama Chat and Department Chair of the Communication and Media Culture Department at Saint Peter's University and host of the Emmy-award winning "Asian American Life" show on CUNY-TV. We discuss:The song we feature during the recap: Fallin' by Isaac Hong.Queen of Tears is now the second most popular K Drama of all time on tvN, after Crash Landing on You; both shows are written by Park Ji-eun.tvN has announced two extra episodes at the end of Queen of Tears; what will the episodes be about? Kim Soo-hyun has been nominated for Best Actor in the Baeksang Awards; we feel that Kim Ji-won, Han So-hee, Park Seo-joon, and Kim Tae-ri were snubbed. The Hong family is in a terrible situation. They've been locked out of their house, they don't have cars, their credit cards have been canceled, they've lost control of their company, and they're lost their jobs. The only people who take them in are Hyun-woo and his family. The Hong family is so unaccustomed to hardship and they're miserable in Yongdu-ri.There is such a contrast between the two families in the way they treat each other. There is a huge contrast between the two mothers in the way they treat Hae-in.Both dads are having an identity crisis: they have lost their jobs and purpose.Hyun-woo and Hae-in are driving us crazy because they won't communicate with each other! We think their lack of communication stems from the time Hae-in emptied the nursery and Hyun-woo left the marital bedroom. When this happened, they stopped talking to each other and then their pride wouldn't let them ask the other back into the bedroom.Hyun-woo and Hae-in kept missing opportunities to patch up their relationship, including when Hae-in overheard Hyun-woo talking about wanting to be by her side, when Hyun-woo came home all beat up, and when Hae-in realized the pink MP3 player was hers. There are many in Korea who think the story of Hae-in and Hyun-woo is based on the true story of the granddaughter of the Samsung chaebol who married an ordinary staffer. In 1999, Samsung heiress Lee Boo Jin married Lim Woo Jae.Hyun-woo does a great job of convincing David Yoon that he doesn't know where Hae-in is, even though he did pick them up in a van.The reference to Prince Sado, who was the father of the prince Yi San in Red Sleeve, and who later became King Jeongjo.Instead, Hyun-woo is investigating the land broker, the owner of the data restoration company, the failed investment fund, and the location of the Chairman. Hyun-woo convinced the deceived farmers to sue the land broker, which meant the land broker couldn't leave the country for his honeymoon. Later, the land broker and his thugs try to beat up Hyun-woo, who manages to defend himself ably because he was a champion boxer in his youth. Our crazy predictions for this show:Hyun-woo is going to try and prove that the power of attorney that Moh Sul-hee signed is invalid because it's a forgery, she's not really Moh Sul-hee!Hyun-woo's brother, Baek Hyun-tae, is going to be important because he knows a lot about stocks and previously owned Queen Group stock.Beom-seuk, the Chairman's estranged son, will have some insight into the embezzlement that could save the Chairman, or the person who knows where the secret fund is.Cheon Da-hye, Soo-cheol's wife, will come back and turn on David Yoon.Moh Sul-hee and David Yoon are now at odds with each other because David Yoon didn't want the Hong family banished. David Yoon wants to be with Hae-in.We speculate about why David Yoon is so obsessed with Hae-in.Until the very end, Hyun-woo is in the dark about Hae-in's feelings towards him. He thinks she hates him because he abandoned and deceived her.We feel so sorry for Soo-cheol, who now knows that everything about his wife was fake. She even told him that their son is not his biological son.It looks like Beom-ja will have a romance with the village marriage counselor, who looks like Leslie Cheung. Leslie Cheung is a debonair Hong Kong singer and actor. This prediction came from Laurel, one of our listeners! The theme of regret in this show. Hyun-woo, Hae-in and Beom-ja all express regrets over their actions.Hae-in is so brave when she reveals during the press conference that David Yoon threatened her. In this instance, Hyun-woo finally learns that Hae-in still cares for him.The amazing acting with their eyes by Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won.The K Drama elements we see in this episode, including: all the crying, all the food, all the drinking, the Trip and Catch, the Bulgari Serpenti necklace that Moh Sul-hee wore, and the Subway scene!Ernabel's recent trip to South Korea with a professor from her school who used to be a police chief in South Korea. The shows we're watching now: Ernabel is watching Marry My Husband, Sung Hee is watching Doctor Slump, and Joanna is watching Captivating the King.ReferencesA sneak peak into the life and work of South Korean singer Isaac HongFallin' by Isaac Hong on YouTubeThe Uncanny Similarities “Queen Of Tears” Bears With A Real-life Heiress StoryPodcast episode with Dan Pink on Brene Brown's show about the Power of RegretLeslie Cheung on WikipediaPodcast episode with Brene Brown and Dan Pink on the Power of Regret

April 1, 2023 is the 20th anniversary of the Asian pop icon's death. Synopsis: Can I Tell You Something Crazy is a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, which examines with fresh eyes, events that shook Asian media and entertainment.  On April 1, 2003, the world was shocked by the loss of one of the most beloved, enduring and seductive stars to ever grace screens. Singer and actor Leslie Cheung died by suicide at the age of 46, leaping to his death from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong, after succumbing to a battle with severe depression. 2003 was a dark year for Hong Kong. The Sars epidemic ravaged the city. Yet, Cheung's death ignited a wave of public grieving, with people lining the streets outside his memorial to mourn him. The singer-actor was beloved and known for his androgynous style onstage and his acclaimed performances in films like Days Of Being Wild (1990), Farewell My Concubine (1993) and Happy Together (1997) onscreen. Off screen, his personal life, especially his sexuality, was highly scrutinised.  Host Jan Lee celebrates Cheung's life on the 20th anniversary of his death. She looks at the star's legacy as a queer icon - both in his pop music and his film roles - and how his tragic end highlighted the stigma around mental health and his own sexual orientation. Though she's only in the movie for about 10 minutes, she ends up delivering a terrific dramatic performance.

It has been exactly 15 years since the scandal first broke on Jan 27, 2008. Get a cuppa, sit back and let us transport you back in pop culture history. Synopsis: Host Jan Lee takes a look at how the saga unfolded in a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, titled Can I Tell You Something Crazy. Actor and pop star Edison Chen was at one time one of the hottest, most promising young celebrities in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. But a shocking sex scandal forced him out of the city's film industry. In 2008, hundreds of sexually explicit photos of Chen with female celebrities such as idol singer Gillian Chung and actress Cecilia Cheung leaked on the Internet, sparking a scandal that made headline news and dominated the pages of tabloids for weeks and months. It was later discovered that these private photos were stolen from Chen's laptop when he dropped it off for repair. Chen, as well as the various women seen in the photos, were viciously shamed by the public and hounded by the media.  Now, exactly 15 years after the first photos leaked on Jan 27, 2008, host Jan Lee takes a look at how the saga unfolded in the first of a two-parter about the Edison Chen sex-photogate.  Over the two episodes, Jan looks at how the media covered the story, how the case was handled by the police and the brutal victim-shaming and trauma the celebrities suffered. She also examines why the story is such an encapsulation of a unique, yet bygone time in history - after the advent of the Internet but before the proliferation of smartphones, social media and online news.  In this first episode, she covers Chen's debut in show business, what happened when the scandal first broke and the reactions of the public, the media as well as the celebrity response in the immediate aftermath of the scandal.  Find Part 2 here: https://str.sg/wv4H Find the series' episode on Leslie Cheung here: https://str.sg/iZ9z   Produced by: Jan Lee (janlee@sph.com.sg) & Penelope Lee Edited by: Penelope Lee, Teo Tong Kai & Eden Soh Follow #PopVultures Podcast episodes here every month:  Channel: https://str.sg/JWad Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/JWaA Spotify: https://str.sg/JWaP  Google Podcasts: https://str.sg/Ju47  SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Follow Jan Lee on Instagram: https://str.sg/Jbxc Read Jan Lee's stories: https://str.sg/Jbxp --- Discover ST's special edition podcasts: The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia: https://str.sg/wuZ2 Stop Scams: https://str.sg/wuZB Singapore's War On Covid: https://str.sg/wuJa Invisible Asia: https://str.sg/wuZn --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE Bookmark This!: https://str.sg/JWas Lunch With Sumiko: https://str.sg/J6hQ Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Discover BT Podcasts: https://bt.sg/pcPL Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #PVSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You probably wouldn't expect to see the Cultural Revolution in Chinese films, or the Great Leap Forward, or the Tiananmen Square protests. But for a certain generation and a certain corner of the Chinese film industry, these were actually common themes to deal with. Their films weren't always welcome to the censors, but they weren't always banned, either.  Cindy Yu recently wrote a column for The Spectator on Chinese cinema, and the golden age it experienced just after the end of the Cultural Revolution. You'd be surprised at the amazing political – and social – subversiveness of directors like Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. On this episode, Cindy talks about that golden age and also about what has come after, where, depressingly, it's now films like Wolf Warrior 2 that dominate the box office. Joining her is Chris Berry, Professor of Film Studies at Kings College London who specialises in Chinese cinema. They talk about how their trauma of living through the Cultural Revolution drove the so-called 'Fifth Generation' directors; the bold portrayal of queer characters which got them into trouble with the censors; and how commercialisation has changed the landscape for Chinese directors who are now dictated by the box office. Pictured here is Leslie Cheung in Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, where Cheung portrays a queer Beijing opera singer.

This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, join a conversation with Wong Kar Wai, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and actress Brigitte Lin from the 46th NYFF in 2008, moderated by J. Hoberman. Watch Ashes of Time Redux in our Wong Kar Wai retrospective, available nationwide: filmlinc.org/wong A film whose complicated production took such a toll on Wong that he wrote and shot Chungking Express during its editing process, Ashes of Time Redux is a hallucinatory wuxia like no other. First released in 1994 and then re-edited and re-scored in 2008, Wong’s time-slipping picaresque takes loose inspiration from Jin Yong’s novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes, focusing on a lovesick, embittered mercenary (Leslie Cheung), who acts as an agent for other swordsmen of fortune. Working with regular production designer William Chang, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and a superb ensemble (Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung, and Jacky Cheung), Wong constructs an intricate, enigmatic vision of ancient warriors ensnared by the play of time and memory. An NYFF46 selection.

Today's theme: 장국영 (Leslie Cheung) On April 1st, 2003, beloved Hong Kong actor and singer, Leslie Cheung, 장국영, decided to end his life at a Hotel in Hong Kong. Most people were in disbelief when the news was reported that afternoon. His fans came to him through their love of his music and his performances on the screen, both large and small, but they stayed with him, and even now, over 15 years after his death, they stay with him because of his warmth, simplicity and humbleness of character. In commemoration, we listen to the songs he sung and look into the movies he performed in. The Conversationalist with Writer & Director Robert Joe His film with John Woo (오우삼), A Better Tomorrow (영웅본색), has opened up the era of new genre in Hong Kong cinema called “heroic bloodshed.” Can you tell us more about these movies and how A Better Tomorrow has set the tone for many similar films? Are these common subject of study in the field of theoretical physics, or is he unique? The film is seen as a hallmark of the “heroic bloodshed” subgenre of action films, doing for gunplay what a generation of Hong Kong films had done with swords. The film tells the tale of Ho (Ti Lung), a criminal whose younger brother, Kit (Leslie Cheung), is a police officer. He's betrayed by a fellow gangster (Waise Lee) and sent up the river. When he returns to Hong Kong he wants to stay on the right side of the law which is more difficult than it should be.The film speaks to loyalty, brotherhood, and put Chow Yun-Fat on the map as a bankable action star.Cinema Junkie's Beth Accomando and Mike wax fondly about the glory days of HK Cinema, twin brothers, strange sequels, and the true colors of a hero.

Shaw also tried his hand at producing American films in the late 70s and early 80s, including 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner" and 1979 disaster thriller "Meteor." The influence of Shaw's movies spans vast distances. When talking about his preparation for the action film "Kill Bill", American movie director Quentin Tarantino told the press he had watched one old Shaw Brothers movie a day for a year, if not three. Tarantino also paid tribute to Shaw by beginning the film with the Shaw Brothers scallop and trumpet fanfare. As a shrewd businessman, even in his heyday, Shaw was able to sense the future would be in television. In 1967, Shaw co-founded TVB, which remains Hong Kong's dominant TV station. TVB has now grown into a multi-billion dollar TV empire with channels broadcast in 30 markets including the U.S., Canada and Taiwan. For TV audiences, TVB is the symbol of many classic television series of which only the slightest hint would send people into nostalgic daydreams. At the top of the list of classic shows is of course "the Bund", a love story between gangster boss Hui Man-Keung and Fung Ching-ching, daughter of a wealthy tycoon. And "Looking Back in Anger", a retrospective on business tycoon Ding Yau Kin's life. Another memorable classic was the 1983 martial art TV series "The Legend of the Condor Heroes". With its ever sought-after TV series, TVB has seen a considerable amount of talented individuals rise to stardom internationally. Actor Chow Yun-fat, actress Maggie Cheung, singers Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui and director Wong Kar-wai all started out at TVB. Chow Yun-fat attributes his success to Shaw. "He started TVB with his bare hands all by himself. He trained many talented stars like me. May he rest in peace." Shaw set up the TVB Talent Training Course and the beauty contest Miss Hong Kong Pageant in order to produce future stars for his TV station. One thing he probably would never have imagined is that many of the stars that the two programs cultivated, such as Tony Leung, Lau Kar-ling and Michele Monique Reis, later became the pillars of the Chinese showbiz industry. In 2011, Shaw retired from his position as chairman of TVB at the age of 104 after more than 40 years of service. However, what made Shaw more of an enduring influence is perhaps his philanthropy. He made billions in film and television and gave back nearly as much to society. Since 1985, he donated about 4.75 billion Hong Kong dollars on educational programs across the Chinese mainland. On a map recently provided by one of China's largest search engines, buildings adorned with Shaw's name are visible in clusters across the country. And in Hong Kong, it seems as if half of the public buildings have his name on them. Shaw also established "The Shaw Prize" in 2002, later widely regarded as the "Nobel of the East"; an annual award honoring those who made significant contributions to academic and scientific research or application. And on occasions of disaster relief, he was often among the top donors. Leung Chun-ying, chief executive of Hong Kong spoke out on Shaw's contributions to society. "Shaw has made great philanthropic contributions in Hong Kong, to education in both Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland and to scientific research globally. He is a venerable father figure to us." Run Run Shaw was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. China's Purple Mountain Observatory discovered an asteroid in 1964 and named it 2899 Runrun Shaw in honor of him. Across 107 years, Run Run Shaw became a guiding light that will illuminate generations for years to come.
